The Limestone Creek Hunt is planning a “Holidays, Horses, and Hounds” shopping event with several artist vendors at The Brae Loch Inn on Sunday, Dec. 3 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Limestone Creek Hunt to present shopping event By kate Hill Staff Writer The Limestone Creek Hunt (LCH) is planning a “Holidays, Horses, and Hounds” shopping event at The Brae Loch Inn on Sunday, Dec. 3 from 1 to 5 p.m. Established in 1939, LCH is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization that promotes a love of horses and hounds, good sportsmanship, land conservation, and a spirit of good fellowship through the enjoyment of various social activities, including trail rides, clinics, hunter paces, and programs to educate people on foxhunting traditions.

The upcoming fundraiser is open to the public and will feature a diverse array of giftable items from several different artists and craftsmen. According to LCH Vice President and Joint Master of Foxhounds Jenny Coughlin, the hunt club has asked the participating vendors to donate to LCH based on how well they do at the sale. “Hopefully, they will all do well and be able to donate generously,” she said. “I am a big believer in having events that I personally would like to attend, and this sounded fun! . . . I put together what I think should appeal to just about everyone; it is not at all just for horse people. There will be everything from stocking stuffers to major gifts for all ages, even for hard-to-shop-for dads and husbands.” The Brae Loch gift shop will also be open for even more options.

A fruit and cheese platter will be provided, and a cash bar will be available. Coughlin said she conceived the idea for the event last summer when she needed some work done on her boots. “That was when I met Penny Ploughman and right off realized I had to get her to Cazenovia,” she said. “That led me to think of the talented craftsmen and artists that we had within our club membership and community. The Brae Loch has always been good to us, and their upstairs is a great open area for a social kind of shopping experience. . . . The artists appreciate having a place to sell their wares. Many of us are involved in Cazenovia’s not-forprofit organizations, which we are so fortunate to have so many of. It can start to feel like you are always asking for a donation of some sort from the local businesses and craftsmen. While I know they give what

they can, it is our intention to create an event where they are also able to benefit.”

Caz Chamber presents annual awards, announces upcoming Caz Life initiatives By kate Hill Staff Writer

On Tuesday, Nov. 14, the Greater Cazenovia Area Chamber of Commerce (GCACC) held its Annual Membership Dinner Meeting at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Cazenovia. The evening featured a cocktail hour, dinner and dessert, an award ceremony, updates on upcoming initiatives, and a performance by Dewayne Hill (dewaynehill.com), a comedy magician who has performed on “America’s Got Talent” and for many chambers of commerce and businesses across the country. Last spring, the GCACC launched the Caz Life events committee to help foster local business development, promote tourism, and implement effective marketing strategies to enhance the vibrancy and economic growth of the village. “The whole project of Caz Life started out with [some people] having coffee in the morning and talking about what a great community we had,” said GCACC President and Caz Life member Ralph Monforte. “We were kind of concerned we weren’t doing enough. One of the biggest concerns was that

we had all this talent, we had all these people, we had all these things going on throughout the whole community, and we really didn’t know how to get it all together. We were fortunate enough to put together a team [to try to make that happen].” Shortly after its establishment, Caz Life launched the website Cazenovialife. com to highlight upcoming community events hosted by local merchants as well as non-profits and other organizations.

Annual Chamber Awards

During the dinner, Monforte announced the GCACC awards for Citizen of the Year, Non-Profit of the Year, and Business of

the Year. Citizen of the Year This 2023 Chamber Citizen of the Year award was presented to long-time Cazenovia resident Joan Brooks. Her husband, Paul, spoke about some of her many contributions to the community throughout the years. Brooks, who is a lifelong lover of the arts, currently serves as the director of the Stone Quarry Art Park Board of Directors. She has also served on the Cazenovia Art Trail Steering Committee and the boards of the Cazenovia Public Library, the Cazenovia Children’s House, Project Café, and other

organizations. Additionally, she organized numerous community events as an employee of Cazenovia College and was involved in the early planning of the GCACC. “[We] are grateful that you have chosen Cazenovia as the town to leave your mark on, and quite a mark you’ve made,” said Paul. “Thank you for your involvement in the community and your drive to continually make things better. You are the champion of so many projects over the years. We all owe you a debt of gratitude.” Brooks said she accepted the award in honor of all the amazing people in the community who make a difference every day.

