Samuel Anderson, a junior at Liverpool High School, was selected for the High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall in New York City. anderson performed Feb. 10 with the Honors Band Ensemble playing the euphonium. The conductor was T. André Feagin, the director of bands at Central Washington University. The ensemble is limited to the highest-rated young performers from across the world.

Anderson auditioned for the Honors Performance Series and was recently accepted after a review by the Honors Selection Board. Acceptance to the elite group is a direct result of the talent, dedication and achievements demonstrated in their application and audition recording.

Anderson joined performers from across the United States as well as Canada and Europe for a special performance at the world-famous Carnegie Hall, a venue that marks the pinnacle of musical achievement. The final -

ists came together in New York City where they had the opportunity to learn from world-renowned conductors, work with other performers, and get a taste of the Big Apple.

“Being selected to the Honors Performance Series is something each Finalist should be extremely proud of accomplishing,” said Marion Gomez, music director for the Honors Performance Series. “We processed nearly 10,000 nominations this year and have selected the most talented student performers from around the world. Working with these conductors and performing at these renowned music halls is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that these musicians will never forget.”

The Honors Performance Series was created to showcase accomplished individual student performers on an international level by allowing them to study under master conductors and perform in world renowned venues.

March means making time to celebrate women at the Clay Senior Center. Seniors can enjoy four different events this month that focus on empowering women and remembering all they have done throughout history.

A celebration at the Senior Center for Women’s History Month, recognized globally in March, was an idea that came out of discussions with “The Squad,” a group of women who attend poetry classes held regularly at the center.

Chrissy Clancy, senior coordinator at the Clay Senior Center, said the poetry classes gave birth to many discussions about women and how their place in the world has evolved over the years.

“We laughed, we cried, we bonded,” she said. “It got us talking about women’s rights. And there’s so much to delve into there. This idea came out of that. I thought we’d give it a shot.”

Clancy loves coming up with new things to do at the center, and promises there will be something for everyone. All registered seniors in the town of Clay are welcome. The events are free and will be held indoors at the center located at 4941 Rte. 31 in Clay.

The celebration kicks off on Women’s Day, Friday March 8 at 11:30 a.m.

The Syracuse Area Music Awards show was staged Friday, March 8, at the Palace Theater in Eastwood, and the Liverpool High School Marching Band was one of two finalists for the People’s Choice Award for Best Local Academic or Musical Organization.

More than 270,000 People’s Choice ballots were cast in four categories, and when those online ballots were tallied, an Auburn-based organization called Perform 4 Purpose came out on top.

P4P provides local youth opportunities to learn, create, and perform music. Founded by guitarist Jim VanArsdale and his daughter, Jennifer Church, P4P also teaches its participants to give back to the community by performing live music for local charities.

The Liverpool Marching Band is an award-winning member of the New York State Field Band Conference. It is comprised of students from Liverpool High School and Chestnut Hill, Liverpool and Soule Road middle schools.

The band’s director is music educator James Dumas. Its assistant director, Norm Bagley, attended Friday’s award show. Dumas was unable to attend because he was conducting the high school jazz groups at a previously scheduled competition.

The band will be featured at the village’s Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27.

Arrangements were made and the trailer, along with all the material, was dropped off in December so the work could begin.

The construction instructor, Justin Musa, had his class start by removing and replacing the wood that covered the entire 8-by-16 foot trailer.

Next up was the welding instructor, Courtney Wise, who had her class fabricate a set of stairs and the railings that encircled the top of the trailer.

Once the parade trailer was near completion we arranged to have VFW leadership link up with the instructors from BOCES so that many thanks could be given for all their effort and hard work.

The students that completed the work had already graduated from the classroom and were conducting job shadows for future employment.

It was also noted that Morse Manufacturing painted the railings and stairs with a blue powder coat free of charge.

It is very nice to see veterans groups like the VFW reaching out and working with the local community to help assist with much needed repairs.

BOCES has always been instrumental in assisting the community at large with efforts of this nature, and it was apparent by the craftsmanship exhibited during the VFW’s parade trailer makeover.

Clancy shared that the events are not only an opportunity to celebrate women, but they are more about bringing seniors together to make memories.

