August is of course Airbourne, from the 11th to the 14th, whilst Eastbourne Fun Family Dog Show is on 7th August, and the South Coast Challenge is on 27th and 28th August. On 4th September it’s the MG South Downs Run and from 24th September to 2nd October it’s the Coast and Country Walking Festival. Have you ever felt misunderstood, or on the outside of things? One of the aims of Community Wise in Ocklynge Road is to serve Old Town by providing a venue and facilitating opportunities for community in action. Community Wise hosts groups for people of all ages, needs and interests, runs regular activities and courses on a wide variety of subjects, and offers a great venue for parties and meetings at very reasonable cost. On Friday mornings everyone is welcome at the Gather Pop Up Café to enjoy company over coffee or tea and have a tasty lunch together. The morning Village Market on 24th September at Community Wise is another opportunity to support local businesses and enterprises, and participate in being community together.

Britain’s Waterways There are more than 2,000 miles of waterways around Britain, so why not make the most of them?

Take a stroll: From a relaxing amble after Sunday lunch, to a full day’s hike, our waterways offer numerous opportunities for walking. There are many circular routes you can take and the toll-paths are car-free. The Newton Poppleford & River Otter walk in Devon, for example, is a beautiful walk along the river, stopping off in the picturesque village of Tipton St John. Find a route near you at www.ifootpath.com.

Cycle: Many of the canal paths are ideal for cycling. Pick up an Ordnance Survey map, or plan your route with www.sustrans.org.uk. The Trans Pennine Trail is a good option, with more than 60% of the route being trafficfree and fairly flat.

Enjoy a leisurely boat ride: Whether you hire a narrow boat for a day, or a week, boating is clearly one of the best ways to enjoy Britain’s waterways. Visit www. waterways.org.uk for advice and tips. There are more than 100 boat hire firms, with many of the larger ones offering the option to pick up and drop off at different locations. You don’t need any previous experience, as most firms will give you a short training course before you set off.

Try canoeing: Almost 2 million people go canoeing in Britain. It’s a great way to keep fit while exploring the countryside. Check out www.canoe-england.org. uk for inspiration. Trails are colour coded from easy to challenging, so you can pick a route to suit your ability.

Purton to Sharpness on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal, for example, is classed as an ideal route for beginners. You’ll pass through several villages on route, so may even be able to stop off for a quick cuppa. You need a license to paddle on many of Britain’s waterways, which can be bought from the Canal and River Trust: www.canalrivertrust.org.uk Feeling adventurous? We might think of white water rafting as something to do on holiday, but there are a few British centres. The National White Water Centre, for example, runs sessions on the Welsh mountain river Afon Tryweryn, with prices starting from just £35 for a taster lesson.

Cast off: A leisurely day’s fishing can be a great way to unwind. You will need to purchase a rod fishing license from the Post Office before you cast off. An annual license starts at £27, though you can also buy licenses for shorter periods of time from just £3.75. Fishing rights are often owned by a local fishing club, but a Waterway Wanderers permit (£20 a year) gives you access to most stretches.

SAIL AWAY TO ANOTHER WORLD WITH BRAND NEW STAGE SHOW ISLANDS IN THE STREAM The Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers Story Wednesday 10th August, 7.30pm Celebrating the queen and king of country, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, brand-new stage show Islands in the Stream is coming to town. . .

Stacked with multi-million-selling country music hits like Jolene, Ruby, 9 to 5, Lucille, I Will Always Love You, Here You Come Again, The Gambler, Coward of the County, Love is Like a Butterfly and Lady, theatregoers are invited to enjoy the awesome vocals and gentle humour of Dolly and Kenny’s legendary live spectaculars, says show producer Michael Taylor.

“Bring-the-house-down performances, a superb score and supreme musicianship tell the story of the simple Smoky Mountains farm girl’s rise to country music’s biggest superstar,” says Michael.

Underlining the cast’s dedication to mastering the sound of the original artistes, the performers and band have recorded an album of original songs in the style of Dolly Parton. Islands in the Stream even features the lead track from the release, the song slotting in seamlessly between all the multi-million-selling Dolly and Kenny favourites featured in the production’s hit-packed score.

The performance is quite literally tightly stitched together – three of the outfits worn by the night’s female lead are exact replicas of Dolly’s iconic outfits, custom-made for the show.

“The star of the show is a master of stage craft,” says Michael. “Dolly’s unmistakable phrasing is closely reproduced, bringing Miss Parton’s distinctive vocals and loveable personality to life.”

As seen on national TV, the evening’s Dolly is joined by a Stars in Their Eyes winner. The night’s Kenny Rogers’ own solo show has been seen from Orkney to the Isle of Wight, Dubai to St Lucia and all points in between.