“Living in this community makes you want to be involved and work on things that matter,” she said. “. . . We are really lucky that we live here.” Non-Profit of the Year The Chamber NonProfit of the Year award was presented to the Cazenovia Area Community Development Association (CACDA) for exemplifying the spirit of community collaboration and innovation. CACDA is an independent, community-based organization that represents a broad cross-section of stakeholders in the greater Cazenovia area. It was formed to assist local Chamber l Page 14

This week many of us will be celebrating Thanksgiving with friends and family. We will gather and indulge in a feast of turkey and other staples of the holiday season and perhaps enjoy a slice of pie or two or other indulgent desserts. Many will look forward to watching football or the Macy’s Parade, or be eagerly anticipating hitting the stores early to go shopping for Black Friday sales. Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate and be grateful for what we have as part of a tradition that goes back hundreds of years. The idea of Thanksgiving goes back well before the Pilgrims made it to America and can be traced to harvest festivals and religious observations and similarly these observances were held in America as early as 1607 in Virginia. But it was the celebration in Plymouth that has become woven into the tapestry of our country. With the help of the Native Americans, particularly Squanto, who taught settlers how to catch eel and plant corn, in 1621 the Pilgrims had their first successful harvest and celebrated with a three day feast. But the idea did not become the tradition we now know for some time. The holiday was celebrated off and on from 1789 onward, when George Washington issued a proclamation at the request of Congress. It was not until the presidency of Abraham Lincoln that the modern holiday really came to be. In 1863, during the Civil War, Lincoln proclaimed a national day for giving thanks. History tells us it was a letter from writer and editor Sarah Josepha Buell Hale that caught Lincoln’s attention. Hale had been working for many years, writing to five presidents to encourage the establishment of a national day of thanksgiving. With roots in Plymouth, the day was celebrated in New England, but every state set its own date and the day was largely unrecognized in the southern part of the country at that time. Establishing this day, was seen as a unifying event in the midst of the Civil War. From there, the holiday and its traditions began to truly take shape, with regional variations, but with every president since Lincoln affirming the last Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day. This changed with Franklin Roosevelt, who in 1939, declared the fourth, rather than the last Thursday of November, which had five weeks that year, as Thanksgiving Day. Facing the Great Depression, it has been reported, Roosevelt believed this move would give merchants more time to sell Christmas goods at a time when the idea of promoting Christmas merchandise before Thanksgiving was considered to be in poor taste. This created divisions among political lines and in 1941 Congress introduced legislation fixing the date to the last Thursday of the month, but the senate introduced an amendment calling for the celebration to be on the fourth Thursday, which generally is the last Thursday of the month. This is a long and at times tangled history to get to the modern celebration, but no matter its roots, it is important to remember the root words, thanks and giving, and to take a few moments to give thanks for those things we are fortunate enough to have and consider those who are not as fortunate and give something back. As the start of the holiday season, a time when many of us are looking to support charitable organizations, this is a good time to consider a donation to a local food pantry or church organization that helps feed those who struggle with food insecurity and pass along, even in some small way, the blessings we are fortunate enough to have to others.

