BridgetPhillipson, EducationSecretary pledges300newstate nurseriesinEngland

within12months

The education secretary is set to announce a campaign to convert vacant classrooms as part of the free childcare initiative.

In addition to converting vacant classrooms, the campaign will also include recruitment drives to attract skilled nursery staff, training programs to upskill existing educators, and partnerships with local councils to streamline the implementation process. The government hopes that by investing in early childhood education, it will not only support families but alsocontributetothelong-termeconomicand socialwell-beingofthecountry.

By next September, the education secretary, Bridget Phillipson, has committed to opening 300 new state nurseries within England's schools, as the government works swiftly to secure spaces ahead of the rollout of free childcare.

This ambitious plan aims to alleviate the burden on working parents and provide children with a solid early start in their education journey. The initiative will prioritize areas with the highest demand for childcare services, ensuring that every child has access to quality early years education.

A friendly, warm and holistic service open to all.

NEW COLLEGE DURHAM PARTNERS WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS TO BRIDGE TEACHING ASSISTANT SKILLS GAP

New College Durham is proud to announce a collaboration with the New College Durham Academies Trust (NCDAT) to address the growing demand for skilled teaching assistants in the region

This partnership aims to equip individuals interested in pursuing a career in education with the knowledge, qualifications, and firsthand experience needed to excel in the field

NCDAT is an established Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) comprising of both primary and secondary schools. Its key mission and that of all its schools is to ‘provide the best education in order to empower learners, improve lives, and strengthen communities ’

The comprehensive training programme includes a five-week course, held Monday to Wednesday, which covers key skills and qualifications for aspiring teaching assistants. Following the training, participants will gain additional invaluable experience in one of the seven schools within the Trust, ensuring they are wellprepared for future roles. Upon completion, graduates will be ready to apply for teaching assistant positions either within the Trust’s schools or at other educational establishments across the region.

Lisa Waller, Director of Business Development (Sales and Growth) at New College Durham, shared her excitement about the initiative:

"We are delighted to be working with the New College Durham Academies Trust, designing a programme that truly meets the needs of aspiring teaching assistants The hands-on work experience, which is also provided as part of this initiative, is invaluable, as it is often a key requirement for those looking to secure this type of role. Participants will benefit enormously from this experience, which will help open doors to meaningful employment opportunities’.

To help interested individuals learn more, information and enrolment sessions will be held at North Durham Academy on 17th September from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, and at Wellfield School on 18th September from 10:00 am to 11:00 am

To secure a spot or learn more about the programme, contact enquiries.training@newdur.ac.uk

This initiative not only supports the career ambitions of aspiring teaching assistants but also helps to address a current critical skills gap in the education sector by ensuring that schools across County Durham have access to the qualified support staff they need.

A London nursery, known as a 'second home' by its young ones and recognized for their 'excellent' math skills, has received an outstanding rating from Ofsted. Inspectors praised Young England Kindergarten in Pimlico for its meticulously planned curriculum and emphasis on engaging and stimulating activities in a closelyknit nursery environment.

During a March inspection, children were observed exploring the smell and texture of tomatoes and cucumbers, as well as chopping them to discover seeds before planting them in the nursery garden. The report highlighted how staff effectively teach children about the growth process, linking it to healthy eating habits and the benefits of fruits and vegetables for digestion.

Inspectors found children at a school had a strong passion for books, with weekly visits from a storyteller and engaging activities like acting out stories. Children showed excellent math skills, counting beyond 10 and doing simple addition.

Staff were commended for home visits, electronic updates to parents, and workshops on behavior management. Ofsted discovered that children demonstrated 'excellent' physical abilities, frequently utilizing beams for balance. The kids enjoy weekly visits from specialized ballet instructors and football coaches. Head teacher Lucinda Byron Evans expressed her joy over achieving an 'outstanding' rating from Ofsted following the recent inspection in March.