“Both leads revel in Dolly and Kenny’s famed warmth and humour,” says Michael, “making Islands in the Stream a delightful evening of song and audience interaction.

who looks like Helena. But it can’t be. It turns out to be Allie, her old best friend’s 23-year-old daughter. As she befriends her the mysteries surrounding the events of that summer in Ischia start to unravel. Her mother never talked much about that summer so Allie travels to Ischia to find out for herself.

Ischia: an Italian island in the bay of Naples. When Liddy receives a phone call from her best friend, Helena, inviting her to spend the summer there as an au pair to a wealthy family, she can hardly resist. Helena assures her that the children will be no bother and they can spend two months sunbathing on the beach. Only it doesn’t turn out that way. When one of their young charges goes missing they immediately fall under suspicion and after that summer they never see each other again.

The action switches between location and time periods as Feeny unveils the events that changed so many lives.

Her descriptions of Ischia are truly magical, evoking a carefree exotic lifestyle, and contrast with the clear descriptions of the author’s native Liverpool. A great read.

Eva Ibbotson is an awardwinning children’s author, but her novels are not as well known by adults. Born in Austria, she fled to England under the Nazi regime and this has had an impact on some of her novels, many of which use Austria as a backdrop.

However, Which Witch? is clearly rooted in the English countryside and is a fantastical novel for readers aged 9-11.

As the story begins we learn of the darkest wizard in the country. Arriman the Awful lives near the village of Todcaster and spends his days performing dark magic.

However, over the years he has grown tired of this and is delighted to receive a prophecy that a much darker wizard will appear and take over his role. However, when no one appears, he decides that there is only one thing for it: he must take a wife and have a child who will take over from him. So he calls together the seven witches of Todcaster and holds a contest to find the darkest witch.

And what a bunch of women they are! Here, Ibbotson’s writing has a touch of Roald Dahl as she describes the horrible nature of them. All except one, Belladonna.

The only problem is that Belladonna is a white witch who is only able to do good magic and Arriman is looking for a dark witch. With a bit of help from an earthworm, Belladonna sets out to win, but ends up proving that good magic can triumph as the true heir appears. By Willow Coby

David Bomberg: A Sense of Place

9th July – 25th September 2016, Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne Towner is delighted to present David Bomberg: A Sense of Place, an exhibition of nearly forty landscape paintings made throughout the career of an artist now recognised as one of the most exceptional and original of his generation.

David Bomberg (1890-1957) was the son of PolishJewish immigrants, who moved to the East End of London when he was five. After a brief period training as a lithographer, Bomberg studied at the Westminster School of Art under Walter Sickert, and later at the Slade School of Fine Art. He was a pioneer of early modernism who created a striking body of expressionistic landscape paintings and drawings following his experiences during World War I. He was disregarded by the British art establishment until after his death in 1957, when his work dramatically increased in value. It was another three decades before he achieved widespread recognition, when Tate Gallery mounted a major retrospective in 1988.

David Bomberg: A Sense of Place brings together significant works from the artist’s almost forty-year period of painting and drawing in landscape. From the 1920s to the late 1950s, Bomberg spent extensive periods of time abroad, notably in Toledo, Ronda and Asturias in Spain, Cyprus and Palestine, as well as London and Cornwall.

From 1923 to 1927 Bomberg worked in Palestine as the official painter for the Zionist Organisation, documenting the settlement of Jewish immigrants in Jerusalem. In an attempt to satisfy his commission, and disenchanted with the ‘machine age’ as a result of his experiences during World War I, he combined the modernist geometric style of his pre-war work with the figurative observation of the English landscape school in works such as Jerusalem, Looking to Mount Scopus, 1925; The Broken Aqueduct; Wadi Kelt, near Jericho, 1926 and The South East Corner, Jerusalem, 1926. Throughout the 1930s Bomberg’s art became broader and more impassioned, as he sought to convey the essence of his impressions of landscapes in Spain and elsewhere in works such as Valley of La Hermida, Asturias, Spain, 1935 and Ronda Bridge, 1935, although this work met with little approval in Britain.

During World War II Bomberg produced an outstanding series of Bomb Store paintings and charcoal drawings of the blitz-ravaged City of London as seen from a tower near St Paul’s Cathedral. One of these studies was eventually worked into the dramatic oil painting Evening in the City of London, 1944. Although these works did not lead to further commissions from the War Artists Committee, some now reside in the collections of IWM London and Tate.

Despite being overlooked as an artist during much of his lifetime, Bomberg was a well-regarded teacher, and in 1947 formed the Borough Group with his students. His last years were overshadowed by the realisation that his art had low recognition and was even belittled in Britain.

