By introducing children to the wonders of nature, nurseries are planting the seeds for a future where children are not only more connected to the natural world but also more invested in protecting it
The outdoor environment is becoming an increasingly important part of early years education With research highlighting the benefits of outdoor play and nature-based learning, more and more nurseries across the UK are embracing nature as an essential classroom for young children This shift is not only providing a richer, more stimulating learning environment but also helping children build the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world
In the early years, learning isn’t confined to the walls of a classroom In fact, it’s the world beyond those walls that can offer some of the most valuable learning experiences for young children For centuries, children have been naturally drawn to the outdoors, and for good reason The sights, sounds, and textures of nature engage all the senses, creating an immersive environment that enhances physical, emotional, and cognitive development
Research has long demonstrated the many benefits of nature-based learning. Children who spend time outdoors are more likely to develop better physical health, stronger social skills, and heightened cognitive abilities. More recently, studies have also highlighted the significant role that outdoor play can have on emotional wellbeing, resilience, and mental health areas that are critical in the early years
In an age where screen time often dominates children's lives, nurseries have begun to recognise the importance of balance Nature, with its boundless opportunities for exploration and creativity, is becoming an essential part of the educational experience, offering children the chance to learn in ways that are both meaningful and lasting
One of the most powerful aspects of nature-based learning is its ability to engage children in hands-on, experiential education. Outdoor environments offer endless opportunities for children to explore, experiment, and discover. Whether it’s the thrill of climbing a tree, the wonder of watching a caterpillar transform into a butterfly, or the simple joy of feeling the textures of leaves and stones, nature allows children to learn by doing
As the benefits of nature-based learning continue to gain recognition, nurseries are increasingly incorporating outdoor environments into their educational practices Nature provides children with more than just a place to play; it offers a rich, dynamic learning environment that nurtures physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development. By embracing nature, nurseries are not only enriching children’s learning experiences but also fostering a deeper connection to the world around them one that will last a lifetime
A nursery owner has raised concerns that the government’s funding for childcare is “wholly inadequate” and warned it could result in the closure of businesses withinthesector.
Karen Richards, who runs Wolds Childcare with six locations in Nottinghamshire, said that changes including increases to National Insurance, the minimum wage, and the extension of hours entitlement were placing additional financial strain on the industry.
At present, children over nine monthsandunderthreeyearsold are entitled to 15 hours of government-funded childcare. From September, this entitlement will double to 30 hours, which is already available for three- and four-year-olds.
Mrs. Richards said the hourly rate provided by the government was far from covering the growing costsofrunningherbusiness, and the pressure had left her in tears. Wolds Childcare prides itself on offering a wide range of activities, but she believes the changes meant to make childcare more accessible could worsen the situation by underfunding the extrahours.
Currently, the hourly rates in Nottinghamshire are £5.47 for 3and 4-year-olds, £7.63 for twoyear-olds, and £10.38 for children undertwo.
Mrs. Richards explained: “Essentially the government funding is a contribution towards early years education because in the vast majority of cases it is not equitable to the real costs. The funding covers the cost of basic childcare, so a staffing level that meetsbasicgovernmentratioson minimum wage and basic books and craft materials. But it doesn't allow for the enhancements which most of us provide – such as highly qualified and experienced staff, music and dance classes, specialist language and art teachers and so on.Soactually, whatiscalled'free' childcare is actually just a subsidy.”
Mrs. Richards expressed concern that rather than providing more families with access to childcare, the funding shortfall could result in the closure of nurseries and the creationof"childcaredeserts." She said: “I have lost count of the hours, I would be lying if I didn’t say I had been in tears over it, it really is exhausting. Mentally – I can tell you this because I speak to lots of providers – their mental health is shot. We want to provide the best for our children and our families and the government is making us look like greedy rip off nurseries.”Sheadded:“Thisisnot workable and its not fair. It's not fair to providers, it's not fair to parents but ultimately it is children who are going to suffer sopleasereconsider.”
A Glastonbury nursery is urgently seeking support after its outdoor play area was severely damaged in a storm, leaving it unsafe and unusable. St Dunstan's Honeybees Playgroup, a well-established charitable nursery in the town, has launched a fundraising campaign after Storm Darragh caused significant damage to the outdoor space, disrupting the children’s ability to play and learn outdoors.
The nursery team has expressed that the damage is having a serious impact on their ability to provide a safe and enriching environment for outdoor play. They’ve turned to GoFundMe to raise the necessary funds for replacing broken equipment, repairing fencing, and ensuring the nursery continues to operate smoothly. So far, the fundraising efforts have been slow. The team acknowledges that many local families are also feeling financial pressures but are now reaching out to the broader community for assistance, whether through donations, materials, or skilled labour.
"EVERY CONTRIBUTION BIG OR SMALL WILL HELP US MAKE THE PLAY AREA SAFE AGAIN AND SUPPORT THE FUTURE OF THIS MUCH-
Those wishing to support the playgroup can donate at GoFundMe link. Local businesses or individuals who can offer practical support are also encouraged to get in touch
St Dunstan's Honeybees has long been a cornerstone of the local community, and staff are hopeful that, with the community’s help, the nursery will continue to thrive for many more years
"Outdoor learning is a vital part of our approach," said Laura Richards, from the nursery "It gives children the chance to explore, play, and build confidence Right now, they're missing out on those essential experiences."

Dolphin School continues to be a magical place for children to grow, learn and enjoy their education. I am amazed at the range of unique experiences our children enjoy throughout each academic year; boys and girls at Dolphin excel and make the most of every opportunity on offer, whether in the classroom, on the sports field, or one of our wonderful day or residential trips.
Our Dolphin Project Qualifications (DPQs) are a programme of bespoke learning opportunities, unique to the school, which run across Years 3-8 and offer the opportunity for children to explore a problem in more detail whilst developing competencies such as collaboration, independence, creativity and confidence. Alongside the completion of more traditional assessments, these projects are part of a 'multiple pathways to success' model, and have been designed to give our pupils the skills to prosper and succeed in the real world beyond school. They encourage our boys and girls to think deeply, to ask questions, and to articulate their findings cogently.
Our top two year groups have recently enjoyed their residential to Italy, a full week cramming in visits to Pompeii, the Colosseum, and even gladiator school! This is the pinnacle of our extensive trips programme, with all children from Year 3 upwards partaking in a residential (or two) each year to further their learning, but also their independence and resilience.
We are also pleased to announce a new event this year, Dolphin Arts Day, which will take place on Saturday 3 May. Dolphin School is Venue 25 for the Henley Arts Trail and we look forward to exhibiting our own artistic endeavours alongside those of some very talented professionals. All are welcome and we look forward to seeing many of you there!
