ith an easy laugh and an infectiously positive attitude, Ticor Title officer Johna Cannon approaches each day with an outlook that reflects her professional spirit. “I’m here not only to be a knowledgeable resource, but to also maintain productive and friendly relationships with my colleagues and clients,” she says. “I want people to feel comfortable and secure when they’re working with me. To that end, I’ll take the measures necessary to ensure that I can provide them with accurate and timely information.”

Johna launched her title career in 1995 as a proofreader in the Word Processing Department of a large company.

Like many, she was unfamiliar with the implications of title on real estate transactions. With time, though, she became increasingly well-versed in the terminology and processes of title. Intrigued, she pursued a successive series of positions that would at once make best use of her growing skillset, and continue to challenge and interest her. From proofreader to typist, she moved to become an escrow liaison, then title assistant. In 2000 Johna was offered an opportunity to run her own desk as a title officer, and she didn’t hesitate to accept. “I was so excited,” she recalls. “The position entails a lot of responsibility, but I enjoy every day.”

Her proactive approach has earned Johna a fiercely loyal clientele. In a transitioning market, she has consistently sought to align herself with a firm that offers the support and stability she requires to offer top-notch service. “I have clients who have followed me,” she reveals. “It’s an honor to know that what I’m doing has made a difference.”

Her ongoing communication, thoughtful approach to deciphering challenging files, and commitment to assisting her clients to her maximum capacity are unwavering, and Johna excels in cultivating and maintaining strong collegial relationships.

Working primarily with escrow officers and real estate agents, Johna offers direct and straightforward communication. “Oftentimes people are reluctant to ask questions because they feel awkward,” she notes. “I’m here to field any question, to provide a timely and accurate answer, and to help facilitate a successful title process.”

She enjoys outdoor recreation and is particularly fond of spending time at her family’s getaway home in Arizona. “It’s on a river,” she reveals. “It’s a great place to go boating, unwind and recharge.”

Kathleen Boyd A native of Hawaii, Kathleen was introduced to title upon relocating to California in the mid-1970s. After answering a help-wanted advertisement for customer service representatives, she discovered a new world of business. “I had no idea what title insurance was,” she recalls. It didn’t take long, though, for her to realize that she had found her calling. Says Kathleen, “I was hooked immediately. What appears as a simple line item on a real estate transaction is such a crucial element to the process, such a critical component to their ability to accomplish their dreams. I believe that every day is an opportunity for me to be a part of life-changing events, and that’s a wonderful feeling.”

Kathleen’s professional journey has been an evolutionary one, with great attention to every step on her career path. She moved from customer service rep to supervisor, then explored the intricacies of title in searching and examining positions. Her leadership skills and proactive approach led to an opportunity to head a burgeoning department focused on the secondary lending market, and then to a position in title sales, a lucrative job that gave her a new appreciation for the structure of the business. “I was successful, but lonely,” she reveals. “My work in sales provided me with a great perspective; today I operate with the knowledge that my sales reps are also my clients, and I do everything I can to meet or exceed their needs.”

Eventually Kathleen returned to an internal role at the heart of the title office. Hand selected to open a boutique branch as a full-fledged title officer, she was instrumental in the consistent growth of the company, which blossomed from a core staff of five to a thriving group of nearly 70 employees. “It was an amazing opportunity,” she recalls. “But after over fifteen years, I was ready for a new challenge.” Ticor Title, she notes, was an ideal next step.

Kathleen joined Ticor Title in 2012, accepting a non-traditional position as a co-title officer with her colleague Cindy Fern. “It’s a relatively new concept,” she concedes. “But it makes sense. Our team allows us to focus on our individual strengths, to resolve issues more expediently, and to offer exceptional support to our clientele.” As real estate markets continue to transition, the workloads fielded by title companies have increased dramatically. “With two title officers, there’s always someone available to answer a question or address a concern,” says Kathleen. “Our clients notice the difference, and they appreciate it.”

ver three decades after launching her career, Title Officer Cindy Fern reveals that she continues to enjoy the challenges her profession presents. “Each file represents a unique transaction, a different experience,” she says. “There is always a new opportunity to learn and grow.”

Cindy was introduced to the title industry through a friend, who suggested her diligence and attention to detail were ideal skills for the business. An entry-level position as an assistant was her starting point, and she steadily moved into a series of roles with increased responsibility. What distinguished her from the start was Cindy’s proactive approach and solution-oriented mindset. “At one point early in my career,” she recalls, “there was a mass migration of the title unit. Everyone quit.” In no position to be without a job, she stepped up to handle client business. “From the window of my office I could see a Ticor Title sign,” she laughs.

“When our clients would call with questions, I’d reach out to other title companies for the answers. I never wanted to simply tell someone I didn’t know how to help them.” It was her make-or-break opportunity, and she didn’t miss a beat. “After a while, I realized that I knew the answers,” she says. And Cindy has never looked back.

As a title officer, Cindy utilizes years of knowledge and experience as well as an intuitive sense of business.

“I enjoy being part detective as a problem solver,” she quips. “There are always methods of resolving challenges, and my aim is to consistently identify them.”

Her comprehensive understanding of the title process as a whole is unparalleled, allowing Cindy to assist her clients with efficacy and an awareness of the big picture.

“It is not uncommon for some lesser experienced title officers to have an incomplete understanding of what a title policy entails,” she observes. “Without that knowledge, it’s difficult to think outside the box.

Bryon, who grew up in Huntington Beach, attended the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising where he focused on merchandise product development. So Bryon launched his career in customer service before spending almost 2 years on the title unit, gaining a wealth of knowledge and industry experience before moving into the sales arena.

What distinguishes Bryon today is his can-do spirit and his service-oriented approach. “I’m committed to identifying innovative ways to help my agents build their businesses,” he asserts. He accomplishes this objective by acting as a knowledgeable resource and liaison for agents, helping to put them in touch with the individuals they need to execute successful transactions. “I’m very hands-on in my business,” Bryon notes.
