1. Manage yourself.

Sufficiently managing oneself can be challenging, particularly in getting proper sleep, exercise and nutrition.

Self-management is the recognition that effectively using the spaces in our lives is vital. Energy and time are finite resources. Be the captain of your own ship: No one is coming to steer for you.

2. Manage your time.

Time management is enhanced by creating appropriate goals and discerning what is both important and urgent.

3. Manage your stress.

More people, more noise and more distractions require each of us to become more adept at maintaining tranquility.

Multitasking increases our stress, while focusing on one thing at a time decreases stress.

4. Manage change.

In our fast-paced world, change is virtually the only constant. Continually adopting new habits and adapting old ones is vital to a successful career and a happy home life, so that the volume and rate of change does not overwhelm or defeat you.

5. Manage technology.

Technology has always been with us, since the first walking stick, spear, flint and wheel. Often you have no choice but to keep up with the technological “Joneses”; still, you rule technology—don’t let it rule you.

6. Manage leisure.

ccording to Devin Fahrner, regional vice president and mortgage originator at Finance of America Mortgage in Eagle, Idaho, his team has a new word for 2022: Pivot. “This is an industry of innovation,” he says. “The last two years have been amazingly strange, with record low rates, an influx of people coming into this state and lots of refis. Now, inflation is coming and rates are on the rise. It requires that we are constantly reinventing ourselves. We have competitors who would like consumers to believe they have no need for a mortgage advisor, but they don’t understand the value of someone who looks over and understands what is best for the customer. We’re constantly working to create that value proposition.”

With competitive rates, an array of versatile programs and a cutting-edge tech platform, Finance of America Mortgage is delivering innovation that enhances collaboration among professionals and elevates the lending experience for customers.

In addition to the standard conventional, FHA and VA offerings, Finance of America Mortgage has been steadily developing new loan products in response to changing consumer needs. Devin identifies culture as another Finance of America Mortgage innovation, both at the branch level and company wide. “It’s huge for us,” he says. “With our growth has come a greater ability to steer that culture. We never hire just for production — we hire for culture first.

When we do it that way, we know production will come. A large group of happy people who are cohesive are more likely to be productive.”

When it comes to selecting team members, Devin looks for the “eagerness and ability to grow. I can coach production, but I can’t coach culture. People either believe in a power greater than just themselves or are fixated on nothing but their own success. I have an eye for the long game, and I believe success is gained by a ‘givers/ getters’ attitude and bringing up people around you.”

Devin leads with the same spirit. As a producing manager, he is in the trenches alongside his team, and he never expects anyone to do a task he wouldn’t do himself.

Whether he is mentoring his loan officers or guiding his borrowers through a transaction, his “why” is helping people. “What’s been cool about our product evolution is seeing how it changes people’s lives. When we help an elderly person with a reverse mortgage to add income, eliminate their mortgage or consolidate debt, it changes the entire way they walk around. I’ve actually had clients crying at the closing table. Or self employed borrowers who don’t qualify for a traditional loan and can use a 1099 or banks statement or P&L and get a fair rate and payment — you’re their hero. It’s fun to be somebody’s hero and get them a home. And with the amazing appreciation we’ve seen recently, people are building hundreds of thousands in equity through home ownership. It’s especially gratifying when it is somebody who didn’t even think they could buy a home.”

A graduate of Western Oregon State University, Devin served in the United States Marine Corps for seven years.

Today, he is happily married with two daughters. He loves the outdoors, whether he is golfing, hunting, fishing or playing in the snow. Service to the community is always a priority, and Devin works closely with co-manager Taylor Irvin to support worthy causes. Since the pandemic, they have prioritized buying from local businesses. “When the

pandemic happened, our restaurant friends were in dire need, so one of the first things we did was call a small restaurant and order 40 dinners for our employees to keep or gift to someone. We also purchase all of our closing gifts from local vendors. We’ve spent thousands of dollars here in Eagle and Boise to give back and help keep them afloat.”

As the world changes, Finance of America Mortgage continues to innovate new ways of delivering mortgage services. 5 Ways to Start Your Day Just Right

H

ow can I make mornings manageable instead of manic?

Mornings at my house are harried, too. My husband, our kids, the animals: Everyone needs something, and it’s usually chaotic until they’re out the door. But my 18-year-old daughter, Emma, set a good example for all of us. Since middle school, she has set her alarm to allow for a full hour of calm before school.

Her rationale: “I refuse to be rushed, and I refuse to be late.” My husband, our son and I also adopted Emma’s early reveille, so we walk out well-prepared and eager to conquer the day.

To learn what works for other people, I turned to business owners who consider themselves happy and successful.

1. Moment of gratitude. “I say my grateful prayer before getting out of bed,” says inventor Sandy Stein of West Hills, Calif. “We tend to dwell on all the things that go wrong, and it’s easy to overlook just how much greatness I have in my life.” On the rare occasions she skips her ritual, Stein says the tough times of the day overshadow the good, reducing productivity.

