Medieval Music in the Dales 2021 The events of 2020 forced the cancellation of the annual Medieval Music in the Dales festival at Bolton Castle in Yorkshire. The upside was that the festival went online, and has now held two very successful online events. For all that, everyone at MMitD is delighted to be back ‘in real life’ at Bolton Castle this September. And, as usual, the September festival features a heady mix of performance, learning and informal medieval musical fun - albeit with a range of COVID-19-aware precautions and safety measures.

Our concert performers this year are • Woodwose: a trecento programme Per Quella Strada Lactea • Trouvere: A Dance in Naples – music from the Chansonnier du Roi • Gaita: Days of the Decameron • Amyas: Delirium – the Darker Side of Dancing New this year is the Summer School. Following on from very popular Study Days over the last few years, Medieval Music in the Dales is now offering a three-day course in the days leading up to the festival. This year, the theme is ‘Playing Medievally’. Aimed at singers and instrumentalists who are comfortable in their voice or other instrument, the Summer School will hone their medieval sound with an understanding of context and performance practice. And lots of playing!

We thank all those who have supported us throughout the past year, not least the Early Music Shop, whose support has been invaluable over the past year. We look forward to new friends who discovered us online in 2020 joining us in our live feast of opportunities, alongside all our regular returners ‐

We are very pleased to announce that HISS 2021 will go ahead as planned at Bishop Burton College. Having can‐ vassed the overwhelming support of our regular attenders and ensured our venue is fully COVID secure, we are confi‐ dent almost all the elements that make up our uniquely friendly and encouraging summer school will be in place.

This will be our delayed 10th anniversary year of enjoyable and spontaneous music making!

It’s a big anniversary year for Josquin, one of the most important and internationally famous composers of the Renaissance. His sacred and secular vocal music will be a treat for all singers, especially tenors and basses, but also for instruments. There will be Bach for recorders and Vivaldi for strings and more tunes from the Celtic harper Turlogh O’Carolan. String players will also discover the music of Bononcini, rival to Handel in 1720s London, and how to play dances such as minuets, gigues and gavottes stylishly!

We announced the addition of William Lyons to the team of inspirational tutors last year, before we had to cancel, so this is a special invitation to capped wind, double reeds, and also to cornetts and sackbuts. Our usual tutors including Jacob Heringman, Susanna Pell, Stewart Hardy, Mary Tyers and Vivien Ellis will offer their usual genial and knowledgeable insight into collaborative repertoire for lutes, viols, fiddle, recorders and voice. Also returning are Rebecca Austen‐ Brown (recorder) and Richard Thomas (cornett) and George Bartle (sackbut).

Full time students are again offered generous Bursaries, sup‐ ported by the North East Early Music Forum. Three of our recent Bursary students have graduated to more permanent status. Eleanor Carr and Catherine Harris have taken on administrative roles, and more technical delivery associated with our Historically Informed Summer School Youtube chan‐ nel. Our Cambridge organ scholar Caius Lee has also taken on a larger role in the choral course within HISS, which we hope to see develop into a stronger element of the course.

EMS at Snape Maltings Early Music Shop Opens New Shop at Snape Maltings

On 5 December 2020, The Early Music Shop opened its new doors at Snape Maltings, and it reopens again on Monday 12 April, subject to lifting of government restrictions.

The new shop complements an existing retail space at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Salt’s Mill, in West Yorkshire, as well as an established and leading website, earlymusicshop.com. Sitting at the heart of Snape Maltings, the shop will be open seven days a week, with extended opening hours at busy times and for some concerts and events.

New Zen‐on Recorders These new wooden recorders are designed after originals by Bressan by Japanese maker Takeyama and produced by Zen-on. They possess a rich sound with lots of overtones and are very responsive.

Hiroyuki Takeyama studied recorder making with Friedrich von Huene in the late 1970s and developed his first Bressan model alto recorder in 1981. he Moeck/Society of Recorder Players International Solo Recorder Competition is one of the major platforms for recorder players aspiring to a career as a soloist. Established in 1985, the competition has provided many recorder players with the opportunity of performing in public in front of a panel of internationally renowned recorder adjudicators. Many of the finalists and winners are now recognised as distinguished solo and chamber musicians with their CD recordings, masterclasses and teaching skills being highly respected.