In truth, making the pudding is not difficult in the sense that it requires esoteric skills. It simply takes a bit of time and some focused attention. First, you have to soak the pearls for a day. I thought that there must be some quicker way to do this, so I consulted google and found a recipe that required only a one-hour soak. I followed the recipe and it made pudding. It was ok pudding but not the luscious, chewy version that I remembered at my grandmother’s table. I still had more of the precious pearls, so I forged ahead. Reverting to the old version required some patience on my part. After an overnight soak, following the recipe which required my standing over the stove, carefully adding the warmed milk and tapioca to an egg mixture and stirring the pot for what seemed to be hours, I produced the desired result. Lusciousness, smooth with a generous number of indescribably delicious pearls floating in a symphony of vanilla flavor … perfect. My spouse and I consumed all six desserts in two days. Heck, if I were alone, they would have been gone in one. Maybe in one afternoon. The effort was worth it. Ann Ferro is a mother, a grandmother and a retired social studies teacher. While still figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up, she lives in Marcellus with lots of books, a spouse and a large orange cat.

Cornell in the Community: Big Apple Crunch

Submitted by Whitney Kmetz CCE SNAP-Ed Team Leader

O

n Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. you may have heard a loud crunch in Morrisville, as students and staff at Morrisville-Eaton Edward R. Andrews Elementary School took part in the nationwide Big Apple Crunch. Lead by Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Southern Tier Region SNAP-Ed Team members Regina Arnold and Whitney Kmetz, about 300 individuals participated to make this celebration of local agriculture and healthy choices come to life. The event takes place on this day for New York schools to celebrate the apple harvest, appreciate eat-

ing local, and to inspire everyone to “crunch” on apples through FarmOn! Morrisville-Eaton. The organization participates with the SNAP-Ed program in a variety of programs to promote healthy eating, went above and beyond for this year’s crunch. All of the elementary students and staff wore yellow, red, or green for the event. SUNY Morrisville athletes participated and brought along the SUNY Morrisville Mascot “Moe” to serve as the stem of our apple. With perfect weather, the event happened outside – in fact, it was so warm that even the bees came to check out the apples. There were cones set up in the form of an apple, and everyone stood around the perimeter of the cones.

The art teacher snapped a photo with a drone above the group. The SNAP-Ed Team Leader sent the pictures to the FarmOn! Foundation, which organizes the Big Apple Crunch, and within a few days, we were notified that we won a prize! This win means that FarmOn! will be giving Morrisville-Eaton Edward R. Andrews Elementary School a prize of $1,000 for a victory garden. The victory garden will be a spot where children will be able to participate in growing fresh vegetables for the school to use during lunch time and special events. The school is extremely excited about this win and everyone is looking forward to showing the kids how to grow their own food right in the school backyard.

Religious faith and denominations To the editor: Recent issues of the Republican have included an exchange of letters from Charles Mirucki and Kevin Curtis in which I think it is fair to say focus on “traditional religious faiths” (Mirucki), and “organized religions” (Curtis). Interesting readings, worth responding to. First I ask Mr. Mirucki what traditional religious faith he is talking about, and do notice he writes of the plural “faiths.” This points to “denominations” starting perhaps with the Reformation when Martin Luther led the breakup of the Roman Catholic Church, which itself now has Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox denominations and on to many Protestant denominations (please note that Luther wrote he was a Jewish hater). So why do we have so many denominations? I suggest because different groups interpreted the Bible differently, had different ideas of God and his action in the world, have different hierarchies, and different worship practices and went their separate ways protesting those who they believed to be wrong. This also happened in religions other than Christianity; In Islam Suni and Shia, in Judaism Conservative and Orthodox. It’s no wonder it is often said more people have been killed in religious war than by any other type of war. The U.S. is supposed to be a polyglot of many things, including religion, freedom

