Dems take two Students visit with Weitsman Supervisor Paro re-elected, two Republican councilors are defeated By Russ Tarby Contributing Writer Salina Town Supervisor Nick Paro, a Republican, soundly won his bid for a second term over Conservative Party challenger Stella Penizotto in the Nov. 7 election. Prior to a final count of absentee ballots, Paro had drawn 2,976 votes to Penizotto’s 2,012. Paro’s second term as supervisor will be distinctly different than his first because the five-member town board will consist of two fewer Republicans. During the entirety of Paro’s first term, all five board members belonged to the GOP. On Election Day, however, Democrats Hayley Downs and Leesa Paul prevailed over Republican incumbents in the first and second wards. In the first ward, which includes the village of

Town of Clay Supervisor Damian Ulatowski garnered nearly 59% of the vote as he easily won reelection last week, defeating Dave Capria. Unofficial results had Ulatowski, a Republican, getting 5,846 votes to the Democrat Capria’s 4,100. Three Republicans ran unopposed for the town council positions, with Luella Miller getting 6,851 votes and incumbents Eugene Young and Joseph Bick getting 6,781 and 6,556 respectively. Miller will replace David Hess on the board. Incumbent Jeffrey Schiano will be joined by Anthony Germano as the two town justices. The Republicans ran unopposed, as did town clerk Jill Hageman-Clark.

Last month, the business teachers at Cicero-North Syracuse High School took the students to visit Adam Weitsman at Upstate Shredding. Upstate Shredding-Weitsman Recycling is the East Coast’s largest privately owned scrap metal processor and recycling center. It is one of the largest operations of its kind in the United States. Weitsman is the successful entrepreneur and CEO of the family business, so it comes as no surprise that C-NS business teachers would want to expose their students to such leadership. Weitsman is the type of person who is always striving to support his local community by donating to charities in the area and offering help when he can, including sharing his time and insight with students when he can. Two years ago, Linda Dwyer, a C-NS High School business teacher, mentioned to her peers how it would be interesting for the students to meet Weitsman.

From that initial idea, a visit was eventually arranged at the Elephant and the Dove, one of Weitsman’s Skaneateles restaurants. The guests were treated to lunch and they sat down with Weitsman to conduct and question and answer session. “Adam shared his entrepreneurial journey with the students,” Dwyer said. “He was really honest about his life, the mistakes he had made, and what he did to repair them. He shared what goes into starting a business.” Dwyer knew how valuable that visit was for the students and how it aligned with what they were learning about the entrepreneurial process. “Wouldn’t it be nice to take the students to Upstate Shredding and actually see the process and what happens at the recycling plant,” Dwyer wondered. Weitsman agreed, so students and teachers were off to the Upstate Shredding facility. Students were given a complete tour of the center, along

with another Q&A session with Weitsman. “My husband brought our food truck, Wolf ’s Patio Pizza, down and served everybody pizza. We just made it a fun, a great learning day,” Dwyer said. Weitsman showed students and staff the whole process of how cars and different materials come in and get crushed. The tour included how a car goes up a conveyor belt and gets compressed down to the size of a ball. Students learned about the shredding process separating the different materials and then selling them to other companies who recycle the materials into other products. Students were given much more than their detailed tour of how Upstate Shredding processes scrap metal. “What was incredible was even after the Q&A, Adam took the time to have one-on-one conversations with the students,” Dwyer said. “He is so generous, and this experience was larger than life for the students, packed with information.”

When coaches’ concerns are not about defensive schemes or academic progress reports, but instead about how they can possibly cope with 2,500-mile road trips within their own conference (hello, Cal and Stanford to the ACC), then we’ve messed it up. All we should really care about is Fuwilley trying to build her own legend in Columbia in the shadow of the departed Aliyah Boston, or Paige Bueckers making her long-awaited return to Connecticut, or Kaitlin Clark and her incomparable show in Iowa. The same is true on the men’s side, where Zach Edey is back at Purdue, looking for a 2019 Virginia-type redemption after that whole Fairleigh Dickinson thing a season ago, or where coaches at North Carolina (Hubert Davis) and Kentucky (John Calipari) are facing serious pressure to win, while Hunter Dickinson’s presence at Kansas really delights the folks in Ann Arbor. Even here, though, we see the postseason NIT dropping automatic bids for regular-season conference champi-

Heaven forbid that should ever happen to the more important NCAA dance where Saint Peter’s nearly got to a Final Four, FAU did and San Diego State almost won it all. Regardless of the sport, and regardless of the level at which it is played, it is close to a universal truth that adults in charge always do their best to ruin and spoil the experience for the participants by making it all about themselves and their needs. Not to invoke Frozen in a sports column, but sometimes letting go is the best course of all. True joy and happiness and, yes, even a bit of glory is quite possible if we allow players to show their skills and, by doing so, express their pure joy of competition. Every time.