Beverley & East Riding Early Music Festival Friday 28 – Sunday 30 May 2021

Leeds Baroque embrace the digital world with the support of EMS and a cookery book!

Like all other musical organisations Leeds Baroque has been hard-hit by the ramifications of the Covid-19 crisis. They lost all but one of their 20th Anniversary concerts in 2020 and live performance is still not possible. However, thanks to support of EMS and other funders they now have the opportunity to embrace the digital age with their first streamed performance.

Working in collaboration with the technical team in the School of Music at Leeds University and filmed in the elegant surroundings of the University’s Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall the recording is scheduled for release in mid-July The programme, A portrait of Henry Purcell has been designed by their Musical Director Peter Holman for a small choir and orchestra to accommodate any social distancing rules in place at time of filming. Thanks to the financial assistance of EMS and others to ensure the widest possible audience the programme will be made freely available (but with an option to donate!). Orchestral Administrator, Jillian Johnson said: We are hugely grateful to EMS for their support. Seeking funding in the midst of this crisis is a big ask so we have resorted to slightly unorthodox funding methods with our wonderful Baroque Cook Book (still available via our website www.leedsbaroque.org) Leeds Baroque’s A portrait of Henry Purcell is supported by The Early Music Shop, Leeds Inspired, Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society, the Friends of Leeds Baroque and several individual donors.

Food historian Eileen White has compiled this enticing selection of 17th century recipes to enable the reader to devise their own 17th century feast. It features recipes from original 17th century cookery books (many held in the University of Leeds Brotherton Library Special Collections) with a selection adapted to modern culinary practice.

The cooks quoted include Hannah Wolley (1670), John Evelyn (1650), John Parkinson (1629) Elizabeth Cromwell - wife of Oliver Cromwell (1664) and Robert May (1660/1685) and provide a fascinating glimpse of the domestic life of the time. A glossary of archaic terms, list of sources, a links to digital resources all provide scope for the reader’s further exploration of this fascinating topic. All proceeds of the sale go to help fund an exciting concert recording project scheduled for Summer 2021 to fill the void until the audience can return safely.

The Beverley & East Riding Early Music Festival was established in 1988 in order to bring residents and visitors together to enjoy an annual festival of concerts, lectures and creative learning opportunities – designed to highlight our shared traditions of music and history – celebrating some of the UK’s finest medieval churches.

The 2021 Festival reveals the music, and lives, of the people of the East Riding who followed the early pilgrims to the New World some 400 years ago.

Guest artists include Stile Antico presenting their programme of the music based around those who undertook that momentous journey on the Mayflower; La Serenissima led by violinist Adrian Chandler and songstress Vivien Ellis returning with her very particular exposition of the music locked away in the roof timbers of St Mary’s Church, Beverley.

Concerts will be available online and some concerts will take place in venues following social distancing guidelines.

York Early Music Festival Monday 12 – Friday 16 July 2021 Encounters The 2021 festival will be shorter than usual, and concerts will be focused around just two of York’s historic venues - St Margaret’s Church, the home of the National Centre for Early Music and the recently restored Victorian church of St Lawrence housing the largest collection of 20th century stained glass in the city. Guest artists scheduled include: violinist Rachel Podger; The Society of Strange & Ancient Instruments; the Monteverdi String Band; Stile Antico; lutenist Jacob Heringman; bass Matthew Brook performing alongside Peter Seymour; Ensemble Clement Janequin; and EEEmerging ensembles La Vaghezza and L’Apothéose.

Concerts will be presented in a covid secure environment and will be recorded for future broadcast online.

Online Recorder Day at Wells Cathedral School

Queen Victoria’s Consort Bringing the power of music to care homes and hospitals Queen Victoria's Consort is made up of some of the country’s leading early brass musicians and directed by Andy Kershaw (a free lance Tubist with many orchestras and early brass expert for film scores and period instrument orchestras) The ensemble brings to life a stunning collection of museum quality original 19th Century brass instruments including a set of seven brass instruments by Adolphe Sax. The group has unique arrangements of music of the time period, and performs dressed in Victorian Sunday best.

To date QVC has performed at The London Transport Museum, Steam on the District Line, Buckingham Palace, Burgh House, Cambridge University and Alexandra Palace.

We have been featured at events reported in the Telegraph newspaper and on both BBC and ITV London news.

