New Scholarship

Yashna is a first-generation college student from Nepal who struggled every semester to pay for college. Alex, her husband, had to drop out after not being able to pay his tuition. Collectively they both understand the struggle to find funds to continue higher education.

“As the years have progressed, God has blessed us and now we seek to pass that blessing on to others in need.”

A Word from theCEO

As we begin our 52nd year here at the East Central University Foundation, the campus has new energy and a positive environment.

We are pleased to welcome ECU’s 10th President, Wendell Godwin. Most of you know “Dean” Godwin as he has previously served the last 10 years as the Business Dean for East Central University. It is always great to have an ECU Alumnus as our President. President Godwin graduated in 1984 and came back to ECU after working in the global private sector. He has created new energy and positive ideas not only on our campus, but for the entire community. I like to say, “the Magic is back!” Welcome President Wendell Godwin.

We are also moving into some challenging times. Obviously, the World Economic Markets are in volatility. We continue to watch the markets closely and work with the Investment Committee and the Finance Committee to make sure we are properly maintaining sound business practices and the management of our funds. We look forward to next year at the ECU Foundation for bigger and better growth. We have over a 40% increase in our residence hall occupancy rate. New freshman enrollment is up. Concurrent enrollment is up. Transfer Student enrollment is up. Retention is up. What a great time to be part of the ECU family.

On behalf of all the staff here at the East Central University Foundation, we want to thank you, the Members of the Foundation, for your constant support through your financial resources, your wisdom and expertise in guiding the Foundation to many more years of success.

A Word from the President

It is an honor to serve as the 10th President of East Central University. The support from the campus, community, alumni, and stakeholders has been overwhelming as demonstrated by the hundreds of text messages, emails, personal letters, and phone calls. Let me offer my heartfelt thanks to all of you who have helped me on this journey. I joined the university in the spring of 2010 as the dean for the school of business. That journey has definitely helped the transition into my new role at ECU.

I am passionate about the ECU experience. As a firstgeneration student from Pauls Valley and an alum of this great University, I know how education can be transformative. It has changed my life and I want that same experience for our students today. The three leadership principles that I have used in my career are built on a foundation of Trust, Caring for Others, and a Commitment to Excellence. You will hear more about these elements as we work more closely together.

Our leadership team is working hard to shift the culture of the University to one that is more focused on engagement and delivering an amazing college experience for our students. I have enjoyed the excitement and enthusiasm on campus since the fall semester began in August. You can feel the excitement on the campus as we deliver on our commitment to excellence.

I appreciate the ECU Foundation and the ECU Alumni Association for hosting over a dozen listening sessions to help me meet and greet so many people over the summer. The University’s relationship with the Foundation is as strong as ever, we have an amazing opportunity in front of us as we work collaboratively to benefit our students and various campus programs.

Also, a thank you to those who are a part of the President’s Circle. Membership has more than doubled over the last 60 days and growing each week. Your support will benefit our students, student educational programs, athletics, arts, and our engagement programs. A special thanks to John, Buffy, Gerald, and Jessica for their personal support and to the Board of Directors and Trustees, your support is appreciated more than you know.

I hope to see you on campus soon and if you have any questions please reach out to my office personally at 580-559-5213. Our future is bright!

DistinguishedAlumnus

A 1992 graduate of East Central University, Anita Holloway has been named a Distinguished Alumna at ECU. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, graduating with honors and high academic achievement.

Currently a partner with Ernst & Young LLP (EY) in Tulsa, Holloway has come a long way since humble beginnings in Stuart, Oklahoma. EY is a global leader in assurance, tax, transaction and advisory services, operating in more than 150 countries. Holloway is responsible for helping clients meet reporting requirements by providing an objective and independent examination of financial statements provided to investors and other stakeholders.

As an ECU student, Holloway was not only an outstanding student and a reliable student worker, but she was also a leader outside the classroom. She was recognized as Student of the Month, Who’s Who and selected to serve on the Honor Court. She was a member of several organizations and served as president for the Honors Student Association and the Accounting Club.

“Anita’s first job was as a student worker in the ECU Foundation where people who care, give,” said Gerald Williamson, advancement officer with the ECU Foundation. “She learned well and has continued to be a giver of her time, expertise and resources.”

After graduating from ECU, she has also completed strategic leadership and business strategy programs through Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, Harvard Business School and the international business school INSEAD. She has been a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the State of Oklahoma since May 1993 and in the State of Texas since February 2005.

Holloway and her brother Alan (1992) established the Alan and Anita Holloway Accounting Scholarship through the ECU Foundation, further cementing her belief in the impact education can have on a person’s life. Her legacy and generosity to ECU and the Stonecipher School of Business will impact the future of ECU students for generations to come.

“Anita has been a global difference maker in her chosen profession and definitely to the students of ECU,” Williamson said.

Holloway is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants as well as the Oklahoma, Texas and Tennessee Societies of CPAs. She is past chairman of the accounting careers and ballot committees for the Oklahoma Society of CPAs. Holloway was appointed to the OU Board of Regents by Governor Kevin Stitt in 2020. She also serves as a member of the University of Oklahoma Energy Institute board, OU Price College board of advisers; and the Tulsa Area United Way board. She is a board member and 2019 treasurer for the Tulsa Regional Chamber and a member of the American Diabetes Association Tulsa Community Leadership Board. In 2005, Holloway was honored by the Fort Worth YWCA at their annual Tribute to Women in Business. She was a 2015 inductee into OU’s Arthur B. Adams Society, a member of Leadership Tulsa’s Class 48; a Women in Business honoree for the Fort Worth, Texas YWCA; and a Distinguished Graduate Award recipient for ECU’s School of Business. In 2019, Holloway was recognized as an Oklahoma Woman of the Year – 50 Making a Difference honoree.

