3 Steps to Reaching Every Goal

H

aving goals in our lives is important. For some, merely creating goals brings about a positive change.

When you make a goal, you are creating an exciting challenge for yourself. To make sure you meet that challenge with the right tools, you will need to do three things.

1. WRITE IT DOWN The first step is to write your goal down on paper. This may seem like a simple step, but it makes your goal visible and tangible. Get out a clean sheet of paper, and write your goal down in clear words.

It doesn’t have to be a big dream for it to be useful. Any goal you have should be written down. It should also be somewhere you will look often, or pass by during the day.

2. BREAK IT DOWN You may have a goal of losing weight. This alone seems like a difficult thing to do. But when we break this goal down into its different parts, these smaller goals become easier to handle. Losing 10 lbs. seems overwhelming, but losing 1 lb. a month for ten months is something you can definately do.

3. REMIND YOURSELF With so many things to do during your busy day, your goals can sometimes be put aside. Write yourself a reminder, and place it where it will be seen often. Your fridge, bathroom mirror, or desk are just a few of the places where you could post your goal.

With these three steps, reaching your goals will be much easier. You want to be happy, and you deserve it.

hroughout Orange County’s Gold Coast, you see homes that bear the unique stamp of Burkhart Brothers Construction. To Bryan and Mark Burkhart, these are not just homes, they are monuments to the Burkhart name and a legacy of quality work built on trust, integrity, commitment and excellence.

“Mark and I think about this a lot,” says Bryan. “Our father was a guy who came from a small town in West Virginia. He had two kids, worked at Boeing full time and went to college at night. We didn’t grow up with cleaning ladies, gardeners or contractors — those are the jobs we did growing up.”

Both Bryan and Mark are graduates of USC’s prestigious Marshall School of Business and worked their way through college. From there, the brothers each went

on to successful careers in their chosen fields. After his military service, Bryan ran a wine import and distribution company, where he supplied the finest restaurants and sommeliers in the country. Mark’s expertise in tech, IT and accounting took him to Hong Kong, where he acquired invaluable insights into international trade.

Over time, the two began building and selling spec homes together, and when the market crashed in 2008, they began doing projects for other people in order to keep their crew working. “That’s when the company started to expand from an investment vehicle to a contracting business,” Bryan explains.

Bryan and Mark bring their expertise from past enterprises to Burkhart Brothers Construction, skills that make it possible to turn each client’s vision into a reality. Two junior partners add their skills to the mix with extensive experience in building and accounting.

The company focuses on three niche markets in coastal Orange County: high-end custom homes; spec homes for other developers; and major remodels. Bryan emphasizes that no project is too challenging, be it in a cramped space, on the sand, water or cliffs. “We’ll work anywhere if the project is meaningful enough. The challenge is what makes it fun.”

The brothers agree that one of their most defining assets is their people. Their team of 30+ professionals includes long-term employees who have been with the company from the start, former military personnel and seasoned superintendents. Inside the familial culture, people of varied ages and skills work together and learn from one another while cooperating to reach client objectives. “Our clients have a superintendent working with them through the entire project, and whether they are building or remodeling a home, they also have a project manager,” Mark says. “This person is their go-to for everything from picking out tile to making sure the project comes in on budget.”

“We provide a whole team,” Bryan adds. “The superintendent has the knowledge to build the home right, the project manager has the patience and attention to detail to make sure the client’s expectations are met or exceeded at the end of the project.”

The company’s relationships with its subcontractors are also critical. Bryan continues, “Without them showing up every day, we could not do what we do. We use primarily small family companies who have their name on the line as well. But we have enough guys in house that if we have to self perform to keep the ball rolling, we can do it.

There are always issues after the job is done, and we have the ability to service them. One employees whole job is to run warranty.”

Next, they oversee subcontractors and keep each project on schedule and on budget. Once the vision is complete, the team executes a final punch list and ensures that everything meets with the client’s approval. With this winning formula, the company has grown year over year, and today is recognized among the top 10 percent of contractors in the area.

Character Development How to be a Class Act

F

rom time to time someone gives another individual the ultimate compliment by saying, “You are a ‘class act,’” or by describing a specific behavior by saying, “That’s class.” From time to time a master of ceremonies will introduce an individual by saying, “If you go to the dictionary and look up the word ‘class,’ you will see a picture of your speaker this evening.”

A person with class is an individual of integrity, someone you would love to have as a parent or child, a friend or a neighbor, a mentor or an advisor.

In short, class identifies a person who is “top drawer,” one who goes the extra mile by being gracious to everyone who courteously serves them.

I love the description given in comments made by Bill Daniels who said that “class is something you choose for yourself. It’s competing honestly, confronting problems head-on, taking accolades with grace and humility and not knocking your competitors. If you have class you’re loyal to both yourself and to those around you. Class is born out of self-

respect and a healthy respect for others. Everything in this world is not always attainable. Fortunately, class is.”

Class is the coach who gives every child on the team his turn “at bat” without regard to the youngster’s ability or the won-lost record of the team.

I encourage you to identify someone who is a class act and use that person as a role model. The individual might not be rich and famous or even brilliant, but a person of class is one we can all aspire to be.