After the votes were totaled on Election Night, Paro said he was “beyond grateful to be re-elected.” “This campaign year has been one of great personal loss for my family, and it has been exacerbated by an oppositional campaign marked by hostility and negativity,” he said. “Despite that, my family, my team and I have stayed strong and have stood resolutely on the truth and the record that I have worked hard to build as a strong voice for every resident in the town of Salina. We pushed

back against fallacious attacks and stayed focused on what is and always will be the most important thing in every campaign – the people I represent.” Penizotto said she learned much in her first-ever run for office. “The best part of this whole experience is all the amazing people I’ve met along the way,” she wrote on a postelection Facebook post. Will she run again? “Maybe,” she posted, “if needed.”

Esposito created a vibrant mural he designed and painted for the village. In continuing efforts to beautify the village, Mayor Gary Butterfield has had ideas for three or four areas throughout the village for murals. After seeing the mural at the Fish Cove in North Syracuse, the village was told Esposito was the artist who painted it. The village reached out to him after seeking other muralists. According to the village Esposito’s work was reasonably priced and he had a passion as someone with roots in North Syracuse. Liverpool, Downs defeated Jason Recor 1,016 to 809. In the second ward, Paul beat incumbent Matt Cushing 847 to 695. The Republican councilors representing the third and fourth wards – Dan Ciciarelli and David Carnie – faced no opposition. So, with Paro at the helm, Republicans will still enjoy a 3-to-2 majority on the town board. In a post-election letter to the editor, Christopher Shepherd, chairman of town of Salina Democrats, said that Downs and Paul “take their new responsibilities very seriously. I expect that first among those will be providing greater transparency and better, careful listening to Salina’s residents and taxpayers. Haley and Leesa have been meeting many people over the last six months and that message came through

many times.” Recor was defeated after serving his first term as councilor. He had previously served several terms as a village trustee. “I want to thank the voters for letting me represent them,” he said. Although he has no plans to run again for public office, he said he was proud to serve his community as trustee and councilor. “I always looked at it as a volunteer position,” Recor said, “not a career.”

Spirited supervisor race

Paro and Penizotto both waged spirited campaigns. The week before the election Penizotto published a mailer which accused Paro of misbehavior and reported that the supervisor’s former father-in-law has filed a lawsuit against him. For his part, Paro sent a postcard to town voters with a photograph of Penizotto shaking hands with former President Donald Trump.

Lester F. Schmutzler, Jr., 93, passed away peacefully on Oct. 7, 2023, at Iroquois Nursing Home, where he resided for a short time after living a healthy and independent life until his 93rd year. Lester lived his entire life in Camillus, where he and his wife Ann raised their four children: Tom, Susan, Patty and Bill. In addition to his home in Camillus, Lester loved spending time at his camp on Skaneateles Lake. After purchasing the lake property in 1964, Lester made the camp into a special place. Over the years, he built and expanded his lake home, including an impressive stairway to the water and a permanent dock, largely by himself. He took pride in having his family enjoy the camp, and his extensive garden was the envy of his lake neighbors. He took pleasure in fishing and hunting around the Skaneateles property. Lester was a masterful toolmaker who spent 34 years working for Carrier Corporation and then, immediately after leaving Carrier, went to work for Syracuse University, where he worked another 29 years until his retirement at the age of 86. Because of his skill, he was entrusted with the most difficult and intricate projects, and he was looked to as a mentor to younger colleagues. Lester was also known for his magnificent sand castings of objects made of bronze, silver and gold. Lester was predeceased by his wife of 66 years Ann in 2017; his daughter Patricia Schmutzler Geiss in 2007; and his son, William Schmutzler in 2016. Honoring Gobble, gobble veterans our voice

