CVN Restaurant Review with Igor - Lake Chabot Market

F

or his first installment of the CVTV Restaurant Review, our new Food Editor Igor Breyman headed to the renovated Lake Chabot Public Market on Lake Chabot Road. Igor opted to try something from almost all the food kiosks open at the market, sampling a “perfectly flavor balanced” roasted oolong milk tea from the T-4 kiosk, an octopus ball appetizer from Shumi Ramen, that had “great texture and flavor” along with the #6 pork ramen bowl that Igor said was, “Really savory. The pork was tender and falls apart in your mouth.” To top it all off, Igor had a “Doughboy” ice cream treat with a scoop of purple yam and avocado cream, inside a halved donut. It was topped off with fruity pebbles and circus cookies. This treat was so good, it almost left Igor speechless. The market features C&H meat counter and Mama Cho’s BBQ and will soon have a coffee kiosk open. “This place is great. It’s new, ethnic and communal. It’s perfect for Castro Valley,” said Igor, who added he highly recommend anyone give the Lake Chabot Public Market a try.

Food Trucks Return to CV Boulevard

T

he downtown food event that drew fire from shopping center officials and blockbuster support from customerers has returned to our downtown area for another five months.

“We are very excited to have the return of the food trucks dialed in,” said Bill Mulgrew of the Castro Valley / Eden Area Chamber of Commerce, who are coordinating the Food Truck event in

the parking lot of Certified Tire on CV Boulevard. The event raised rankles among officials with the Village Shopping Center last year. The center had parking lot entries blocked from the truck area— asserting the trucks deterred customers from the center by draining available parking. The situation caused a significant brouhaha on social media. Timeline: The event started April 19 and continues every Tuesday night from 6-9 PM through December 26. Mulgrew told CVN food truck patrons can expect more seating, more tables and improved lighting. Due to limited parking, people are encouraged to walk and bicycle. To that end, Eden Bicycles will offer “bike valets” to lock up bikes nearby for safe keeping.

Flight Magazine Features CV Photographer

It is the thing of dreams for

a lover of airplanes and photography to have a major publication ask to use your image as their page one feature. That dream became reality for Castro Valley photographer and pilot Chet Wehe, whose breathtaking photo is featured on the cover page of the March edition of “In Flight USA” magazine. “One of their editors cold called me out of nowhere,” said Wehe during a recent interview, while out on an assignment filming a local law enforcement feature. “They said they had been following my social media page for two years and wanted to use the photo for the magazine.” Wehe’s picture is of Super Dave Mattisen’s MX2 and Mike Wiskus’ Pitts planes taken over Angel Island during this year’s Fleet Week in San Francisco. While he is consistently immersed in photography and film projects, Wehe works as IT tech for a local school district. He’s been flying planes for five years, and combining photography with flying for about three years. “It’s all super exciting,” added Wehe. CLEANING UP CV WITH JEFF STONE

You

may not know Jeff Stone, but chances are you have probably seen him on his segway vehicle, criss-crossing Castro Valley streets, picking up roadside trash and debris. Here are a couple of interesting “finds” Stone made on Castro Valley streets he passed on to CVN during a recent interview: The first item (above right) was sent over in January. Stone expains, “I found this message written on a piece of sheet metal along the sidewalk at the Castro Valley creek. Almost hated to remove it.” The second item (below photo) was sent over on February 4. “More torn up athletic shores in the RieAid Parking lot. Very, very odd,” Stone added.

WHAT’S NEW ON CASTRO VALLEY BLVD.

T

he downtown area of Castro Valley Boulevard is an ever changing, bustling corridor of business and commerce for our town. The following are updates and developments regarding vacant buildings, businesses relocating and improvement projects on CV Boulevard. The Castro Valley / Eden Area Chamber of Commerce are planning to move their office down CV Boulevard. By May 1, their office will relocate to a new location (photo below) at 3160 Castro Valley Boulevard across from Lucca Deli from their longtime address of 3467 Castro Valley Boulevard. The move for the CVEA Chamber will

yield more office space for chamber staff, while reducing their existing monthly rent charges. The purchase and eventual overall rehabilitation of the Daughtrey building continues to come along. Developer David Greensfelder says the transfer of the building from the successor agency with the county is continuing to go forward. Once that process is finalized, the sale of the buidling will close. Greensfelder told CVN people can look forward to a “contemporary” new appearance for the building as part of the pending improvements. More updates on the building will come in the near future.

RICKEY & NINA’S TRAVEL ADVENTURES

Our

last trip of 2015 brought us into the bush and the back roads of South Africa. With our comfort and adventures levels in check, for 5 days we did our own safari game drives in Kruger National Park. Without the aid of a guide or being on a organized tour, we traveled on the back roads in this real ZOO, delivering the CV News to the residents of the park. Mr. Elephant will remember us delivering the news as an elephant never forgets. We also delivered the news to the rural villages in South Africa. This was a Nat Geo trip.
