Hello and welcome to a brand new issue of the Echo and we’ve had a bit of a facelift. We felt it was time to freshen

We like you to involve the community as much as

possible and to that end we would like to invite budding photographers to submit images for the covers of future

issues. We publish quarterly in February, May, August and November, so why not make them seasonal.

Our cover story this month is the restoration of the

Chapel Pond which should help to preserve it for many years to come. Also in this issue we have an update on Finbar the guide dog, some timely and useful advice

from Trading Standards. The latest in our Group Spotlight series profiles Over 60s and the Day Centre and there’s Jubilee celebration pics along with all the weekend’s competitions and raffle winners.

If you’re off to university or college this autumn then

why not apply for some much needed help with funding for books from Skeele’s Charity. The form is on page 19 along with all you need to know about its submission.

Taken to the palace, put in the barn and given a load of straw and a spinning wheel. She has to spin the straw into gold by morning. All seems lost. Then along comes… rumplestiltskin.

Neil runs the Olympic torch for Britain and earith Our fantastic Neil Adams ran with the Olympic Torch in Cambridge on Saturday 7th July.

Neil, 26, from Earith has Downs Syndrome and embraces life in a big way. He

became a martial arts champion and won gold in the World Championships. He

is a great ambassador for people with disabilities, and acts and sings in the village

pantomime. Talking about his run Neil said “It was magnificent and a great honour, I will never forget it.”

Farewell To Finbar Saying goodbye to your baby is always really upsetting. During the course of their lives you meet many people who follow their progress. As you walk round the

supermarket, people often call out “How is he doing today? Is he behaving himself?”.

A walk down the High Street brings acknowledgments from all and sundry. The trick is to keep smiling and keep walking, whilst talking.

Then we have to say goodbye to his puppy friends. This entails a free run and

breakfast or lunch at the garden centre. One garden centre is having a sign made

– ‘do not disturb, puppies in training’ – after one disastrous breakfast meeting. My family and friends will all be sorry to see him go, especially the children.

This beautiful little boy had a terrible start in life with constant diarrhoea and

crying in the night. I was originally advised that he had an immature gut but he was later diagnosed with coccidia. Treatment wasn’t successful, however, and further

samples revealed that he also had campylobacter. He was on medication for three

months and was finally given the all clear when he was seven months old. As a result we could not do our usual training. We did, however, do schools, which he loved.

This was obviously his forte; he adores children and all the fuss and attention he gets from them. I hope to carry on with this especially the remedial reading.

Farewell To Finbar II Yesterday, Lynne brought Finn for a free run with Snoopy, Willow and BeckyBoo. As potential guide dogs, they

were very good at guiding us straight to The Woodman pub, even though

we begged them not to! Would we lie?

We then sadly realised that this would

probably be Finn and Snoopy’s farewell

fee run together before going on to big school. They had a great time, especially when they discovered a dead tree trunk to play with. Being well trained guide dog pups they knew they were not allowed to play with little ‘sissy’ sticks, so they chose to show off their macho prowess with the biggest and heaviest branch they could find.

They’re certainly a pair of characters and will be missed by us all. Tears of

sadness when they go, followed by the anguish of wondering whether they’ll make the grade. Finally, tears of joy if they make it through to being fully

fledged Guide Dogs. We must be mad putting ourselves through this continual emotional roller coaster.

Lynne will be joining Willow Ruth, Daisy Ruth and myself in Cromer for a

few days after Finn goes so we’ll drown our emotional sorrows and drink to his success – Hic!!

To expand its list of members Trading Standards is undertaking a

recruitment drive. If you are, or know of, a reliable trader in Cambridgeshire it wants to hear from you.

Beware, sharks!

If you are having financial difficulties or wish to borrow money quickly, it may be

tempting to borrow money from illegal money lenders, known as ‘loan sharks’, who lend cash no questions asked. However, Trading Standards urge you to avoid such lenders and assure you that there are safe, reliable options available to you.

Although they may seem friendly and helpful, loan sharks charge huge rates

money somehow. It is believed that around 310,000 households in the UK currently owe money to illegal lenders.

Luckily there are safe places you can borrow money from, even if you have

financial difficulties. These lenders stick to the law, make it clear from the start the total amount you will need to repay and collect your repayments in a lawful way.

The England Illegal Money Lending Team was set up because of the misery and

fear that loan sharks cause. Cambridgeshire County Council are working with this

team and local district councils, to tackle loan sharks in the county, raise awareness of them and to support their victims.

Group spotlight In the last edition of the Echo we shone the spotlight on two local groups attended by some of the youngest members of the village in our bid to focus on what’s good about our community. Those groups were Earith Baby and Toddler Group and Earith Pre-school 7.

In a bid to feature other activities and groups that support the community right across the age range, we

turn the spotlight on some of the more mature members of the local community who attend the Over 60s Club and the Day Centre.

Jubilations The rain did not dampen the spirits of all those who took part in the Jubilee celebrations, as you can see from the photographs which speak for themselves.

So many people donated their time and energy

and the village embraced it all by entering all the

competitions for which there were prizes of rosettes and medals. The recreation ground looked great

with flags and bunting everywhere. The ladies of

the WI did a splendid job in the wonderful, newly renovated, pavilion.

So many donations were given for the event,

too numerous to mention them all, but here are just a few:

Chapel Pond restoration Earith Parish Council was recently successful in getting awards for all Lottery grant funding to restore the

village pond. There are fewer and fewer ponds being maintained in villages nowadays and Chapel Pond is

a popular destination for old and young alike, not just from our village but surrounding villages too.

Strange though it may seem, the pond was

struggling to survive successfully as it was constantly drying up during the summer, making it unpleasant

to look at and not very comfortable for the ducks. Ron

Hodge, the parish councillor who looks after the pond on our behalf, had identified the problem as years of silt building up. Tony and Robert from the company

AES Europe, who were eventually contracted to carry

out the work, came out to assess the problem. AES is a

partnership of freshwater environment experts who have experience in working on lakes, large ponds, reservoirs,

rivers, canals and aquatic ecosystems. They came up with a plan to restore the pond and put in measures which would reduce problems in the future. De-silting work,

creating new banks, installing a new reed bed to reduce the amount of silt building up, setting up a new wide

grass bank on which the ducks could be fed in the future and replanting would be undertaken.

Work started at the beginning of May, much sooner

than anticipated, as the contractors had a two week

window available. Notices went up, the park was closed and the ducks moved into a pen at the back of the

pond. The pond was first drained, not easy in the rain,

and a digger manoeuvred in to dredge out the silt. As

you can imagine, this created a really revolting, sludgy

working environment for the men but they didn’t seem