On Nov. 11, we took time to honor those who served as we commemorated Veterans Day. This is a day that, according to the United State Department of Veterans Affairs, truly belongs to all veterans, no matter when or where they served or under what conditions, the day is dedicated to all of those who gave their time in service to their country. In many local communities, flags were flown and ceremonies were held where patriotic songs were sung and the names of those who served were commemorated. Some of these were formal community gatherings, while others were smaller, more intimate gatherings. Some brought many people together while other gatherings were focused on family and friends getting together to honor the veterans in their lives. But no matter what kind of gathering took place or what kind of celebration took place, the focus was on honoring those who served. This is a day that is also dedicated to learning about what it means to serve. Often over the years area schools have welcomed local veterans in the days ahead of Veterans Day, not only to honor them, but to listen to them and learn from them and their experiences and get a better sense of what it truly means to serve your country. The roots of Veterans Day go back to the end of World War I. It was on Nov. 11, 1918 at 11 a.m., the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour, when the armistice with Germany went in to effect. A year later, President Woodrow Wilson reflected on the meaning of the first commemoration of Armistice Day. Wilson said the service of those who fought in the war and of those who gave their lives and those who came back home, helped bring peace and a more just world into being. “Out of this victory there arose new possibilities of political freedom and economic concert,” Wilson said in his address to the country. “The war showed us the strength of great nations acting together for high purposes, and the victory of arms foretells the enduring conquests which can be made in peace when nations act justly and in furtherance of the common interests of men. To us in America the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations.” It was in 1926, at the urging of President Calvin Coolidge that congress adopted a resolution on June 4 to issue annual proclamations calling for the observance of Nov. 11 in honor of veterans. And a congressional act followed in May of 1938 which made Nov. 11 a legal holiday as a day dedicated to the cause of world peace that would be known officially as Armistice Day. It was in 1945, that the idea of Veterans Day as it has come to be known began to take shape. The idea started with World War II veterans who wanted to see the idea of Armistice Day extend to all veterans. A veteran named Raymond Weeks led the effort to make this change and in 1947 he led the first celebration of Veterans Day in Alabama and continued to do so the rest of his life. PresidentDwightD.Eisenhowersignedlegislation into law on May 26, 1954 extending Armistice Day to all veterans and in June of 1954 congress amended the bill to replace Armistice with Veterans. For a century since Woodrow Wilson first commemorated Armistice Day to now, more than 100 years later, it is important that we take this time to thank those who have served and reflect on what their service means to our country.

It’s smoked bird this year. Yeah! This year, as last, we will pack up the car with pies and sundries and head east to Cazenovia to feast on smoked turkey, which, waxing poetic, is the most succulent poultry in the universe. It will be accompanied by mashed potatoes, biscuits, whole cranberry sauce and assorted vegetables made from new and delicious recipes. I know this because I just got off the phone with my daughter, who is hosting the event. She is in charge of the “sides,” which, if our conversation holds true, will be a tour de force of their own. Jack, my son-in-law, is the smoke-master. He will put the final touches on the bird, which he will have brined the day before. There will be a good selection of music playing through his laptop computer as we sample some healthy hors d’oeurves and wine. The healthy part is a relatively new phenomenon associated with my child’s discovery of the same kind of stuff she made fun of as a teenager. The wheel turns. Can you see me smiling? And, speaking of wheels turning, I am remembering other Thanksgivings, some of childhood where the menu was turkey with Pepperidge Farm stuffing, mashed potatoes, peas,

candied yams, which was my mother’s signature dish, sliced jellied cranberry sauce, rolls and home-made mincemeat pie. My grandmother would have made the mincemeat with the green tomatoes left at the end of the summer. We might have, if they were on sale, a Mrs. Smith’s pumpkin pie. My father loved Mrs. Smith’s pies but my mother would not buy a pie, a shameful thing, apparently, unless it was on sale. As the years went by and we followed our fortunes to other climes and my mother moved to Florida, we gathered at my sister’s house in Carmel, which was sort of centrally located for most of the family, for the holiday. It wasn’t really centrally located for us, but since the rest of the family thinks of Marcellus as being near the Rocky Mountains, we were the ones to travel. This was the epoch of weird food, the nation having discovered the combination of canned yams and marshmallows as well as the famous green beanmushroom soup casserole. We still had the jellied cranberry sauce and the candied yams to connect us to past holidays. We would call our mother on Thanksgiving, pretending to have forgotten how to make the yams, so that she could, once again, share the recipe. My sister