She hopes the events will be engaging and that the women who attend will leave with new friends.

“Adult friendships at this stage can be hard to make,” Clancy said. “It’s so important to have girlfriends. And you’ll make them here.”

Drowsy driving

We have reached that point in the year, where at least by the standards of the calendar, we are getting close to the official start of spring.

One of those markers is the change over to daylight saving time, which took place Sunday.

While many find this practice some what arcane in this day and age and many of the arguments for keeping the practice in place seem illogical, and there have even been efforts to move away from the annual changes in time and stick to one time year round, for this season anyway we still find ourselves adjusting our clocks, both those in our homes and our internal clocks.

The mornings will be a little darker, though it will be light later into the evening, and our own internal clocks will be adjusting and likely a little drowsy, perhaps even feeling a little jet lagged as we adjust to the time change for a little while anyway.

According to AAA driving while battling the urge to fall asleep is a familiar feeling for many.

However, soon-to-be-published research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reveals the shocking lethality of drowsy driving. And with daylight saving time, the darker mornings and lost hour of sleep could lead to more drowsy drivers, according to AAA.

Previous Foundation research points directly to sleep loss as a key culprit in drowsy driving crashes.

According to the new study these figures are far higher than official government statistics, highlighting the underreported nature of drowsy driving crashes. According to NHTSA, there is agreement across the traffic safety, sleep science, and public health communities that the impact of drowsy driving is underestimated.

The AAA Foundation’s study, based on in-depth crash investigations and national fatal crash data, estimates that drowsy driving is a factor in roughly 10 times as many traffic fatalities as traditional crash data indicates.

Drowsiness impairs drivers in several ways: Reduced alertness making it harder to react quickly to hazards. Just one hour less than the expert-recommended minimum of seven hours of sleep increases a driver’s risk of crashing. Impaired judgment increases the risk of making poor decisions on the road. Sleep deprivation increases a driver’s risk of making many ordinary mistakes, leading to crashes.

Those deprived of sleep by four plus hours have an impairment similar to those over thelegalBAClimit.Hazardousmicrosleeps can cause momentary lapses in consciousness, leading to loss of control of the vehicle and failure to respond to dangers on the road. AAA research has found that drivers often underestimate their self-perception of drowsiness putting themselves and others at risk.

To stay safe as we adjust to the time change AAA recommends getting enough sleep before driving. Aim for at least seven hours of sleep per night.

Travel at times of the day when you are normally awake. Avoid driving when you are tired or sleepy. Take breaks every two hours or 100 miles. Get out of the car, stretch your legs, and get fresh air. Plan and identify safe, comfortable places to take breaks. Don’t wait until you’re already feeling drowsy. Avoid heavy meals before driving. Eating a large meal can make you feel tired and sluggish. Avoid alcohol and drugs. Both can impair your driving ability. Besides harming driving directly, they can also amplify drowsiness. Listen to your body. If you start to feel tired, pull over and take a break. Don’t try to push through it. Travel with an alert passenger and take turns driving. Sharing the driving can help you stay awake and alert. Don’t underestimate the power of a quick nap. A 20- to 30-minute nap can significantly improve your alertness.

AAA also supports the development of vehicle technology that can detect drowsiness and prevent drivers from operating a vehicle when impaired. This technology could help to save lives by preventing drowsy driving crashes.

LiFE’S POEMS

The Marcellus Free Library is encouraging us to share poetry with each other.

Pocket poems, those that can physically fit on a half sheet of paper, to fit into a faux blue jeans pocket … but they will take any length, rhyme or free verse.

Why poetry? It seems that humans and maybe even non-humans are drawn to the wholeness of poetry. Poetry is something beyond the didactic, the descriptive, the authentic, because it is more didactic, more descriptive and more authentic, reaching places where words alone fall short. Poetry engages the listener in mystical ways, evoking a consciousness born of filling in where the words leave off.

“Poem in October” by Dylan Thomas, a poem that had me at its first line, describes the author’s 30th birthday. I first read it while in college, well before I was 30.