of religion and freedom from religion. So, I ask again Mr. Mirucki, which traditional faith do you mean? I suspect when asked which is the true religious faith, the common answer would be “mine.” By the way, the golden rule predates Jesus by 2,000 years and by many different philosophies and religious faiths. To the editor: As I sit at my kitchen table and make lists of things to do to prepare for another Thanksgiving feast, I can’t help but think about last year when I had two teenaged foreign exchange students, Andy from Bulgaria and Medhat from Gaza, joining us for this most American of holidays. We always head to Sheds the day after Thanksgiving to cut down our family’s Christmas trees. Later that evening, only Medhat and I were home, so together we decorated the tree in my living room, and I have a photo of Medhat hanging the star on top of my tree. After a year of wonderful experiences, the boys returned to their homes last May. A few days into October, Medhat face-timed me and I had the opportunity to catch up with him and meet his two younger sisters and mother. Today, the family is living an existence, uncertain of survivial from day to day. They left their home in Gaza City and have headed south with hordes of civilians to try to escape

the bombing and destruction. Medhat last reported that their home has been demolished. My family hasn’t heard from him in several days. We hope he is still alive, but we understand that with food, water, fuel, and electricity being withheld from Palestinians in Gaza, Medhat isn’t able to charge his phone, so communitcation is almost impossible. Is he starving yet? Is he drinking fetid water? Can he survive much longer? Medhat and Andy both went to school with our children in Cazenovia. Their lives were touched and perhaps these American kids are now paying a little more attention to the crisis in the Middle East. The acts of Hamas on Oct. 7 (1,200 Israelis killed/ 240 taken hostage) which started this latest decimation of Gaza, were not done with the knowledge of Gazans, yet they have become the targets of Israel’s revenge. Consider that since 2008’s Israel’s Operation Cast Lead, over 17,000 Gazans have been killed by Israeli forces and missiles with countless injured, weapons and ammunition supplied by the tax dollars of US citizens. The carnage has to stop and I implore readers to contact their representatives to demand a ceasefire. More importantly this conflict must finally end with the creation of a Palestinian State or the establishment of one country that accepts both Jews and Palestinians as equal citizens. For Medhat, for justice, for peace. Pat Carmeli Cazenovia

The Old Guide’s Story, a new book of tales of the northern Adirondacks that has been edited and annotated by Fay Welch, will please students of nature, lovers of forests, and all of those who long for the outdoor life. Mr. Welch, as many Cazenovians know, has spent a lifetime as a conservationist, a forester, and a lecturer at

the State College of Forestry. He found the reminiscences of an Adirondack guide, Charles Merrill, first published in The Malone Evening Telegram in 1903, worth putting in more permanent form and undertook the job of doing it. The Old Guide’s Story is a chronicle of a pioneer family, the Merrills, who moved in a covered wagon from New Hampshire to the Chateauguay Valley of the Adirondacks in 1823, and by 1869 had established a hotel accommodating sportsmen and businessmen who wanted to rest in the quite solitudes of the wilderness. The book is handsomely illustrated by Mr. Welch’s son, Tom who graduated from Cazenovia High School and is now a sophomore in the College of Fine Arts at Syracuse University.

The final stage in the opening at the new library in Cazenovia will be completed in January. The newly renovated library museum will be open to the public on Jan. 23. The museum is a collection of artifacts, some of which pertain to local history and others which are, according to Ann Marshall, “A cabinet of curiosities.” At the turn of the century people collected “things” and often gave their treasures to the library. Over the years, the library collection had grown so much that librarian, Betsy Kennedy said it was like the village attic. In 1991, Jonathan Holstein, Ann Marshall, Mary Seldon Evans and Pat Hudelson spearheaded an effort to clean and catalog the artifacts. They were aided by many volunteers. The showpiece of the collection is the 2,000 year old Egyptian mummy given to the library by Cazenovian Robert James Hubbard.