also believed in homemade desserts and we feasted on several pies, some with fillings made of packaged faux whipped cream and more marshmallows. With other changes, we were left with Thanksgiving at our house from time to time. The “we” being my spouse and our children. I subscribed to the cloning of my childhood Thanksgiving meal with the racy addition of creamed tiny onions, which I believed made me a gourmet cook. I served this simple meal with my own variation of odd dessert pies that I seemed drawn to copy from women’s magazines that told me Thanksgiving demanded creativity. I think that there is at least one word that describes those pies and it isn’t creativity. You cook and learn. As years went by I added or subtracted from the meal depending on the number at the table. One year, when there were only three of us, I cooked a duck breast stuffed with prunes. It wasn’t the same. There were times when the several parts of our family did not share a Thanksgiving table. Scattered among friends and families connected by marriage, our children had other places to be. So, what did we do? I can tell you, the memory being so strong, that it was

a tossup between football on TV or a movie at one of the movie plexes. Of course, I could cook a traditional Thanksgiving meal, and I did consider that for about two minutes, but I sat down and that thought faded into the place where things like make-your-own shoes and do-it-yourself roofing lie. I remember that I made sandwiches out of deli turkey, cranberry sauce and stove top stuffing. Mrs. Smith came through with one of her smaller pumpkin pies. Eighteen years ago, my daughter offered to take the Thanksgiving scepter from my weakened hands because I was a bit bedraggled after my last chemo treatment. There were five minutes of recrimination on my part. What did this all mean? What did this say about me and my role on earth? I decided that I loved the idea and the meal she served was fabulous. This is a child who, mind you, when she left for college, was astounded to find out that you could make cake frosting from scratch. Things change. I did bring dessert, my favorite part of the meal anyway. No matter what we cook, no matter what we eat, no matter how many gather, this day that we celebrate with the turkey and fixings is really a celebration Gobble l Page 13

SKANEATELES - JORDAN - ELBRIDGE - MARCELLUS - CAMILLUS

has again displays its versatility by creating a delicious Southern staple as its newest appetizer. Taking a page from 1847’s “The Carolina Housewife” cookbook by Sarah Rutledge, the yankee cooks are baking jalapeno corn spoon bread. The dish is described as “a piping hot skillet of jalapeno corn spoon bread drizzled with a local virgin honey and a side of whipped maple butter.” It’s similar to Southern cornbread, but it’s more like a soufflé with a texture like the British Yorkshire pudding. The Retreat’s version is carefully spiced – but not over-spiced – with its namesake jalapeno peppers giving it just the right bite. The moist quick bread is often scooped with a spoon – hence its name. It’s thought to be of Native American origin (where it was called awendaw), and the “spoon” term was first used in Sarah Rutledge’s 1847 book of recipes. Spoon bread became popular around the turn of the 20th century, and has been a mainstay in Virginia and Kentucky kitchens ever since. While The Retreat’s spoon bread is delicious, diners I interviewed there suggested that a bit more honey and maple butter might enhance the appetizer.

Last word

“We have many great people in our town and I’m going to continue to try and bring our town together in any way I can. After all, we aren’t just four wards, we are one town.” – Defeated candidate for Salina town supervisor Stella Penizotto.

Lions Club to host Turkey Trot

To the editor: The Skaneateles Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot began in 1987 when a small group of friends, led by Kevin Cahill, including Jim Gregg, Mark McAllister, Tim McCall, Tom Bersani, Turk Howard, Chip Fesko and Brian Lanning, decided to go out for a pre-turkey run around the village of Skaneateles. For the next 5-10 years this tradition continued, but with more friends of friends, until about 30 or 40 people would show up in front of the Sherwood Inn. There was an explosion of interest in the late 90s with hundreds of runners, many young adults who grew up in Skaneateles, but now live somewhere else, and were home visiting family. An awards ceremony would always take place afterwards at the Sherwood Inn pub with Denny Owen, Sr. providing silly awards to the top three finishers in multiple categories. Denny was always there, from start to finish, wearing a top hat while cheering on the runners and catching up with friends. Twenty years ago, he decided to take off his hat and pass it through the crowd to collect much needed funds for the Skaneateles Ecumenical Food Pantry. He also started the tradition of leading all the runners in the singing “God Bless America” at the start. This tradition has grown to include many top hats passed by many next generation Owen family members. Last year the Lions Club joined the Owen clan and lend its support to this long-standing tradition, by singing, cheering the runners on and helping pass the top hats. And you will see many Lions Club members at the event this