It spoke to me powerfully then. It still speaks powerfully now, when 30 is only a vague memory: “And I rose/ In a rainy autumn/ And walked abroad in shower of all my days” - lines packed with so much meaning for anyone, but especially for me. That is how it is with poetry … meanings that are common, transcendent, in the magic of their construction … a special meaning for each of us.

Poetry is not limited to words. Thirty-thousand-year-old cave paintings at Lascaux, Trois Frers and Altamira are thought to be examples of another kind of enchantment known as

sympathetic magic. The ancient artist drew an animal on the cave wall impaled with an arrow conjuring a connection that will lead to a successful hunt. Some theorists believe that in addition to the magical impulse, there are, on those walls, examples of poetry for people without a written language. The depictions of animals can very well be the artist telling us about his totems, those creatures with which he or she shares a soul or they may be a way of sharing their beauty. The handprints alone say, “I was here.”

There are the classical poets, Byron, Keats, Donne, whose long powerful verses have become part of the established metaphor, but today, for most of us, poetry comes with the modern troubadour, the song writer who captures that combination of words that share meanings so common and yet so special that we remember them, own them digitally and memorize without difficulty.

I’m thinking now of the tender song popularized by Bette Midler, The Rose:

Just remember in the winter

Far beneath the bitter snows

Lies the seed that with the sun’s love

In the spring becomes the rose

A pox on the poet who crafts the dense, obscure lines that need reference works to understand. That is not poetry, but a narcissistic weaving of personal pique.

A poem can be like Thomas’s lovely evocative words, “And I saw in the turning so

clearly a child’s/ Forgotten mornings when he walked with his mother/ Through the parables/ Of sunlight/ And the legends of the green chapels”

Or words as silly as Jack Prelutsky’s “Be glad your nose is on your face/not pasted on some other place.” They both reach us all.

There are Saturday-mornings-on-the-creek poetry where a father and his little boys come to throw rocks, for no particular reason and for a most particular reason … a poem of several purposes that the boys will take with them into their future.

There is poetry in the interplay between a mother and her child as she reads a bedtime story and tucks her little ones safely into bed, as she folds away a child’s clothing remembering the sweetness of little hands and hugs and kisses, a table decorated to celebrate a birthday, a good medical report, passing a test, a thoughtful meal for the feted person, the soft purr of a small cat as she sleeps on your lap.

This is how poetry works; it is something beyond literal interpretation.

Finally, here’s a pocket poem in Haiku: Waiting for the snow to melt, the tomato seed to grow that’s more than horticulture.

Ann Ferro is a mother, a grandmother and a retired social studies teacher. While still figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up, she lives in Marcellus with lots of books, a spouse and a large orange cat.

Village parks identified by name; some surprising

As a child in the 1960s, I spent countless days playing sandlot baseball and football at what we called “the triangle park” bordered by Sixth, Balsam and Birch streets. Little did we know that -- decades ago -- the park had been named Heid Park, apparently in honor of Liverpool’s third mayor, Michael Heid who served from 1935 to 1951.

Village Codes Officer Bill Reagan confirmed the names of the village’s seven parks when I visited his office last week as the village hall on Sycamore Street.

Johnson Park namesake

Starting at the village’s southern tip, Washington Park at Cypress and Oswego streets was apparently named in honor of our country’s first president. Johnson Park at the corner of Vine and Oswego streets, was named for salt manufacturer James Johnson who had swampland along the lake drained and the lumber cleaned.

In 1826, he built the Union Building which was located at the site of the park hence the name Johnson Park. The first floor of the building was a school and the second floor a meeting place for the various religious groups.

The gruff-taking Johnson was also credited with building the landmark First Presbyterian Church here in 1863.

Heid & Grandy triangles

Between Washington and Johnson parks sits the trishaped Memorial Park featuring an old World War II cannon. Before it was named Memorial Park after that international conflagration, it had been known as Lamb Park, probably in honor of a prominent village businessman. There’s another triangle park where village tykes such as myself often cavorted at the corner of Tamarack and Park streets, not far from the corner of Tulip and Oswego.

