ABRILLANTADO

BUFFING

Se refiere a la etapa del proceso escultórico en la cual se pretende dar un fuerte brillo a la superficie. En este proceso, se utilizan agentes abrasivos para eliminar las irregularidades de la superficie. Se puede realizar mediante el uso de máquinas o procedimientos manuales.

Refers to the stage in metal working of creating a high polish. In this process, gentle abrasives are rubbed against metal to smooth away small surface irregularities.

Buffing can be accomplished with machines or hand tools.

ACERO

(metal) Aleación de hierro y carbón.

(metal) An alloy of iron and carbon.

ACERO DE DAMASCO.

DAMASCUS STEEL

(metal). Se refiere al acero que tiene una pátina ondulada. El acero de Damasco se crea al soldar piezas de acero, que posteriormente se doblan y se golpean a martillo. El proceso se repite hasta obtener el resultado deseado.

(metal) Refers to steel consisting of wavy patterns in its finish. Damascus steel is created by welding together pieces of steel, then folding the piece onto itself, and hammering that piece flat. The process is repeated until the desired line patterns have been achieved.

Referido en ocasiones a una superficie satinada, el alabastro es un yeso de textura muy fina, normalmente blanco, que es fácil de tallar, y cuando es fino, se convierte en traslúcido.

Sometimes referred to as satin spar, alabaster is a fine-textured gypsum, usually white, that is easily carved and translucent when thin.

ANODIZACIÓN

ANODIZING

(metal) En cuanto al proceso de tintura de una superficie de aluminio mediante el recubrimiento del metal con una película de óxido de aluminio, mientras está en un baño de ácido. Después se limpia el y se sumerge en tinte orgánico, permitiendo que la película de óxido absorba el colorante. La superficie se vuelve a limpiar una vez más y se sella con lanolina.

(metal) Referring to the process of dyeing an aluminum surface by coating the metal with a film of aluminum oxide while in an acid bath. The metal is next cleaned and immersed in organic dye, allowing the oxide film to absorb the dye. The surface is then cleaned a final time and sealed with lanolin.

(1) An earthly material, finely grained which is formed from the decomposition of igneous rock. When this material is combined with water, it becomes plastic enough to be shaped. When subjected to red heat the material becomes progressively more dense resembling rock.

Un método de fundición en el que se usa arena húmeda contra un modelo para hacer un molde.

BAJORRELIEVE

BAS RELIEF

Método escultórico en el cual la superficie, de metal o piedra es escarbada, o se le quita materia. El plano del material trabajado es el que queda más elevado, dando una sensación de plenitud.

Meaning “low relief”. Bas relief is a sculpting method in which the surface of a flat piece of metal or stone is carved or etched away. The image is comprised of the raised or indented sculptural patterns which remain close to the surface plane.

También se llama zócalo. La base es donde se fija o monta la escultura. Un bloque (de cualquier forma, dimensión o material colocado entre una escultura y su pedestal).

Todos estos términos se pueden confundir con pedestal, que también se define como una base o cimiento!

Also called plinth. The base is what the sculpture is attached, fixed or mounted on. A block (of any shape or dimension and material placed between a sculpture and its pedestal). These terms can all be confused as a pedestal is also defined as a base or foundation!

CERA PERDIDA.

LOST WAX

La técnica de la cera perdida consiste en realizar un modelo en cera que se rodea de yeso. Cuando el yeso se endurece, se calienta para derretir la cera. El resultado es un molde de yeso para realizar la escultura de metal o plástico.

A casting technique in which a carved wax model is placed in a container that is then filled with plaster. After the plaster hardens, the container is fired to melt the wax. The result is a plaster mould suitable for casting metal or plastic.

(metal) Técnica de esmaltado, en la que se crean unas celdillas vacías, que posteriormente se rellenan con esmaltes de colores. Se somete la pieza a cocción, y una vez fría, se pule.

Refers to the decorative and intentional “netting” created on the surface of a glaze due to a variation in the expansion and contraction of both the glaze and the clay body in the kiln.

ARCHITECTURAL SCULPTURE

Cualquier componente de un edificio o estructura que se ha modelado, tallado o soldado por un escultor e integrado de alguna manera en el conjunto para embellecer o mejorar la que, a diferencia del trabajo creado para la visualización de forma independiente. Por ejemplo una cariátide o una chimenea ornamental o una repisa. Los dos temas o formas de arte de la escultura y la arquitectura han estado estrechamente relacionados a través de los siglos.

With relation to sculpture, architectural means any component of a building or structure which has been modelled, carved or welded by a sculptor and integrated into the whole in some manner so as to embellish or enhance it, as distinguished from work created for display independently. A caryatid is an example of this. And so is an ornate fireplace surround or mantel. The two subjects or art forms of sculpture and architecture have been closely related through the ages.

Most commonly, a hollow container used in the casting process, resembling the negative image of the object desired. Plaster is the most traditional material for molds, though they may also be made of latex, rubber or gelatin. Can also refer to a form over which materials such as molten glass and leather-hard ceramics are draped to shape them.

Un molde negativo, que se utiliza en la escultura para la fundición de metales. Se compone de arcilla y tierra ya sea arena o yeso de Paris mezclado con arcilla, yeso pulverizado, fibras de amianto y cola que se mezclan para el proceso de cera perdida.

A containing negative mould, used in sculpture for casting metals. It consists of either earth clay and sand or plaster of Paris mixed with clay, pulverized plaster, asbestos fibres and glue size when mixed up for the lost-wax process.

SGRAFITTO.

SGRAFFITO

(cerámica) Del italiano, significa literalmente "arañar". Es un proceso decorativo en el cual se araña una línea sobre la superficie antes de someterla a cocción, para exponer la parte interior de la arcilla.

(ceramics) From the Italian, meaning literally “to scratch.” Sgraffito is a decorative process in which a line is scratched through a layer of slip or glaze before firing to expose the clay underneath.