His final landscapes and figure works are amongst his most powerful, including a charcoal on paper work, The Bridge at Ronda, 1954, and his last painting, Tajo and Rocks, Ronda (The Last Landscape), 1956-57.

I have had tremendous success with ferns. They are the most useful plant for shade. My favourite is the ostrichplume fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris. Plant them under trees and shrubs and watch the stunning lime-green foliage unfold each spring. A few years ago I had a wonderful purple New Zealand flax, Phormium tenax. Its bold, dramatic fountains of spiky foliage made it a firm favourite. Unfortunately it succumbed to an extended period of sub-zero temperatures one winter. I will try again but with the much hardier green variety. Many people forget grasses when they think about foliage, but there are some wonderfully attractive varieties. Try Miscanthus sinensis Zebrinus. The leaves look like green ribbons, striped with yellow and reach chest height. Cut it down to ground level each February. Finally, try the golden-leaved Catalpa bignonioides Aurea. Grow it as a large bush. Prune each stem back to a sprouting bud around knee-height each spring and mulch with manure at the same time. Dahlias are one of the most popular garden flowers seen in summer, a herbaceous perennial plant native to Mexico with 42 different species. Flower heads can be as small as 5cm or as large as 30cm in all shades of colour except blue. The dahlia was bought to the UK in 1802 by English nurseryman John Fraser who in the following year had them flowering in his greenhouse. Much work has gone into Dahlia propagation since then to develop the different varieties we have today. In Central America several dahlia cultivars are grown for their tubers from which a mocha-tasting extract is taken and used to flavour beverages. Prior to the discovery of insulin, inulin a naturally occurring fruit sugar was given to diabetics.

Inulin is still used in clinical tests today. In 2015 there were 16 exhibits of Dahlias in the show within the 6 classes available – 2016 has the same 6 classes to show off these colourful popular flowers.

e all love flowers. They’re what gardening is all about, and the fact that they tend to be relatively short-lived makes them special. But a garden can’t survive on flowers alone. It needs to look attractive all year round. This is where friendly foliage plants come in to their own. Many nonevergreen plants have beautiful foliage between April and November and we’d be mad not to take full advantage of it. Rodgersia pinnata is an excellent example. It has huge, attractive bronze, leathery leaves which are almost sculptural in appearance. As a bonus it sends up feathery cream flowers in the summer. It likes soil which doesn’t dry out. A pebble mulch works brilliantly because it complements the plant. Hostas have truly beautiful leaves, but I’ve tried and failed with them on many occasions because my garden is home to a race of super-slugs who seem able eat hostas faster than I can plant them!

I’ve had some success with the variety Frances Williams, which is less prone to attack, though I still need to go on slug patrol every evening! Hostas like a moist soil, so

A barbecue should be a fun event, and he or she who is cooking should have time to mix with friends and family, rather than being stuck behind the grill all afternoon, so it’s best to keep things simple. and burgers are all very well, but with just a little more effort and imagination you can wow your guests with Mediterranean flavours. Kebabs can be prepared in advance, using meat and veg marinated beforehand in your choice of herbs and spices to pack in the flavour.

A kebab is a small meal on a stick, so it certainly ticks the barbecue easy-peasy box for me. Here’s a couple of ideas from the ‘Simply beef and lamb’ and the ‘BBC good food’ websites:

Lamb, Mint and Halloumi Kebabs

Ingredients:

450g/1lb lean boneless lamb leg or shoulder, cut into 2.5cm/1inch cubes; 30ml/2tbsp freshly chopped mint; Salt and freshly milled black pepper; 15ml/1tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice; 15ml/1tbsp olive oil; 100g/4oz halloumi cheese, cut into small cubes

Method: Place all the kebab ingredients into a large,

shallow dish, toss gently, cover and leave to marinate for up to 2 hours in the refrigerator. Thread the lamb and cheese on to 8 short or 4 long wooden (previously soaked in water for 30 mins to stop them burning) or metal skewers. Cook the kebabs on a prepared barbecue or preheated grill for 12-16 minutes, turning occasionally until any meat juices run clear. Serve with houmous and a green salad.

Glazed vegetable kebabs

Ingredients: 1 tbsp clear

honey; 1 tsp grainy mustard; 2 tbsp oil; 1 courgette, thickly sliced; 1 small aubergine, cut into chunks; 1 small red onion, cut into wedges; 8 cherry tomatoes; 1 orange pepper, cut into chunks;

Method: Soak 4 wooden skewers in water for 30 mins. Blend the honey, mustard and oil with seasoning. To assemble, thread veg onto skewers and brush with glaze.

Cook on the barbecue, brushing with any remaining glaze before serving. Enjoy!