Its official name is Grandy Park, in honor of Liverpool’s fourth mayor, Ray Grandy. Who knew? Ray had been the village’s longest-serving mayor whose eight terms ran from 1951 to 1967. The village’s seventh park is the historic Liverpool Cemetery, bordered by Fifth, Sixth, Tulip and Aspen streets. Power of two go green

While Gwen and Patrick McCarroll entertain as the Power of Two, the Brickhouse will serve an Irish-inspired menu including dishes such as Guinness Irish stew, shepherd’s pie,

Historic Moment: Drug stores

Drug stores, pharmacies, apothecaries are all places where medicines are manufactured and sold. Druggists, pharmacists, and apothecaries are persons who prepare and dispense drugs and medicines.

In the early days of Skaneateles, this type of business, the dispensing of medicines, was done by the doctor. Dr. John Snook and his son, John Jr. established a retail drug business in 1834. The business was located at (now) 62 E. Genesee St. now AristroCats & Dogs.

Snook sold the business to L.T. Bentley in 1860, who sold the business to H. E. Moore. In 1863 it was purchased by E. F. Barrow. In 1868 it was purchased by E. B. Stocking. The next owner was O. F. Sherwood in 1870. He moved the store to about 18-20 E. Genesee St. now the location of White & White Antiques.

In the 1870s, Dr. Charles Merrill, a rather large man, would walk the three miles into the village. He lived in the country. Dr. Merrill never carried a medicine bag. Although there were no pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer or Merck back then, he was not without medicines.

He often gathered herbs along his walk into the village. He would stop at an apothecary and pick up a number of two to four ounce vials. He would partially fill them with a simple syrup then searching among the shelves, he would put a safe drug and herb into the vials.

Some would be augmented with a coloring matter. When he was finished, he would place all the vials in the side pockets of his coarse cloth coat. He was now ready to meet his patients. He was best known for treating nervous disorders, most of whom he felt were suffering from imaginary complaints. If a patient approached him on the street, and told of all their distressful symptoms, Dr. Merrill would search his pockets for a suitable medicine. He would uncork the vial, sniff its contents until a correct one was found. This he gave to the patient, with exact directions on how to take it. Also instructing that no liquor, beer or strong coffee be taken along with the medicine.

In 1872, the drug store ownerships kept on changing. Sherwood sold the business to Lagrange H. Hollon who in 1874 turned the business over to his brother Henry who continued to operate it until 1912. The December, 1876 newspaper display ad called “Hollon

THE DRUGGIST.”

It also stated “pure drugs and medicines.” They also sold “nice confectionery,” “anything in the line of fancy goods,” “nice stationery.”

The ad also listed “pure wines and liquorsfor medicinal use only.”

A 1907 story in The Skaneateles Press states “H.W.Hollon will pay back your money if Pepsikola fails to cure your indigestion. Never in the history of this store, remarked the druggist to an interested customer, has there been so great a demand for a new remedy as there is just now for Pepsikola Tablets....Try it for ten days and if you don’t see a big improvement, step in and tell H.W. Hollon and he will hand you back your quarter cheerfully and without argument.”

An August 1912 story in the newspaper states that Henry Hollon who has conducted the old established drug store business in this village for the past two score years has sold out his business to Walter H. Patten of New York, who will take possession Sept. 1.

This store was back at what is now 62 E. Genesee St.

It is known to be one of the first stores to have a soda fountain. In 1926 Allie Hoffman purchased the business and moved it to the Hunt Block. 3 W. Genesee St.

In 1939, L. Bernard Davey, bought the Sherwood Pharmacy. In 1962 Davey purchased the Hoffman store. He combined the two stores in the Hunt Block at 3 W. Genesee St.

In 1963 a fire partially destroyed the Hunt block. This put Davey out of business for a few months. He moved into the basement of the Grange Hall. This building faced on

In 1965 he moved into the Schultz building on Jordan Street. (This is the present Town Office building.) Davey stayed there for seven years, until his retirement. In 1972 Davey Drug Store merged with the new Skaneateles Pharmacy.

This store was built in 1965 in a long vacant open space next to the four story Tucker Hardware building (now Fleur-de-Lis) at 24 E. Genesee St. (now Snow & Rose). This store closed in 1983 and moved into the Bridge Market Building at 14-18 W. Genesee (Valentine’s Pizza).

