Hospital pharmacists - new catalysts According to Wikipedia the definition of a catalyst is: “a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction.” This substance participates in the reaction, but it is not consumed during the process. This was the general motto that emerged during one of the ‘thought shower’ sessions of the Scientific Committee 2 years ago while determining the theme of the 2017 congress. This process where we freely associate our thoughts about our profession and what to do, how to do, what could be actual topics during the next congresses is a very fruitful process. The computer program XMind facilitates this process and makes it easier for us to aggregate our output of single terms and words. Our profession is not a static activity that goes on for years without any progression or change. It has adapted to the social changes which happen in society as a continuing process. In the last 50 years, for example, our profession changed from a compounding and analytical oriented craftsmanship into a patient oriented healthcare professional. How did this happen? The hospital pharmacists started to specialise

in the early sixties of the last century. Clinical Pharmacy became more and more a priority in the everyday activities of hospital Pharmacists. They participated in this transition as partners of other healthcare professionals like doctors and nurses and we found our own place and responsibility for patient care. Doctors were not familiar with a pharmacist at the bedside, but thanks to our perseverance in these activities they have become used to our presence and later they even appreciated the input of our knowledge on medication. We accelerated some of the processes, but were not consumed by it: the perfect example of a catalyst. And there is more. The changes in the international or global recognition of our profession may lead to a European legal recognition. The activities to formulate our statements, competencies and translation of these into a common training framework is one of the major changes that EAHP has facilitated and will continue doing so. The third keynote of tomorrow will be dedicated to the Common Training Framework and the implications of these for a European training program for hospital pharmacists. Accreditation is a very important issue. We are not only

involved in clinical trials, but we should develop our own fields of research. The opportunities for hospital pharmacists to continue growing in their profession are immense and we will share more about our work with you during the 2018 congress in Gothenburg with the theme “Hospital Pharmacists – show us what you can do!’ More than 800 posters are displayed during this congress. But the level of academic competence is sometimes difficult to measure. How to rate quality? Hospital pharmacy research is an area that requires further development. Several workshops and interactive seminars during our congresses are programmed to support and develop research skills. The Academy Seminar in September 2017 will go more into this and will focus on Pharmacy Practice Research. Be your own catalyst and attend the seminar and the workshops. Finally, this congress in itself is a catalyst. Come and join the change and be a catalyst in your own way.