Holloway’s career has taken her around the world, teaching an oil and gas accounting course in Abu Dhabi, observing a pigment plant in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and visiting the North Slope in Alaska, witnessing an offshore drilling rig in action.

Distinguished

Service Award

If you’ve spent any time in Ada, or the area, you have most likely heard the name Dicus, as in Dicus Supermarket, which draws up nostalgic memories of a coin-operated pony ride for only a penny, friendly service from the store clerks, and great savings.

Jim & Shirley “Ann” Dicus (Class of 1979)

The Dicus Supermarket was first started in 1940 by Frank Eugene Dicus. Frank’s son picked up the tradition and carried the store on through its many name changes and locations, finally shuttering its doors after more than 80 years in the Ada community.

But Jim and Ann Dicus are so much more than a grocery store name, and East Central University is honoring the couple for their Distinguished Service to ECU, the Ada area, and beyond.

“It’s an honor,” Jim said. “We always love giving back to our community. Always.”

“Jim and Ann are wonderful people and so deserving of the honor,” said John Hargrave, CEO of ECU Foundation Inc., and former ECU president.

“We really are humbled,” said Ann, a 1979 ECU graduate. “I’ve always been so proud of ECU and what they’ve done. ECU really is an asset to Ada and the surrounding area, especially considering the outstanding level of teachers that graduate from there.”

“The Dicuses have worked in many respects to promote ECU, including attending many activities, serving on boards, and raising scholarship money,” Hargrave, said. “They have been active in every aspect of community service in Ada for many years.”

Perhaps the most meaningful and honorable act of service attributed to Jim and Ann, is the annual Mike and Leslie Dicus Golf Tournament. The tournament is held each fall in memory of the couple’s son, Mike, and daughterin-law, Leslie. Leslie died in a traffic accident in Dallas in 2001. Mike passed away not too long after in 2002 from lung cancer. Proceeds from the tournament go to a scholarship fund, benefitting Ada area students. In November 2021, Jim and Ann presented ECU Foundation Inc., with a $15,693 check, which was matched by the Foundation. To date, the tournament has raised more than $856,000 for college scholarships.

“This is our way of giving back to our community, and it means a lot to us,” Jim said. “Mike and Leslie were just an outstanding couple in every way you could ever ask for.”

Jim has served the community as chairman of the Valley View Hospital Board, and as president of the following: Oklahoma Retail Grocers Association, Ada Area Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club of Greater Ada, Ada Boys Club, Oklahoma Coupon Board, Ada Industrial Development Corporation, and the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity chapter at the University of Oklahoma.

Ann has also given back with her time by serving on the Ada School Foundation, Youth Shelter, OU Stephenson Cancer Center Board of Advocates, Women’s Shelter, ECU Foundation, OU Parents Association, and as president of the Ada High School Band Association, Ada High School Tennis Association, and the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity Mom’s Association.

Around two dozen of Jim and Ann’s family members have graduated from ECU with bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

GivetoECU

Support ECU every time you shop on Amazon with

You Shop. Amazon Gives.

It’s simple: just list your favorite charitable organization as “East Central University Foundation, Inc.” and Amazon will donate at no cost to you. Make a donation to the ECU Foundation with smile.amazon.com

Gifts to the Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization under the IRS code, are taxdeductible and can be used as a tax-saving tool.

GIFTS OF CASH

These gifts are always welcome because they are available immediately to strengthen the University or begin earning income for the future.

GIFTS OF SECURITIES

These gifts include stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and IRAs, and also are available immediately to impact the work of the Foundation

GIFTS OF PERSONAL PROPERTY

Personal property can include coin collections, antique cars, gun collections, artwork, etc.

GIFTS OF REAL PROPERTY

Real estate, homes, business property and farmland that has grown in value can result in tax advantages through a charitable gift to the Foundation.

GIFTS OF TRUSTS

This can include charitable remainder trusts, unitrusts, lead trusts, family trusts, annuity trusts, etc., which can avoid capital gains taxes and provide an annual income for life.

GIFTS OF BEQUESTS

At a donor’s death, gifts directed by a will or a living trust are deducted from the most highly taxed portion of the donor’s estate, resulting in less taxes and a larger distribution of the estate to the heirs. This is perhaps the most basic and flexible of estate planning instruments.

GIFTS OF INSURANCE

By assigning ownership to the Foundation or making the Foundation the beneficiary of a life insurance policy that is no longer needed for its original purpose (such as sheltering children’s education), a donor can make a substantial gift at a low cost and take an immediate income tax deduction for the value of the policy. A donor then can contribute an amount equal to the policy’s premiums to the Foundation and deduct that gift as a charitable contribution. Proceeds of the policy will pass to the Foundation free of estate taxes.

Endowment

A donor gives to the Foundation to establish a named endowment in an area of his or her passion. The donor works with the Foundation to develop criteria for the endowment and guidelines for the distribution. The gift is entered into the ECU Foundation Endowment/Portfolio fund. The Foundation’s Investment committee has created an Investment Policy to maximize returns and minimize risk. A portion of the earnings on the invested funds will be used for distribution as outlined in the agreement, while the fund’s principal amount remains intact. By reinvesting the remainder of the earnings, the endowment continues to grow and is protected from inflation, providing annual support to ECU’s students/faculty/staff for decades to come.
