R EGI S T RY R E V IE W Spring always seems like a natural time to contemplate the year ahead and what it might bring. Many of us will spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about our cars and our related Porsche hobbies. What projects will be completed, what maintenance needs to be addressed, which events we will attend? Perhaps we will also ponder the state of the market as we plan acquisitions and sales. Many have commented on what has been described as a “softening” of the current market. Cars don’t seem to be selling as quickly and may not be commanding the same prices as realized just a year or two ago. However, auction watchers have been quick to point out that the best examples on offer still bring strong money and that Porsches remain well represented by the auction houses. It seems logical that the current slowdown is the anticipated market correction that many have been predicting. Maybe those that jumped into the hot Porsche market for a quick buck are starting to move on or maybe it’s just the changing economy. Only time will tell. One thing is certain, enthusiasm for our hobby and the Porsche brand is as strong as ever. Just look no further than the recent shows and open houses in Southern California. The core of this Porsche season kick-off has always been the back-to-back Toy and

Literature Show on Saturday and the Phoenix Club Swap Meet on Sunday. These longstanding annual events remain well regarded and attended while the supporting open houses beginning on the Thursday before continue to evolve and impress. An unofficial count of nearly 20 dealers, restorers, retailers, and shops opened their doors and welcomed enthusiasts from around the world. The Stoddard-organized bus tours once again proved popular for those visiting the area as they shuttled enthusiasts all over Southern California. Just a few of the highlights included Fallbrook’s CPR with a range of cars in various stages of restoration, 912s aplenty at Benton Performance, Sierra Madre Collection’s Autofest, Callas Rennsport with a 959 on the lift, the impressive 356s on display at Willhoit, and Rod Emory’s incredible outlaw shop. We call our Southern California weekend the “kickoff,” but the same passion was evident on the

East Coast in early February. The outlaw and hotrod trend was on full display for the South Florida event known as DRT. The 3-day show was bigger than ever with over 10,000 attendees. The recently concluded Werks Reunion, Amelia Island, and associated auctions brought out an ever-impressive lineup. Spring has proven an exciting time for The Registry as well. Club merchandise sold well at the above events and membership is up 20 percent since the beginning of the year. Early S calendars are the current hot item and at just $15 each we hope to sell out soon. (Hint: Order now!) In other exciting news, we plan to bring you four issues of ESSES this year (up from just three in 2018). More great features, tech articles, and show reports will be coming your way. Looking forward, the buzz is naturally about Luftgekuhlt 6 (May 11) but there will be dozens of other must-attend events. Hershey in the East (April 20), Festival of Speed in the West, the annual PCA Parade, and all of the club and regional events in between. Get out and take part in the fun and we will see you at the shows. Jorge Perez Early 911S Registry

MARCH 2019 SPRING

THURSDAY The

CALIFORNIA

PORSCHE Weekend...

Once again, another fun-filled Los Angeles Porsche-centric weekend has flown by without a hitch. Anchored by the Los Angeles Literature and Toy Show on Saturday and the Phoenix Club Swap Meet on Sunday, the area open houses are becoming bigger and better every year. This year at Sierra Madre Collection’s 2019 Autofest Open House we were celebrating our first year at 1669 Colorado Blvd, Eagle Rock, California 90041, where we have combined our Showroom, Warehouse and Offices into one location with over 15,000 square feet. Taking advantage of our beautiful neighborhood setting we were able to throw the biggest Open House/Block Party yet entertaining over 1,300 friends and neighbors! With cooperation from the City of Los Angeles we closed off two blocks of the picturesque Mt.

Royal Drive with plenty of room to showcase visiting Porsches. From early 356s to 914s, 924s, 928s and every generation of 911, there was truly something for everyone. Guests enjoyed offerings from local restaurants and a beer on us from a local brewery, served in an SMC commemorative glass to boot! Check out the video coverage of the 2019 SMC Autofest on our Instagram and Facebook pages. Sierra Madre also offered a 10 percent open house discount applied to all orders placed on the premises. This open house/block party is not to be missed in 2020. See you there.

SATURDAY

On Saturday, March 2, Bruce Schwartz of Stoddard NLA once again hosted the “Lit Meet” at the Airport Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. This was the 36th year of this great annual event, and one at which the Early 911S Registry has had a presence for many of those years. Our club’s tables were set up at our usual spot right at the left entrance of the main hall. Our tables were staffed by Michael Hammond, Chuck Miller and Eric Williams. On Sunday, March 3, the 356 Club hosted the annual So Cal AllPorsche Swap and Car Display at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim, California. Since this event began, the Early 911S Registry has been there with our two EZ-UPs selling our club’s merchandise, renewing and taking new memberships, trying to answer as many questions as we can, and of course greeting our old friends and making new ones. Thanks to Peter McNulty and Trevor Gates for their event organizing, thanks to Jorge Perez for his Sierra Madre Collection help, and thanks to Michael Hammond, Chuck Miller, Eric Williams and Christina Perez for staffing the Early 911S Registry booth. www.thephoenixclub.com