2. Prayer and meditation. Some people do one or the other, but small-business coach Lena West of New York City does both. “It’s my A & L ritual— Ask & Listen,” says West, who devotes at least 15 minutes to “asking for what I need and then listening for the answer…. [Afterward] I feel grounded, guided and supported all day. I feel like I’m co-creating my outcome with the universe. When things don’t go as planned, I’m not as ruffled… which is critical for my life as an entrepreneur.”

3. Puppy time. Minutes after she wakes up in Los Angeles, Melissa Rappaport, who owns a public relations firm, heads outside with her dogs. “The refreshing air, along with watching them explore the great outdoors, sets a positive tone for my day.”

4. Start social. While it may seem counterproductive to start the day with digital distractions, Boston-based Instagram consultant Sue Zimmerman spends 45 minutes on the social platform “getting inspired by vivid visual content.” Style and food photo streams are her favorites because “they provide a creative charge that motivates me to have a beautiful day.”

Another social media strategist echoes those sentiments. Tulsa, Okla.-based Cindy Morrison starts her morning with 20 minutes on Flipboard, an online source for organizing and viewing her favorite magazines. “I catch up on People magazine’s posts because pop culture makes me happy. By the time I

hop in the shower, I know what’s happened overnight in my industry, and I’m ready for the day.”

5. Work out before work. Orlando esthetician Mindy Black knows she’s at her best after hitting the gym, so she revamped her schedule accordingly. “My first client appointment is now at 10 a.m., which allows me to start my day with a full, unrushed workout.

Nothing makes me feel better and more energized, and my clients deserve me at my peak.”

Knowing what not to do is as important as what to do. For many, avoiding email keeps them on track with morning intentions, while others insist on seeing the new arrivals to their inboxes. Only through trial and error can each of us develop the habits that serve us best.

4 Steps To Create Balance In Your Life

or most of us, walking upright doesn’t require a lot of thought. We took our first steps when we were young and now we just do it. Throughout our day, walking from the bedroom to the kitchen or from the car to the office door, we don’t think much about staying balanced or avoiding a fall.

lenges. But I also knew I didn’t want to lose what was important to me. That prompted me to make a key life decision: rewriting my definition of success. Instead of acclaim or advancement or achievement, I decided that, for me, success means having those closest to me love and respect me the most.

But what happens when we’re not just strolling on a wide, level surface? Have you ever tried to walk on a log across a creek? Or the length of a gymnastics balance beam? Suddenly falling becomes a real possibility.

When that happens, our minds focus on balance. We think through every step and continuously make minor adjustments to stay upright.

For me, success was possible only if the people I loved were standing beside me. If you want to truly succeed in life, you must ask yourself a question: By pursuing success, am I drawing closer to—or pushing myself further from— the most important people in my life? When you choose a definition of success that includes your loved ones, you make them a priority. And you take the journey together.

Balancing work and family tends to be more like walking on a log than a sidewalk. It requires intentional focus and concentration. Deep down, we all know that. But it’s easy to forget and approach it casually, which can set us up for a fall and damage what’s most important to us.

So how do you maintain work-life balance? Here are four things you can do right now to focus on keeping your balance and avoiding the pitfalls.

1. Redefine success.

Success means having those closest to me love and respect me the most.

2. Determine your priorities.

In a university commencement address, Brian Dyson, former CEO of Coca-Cola, gave this advice to the graduating class: Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling five balls in the air. You name them work, family, health, friends and spirit, and you’re keeping all of these in the air.

You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back.

But the other four balls: family, health, friends and spirit, are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same.

A glass ball is not only more fragile than a rubber ball; it’s also more valuable. When we devote ourselves to keeping the rubber ball in the air, we risk the others crashing to the ground.

After defining success in a way that includes your loved ones, the next step is to adjust your priorities to reflect that.

If your family or close friends have been pushed to the side for work, address the problem immediately. Schedule time for them just as you would a meeting or task. Put the people you love on your calendar first and let other priorities follow.

3. Recognize work-life tides.

So much of balancing work and life is the practice of making small adjustments. Responsibilities ebb and flow like the tide. There will be times when much of your attention has to be focused on one side of the equation, maybe because of a big project or a looming deadline.

And it’s OK for the balance to swing in one direction for a short time. Those times are necessary, and they’re not a problem unless you remain there for too long. Remember your top priorities and make the necessary adjustments to rebalance.

Knowing what to focus on, and when, establishes the balance you need to be successful and still keep your sanity. Preparing for the tide not only frees you to succeed at work, but also empowers you to build a rich and rewarding life outside of work.