All of this is a roundabout way to say that there is, really, such a thing as a game meaning more than it should. If your entire life and identity is wrapped around who you are and who you might defeat on a cold Saturday in November, then perhaps it’s a good idea to reevaluate your whole approach to the thing. For that, you can blame

Crouse launches 36th Annual Lights of Love campaign Clocktower Lighting ceremony set for Monday, Nov. 27 The holiday season is upon us and with it one of Central New York’s most glowing traditions: the annual Crouse Health Foundation Lights of Love campaign. Each of the 3,000 lights on the iconic Crouse clocktower are illuminated, representing gifts — given in honor or in memory of someone — that will support the hospital’s ability to provide comprehensive medical services and programs for our community. This year’s campaign proceeds will benefit the update and repair of the iconic Crouse clocktower itself, a Syracuse landmark that has been lighting the city’s skyline since 1927. The clocktower is in need of structural repairs and restoration including the roof, windows and painting. These needed repairs will allow it to continue to be a beacon of health, hope and healing for decades to come. “The Crouse clocktower has long been a signal of strength and hope for the communities we serve in Central New York and its preservation is essen-

tial,” said Crouse Health Foundation Chair Vincent Spina. “With this restoration, it will continue to serve as a visible reminder of the Crouse mission, vision and values.” Contributors and community leaders are invited to attend the lighting ceremony and reception on Monday, Nov. 27, from 4:30 – 6 p.m., on the Pomeroy Patient Patio at Crouse Hospital. Those making the campaign possible this year are:

* I believe 90% of golfers in CNY would tell you their golf season is over by October 1st. * I believe 95% of golfers in CNY would tell you their season is over by November 1st. * I believe 99.99% of golfers in CNY would say their golf season is over by December 30th. * The rest of us (.01%) will hope and yes, perhaps even pray that the temperatures will creep past 40 degrees in December, January, and February so we can enjoy a few more “bonus days” on a golf course that will allow us to put $5 or $10 in a tin cup or bowl that is clearly identified by a sign, somewhere near the door to the Pro-Shop. It’s “Greens Fees”…based on the “Honor System”. * OR, we can all wish we were Ken Walcyk, a member at Drumlins Country Club, who has played golf for 167 consecutive months in CNY. December will be his 168th consecutive month (14th year) and there is no doubt in my mind he will do it! I will have him on my radio show in December to tell us “why” he decided to start his streak and describe his remarkable journey. * Look at it this way golfers, once December 1st rolls around, we will only have to wait about 90 days before we be put our clubs back in the trunk of our cars by March, just waiting for the first day of decent weather. What are your plans for a Winter Fitness Program for Golf? Most of you probably don’t have one and don’t care, that you don’t have one. That’s ok. Golf allows you to learn and even make a few mistakes along your frustrating journey to establish your own special relationship with the game. As far as the Winter Fitness Program… No, I am not talking about 4-5 times a week that takes 5-6 hours. I’m talking about golf’s latest trend for working out, not only during the season, but during the off-season. It’s called MICRO-WORKOUTS - TOTAL BODY. I am currently planning my MICRO-WORKOUT PROGRAM that will begin in December, because even I find it difficult to plan for 5-6 hours every week. The MICRO-WORKOUT is a short (20 minute), but, “incredibly effective bursts of exercises designed specifically for golfers with the clock ticking against them”, says Jeff Pelizzaro of 18STRONG. Why MICRO? Jeff says, “Because time is a luxury and efficiency is key”. Research is showing that shorter, high-intensity workouts can be

