This project aims to make the route maps and the other information displayed at the stations more effective and user-friendly in its communication.

BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit System) is designed to improve quality and reduce delay caused by other transport systems. A significant amount of the route should allow for exclusive right of way for the buses. The Jan Marg or the Ahmedabad BRTS has 67 km of operational routes and is an integrated bus system designed to accommodate the ever-expanding boundaries of Ahmedabad

CONTEXT

Minimizing pre-requisites of literacy and language trying to cater to all bus commuters.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

MAPS

Maps are a way of representing a space so as to impart information.

Route maps attempt at predetermining the information needed and representing that, they attempt to understand the process of navigation and how we process and filter information.Geographical maps stay true to the lay of the land but complicate further the process of reading a map by imparting nformation that is not necessarily required.

Harry Beck and Massimo Vignelli used this property of space to create subway maps for London and New York respectively.

The seven bridges of koingsberg is a mathematical problem solved by Leonhard Euler and the introduction of the subject of topology.

Topological maps exploit the properties of space that do not change with distortion.

Geographical maps stay true to the lay of the land but complicate further the process of reading a map by imparting information that is not necessarily required.

Curitiba was the first city to have BRTS. The routes are plotted in rings radially expanding. It attempted to replicate the reliability and efficiency of light rail at a lower capital. Curitiba has recorded a reduction in private transportation by 28%

BRTS was set up to preserve the historical city centre.Provide transportation to the CBD.Connect suburbs and increase viability of city centres reduced due to excessive private transportation.

BRTS Ahmedabad BRTS aims to create a infrastructure dependent public transportation system that is flexible to the commuter trends.

It aims to increase public accessibility of road spaces.The infrastructure and fare structure of BRTS makes available shorter trips for the commuters increasing acessibility. BRTS is being promoted as a smart new mode of transportation trying to attract young earning commuters reducing private transportation.

Some BRTS are established to connect the suburbs to the Central Business District.They have trunk and feeder lines that connect to the CBD and residential lines respectively. Ahmedabad has a strong industrial base with randomised development.

Maps are divided into three types Large, handheld and tiny maps.

Hand held maps Maps that are commercially printed can have point sizes upto 6pt.When printed on an inkjet printer a text size of 9 point is suitable.These maps can contain complex symbology and lots of data and information needs to be viewable from 24 inches away.

Tiny maps Maps with simple iconography.

Casing of lines will not be useful as the symbology will be lost.

Minimum information.

Large format maps As with tiny maps should have minimum information.Minimum typesize should be 24 pts.

50-100 % larger iconography and 100-300 % greater line width than handheld maps.

REBRIEF To create any kind of change/ addition to system that acts as a navigation tool/aid for BRTS commuters.

Navigation through stations Ticket information reorganisation.

Map as a navigation tool

There is a need to reorganise information on tickets.The tickets are printed with thermal printing.

The colour logo is printed permanently. The rest is printed digitally. The information processed in every journey is the date andname of the station and the time. If a permanent line is printed on the ticket and each journey as the terminals marked it would be easier to navigate the system.

• While working out the structure of the route I initially stayed as faithful to the actual geography as I could using only parts of circles and vertical and horizontal lines as I thought that it might help represent the districts better.

• I quickly realised that i was infact compressing some areas they were the right size in relation to others but needed to be represented larger for the format i have plannedneeded to open it out so that the districts would be clear at a small scale

• Some areas were crowded because the stations were too close to each other and the routes didnt allow for that.

The colours are randomhowever high contrasting colours would be used for the map.

• At first I used squares to represent districts by approximating the area which visually worked however limited the number of districts i could represent.

Does not indicate when the route enters mixed traffic.

Current map categorizes lines into colours.There is no indication of such a system in function.It does not add to the navigation of the routes.

The purely topological nature of the map does not give orientation within the city to the commuter.

The names of the stations are colloquial and ambiguous

Should it give indication of AMTS routes?

ITERRATIONS

Corrected the issues in the previous iteration opened out the routes in specific areas so that areas and stations had breathing space.

Also marked the AMTS districts in the inner city. Replaced geometric shapes in lieu of more organic forms to give a more accurate estimation of size and shape Traced the paths plotted railway and river as importsnt demarkations

Final iteration so far in terms of the information. I opened out a few areas resulting in distortion which hopefully wont affect the readability. Marked out the area where the line enters mixed traffic indicating longer amount of time for the journey.

This map designed to assist fare calculations.This is a location specific though has a certain amount of flexibility in terms of usage.

It includes a scale that can be applied to any station. This map shows the fares to be paid from Akhbar nagar to any place in the map. For example a commuter from Akhbar nagar to Odhav district will see 16 and 29 marked between his locations looking at the scale will realise that the scale indicates the amount of Rs. 19 is to be paid for his journey.

Initially this project was an attempt to get rid of my fear of maps and directions and geography. This project has taught me to value the process of taking decisions during a project each have to be calculated and validated by a substantial amount of people. The process of learning to do a design project was daunting and also mustering the self motivation to do the grunt work and not skip the steps. Learning how to think and come up with an individual design process and way of thinking way something I have taken away form this experience.
