ife is a series of decisions. We make most of these decisions without even realizing it: what to wear, what to eat, what call to take. The process for small decisions is the same when we make life-changing ones.

We work to understand why we have to make the decision, we tease out the options available and then, according to some set of criteria, we weigh the options and we choose.

Making important life decisions can be stressful. But with a sound strategy, you can make any call with confidence. In order to make the right choice, you must: Gain clarity as to why you are having to make the decision in the first place.

Identify your desired result.

Understand the options available. Choices carry costs.

What are the relative costs? Do you really know all of the factors, metrics and variables that should be taken into account? It can be challenging to assemble all of the evidence needed for big decisions.

Choose according to a system of values. Are you letting politics get in the way? Are past experiences that affect your judgment still relevant? Given the speed at which the world is changing, it is more than likely they are not.

Making the right decisions in life can be hard, but new technologies make it easier each year. We can now obtain more real-time data than ever before and we can use software to find correlations and trends an army of analysts couldn’t find in a month. Does this mean personal and organizational decision-making is about to be turned over to machines? It doesn’t; rather it means that technology is a tool that can be used by humans to better execute the decision-making process. Everyone from the owner of a small business to the CEO of a Fortune 100 company should fully comprehend and embrace the technologies that can mediate our decision-marking. It’s an exciting time. Whatever your current role, you can make better decisions when you have machines on your side.

Real estate is in Jessica’s DNA. Her dad was a contractor, and she grew up walking job sites with him, intrigued by every new detail. When a knee injury cost her, her college athletic scholarships, she began working for a local credit union. After she moved up to management and began doing home equity lines of credit, she reconnected with her interest in homes. Jessica found her calling in mortgage lending, and today she is a dedicated client educator intent on providing people with the information they need to make beneficial financial decisions.

My underwriter is just two doors down, so if I have any questions about how to interpret guidelines to make sure we’re on the same page, I just have to walk down there. I don’t ever take a loan application without having my guidelines open, and I pre-underwrite my files to make sure things go smoothly for my clients, referral partners and my own team.”

Jessica and her husband are looking forward to wel-

coming their first child. In the meantime, they are enjoying their four fur babies, who often accompany them for outdoor activities. “My husband and I are both avid outdoor people. We hunt, fish, camp, boat — we’re always on the go. Anytime we can go to the mountains, we are there. That’s where my heart is and my escape. I grew up in Idaho, branding cattle and horseback riding.

I’m also still a runner, and my husband is a runner as well.

We like to go to the foothills to run together and get away from the stresses of the day.”

Above all, Jessica describes herself as “an educator and a helper. I want to help both my referral partners and clients to understand the loan process from start to finish. It’s not just about the mortgage, but for me, it’s about their whole financial outlook. As we go through the process of gathering all of their financial information, I want them to feel that someone has taken the time to answer their questions and guide them to a more secure financial future.”

5 Ways to Stay Positive When You’re Having a Bad Day

I

t’s Murphy’s Law. The line you get in at the department store doesn’t move because there is a lady at the register who waited until the last minute to dig through her overstuffed wallet for a coupon. So you change checkout lanes only to get stuck behind a man digging through a deep pocket for exact change.

We all have bad days when it seems like nothing is going right. But few can compete with Charles, a man who experienced a lifetime’s worth of bad news in a single day.

Charles lived a stressful life. He worked from morning until night without any spare time for annoyances. Little did he know, when he woke up one morning, he had already lost more than $200,000—embezzled from his inheritance by a family “friend.” In an unrelated turn of events, he lost his job the same day. That evening he discovered his wife was filing for divorce.

We don’t have control over the way life plays out, but we do not have to be a victim to its tyranny. With a few savvy insights and positive action steps, we can power through almost anything that comes our way.

Here are five ways to stay upbeat and positive, even when life is not cooperating: 1. Develop a plan.

Often we just feel “off” and we let it affect our day without finding out what it is that made us feel down in the first place. So identify what’s making you feel despondent. Be specific. And once that is done, make a plan. Write out what you can do to turn around your sour mood.

In her Psychology Today article, “Thirteen Small Decisions That Will Ease Anxiety,” Meg Selig writes, “If you start to ruminate over a situation that you’ve already planned for, tell yourself, ‘Stop, I’ve already made a plan.’” The very act of identifying and planning can result in tremendous stress relief.

2. Associate with winners.

We tend to think like the people we hang around.

That’s not news, but how often do we stop and notice who we talk to every day? The group that laments over a two-cent gas hike is not likely the same group that discusses the latest stock options.

