EARLY YEARS

Kate Middleton is continuing her mission to prioritize early childhood development not just within families, but also businesses and the financial community at large

The Princess of Wales held the first meeting of her new Business Taskforce for Early Childhood on Tuesday morning at NatWest bank's London headquarters, inviting some of Britain's biggest business and financial leaders to pitch them on the next stage of her initiative This latest development comes after the launch of her Shaping Us campaign in January, the goal of which is to take all of the scientific and academic endeavors in this field and turn them into “strategically important” ones The royal told those gathered that she hopes this Business Taskforce will be essential in helping her change the way society views and prioritizes young children and their environments

“It really does take a village,” the royal told some of Britain’s biggest business and financial leaders.

Famous faces share childhood photographs to back early-years campaign!

Famous faces have taken a trip down memory lane by sharing childhood photographs to help back a royal early-years campaign. It is part of the Shaping Us campaign led by the Princess of Wales, to raise awareness of the vital role our early years play in shaping the rest of our lives.

Kate sent a call out for people to talk about their early childhoods and “how they’ve shaped your lives”. Tottenham star Harry Kane, 29, who is sporting a striking pair of black and white striped shorts in his picture, wrote: “I’m only 5 in this pic, but look at the right foot ready to go!

“Our early childhood shapes the rest of our lives. From pregnancy to the age of five, the world

around us, the people we meet, and the experiences we have are all #ShapingUs.”

Chef Jamie Oliver, 47, who has become a household favourite after a series of TV shows and a campaign to improve school dinners, is beaming in his childhood photograph.

Former Saturdays singer Rochelle Humes is four in her photograph and smiling straight at the camera in a denim outfit. She joked: “I hear double denim is back..ahead of the curve…” and added “our early childhood shapes the rest of our lives.”

Nursery owner Mel Hart 'seriously concerned' by Government decision to extend free childcare policy

A nursery owner is "seriously concerned" about the future of early years care as the Government is set to extend its free childcare policy.

As part of the latest budget announcement, the Government plans to extend free childcare for working parents, so that by 2025 all eligible households in England with children under five will be entitled to 30 hours a week of free childcare following the end of the mother's maternity leave.

Mel said: "We as a sector are up-in-arms and seriously concerned about the future of early years care "We are already drastically underfunded for every child who accesses 'free' childcare. This varies, but on average we are underfunded by £2 50 per child per hour.

"A child who attends for 30 hours is costing the setting £75 a week, times this by 20 children attending (and most nurseries will have more than this) and nurseries are losing over £1,500 a week!

"So, it is not free, and the childcare sector has wanted this wording to be changed for many years I, along with many other nurseries, charge a higher rate for the non-funded children, so that we can balance out the costs and keep our settings open

SCHOOL DONATES £3,000 TO SUPPORT FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN IN HOSPITAL

A school has raised thousands of pounds for Ronald McDonald House Charities UK after being inspired by one parent’s skydive to fundraise for the charity.

Newbridge Pre-preparatory students took on a series of challenges after Anjna Mahey, from Perton, faced her fear of heights by jumping out of an aeroplane.

The Newbridge pupils decided to follow in Anjna’s footsteps by challenging themselves to do something outside their comfort zone too Their collective sponsorship amounted to £3,003.27. One Year 6 student, Zaaminah-Sky Equiano, even successfully challenged herself to walk 30,000 steps a day to support the fundraising

Anjna received support at Ronald McDonald House Birmingham when her five-year-old daughter Mia, a reception pupil at Newbridge, was diagnosed with leukaemia at seven months old.

For nine months the Ronald McDonald House became a ‘home away from home’ to Anjna and Mia’s dad, Simon, while Mia received life-saving treatment at nearby Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

“We were all very touched by the family’s story and wanted to contribute positively to the lives of others.”

WE TAKE A LOOK AT HARVARD UNIVERSITIES FINDINGS ON RESILIENCE IN CHILDREN

Reducing the effects of significant adversity on children’s healthy development is essential to the progress and prosperity of any society Science tells us that some children develop resilience, or the ability to overcome serious hardship, while others do not. Understanding why some children do well despite adverse early experiences is crucial, because it can inform more effective policies and programs that help more children reach their full potential

One way to understand the development of resilience is to visualize a balance scale or seesaw Protective experiences and coping skills on one side counterbalance significant adversity on the other Resilience is evident when a child’s health and development tips toward positive outcomes even when a heavy load of factors is stacked on the negative outcome side

"The single most common factor for children who develop resilience is at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive parent, caregiver, or other adult."

These relationships provide the personalized responsiveness, scaffolding, and protection that buffer children from developmental disruption. They also build key capacities such as the ability to plan, monitor, and regulate behavior

that enable children to respond adaptively to adversity and thrive This combination of supportive relationships, adaptive skill-building, and positive experiences is the foundation of resilience.

Children who do well in the face of serious hardship typically have a biological resistance to adversity and strong relationships with the important adults in their family and community. Resilience is the result of a combination of protective factors Neither individual characteristics nor social environments alone are likely to ensure positive outcomes for children who experience prolonged periods of toxic stress It is the interaction between biology and enrionment that builds a child’s ability to cope with adversity and overcome threats to healthy development.

Research has identified a common set of factors that predispose children to positive outcomes in the face of significant adversity Individuals who demonstrate resilience in response to one form of adversity may not necessarily do so in response to another

Yet when these positive influences are operating effectively, they “stack the scale” with positive weight and optimize resilience across multiple contexts These counterbalancing factors include -

facilitating supportive adult-child relationships; building a sense of self-efficacy and perceived control;

providing opportunities to strengthen adaptive skills and self-regulatory capacities; and mobilizing sources of faith, hope, and cultural traditions.