Alex and Leo grew up in Westminster, where they were neighbors and schoolmates until the 8th grade, when each of their families lost their homes due to bad real estate advice where one family couldn’t sell quickly enough and lost their home to foreclosure and the other was convinced to sell when there wasn’t a need to. The events that ensued in each of their lives were destabilizing to their families, as

they were forced to live in cramped conditions while struggling to regain their financial footing. These circumstances were also a catalyst for their future success.

A talented high school athlete, Alex never shied from competition. From an early age, he was eager to succeed, and he began reading books about personal development, real estate and investing. Once he obtained his real estate license, he achieved Rookie of the Year. “I was ready to grab life by the horns,” he says. “One of the biggest motivators for me back then, and still is, is my parents. They sacrificed a lot for me, my brother and sisters. From the time I got into real estate, my number one motivator was to give them a better life and purchase them a house. I set the goal to do that in two years, and I have been able to accomplish it.”

Leo stepped into an adult role as a teenager, when his father became ill, and he had to take a job to help care for his dad and three brothers. The family moved to Kansas, where Leo eventually became a 911 dispatcher.

He also started a small business on the side. “It was the first time I realized I could make money outside my hourly job,” Leo recalls. “It inspired me to something

more. At the same time, I saw how Alex was developing and that he was on the right track. I was proud of him.

Then I came to visit him about a month into his business.

He said, ‘Why don’t you move home and do this with me?’ I was inspired. I went back to Kansas and started putting things into motion. I left my stable job and got to work.”

The Top Six Ways to Stay Motivated

I

receive many emails from people that basically ask the same question: How can I keep myself motivated long term? This seems to be quite a common dilemma for many people so I want to address it because it can be done!

Here are my tips for staying motivated:

1. Get Motivated Every Day. Zig Ziglar was once confronted about being a “motivational speaker.” The guy said to him, “You guys come and get people hyped up and then you leave and the motivation goes away. It doesn’t last, and then you have to get motivated again.”

Zig reminded the gentleman that baths are the same way but we think it is a good idea to take a bath every day! It is true that motivation doesn’t last.

We have to renew it each and every day. That is okay. It doesn’t make motivation a bad thing. We simply have to realize that if we want to stay motivated over the long term, it is something we will have to apply to ourselves each and every day.

2. Have a Vision for Your Life.

The root word of motivation is “motive.” The definition of motive is, “A reason to act.” This is the cognitive or rational side of motivation. It is your vision. You have to have a vision that is big enough to motivate you.

If you are making $50,000 a year, it isn’t going to motivate you to set your goal at $52,000 a year. You just won’t get motivated for that because the reward isn’t enough.

Maybe $70,000 a year would work for you. Set out a vision and a strategy for getting there. Have a plan and work the plan.

3. Fuel Your Passion.

Much of motivation is emotional. I don’t know quite how it works but I do know THAT it works. Emotion is a powerful force in getting us going. Passion is an emotion, so fuel your passion. “Well, I like to work on logic,” you may say. Great, now work on your passion. 4. Work Hard Enough to Get Results.

You can build on your motivation by getting results. The harder you work, the more results you will get and the more 24

results you get, the more you will be motivated to get more.

These things all build on one another.

If you want to lose weight, then lose the first few pounds.

When the belt moves to the next notch you will get fired up to get it to the notch beyond that!

5. Put Good Materials into Your Mind.

I can’t say this enough – listen to audios. I still listen to audios regularly. I buy audio clubs from other speakers and I learn and grow. Their successes motivate me to get my own successes!

Read good books. Read books that teach you new ideas and skills. Read books that tell the stories of successful people. Buy them, read them, and get motivated! Buy great music and listen to it. I just did a spinning class at the club today. Whenever a good song came on I was actually able to get motivated to ride faster! It gets you going and motivates you!

6. Ride the Momentum when It Comes.

Sometimes you will just be clicking and sometimes you won’t. That is okay. It is the cycle of life. When you aren’t clicking, plug away.

When you are clicking, pour it on because momentum will help you get larger gains in a shorter period of time with less energy. That is the momentum Equation! When you are feeling good about how your work is going, ride the momentum and get as much out of it as you can!

These are the top six ways to stay motivated: Get motivated every day.

Have a vision for your life.

Fuel your passion.

Work hard enough to get results.

Put good materials into your mind.

Ride the momentum when it comes.

There’s No Rule Of Success That Says We Have To Get It Right The First Time Out

t’s true — there’s no rule that says we have to get things right on our first try. Boy am I glad this is the case. In fact I think you’d be hard pressed to find many people that “got it right” the first few times they attempted to go after their goals and dreams.

What we undoubtedly do find as we search through the countless stories of those that have had the courage to live their dreams is that they had an over abundance of ambition and sheer persistence. They held onto the idea of what they wanted and said, “by golly I am not going to give up till I reach it!”. I hope you don’t mind me putting that little ‘Leave it to Beaver’ spin on that, but I wanted to make a point

You see, in more cases than not we find illustration after illustration of people that worked their basic idea. Rather than letting not reaching the goal beat

them down they used it as a lesson to learn from. It is through these life lessons that they acquired the skills necessary to eventually attain what they wanted to achieve. Follow your plan!

Don’t be afraid of the bumps that you might meet along the way. Rather, try your best to accept that they are part of the journey. My friend you deserve no less!