It’s two different mindsets. The greatest investment for the worrywart is to find a cell of positive-minded, successful people. How did they get where they are?

How do they think? Let the osmosis begin.

3. Speak positive words.

We tend to believe what we say. Our minds literally go in the direction of our words. Of course, we can’t talk ourselves into being taller, but we can have a more positive outlook by noticing the good, anticipating a positive outcome and speaking it out loud. It’s almost impossible to shout, “I feel fantastic!” and be depressed at the same time. A few verbal affirmations throughout the day will go a long way toward lifting your spirits.

4. Laugh anyway.

There is so much to stress over these days— politics, the economy, the ozone layer, the missing button on your favorite shirt. Still, there is a consensus among many medical professionals that laughter will do you a world of good. In fact, the Mayo Clinic article “Stress relief from laughter? It’s no joke” says, “A rollicking laugh fires up then cools down your stress response and it can increase your heart rate.

The result? A good relaxed feeling.” To stay upbeat and positive, make laughter a deliberate part of your arsenal against the blues.

Put your thoughts into action. It’s hard to worry about a problem while you are busy solving it. This is no time to be passive. Get angry. Get aggressive.

Attack your problems with a vengeance. What right do they have to destroy the pleasure you get out of life? The physical act of execution is a diabolical weapon against whatever ails you and can create a surprising sense of bliss in the midst of the turmoil.

Charles, who arguably had a much worse day than you, adjusted to his loss and even forgave his thieving friend. He used his skills to move forward in a new career and met a beautiful woman in the process. He learned a lot about himself, found some new priorities and doesn’t stress about the length of a department store checkout lane. He is happier than he has been in a long time and looks for opportunities to share his success with others.

If Charles can do it, so can you.

5. Execute.

Once you’ve identified what deflates your spirit, made a plan to overcome it and developed some mental weapons, it’s time to bring out the big guns.

4 Powerful Little Words That Make Life Worthwhile -By Jim Rohn

Y

ou’ve no doubt heard the phrase, a muscle never stretched never grows. The big challenge we all face is how to become all that we can be. That’s why Jim Rohn often said, “You can have more because you can become more—and unless you change how you are, you will always have what you’ve got.”

And he’s right. You know how good it feels to maximize your own potential and stretch yourself to the limit. In this excerpt from a 2001 presentation by Jim Rohn to thousands, the motivational thought leader shares four powerful words that can make living worthwhile:

Learning is the beginning of wealth. Learning is the beginning of health. Learning is the beginning of spirituality. Searching and learning is where the miracle process all begins.

2. Life is worthwhile if you try.

You can’t just learn. Now you have to try something to see if you can do it. Try to make a difference.

Try to make some progress. Try to learn a new skill, or a new sport. It doesn’t mean you can do everything, but there are a lot of things you can do, if you just try. Why not go all out? Try your best. Give it every effort.

How long should you try? Until.

1. Life is worthwhile if you learn.

You have to have learning to exist, let alone succeed. What you don’t know will hurt you. So you have to learn from your own experiences—negative or positive. We learn to do it right by first sometimes doing it wrong—we call that a positive negative. We also learn from other people’s experiences, both positive and negative, too. I’ve always said that it is too bad failures don’t give seminars. Obviously, we don’t want to pay them so they aren’t usually touring around giving seminars. But that information would be very valuable—we would learn how someone who had it all messed it up. Learning from other people’s adventures and mistakes is valuable information because we can learn what not to do without the pain of having tried and failed ourselves.

We learn by what we see, so pay attention. We learn by what we hear, so be a good listener. (Now, I do suggest that you should be a selective listener; don’t just let anybody dump into your mental factory.)

We learn from what we read, so open a book (or two or three). Learn from lectures. Learn from songs.

Learn from sermons. Learn from conversations with people who care. Always keep learning.

3. Life is worthwhile if you stay.

You have to stay from spring until harvest. What does that mean? If you have signed up for the day or for the game or for the project, see it through.

Sometimes calamity comes and then it is worth wrapping it up—and that’s the end. But just don’t end in the middle. Maybe on the next project you pass, but on this one, if you signed up, stay until it’s finished—and always leave it better than you found it.

Some people plant in the spring and leave in the summer. If you’ve signed up for a season, see it through. You don’t have to stay forever, but at least stay until you see it through.

4. Life is worthwhile if you CARE. If you care at all, you will get some results. If you care enough, you can get incredible results.

Care enough to make a difference. Care enough to turn somebody around. Care enough to start a new enterprise. Care enough to change it all. Care enough to be the highest producer. Care enough to set some records. Care enough to win.