The musicians can create programmes around a theme, use composers and traditional music correct to the era, introduce audiences to rare museum quality instruments that then come to life with gentle sonorous sounds and can even entertain younger audience members with our interactive 'kitchen band' (a popular parlor game of the period making music with genuine Victorian kitchen utensils) So far the ensemble has collaborated with historical companies such as English Heritage, Lincoln Castle and we have worked with the Acting Company ‘Time Will Tell’ and Globe actor Dickon Tyrrell. Christmas 2020 saw QVC record a bespoke narrated version of ‘A Christmas Carol’ for Girton College, Cambridge and also some Virtual Victorian Christmas cards, after all the Victorians introduced many of our Christmas traditions.

Queen Victoria’s consort currently have a ‘Go fund me’ campaign running and have recorded a concert to give virtually to care homes and those who may be isolated or lonely because of Covid. £2,500 is our target for donations towards this fantastic concert that has been filmed and edited, to be shared and watched in an infinite number of care environments and people’s homes. This concert can be watched on television or tablet and also friends can join via Zoom.

We welcome participants from all abilities and ages. Tabea Debus (who is the main teacher at Wells) and Anna Stegman will offer a colourful mix of activities throughout the day including workshops (on topics such as technique/warm-up, standard repertoire, contemporary playing techniques...), 1:1 lessons, a masterclass, lunchtime concert and end-of-day sharing event and quiz.

Hoorah! Real Roots! is happening this June!

PIVA:- David Jarratt-Knock, Eric Moulder, Mary Mohan, Kate Moran, Jane Moulder & Jude Rees, will be at Halsway Manor, for a weekend of early music on the 1820 June.

Discover the world of late 16th century popular traditional music as heard in both court and country, in this enjoyable and fascinating course! The focus of the course will be playing 4 or 5 part harmony in small groups but it doesn’t matter if you are new to this music or an experienced renaissance specialist; sessions will be adapted to suit all levels although you should be competent on your instruments and have a reasonable sight reading ability.

Featured Maker ‐ George Stevens George Stevens is an English maker of fine quality hand-crafted early musical instruments of the medieval, renaissance and baroque periods. George has been making lutes, harps and other plucked instruments since 1989 when he enrolled at the London College of Furniture. By the summer of 1994 he had successfully completed five years of instrument making, study and research into the subject and attained a BSc. Hons.

Since leaving LCF he has continued instrument making to the high standard demanded by professional musicians and serious amateurs alike. After some time spent in the West Country he set up a permanent workshop in Kent in 1998, where he has created in excess of 250 instruments and sold worldwide. Though he has also made classical guitars and members of the mandolin family, early instrument making is still very much his specialist area for which he is well known.

At the Early Music Shop we are proud to represent his work, all of the featured instruments on this page are available to view or order.

Previously Owned Hurdy-Gurdy after Saunier by Chris Eaton A rare opportunity to purchase a left-handed Hurdy-Gurdy after Saunier by renowned UK maker Chris Eaton. This instrument is the only left-handed instrument made by Eaton.

It is a previously owned instrument in excellent condition, made by "one of the best hurdy-gurdy builders in England"*.

This hurdy gurdy was originally made for Doreen Muskett, an authority on the instrument! Eaton's guitar bodied HurdyGurdy is based on originals by Edmond Saunier (17301783). These instruments are very suitable for playing 18th century music, either solo or in a small ensemble.

On Approval At the Early Music Shop we know how important it is to have the option of trying out instruments before you buy them. During these challenging times our ‘On Approval’ scheme has become a very important and valued part of the service we offer. The scheme allows you to try out up to three instruments at home, so you can compare them and make sure that you are choosing the right one for you! The benefits of the approval service are numerous: You can try the instruments in a familiar setting, make a comfortable decision, play them perhaps during an online lesson and seek your teachers advice.

Recorder Repairs Recorders last for a long time when properly looked after, however they do require regular servicing. It is always advisable to get any problem or fault seen to as soon as possible and have any necessary repairs or alterations made. Many of these problems are relatively simple to sort out, such as cork breaking or wearing of the thumb hole. Some problems are more severe, such as cracking, and these require lengthier repairs. It is always worth seeking advice before despairing that the recorder is irreparable.

Our recorder technician, Barry Holder is based at Saltaire.

He was trained at Moeck in Celle and has over 30 years' experience. His workshop is equipped to repair all makes of recorders, from student instruments to hand made copies, and all sizes from garklein to sub bass.