Thanks for your support

To the editor: The volunteers who make up our local Salina Democratic Committee all say a huge “thank you” to our neighbors as two outstanding Democratic women, Haley Downs and Leesa Paul join the Salina Town Board, as a result of last week’s election. Their skill and accomplishments helping others - Haley as an educator and Leesa in social work - will be valuable resources in the months ahead. Our candidates-soon to be our representatives-take their new responsibilities very seriously. I expect that first among those will be providing greater transparency and better, careful listening to Salina’s residents and taxpayers. Haley and Leesa have been meeting many people over the last six months and that message came through many times. It has been a very long two years since Democrat Jim Magnarelli retired from the Salina Town Board. The arrival of these two new Democratic members will bring fresh perspectives and energy to local government. Our attention as the local part of the Democratic Party now turns to re-electing our Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter next year. No one has shown as strong an interest in supporting our schools and libraries as Pam. Just like our Republican counterparts, we will be also be looking over several people who want to become candidates for our open seat in the New York State Senate. Finally, after watching the dysfunction of the GOP’s tiny US House majority last month, we will enthusiastically choose a responsible person to send the non- resident Mr. Williams home to his truffle farm in the Finger Lakes. Finally, a personal opinion about Stella Penizzoto. I was among many people who found her to be sincere, personable, and earnest as she offered a thoughtful alternative in the recent election. She is a Republican, I am not. Yet, we were able to find common ground together and

that is supposed to be a part of how good government at all levels can happen. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all who put themselves forward as candidates. Now, let’s get to work! Chris Shepherd Chair, Salina Democratic Committee

Thanks Van Buren

To the editor: I want to thank the residents of the Town of Van Buren for supporting me in the recent election. It has been my pleasure to serve as your town clerk/receiver of taxes and I will strive to provide outstanding service to you for the next four years. With sincere thanks. Lynn Precourt Town of Van Buren

Pedestrian safety

To the editor: I applaud Ms. Himelfarb’s letter addressing pedestrian safety in respect to proper bright clothing day or night. An inexpensive alternative to a new brightly colored jacket is the light weight mesh zippered safety vests sold at Tractor Supply. They have reflective tape and pockets for keys, tissues, phone or a plastic bag to pick up the litter you see on your walk. I would also like to add that walking on the sidewalk if there is one and, if not, walking on the correct side of the road is of equal importance. I was taught in elementary school (60+ years ago) that one should walk facing traffic. This allows the walker to see oncoming vehicles and take evasive measures if the driver does not see them or is distracted…an all too common occurrence these days. Walkers also bear a responsibility to stay aware of their surroundings, not distracted by looking at their phone or wearing earbuds. With the increase in electric and hybrid vehicles that make no engine noise, this becomes even more important. If you can’t hear approaching vehicles, you should at least be engaged visually. Another caveat: when walking your dog in the road, please keep the animal on your left side, away from traffic. If you’re on the correct (left) side of the road, this keeps your pooch safely away from the oncoming vehicles and also gives them a more stimulating walk, smelling grass and leaves rather that asphalt. CNYSPCA PET OF THE WEEK

Millie needs a home

by Donna Newman photo provided by the CNYSPCA If Millie’s life was a movie, it would be “Back to the Future.” She came to the shelter as a puppy six years ago. She lived the happy life of a beloved dog until her owner passed away, and she found herself back at the shelter. Most of us know how hard it is to lose a pet, but when a pet loses an owner, they can also lose home, family, friends, and everything familiar. Millie has a lot of life to live and a lot of love to give. She’s optimistic and hopes that the next chapter of her life will be a good one. She would do best as the only pet. Silly Millie has cuddles to spare and would make a lovely companion to almost any family. For more information about adoption, call 315-454-4479, email frontdesk1@cnyspca.org, or visit cnyspca.org.

