It’s a way of doing business that comes naturally for her. “I have always been a very driven person who is drawn to people,” she says. “Every job I have ever had has been service-oriented.”

This includes working in the hospitality industry for many years. Nancy earned a bachelor’s degree with a specialty in hospitality management from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Before she became a Realtor®, Nancy managed sales and catering for a hotel company.

Real estate, though, has been a part of her life for much longer than the past decade. Nancy obtained her real estate license in 1997 and started out processing loans for her husband, a mortgage consultant. “I did that for a couple of years and then realized we had many past clients who were interested in buying or selling real estate and I knew I could give them the service they deserved,” she recalls.

“I started selling real estate in 1999 with Avalon Real Estate Services and then joined Century 21 Award in 2004 and have been here ever since.”

One of the advantages of working in real estate, she says, is the open-ended potential for success and the ability to have more control of your professional future. “I have always been an extremely hard worker. I worked a lot of very long hours when I was working at hotels,” she recalls. “One of the things I love most about being a Realtor® is that you are responsible for your own destiny and your success knows no limits!”

Nancy says her experience in the lending side of the industry gave her a thorough knowledge of the different components that go into a real estate transaction when she started out as a Realtor®. This reduced her learning curve and allowed Nancy to hit the ground running. “I also had a rather large sphere of influence,” she says. “That, along with my tremendous work ethic, allowed me to find success right away. Every year just gets better and better.”

Another advantage to working with Nancy is her focus on a specific area -- University City/UTC. To demonstrate this, she shares an example of a time when she had a listing that appraised significantly below the escrow

price. Because she knows the area and its homes so well, Nancy says she was able to sit with the buyer’s agent and the buyer and go through every comparable sale. “After demonstrating my expertise in the area, I was able to help my seller stick to the contracted price rather than drop his price,” she says. “I pride myself on pricing homes correctly.”

Her clients aren’t the only ones who recognize Nancy’s superior ability as a Realtor®. Nancy is also involved in professional and civic organizations to help her community move forward. These include serving for six years now on the executive board of the EdUCate!

foundation, which provides financial support to all five public schools in University City. She’s also involved with EdUCate! Math Academy, a program that was established to help students become more successful in math, and she serves on the board of the University City Cluster.

When she’s not working, Nancy takes advantage of Southern California’s abundant outdoor activities. She loves to go hiking, paddle-boarding, kayaking, waterskiing and wakeboarding, and spending time with family and friends. Her biggest inspiration comes from her deep desire to succeed for her family -- her husband and three sons. “Finding balance is one of the most challenging things about this business,” she explains of her work-life demands. “There is that constant feeling that you must keep going and can’t relax. I think I am getting better about that and am really trying to make time for things I enjoy.”

For new agents, Nancy advises that they realize that real estate is not an easy business. “The actual work may not be brain surgery, but you need to know where your business is going to come from,” she says. “So often I will see new agents start something and if they don’t see immediate results, they jump to something else. This business takes consistency and perseverance; it’s not for the weak at heart, but,” she adds, “it’s one of the most rewarding businesses you can do.”
