Science teaches us that

in order to have fire one must have fuel (something that burns), heat (at or above 451°F), and oxygen. Brought together at a critical intensity they ignite and burn. All three are necessary.

When a fire has burned down and we want to rekindle it, we gather some live embers, add new fuel and blow onto the embers to spark a renewal of flame. The addition of breath or wind enables the flame to multiply in strength.

In the Christian faith, we acknowledge that God has given us everything we need for our new life in Christ to burn brightly.

Because of what Jesus has done, we, joined to Him and He, living in us by the Spirit – are called “the light of the world." Yet it is evident that there are seasons when the flame of faith and the earnestness of our devotion wanes. What was once aglow with the Spirit may now be marked only by a wisp of smoke.

We used to be red hot – but now may only be lukewarm – or stone cold. When so, we need the fresh wind of the Spirit to blow, reigniting our devotion as disciples, our delight in worship, and our zeal in witness.

Paul’s second letter to Timothy reminds us that a disciple has both responsibility and opportunity to rekindle the flame of faith when it has waned. We are stewards of the flame. Faith, the gift of God - is irrevocable; what we do with it is however, variable. Sometimes we hone the gift of faith and keep it burning bright; at other times we neglect our first love and put our faith into storage. In Paul’s perspective, the flame of faith

A Year in the Conference

is passed on by the intentional formation of Jesus’ disciples and is further fanned into flame in our engagement in the mission of Jesus, a mission marked by demonstrations of supernatural power, love, and self-discipline.

The East Coast Conference has always been a movement of the Spirit, with whom we live in conscious and personal dependence in our discipleship and service.

The gift of faith, and various giftings from the Spirit are ours by grace. Even so, we may quench the Spirit – or we can fan into flame the gift of God, trading our timidity for the Spirit borne boldness of Christ Jesus.

The achievement of the expanded vision God is unveiling among us across the East Coast Conference and across the whole ECC calls for a broad rekindling of faith and an earnest fanning into flame of the Gospel’s purifying fire. Through a renewed effort to make and deepen disciples we will start and strengthen churches where Christ’s servant leaders are developed, His mercy & justice are advanced, and His Gospel or peace reaches the world.

One Generation to Another FROM FANS TO FLOURISHING FAMILY Perhaps the biggest move this past year in our shared ministry of church planting, is the profound shift from “fans” to "family!" In unprecedented ways, East Coast Conference established churches are powerfully fulfilling this biblical calling:

We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done...so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.

HIGHROCK NETWORK, GREATER BOSTON Most fully developed, six congregations, dozen worship services. Share leadership in New England Cohort gatherings.

HOPE CHURCH NYC NETWORK, NYC Well-developed, four congregations, seven worship services; hosting the first urban church planting conference in May 2016, with East Coast Conference & Covenant Church planting, partnering and co-sponsoring.

SANCTUARY NETWORK, RHODE ISLAND Two congregations, with third on track for late2016. Share leadership in New England Cohort gatherings.

These church planting networks are now the majority “farm system” for church planter candidates, and increasingly share in assessment, training, and coaching to the benefit of the whole ecosystem.

Jesus commanded the

church in Sardis (Revelation 3:2) to WAKE UP! The role of the Holy Spirit is to do just that- to revive our churches to do much more than ‘go through the motions’. The mission Christ has given to His church is too important to be taken lightly. Waking up involves listening to His voice and responding in obedience to His leading.

The result of the Spirit igniting His church is that we collectively grow deeper in Christ, and further in mission.

The Spirit of God wakes up His church to pursue Christ and His priorities in the world… to complete the deeds that are “unfinished." (Rev. 3:2b) When we are led and energized by the Holy Spirit, we move from anemia to vitality. Being more intentionally attentive to His influence is causing churches in the East Coast to wake up, and these individual “great awakenings” are breathing new life, new intentionality, new urgency, and new missional health into many of our churches.

WOMEN MINISTRIES CATHY BERGSTROM PRESIDENT, EAST COAST CONFERENCE WOMEN MINISTRIES GOD WAS SURELY ON THE MOVE IN THE EAST COAST CONFERENCE IN 2015!