Bobby Knight

To the editor: It was with some bemusement that I read Mr. Blackwell’s opinion piece on Bobby Knight. I was a graduate student at IU for seven years from 19801987 – arguably the heyday of Hoosier basketball. Those were the years of Isaiah Thomas, then later Steve Alford and Keith Smart, and of two national championships. I held season tickets and never missed a home game. There is much to be proud of as a Hoosier fan. I also taught history as a TA to undergraduates taking their required American History classes. As such, I got to see firsthand the positive emphasis that Coach Knight put on education. In this area, Coach Knight had a positive influence. But that is where it ends…. Knight was a bully and basically a first class ******! He could not control his temper; something that ought not facetiously be argued away being a result of a hardscrabble upbringing, or time spent in the armed services. He was mean and incapable – as subsequent events proved over and over – of admitting any sort of guilt or responsibility for his own actions. Mr. Blackwell glosses over these aspects of Knight’s personality with the throwaway statement that “those who loved him…would always do so, and those who hated him…would remain staunchly opposed.” I would argue that there is a middle ground; the one that I hold. While respecting his considerable talents as a coach, it has to be remembered that he was, in many respects, a failure as a human being. Blackwell ends his column with the terse statement “The unforgettable ones tend to leave that kind of mark.” I would offer that there are other “unforgettable ones” who managed to leave a mark as well as Knight (or better), while maintaining their dignity and gentlemanliness. Dean Smith, of course, is foremost among them. Smith had a higher overall win percentage than Knight, won only one less game (but did it in five fewer seasons), and had a record of consecutive 20-win seasons (27) and a string of consecutive Sweet 16 appearances (13) that Knight didn’t approach. His players graduation rate was an astounding 97%! And he did that while being ever the gentleman, beloved by his players and fans; a true father figure to many of them. That is the kind of role model one should hold up in sports and to youth, and not that of the loudmouth bully. Peter Wozniak, Ph.D. Cazenovia

100 Years is a long time… The golf boom in America started around the 1880’s in various parts of the country but nowhere more evident than in New York, Long Island, and in a few cities and towns outside of New York City throughout the state. By 1894, golf was not just a fad around the country. The United States Golf Association (USGA) was formed in 1894 and golf started booming. However, by1920, New York was still one of the few states without it’s own association and Championship. In 1923, Grantland Rice, a highly regarded sports writer at that time, wrote a column in American Golfer magazine stating that NYS should have it’s own state association and championship. After the column was published, Mr. Rice proceeded to call some of the “more prominent” golfers in New York. Invitations were then mailed to 150 golf clubs in New York with the following objective, “To foster closer and more intimate relations in and among the great body of golfers in this state than is now possible”. On August 9th of that year, delegates from around New York met at the Yahnundasis Golf Club in New Hartford, NY and unanimously voted to form the NYSGA. This was clearly 30 years behind the rest of the states. So what is the significance of the year 1923? Of course… The New York Golf Association (NYSGA) is 100 years old. They didn’t look that old on November 4, 2023 at the distinguished Onondaga Golf and Country Club in Fayetteville, NY, but they are. I had the honor and privilege of being invited to this very special Centennial Celebration that evening along with Kathie Dyson, Joe Convertino and about 70 other attendees from all parts of New York State. All I can say is…WOW! Just how “special” was the evening? Well, let’s start out with the keynote speaker. It was non other than Dottie Pepper, currently working for ESPN and CBS Sports as a golf television analyst and reporter. You certainly remember her as a great player on the LPGA Tour which officially began in 1988 when she had seven Top 10 finishes. In 1989 she won her first LPGA Tournament beating Beth Daniel in a five-hole playoff. I watched the entire last round and playoff. I followed her Junior Golf career because she lived in Saratoga Springs, NY, about 9 miles from our home. Dottie went on to win 17 times on the LPGA Tour and it is unfortunate I do not have enough space in this article to list all of her accomplishments and awards but you should know about her legacy as an amateur golfer in New York:

Congratulations to the Centennial SubCommittee including, John Blain, Pete Dougherty, Doug Vergith and Dan Thompson, Director of Marketing and Partnerships for their wisdom in selecting Dottie Pepper as the Keynote Speaker. She did not disappoint. Her heartfelt gratitude aimed at the NYSGA was evident. I “never” use the word perfect, however, her Keynote speech was just about perfect for the occasion. Bill Moore, Executive Director of the NYSGA, has been at the helm for over 20 years. His leadership of the seven full time staff members and four interns has not gone unnoticed around NYS and the country. Bill’s “Top Gun” Asst., Exec. Dir. Andrew Hickey, Dan Thompson, Jack Travers, Asst. Dir. Rules and Competitions, Mark Ackley, Manager Course Rating, Deb Spilman, Manager of Special Events and Operations, Michael Dirkes, Manager, Regional Associations, as well as interns Christopher Bierce, Alexander King, Chrissy Van Allen and Damian Rodriguez rounds out his staff. When you add the name Hank Fust, President of the NYSGA, along with his 5 Officers, 12 members of the Executive Committee and 160 NYSGA Committee Members around the state, you have a very proficient, talented, skilled, competent, and powerful organization that is 30 years younger and certainly better looking than the others. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND CONGRATULATIONS NYSGA!!… MAY YOU ENJOY MANY MORE!!

To the editor: I wish to express my deep appreciation to the voters in the 13th District. I am honored to again have the opportunity to represent the people of Camillus, JordanElbridge and Van Buren in the Onondaga County Legislature. The 13th District is diverse but has much in common. Beautiful countryside, historic villages, dedicated and hardworking village and town public officials serving their residents, many small businesses which are the backbone of their communities, outstanding local police departments, excellent public libraries, veterans organizations, service and fraternal groups, dozens of dedicated fire fighting personnel and first responders, and three of the best schools in Central New York. There is so much to be proud of. The best government is government at the local level and closest to the people and that is the message I will continue to take to the Court House each and every day. Again thank you for all the support during the campaign and on Election Day. Ken Bush Jr. Onondaga County Legislator 13th District

year continuing their support for this great event. It has been a perfect way to start Thanksgiving, by appreciating our friendships, our good fortune, our village, and sharing that with the less fortunate. And, again this year, you don’t need to bring cash to support the food pantry. The Lions Club has created a Venmo account to allow cashless donations. Today, with an estimated 500-700 participants, your generous donations continue to fund the food pantry’s mission. Today, the Turkey Trot is still the best way for former and current Skaneateles residents to reunite over the Thanksgiving holiday. The Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot will once again begin at 9 a.m. in Clift Park across from the Sherwood Inn. Please join your friends and neighbors to run, walk, or just join the celebration! You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. § 1303 NOTICE NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving a copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you can lose your home. Northstars drop sectional final amid turmoil by Phil Blackwell

Everyone on the Cicero-North Syracuse and Christian Brothers Academy football teams knew quite early this season that it would all lead to Sunday night’s Section III Class AA championship game at the JMA Wireless Dome. Yet when it finally happened, the Northstars, undone by unexpected absences and a high-quality opponent, saw its fiveyear reign as sectional champions end in a 34-7 loss to the Brothers. The entire scope of the game changed when word broke Saturday night that the Northstars’ senior quarterback, Jaxon Razmovski, was suspended

and would miss the game based on an incident that took place a couple of days earlier. Razmovski’s family declined to appeal the immediate decision but did mention a possible civil action against the North Syracuse School District as gametime neared. As if this wasn’t enough, Northstars head coach Dave Kline did not attend the game, either, so it was Northstars assistant coaches who were handling all the play-calling and decision-making. It also meant that C-NS entered with far more of a handicap than CBA did in 2022, when injured quarterback Jordan Rae (who had led the Brothers to the 2021 state

first possession and then, from the Brothers’ 39, grabbing the lead when Anthony Johnson, taking his first snap after Marcus Reed started under center, threw deep and found Davine Bennett in single coverage for the TD. From there, though, emotion gave way to allaround excellence from the Brothers. Quentin Lewis returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards. Three plays later, a Porter Matt sideline pass found Damien Williams, who broke two tackles and dashed 26 yards for the tying score. And the Brothers led for good before the first quarter was done, turning a short field into seven