just as effective, if not more so, than longer workouts. Jeff claims it’s about “quality” not “quantity”. Here’s Why…according to Jeff. Micro Workouts - Total Body is the only micro training program built for golfers to, help you look, feel, and play your best and use your strength to unlock: Mobility - Eliminate your body’s tightness and stiffness to move and swing fluidly and effortlessly. Speed and Distance - I’ve never met a golfer who doesn’t want more distance to give you more scoring opportunities. Power - Give yourself the TNT for the ball to explode off your club. Balance and Stability - Build a rock solid foundation for a swing that allows you to have better control, accuracy and feel. Stamina and Energy - Put your lost strokes from mental and physical fatigue in the rear view mirror. Rotation - Throw gasoline on on your swing for more power, speed and distance. Injury Prevention - Bulletproof your body so you can stay on the course for many years to come. That’s music to my ears…Jeff. For years I have heard and seen examples of golfers starting and then quitting program after program to get in shape and stay in shape. However, none of the programs have recommended a 20 minute, high intensity program, “against the clock”. I intend to give it a “go” with 2-3 MICRO WORKOUTS per week to start…beginning December 1. Jeff also says, “If you are a gym rat who wears a 2-hour gym session as a badge of honor - then Micro Workouts - Total Body isn’t for you. However, if you want an easy-to-commit-to MICRO training program to start creating life long habits, then you are in the right place”. Just go to: SUPPORT@18STRONG.COM. I’m going back there this week

was next – until Florida dominated them in the title game. There are those who bemoan the coming 12team College Football Playoff because, in their views, games like this one can get devalued. While they might have a small point, maybe it’s good, in this specific case, not to put so much emphasis, or risk so many livelihoods, on whether one team or another has more points after 60 (or more) minutes. Isn’t it enough to carry bragging rights for a year? To remind friends and enemies alike about your particular joy or particular pain? Why take it further? Do you want it to be like Auburn and Alabama and soon you’re killing off a special tree because you’re a sore loser? Or put another way, The Game is just a game, a single moment at a single time. There’s a lifetime to measure its importance, but there’s also a real life for all of us to lead, one where, if we do those parts right, every single one of us is a true winner.

Woody. Then blame Bo. Then blame them together. At one point deep into his long and stormy tenure, Mr. Hayes was unquestioned, especially in 1968 when his Buckeyes dropped 50 on Michigan. Then Schembechler got hired and, one year later, Michigan stunned an Ohio State side ranked no. 1 and considered one of the greatest college teams of all time. So began what is called the “Ten Year War” which included, among other things, Hayes ripping up a down marker in anger in 1971, hitting a cameraman in anger in 1977 and a whole lot of other anger management issues. Oh, and Bo got angry, too, especially after the edition 50 years ago where the two teams tied, 10-10 (they could tie back then), but Big Ten athletic directors voted to send the Buckeyes to the Rose Bowl. Bo never got over it, and reminded everyone of this the rest of his days. But the way the two sides view themselves can get quite myopic, too. In 2006, the rivals were 1 and 2 in the polls going into their clash in Columbus, and it was a true classic that the Buckeyes won. Every Ohio State partisan thought a national title

organization for securing three significant grants on behalf of the Village of Cazenovia — a Restore New York Communities Initiative grant for the redevelopment of vacant properties, an Environmental Protection Fund grant for improvements to Lakeland Park, and a New York State Department of State’s Local Waterfront Revitalization Program grant for the preliminary engineering design and permitting for the partial removal of the Mill Street dam. “[These] are not just financial milestones but crucial steps towards a brighter

and more sustainable future for Cazenovia,” Houghton said. For more information on CACDA, visit cacda.net. 20|EAST was named the 2023 Chamber Business of the Year. “This person really shows all of us how to be passionate, how to be always constructive, how to be always positive,” said Monforte, when announcing 20|EAST Owner McKenzie Houseman as the award recipi-

ent. “She’s an amazing person. We all love her. . . . Really, Caz Life was her brainchild from the beginning.” “Revitalizing Lincklaen Street” Colleen Prossner, who managed the Catherine Cummings Theatre for 21 years prior to the closing of Cazenovia College, introduced a new Caz Life initiative called “Revitalizing Lincklaen Street.” “As you know, there are a few open stores there, and one of the main attractions on that street happens to be the theChamber l Page 15

Earthstar Designs is their multi-craft business that includes ceramics, functional pottery, garden art, and rhythm beads, which can be used to calm both horse and rider, teach riders to move with their horse, and provide a pleasant sound for warning and cadence while on a trail. The artists use a variety of glaze techniques and decoration to make their pottery and can produce custom items. Their work is available on eBay and Etsy or by emailing earthstardesigns@gmail.com. Penny Hazer of Windswept Hill Clayworks is an amateur potter who creates functional ware inspired by colors and textures found in nature. Hazer owns Windswept Hill Farm, a small backyard horse farm in Cazenovia, and she is a riding member of LCH.