Women Ministries has hosted several retreats and workshops in the past year and is looking forward to hosting more as this year unfolds. Your leadership team meets monthly via conference call and in person several times a year. Our objective is to look for God’s leading in all things and to pray for the women throughout the Conference.

ADVOCACY FOR VICTIMS OF ABUSE / MENDING THE SOUL East Coast Advocacy for Victims of Abuse (AVA) Coordinator, Priscilla Borden, opened her home for AVA training in Fitzwilliam, NH in March and April. Priscilla reported on AVA at the April Ministerium and spoke in June at a ladies’ luncheon. She held a Mending the Soul (MTS) Facilitators training in August and is working with a woman to help her toward becoming an MTS group facilitator.

RETREATS The Covenant Church in Bedford, NH presented a one-day springtime retreat, Finding Your Spiritual Oasis. Diane Hallenbeck spoke to women about trusting God while in the desert of life.

Pilgrim Pines, NH, was once again the setting for the Annual Fall Retreat. Reesheda GrahamWashington spoke to the 115 of us in attendance over the weekend about Saying Yes to God. Workshops included packing Bags of Hope, and AVA: What does being a safe-for-survivors church mean?. Women brought items for the bags with them to the retreat and ended up having enough supplies to pack 67 bags. We then learned the amount needed for the coming month—67. Praise God. Lost & Found was the theme for a one-day retreat facilitated by Pastor Linda Williams at Salem Covenant in Washington, CT. Four diverse speakers shared how God has and continues to impact their lives, from calling a non-believer to follow and ultimately serve the Lord, to helping clarify one’s identity in Christ. It was a powerful time for all who attended.

ANNUAL SPRING CELEBRATION Our Annual Spring Celebration was held April 2, 2016 at Evangelical Covenant Church in Springfield, MA. Over 50 women gathered to discuss Diamonds in the Dust (based on Isaiah 45:3) with speaker Denise Ridley. Workshops offered were AVA, Parenting, Evangelism, and Leadership.

We are here…praying in earnest for you. Praying to God for guidance and wisdom as we navigate through the year together. Please pray for our leadership team and for one another… that we continue to seek Him in all that we do…that our faith informs our decisions… that we can see evidence of His love for us each day. Every encounter…every word…every gesture…let it be to His glory. For nothing in God’s kingdom is wasted.

PILGRIM PINES

There is no place in my life where God has revealed himself more to me than at camp.

Pilgrim Pines is in itself the one place, my sacred space, my spiritual home where I meet God and He meets me. During my times at camp He has taught me so much and sends me home better equipped to live out my faith.

These are amazing days at Pilgrim Pines. God is moving us in new directions and we are making positive changes. We are updating and remodeling many of our units throughout all of our facilities. We are tightening up our infrastructure and we are continuing to build a place of trust and cooperation that inspires and motivates others to do the same. And we are sharing the good news that there is nothing more important than a life with Jesus.

Our most consistent retreat, Work & Worship, helps camp get ready for the summer season. 100 volunteers from our conference churches.

JULY / AUGUST Dave Cairns concludes his ministry at Pilgrim Pines and accepts a new call at Covenant Pines in Minnesota.

We celebrate Dave & his family and ask for God’s blessing as they go.

We welcome summer as both the Squanto & Mayflower summer staffs arrive to begin training.

The Pilgrim Pines Ministry Staff Internship Program expands to welcome four new Ministry Staff to the coming school year. Fall retreat season begins as we host many guest groups and celebrate hosting our ECC Women’s retreat weekend. New staff development opportunities are initiated and new marketing programs begin.

SEPT / OCT Outstanding Pilgrim Pines Mens’ retreat with guest speaker Dave Nesburg, a moving Fall Foliage retreat with Greg Athnos and numerous conference church retreats.

Over the last six months our registrations are up from prior years!