Class A championship) could only watch his side lose to the Northstars. Even if Razmovski was there, the task was daunting enough. C-NS had lost 34-18 when these two had played a month earlier at Bragman Stadium largely due to a tremendous twoway performance from Jamier Handford, who ran for 206 yards, recorded an interception and forced a fumble that led to a touchdown. When C-NS ran onto the Dome turf before the game, Nate Williams led them, holding Razmovski’s no. 10 jersey, a clear sign they were playing for their absent quarterback. Charged up, the Northstars got off to an ideal start, stopping CBA on its

Liverpool, C-NS cross country runs at state meet by Phil Blackwell

A quartet of area cross country runners – three from Liverpool and one from Cicero-North Syracuse – would make their way back to Vernon-Verona-Sherrill one more time in the 2023 season. The occasion was last Saturday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class A championships, where the girls race featured the Warriors’ junior duo of Taylor Page and Kaitlyn Hotaling, along with Northstars eighth-grader Kennedy Jones making her state meet debut. As it turned out, no Section III girls runner would top Page, not even the vaunted FayettevilleManlius group who would have no one faster than a 28th-place finish on their way to third in the team event behind Saratoga Springs and Northport.

sectional Class A meet at VVS a week earlier. Chasing course record-holding Fayetteville-Manlius senior Nolan McGinn, Ruediger was pretty strong, too, eventually making his way to 22 nd place in 16:30.4, nearly equaling Page’s finish in the girls race. McGinn would win the individual state title in 15:48.7, off his course record but still enough to beat Smithtown North’s Douglas Antaky (15:56.0) at the line. Ruediger, along with McGinn and Auburn’s team that finished third, helped Section III to a third-place team finish. Ruediger was second among the sectional All-Stars, ahead of Baldwinsville’s Noah Covert (45 th, 16:58.2) and Ryan Wilson (76 th, 17:30.9) along with Central Square’s Charles Raymond (60 th, 17:06.6).

Page, meanwhile, would traverse the VVS course in 19 minutes, 18.7 seconds, finishing 19 th and, in an impressive manner, improve on her 19:25.9 from the sectional meet on this same course a week earlier. Hotaling ran well, too, getting to 32 nd place in 19:41.4, which also beat her sectional clocking of 19:46.2 as Jones also broke the 20-minute mark, finishing 43 rd in 19:56.6. Section III was fourth in the team event as the All-Stars would see Baldwinsville’s Kamryn Barton gain 30 th place in 19:36 flat and Auburn’s Mary Alice Pineau finish 37 th in 19:46.9. Saratoga Springs’ Emily Bush won the individual state title in 17:34.3. Meanwhile, Liverpool senior Brady Ruediger hoped for a strong finish in the boys state Class A race after finishing third in the

points when Matt’s 22yard pass to Syair Torrence set up Handford scoring from seven yards out. On consecutive possessions, Reed fumbled, giving CBA a chance to seize control. Twice, it got inside the C-NS 20, only to get stopped once on fourth down and settle for a 20-yard Everett Gilchrist field goal on the other attempt. But with 1:21 left in the half, another short Brothers drive led to another TD from Handford, this one from 17 yards out, and CBA went to the break comfortably in front 24-7. A third C-NS turnover came when Zion Green made a diving intercep-

tion at midfield, ultimately setting up a second Gilchrist field goal from 21 yards out, which were the only points of the third quarter. Even with the stops that the Northstars were able to make, along with a Johnson interception, it never got close to the end zone again, stymied by plenty of its own mistakes, large (turnovers) and small (penalties), plus a strong and consistent CBA defense. Isaiah Coleman’s 20yard TD run with 2:35 left sealed an outcome that was settled much earlier. For the first time since 2016, a C-NS season would not conclude with a sectional banner.

C-NS boys volleyball falls in regional final by Phil Blackwell

Right up until the time where it counted most, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys volleyball team was not expected to return to its once-comfortable place atop the area Division I ranks. But when the Northstars swept defending champion Fayetteville-Manlius in the Nov. 4 final at East Syracuse Minoa, it not only avenged three straight losses to the Hornets dating back to the 2022 finals, it gave itself an opportunity to do even more. Exactly one week later at Liverpool High School, C-NS was on hand, meeting Section II’s Shenendehowa in a regional final with a berth in this weekend’s state championships in Albany on the line. Even a familiar setting, though, did not save the Northstars from getting stopped by the Plainsmen in three sets as Shen advanced to this Saturday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association finals in Albany.