She also noted that the term “foxhunting” is somewhat of a misnomer. In England, foxhunting emerged to help control the fox population on farmlands, as the animals were a significant agricultural pest with no natural predators. In America, however, the fox is not considered the agricultural pest that it is in England. Therefore, the foxhunting practiced by many American hunts, including LCH, would be more accurately described as fox chasing or fox viewing. “This area is home to red fox and grey fox, as well as coyote,” Coughlin said. “The thrill of the sport is to watch and listen to the hounds try to find the scent left by the animals in question and to follow the scent for as long as they can. Upon occasion, one will even be treated to a view of a fox or coyote as they exit the area — sometimes quite nonchalantly. The hounds are trained to try to ignore the scent of animals that are not quarry, primarily deer.” Coughlin also rebutted the idea that only the “landed gentry” participate in foxhunting. “[That misconception] would certainly be negated if one quizzed the riders on their professions,” she said. “Our present membership includes veterinarians, business owners, students, salesmen, office workers, and retirees. All these people, however, share a love of hounds, horses, and nature.” LCH currently has 85 members; 35 have riding privileges, and the remainder are social and honorary members. Riders hunt two days a week during the active hunt season and typically have 15 to 25 horses in the field. The club owns a pack of 25 foxhounds and has two employ-

ees — Huntsman Doug Russell and Kennelman Colt Russell — who live with the dogs at the LCH kennel in Erieville during the hunt season. According to Coughlin, the funds donated to LCH through the “Holidays, Horses, and Hounds” event will go towards supporting the club’s community and educational projects. One such initiative involves helping to maintain trails used by the hunt. “The heart of our territory is the Burlingame area, which encompasses the [Cazenovia Preservation Foundation (CPF)] trail system,” said Coughlin. “The gorgeous carriage trail, which includes ‘The Grand Allee,’ was originally put in place by the Hubbard family of Deer Hill. LCH has since taken over stewardship of those trails and has spread an impressive 800 tons of stone on the carriage trails of Atwell’s Knoll and, more recently, behind Fairchild Hill. To put this into perspective, there are 20 tons in a truckload. While LCH has done all the manual labor, the expense of the stone has been shared by LCH, CPF, and the Lorenzo Driving Competition. LCH continues to have a harmonious relationship with CPF and is appreciative of being invited to continue the traditions set forth by the Hubbard family on the property.” One of the hunt’s most visible community/educational events is the Parade & Blessing of the Hounds. Each September, the LCH pack and horses are blessed on the opening day of the formal season at Lorenzo State Historic Site following a parade through the Village of Cazenovia. To learn more about LCH, visit limestonecreekhunt.org or email limestonecreekhunt@yahoo.com.

About LCH

According to Coughlin, who served as LCH president for 10 years before taking over her current position, the mission of the hunt club has always been to provide the youth and adults of CNY and surrounding communities with education, training, instruction, and opportunities for participation in the traditional art of fox viewing, foxhunting, and related activities. “LCH and its membership have an enduring appreciation for conservation and preservation of the natural landscape and wildlife and a great sense of upholding the traditions of our predecessors on this beautiful land,” Coughlin said.