Our Mayflower family camp is headed toward several sold-out weeks this summer and at Camp Squanto we currently have a 36% increase in registration from where we were at this point in 2015. We are thankful for your support and prayers that go to this vital ministry up on Swanzey Lake. We are proud of our conference history and excited for our future as we look ahead with new hopes & vision as we trust God’s leading.

Hosted our conference Ministerial Pastors Ashram as well as several new guest groups. Lakeside cabin #5 receives a new roof, new structural elements and updated interior improvements.

Winterfest (Sr. high) celebrates it’s 21st anniversary in New York and welcomes Pastor Phil Beatty as speaker.

Phase two of the Camp Squanto Outdoor Adventure area adds a new Zipline to the program.

Attendance for Winterjam (grades 4-6) and Winterblast (middle school) retreats are ahead of projected numbers.

Phase three, and the final phase of the Camp Squanto Jr. Lodge remodel gets underway with a projected June 1st finish. The finished project will give camp six brand new cabins, remodeled bathrooms and a new meeting room.

We continue to make intentional efforts to improve our facilities with our Mayflower Makeover. Many units throughout camp receive renovations and upgrades. Our dedicated staff enjoys rest.



The 1st ever Spring Fling is held in Sturbridge, MA and raises just under $46,000 for Pilgrim Pines. Mayflower Lodge dining room remodel with new carpet, tables, chairs and new heating system installed.

The strength of the Mission for 136 years has been the company of those willing to do the work, stand in the gap for the seafarers, and bless them with a place of safety. Both chaplains and volunteers have worked side by side, always being sensitive to the needs – spiritual and physical – of the men and women who enter our ports. This past year was of course no exception. We made a visible effort to create spaces in our center and onboard the ships that allowed seafarers the opportunity to reclaim their lives. “You Can Be a World Changer” -That was our battle cry this past year at NESM as we reached out to these seafarers and reminded them that they are not forgotten nor unloved.

VOLUNTEERS ENGAGED During the 2015 cruise ministry season we were blessed with the compassionate help from 356 volunteers who joined us from 21 of our Covenant and Lutheran church partners as well as youth ministry teams from as far away as Pennsylvania, New Mexico, New Jersey, Maine and Virginia. These volunteers helped us staff the point of contact stations in our center, providing smiling faces and able hands. The seafarers with whom I speak comment regularly on the kindness of these volunteers, young and not so young, who surrender their valuable time to help them.

CHAPLAINS ONBOARD Throughout the year, our chaplains and ship visitors climbed onboard some 479 vessels, offering our specialized care and counseling. In Boston we have one full time chaplain as well as 2 volunteer ship visitors covering our ports, while in Providence we have one part-time chaplain and 3 volunteer ship visitors. These ship visits brought much needed relief to the seafarers, again offering counsel in the midst of their difficult lives at sea as well as companionship and conversation, and distributing 950 Bibles in English and native languages to those who have asked for Scripture. Our mission vans logged 38,000 miles in reaching the vessels while docked as well as

offering rides off and back to the ship. These shore leave visits provide respite from the confines of the cramped ship quarters and a place for seafarers to talk and even pray in private with chaplains.

GIFTS AT CHRISTMAS One of the very special and most rewarding strategies for our chaplains is bringing Christmas gifts to ships during November and December. NESM has carried on the Christmas Ditty Bag program through the generosity of the Women’s Seafarers Friend Society legacy gift. In November 2015, 81 volunteers from churches in New England gathered to help assemble 1,500 ditty bags whose contents were lovingly knitted, sewn and made throughout the year. We also received an additional 275 gifts directly from some of our partner Covenant and Lutheran churches. The gift bags and boxes were carried onto ships in ports from Portland, Portsmouth, Boston, Quincy, Fall River, and Narragansett Bay. These gifts, although small, carry with them the message of God’s love through the incarnation of the Christ child.

NETWORKED During 2015 we initiated an aggressive program to upgrade our communications with our church and individual partners, sharing stories of how they have helped our seafarers. Through newsletters, e-mails and descriptive videos, our task is to share how powerful this ministry can be in the lives of the men and women who conduct their jobs at sea.