4. Create your legacy.

It’s never too early to start thinking about your legacy. In Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, he writes, “Begin with the end in mind.” Whether you are just starting out or you have more years behind than in front of you, you can still keep the destination in mind.

What do you want to be known for? Who do you want to be with you in the end? What do you want written on your tombstone or in your obituary? These are the questions to ask yourself. Your legacy will be built from your answers, but only if you act on them. It’s crucial that your daily actions match your goals. Small significant daily actions build momentum over time and establish a legacy you can be proud of.

Taking care of your family, your health, your relationships and your spirit is not a selfish act; it’s a sustaining one. By maintaining an intense focus on balancing work and life, especially when you feel like you’re walking a tightrope, you’ll protect what’s most important to you and continue the journey without faltering.

There Are 3 Types of Employees— but Only 1 Is Exceptional

arbara Boegner and Gustav Myburgh were late—for their own wedding. Their guests waited… 15 minutes, a half hour, nearly an hour… but they weren’t too worried—probably nothing more than a traffic jam.

But it wasn’t a traffic jam. While driving to the chapel, Barbara and Gustav spotted three armed men holding a truck’s driver at gunpoint. The couple, her in a wedding dress and him in a suit, confronted the hijackers, who jumped into a truck and fled.

So what did the soon-to-be-married duo do? They chased them and eventually caught up, and the bad guys were arrested.

Barbara and Gustav are law enforcement officers, and on their special day, they faced a choice—carry on and continue to the church to get married, or deal with the gunmen. Their personal allegiance to their work guided a difficult decision, made in a split second. They represent a different type of employee—the one who comes to work to fulfill a mission, the one who derives personal meaning and fulfillment, not merely a salary, from their work.

Not all employees are like Barbara and Gustav, though. There are three different types of employees, and only one that’s truly exceptional: 1. Job People: Their motivation is survival. The question highest on their mind is, “What is my next job?” leading to high turnover and negative impact on business.

2. Career People: They often think “What’s in it for me?” and are identifiable through the stack of papers they always carry and an attitude that seems to speak, “I’m in a meeting, therefore I am.” Turnover is average, as they work to climb the corporate ladder, and impact on business is neutral.

3. Missionaries: They are true contributors, those who have elevated themselves to a mission. A commitment to higher purpose—helping others, solving problems, making people’s lives easier— drives missionaries, and if they can believe in what your company does, turnover is low and because

their commitment energizes not only their work but also the organization itself, business impact is positive.

Your job—your mission—is to bring in the missionaries and then provide them an occupational environment where they’ll excel. Here are some steps you can follow to create the kind of company that attracts the best of the best: • Change the way you think about your workplace and the profile of people you seek to attract.

A product-centric company doesn’t care about passion—they only need people who can operate processes.

• Design customer experience around the employee.

One of the most common mistakes is focusing on customer experience strategies while taking employees for granted. No matter how carefully you plan the elements and execution of customer experiences, employees who don’t find meaning in their jobs will doom your customer experience strategy to failure.

• Recruit for passion and attitude even above skill sets. And more specifically, seek people who are passionate about your specific product. You can’t train passion or attitude—so you must hire it in and nurture it. According to studies, only 23 percent of employees are classified as engaged. They fully believe in the company, they want to contribute, take initiatives and go above and beyond.

• Cut bait. When employees are unable to find or maintain their passion under the new direction or vision of their companies, let them go so that their misery, contempt or skepticism doesn’t influence other employees.

Character Is Your Masterpiece to Build

ould creating your character be likened to an artist creating a sculpture? I believe that character is not something that just happens by itself any more than a chisel can create a work of art without the hand of an artist guiding it. In both instances, a conscious decision for a specific outcome has been made. A conscious process is at work. Character is the result of hundreds and hundreds of choices you make that gradually turn who you are, at any given moment, into who you want to be.

If that decision-making process is not present, you will still be somebody. You will still be alive but might have a personality rather than a character.

Character is not something you were born with and can’t change. In fact, because you weren’t born with it, it is something that you must take responsibility for creating. I don’t believe that adversity by itself builds character, and I certainly don’t think that success erodes it. Character is built by how you respond to what happens in your life—whether it’s winning every game, losing every game, getting rich or dealing with hard times. You

build character out of certain qualities that you must create and diligently nurture within yourself—just like you would plant and water a seed or gather wood and build a campfire. You have to look for those things in your heart and gut. You have to chisel away in order to find them, just like chiseling away the rock to create the sculpture that previously only existed in your imagination.

But do you want to know the amazing thing about character? If you are sincerely committed to making yourself into the person you want to be, you’ll not only create those qualities, but you’ll continually strengthen them. And you will recreate them in abundance even as you are drawing on them every day of your life. Character sustains itself and nurtures itself as it is being put to work, tested and challenged. Once it is formed, character will serve as a solid, lasting foundation upon which to build the life you desire.