There is a little group that has gotten together to talk about revitalizing and hopefully bringing the theatre back.” She announced that the group is planning to rent the theatre for the month of April to get shows back in the space. “[The theatre] is such a part of our community,” Prossner said. “It’s bigger than Cazenovia College because we didn’t acquire it until 1968. That opera house has been there since the turn of the century, involved in our community. Our goal is to bring it back bigger and better and in different ways. One thing that I just want you to remember is that arts and culture are the driving forces of tourism.” l

Other announcements

Monforte announced the chamber’s plan to introduce a “Caz Life Day” in the schools next spring, during which every student will wear Caz Life branded apparel. Caz Life t-shirts, hoodies, pet outfits, baby clothes, and more are currently available for purchase through the Caz Life Facebook page. Proceeds go towards supporting community events in Cazenovia. Monforte also announced that Caz Life is planning to set up a curling sheet at Meier’s Creek Brewing Company this win-

It’s going to be a very important part of what we do.”

Holiday events

Giving Tree To kick off the holiday season, the GCACC has partnered with CazCares food pantry and clothing closet to support local families in need through the fifth “Giving Tree” initiative. Giving Trees are positioned at 20|EAST, The Brae Loch Inn, Cazenovia Abroad, the GCACC office, Cazenovia Jewelry, the Cazenovia Public Library & Museum, Community Bank, Miori Martial Arts, and The Brewster Inn. Each tree features ornaments labeled with gift requests from local children of all ages. Customers are encouraged to select an ornament, purchase the listed item, and donate it to help make a holiday wish come true. Unwrapped gifts can be dropped off at Community Bank at 48 Albany St. or at any other Giving Tree location by Dec. 1. Gifts can also be dropped off at Community Bank during the Dec. 1 Christmas Walk while visiting Santa after the tree lighting.

There is also a QR code linked to a CazCares Amazon wish list to allow people to order online and have their gifts sent to Community Bank. All donated items will be delivered to CazCares for distribution to local families.

Jingle & Mingle

Caz Life is bringing the chamber’s traditional Men’s and Ladies’ Nights back to life by introducing “Caz Night Out - Jingle & Mingle” events on Nov. 16 and Dec. 7. On the first night, community members and visitors were invited to stop in the downtown shops from 6 to 8 p.m. to do some holiday shopping, enjoy an adult beverage, get their Caz Life passports stamped, and fill out a wish list to be mailed home to encourage loved ones to shop local. Passports with three stamps earned shoppers a free beverage at the Brae Loch Inn afterparty from 8 to 10 p.m. and the chance to win Caz Bucks raffle prizes and a grand prize Simon Pearce glass Christmas Tree from Cazenovia Jewelry. The second Jingle & Mingle event will follow the same schedule. However, there will be different specials and vendor popups, and the afterparty will be held at The Lincklaen House. s

Christmas Walk Weekend

The GCACC’s 46th Annual Cazenovia Christmas Walk, coordinated by Lori Lewis and Fred Agerter, is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 1. The stage will be set up on Sullivan

Street near Dave’s Diner, and the festivities will kick off at 6 p.m. with Christmas carols and performances by the Cazenovia High School (CHS) Chamber Choir, the CHS String Ensemble, and Allure Dance Studio. Santa Claus, escorted by the Cazenovia Fire Department, will arrive around 7 p.m., just in time for the tree lighting. Non-profits will have booths set up along the sidewalks and the downtown shops will be open before and after the main festivities. The GCACC is extending the Christmas Walk celebration into the weekend this year with additional community events scheduled on Saturday, Dec. 2, and Sunday, Dec. 3. On Dec. 3, Caz Life will introduce its “Sunday Stroll - Brunch, Sip, Shop!” Start off the morning with 10 a.m. brunch and beverages at The Lincklaen House, then take an afternoon stroll along Albany Street and support local shops. Many of the merchants will be offering special holiday deals and promotions. Finish up the afternoon by stopping by the Brae Loch Inn for the Limestone Creek Hunt’s “Holidays, Horses, and Hounds” sale from 1 to 5 p.m. Register for the brunch by Nov. 29. Check the Caz Life calendar for other Christmas Walk Weekend events. For more information on the GCACC, visit cazenovia.com.