In 1870 Warren Wallace purchased and opened a combination grocery and drug store from local physician Dr. G. T. Campbell. His ads stated he was a dealer in medicines, paints, “oils, dye stuffs, tobacco, perfumery, snuffs, cigars, window shades. Cosmetics, and that prescriptions are carefully compounded and put up.”

Harry Wallace joined his father in 1910, separated the two businesses and took care of the drug portion. George Hahn, an Auburn pharmacist, partnered with Wallace to form Wallace-Hahn. It was located in the building of the former Riddler’s at 4 Jordan Street. (now The Local Branch). In 1908 it became a Rexall franchise store. It moved in 1913, to 36 E. Genesee St., now Drooz.

In 1940 Chester Hahn joined George Hahn to form Hahn’s Pharmacy. From 1946 to 1951 they had a soda fountain in the rear of the store, in front of a large window overlooking the Lake. In 1959 George Hahn was honored by the Rexall Company as one of the longest Rexall franchises. 1971 the business was sold to Richard Hahn and William Dwyer. Jan. 15, 1965 Hahn’s closed.

Jan. 16, 1985, Brooks Drugs, a New England based chain of 450 stores, opened a store at 27 Fennell St., (now the CVS) next to the former P&C Food store. They bought out Hahn’s and transferred all business and prescriptions to this new store. Both pharmacists from Hahn’s, William Dwyer and Richard Hahn worked for Brooks.

CVS took over the space from Brooks. In 2004 they asked to expand the store by about 1,000 square feet. They originally wanted to demolish the, the former P&C, and a True Value Hardware to build a new larger store on the site.

However, building’s owners, the Feldmans, had made other arrangements with Kinney Drugs.

There was concern that the village could support two competing, side-by-side drug stores. Directly across the street was The P & C Food and Pharmacy store. They had a small pharmacy in the store. In 2010, when Top’s Friendly Markets bought out the P & C, the pharmacy closed.

in a June 25 primary to run against Paro for a chance to serve in the state senate.

Last word

“Corrections officers and deputy sheriffs dedicate themselves every day to safety and justice in our community, and it is high time we push back on the disastrous policies that impede and endanger their work.”

This love was woven into every aspect of her life as she volunteered her time, service and skills to her parishes as well

new clothing lines, Sensitive and Brains on Fire. It wasn’t until his residence in Skaneateles did his art transition from silkscreen and fashion to brush and canvas. Over the past few years Matt was developing his painting style and selling his artwork online.

Anyone who knew Matt knew that art was the cornerstone of his life, he could be content with a napkin and a black sharpie. He will be missed, he left an impression on all of us, but his art will live on.

The family hopes to put on a memorial art show for Matt in the future. We will post more information when we have it. RIP Sparky.

Off season focus for the 2024 golf season

For example, Timothy Gallwey is now 86 years old. In the 1970’s, he started writing a series of books about a methodology for coaching and the development of personal and professional excellence in a variety of elds including golf, tennis, music, work and skiing. In his book, e Inner Game of Golf, Mr. Galley’s thoughts were focused on the optimal golf experience being one that should have an “equal balance between Learning, Performance and Enjoyment”. Brilliant, simply genius. In “7” words, Mr. Galley has put the game of “Life & Golf” in one little neat package that gives us a roadmap to Knowledge, Success and Pride. WOW! Andy Hayes, Senior Golf Coach at e Golf Practice, also adds his “two cents”.

Learning…What Does Golf Teach Us?

Golf is a great teacher but we have to pay attention. We can learn things about ourselves through golf if we notice them.

* How our mindset changes when things are good or bad.

* How we respond to pressure.

* How we respond when something feels too easy.

* How we respond when something feels di cult.

* e di erence in how you treat people when playing good vs playing bad.

* Why do you really play golf?

Performance…Does the Score Always Re ect Performance?

Ways to describe our performance in addition to our score.

* I controlled my ball.

* I battled back.

* I crumbled down the stretch.

* I let the conditions distract me.

* I had too many swing thoughts.

Enjoyment…Do Golfers Connect Enjoyment to Scoring?

ere is more out there to enjoy when you separate the two.

* e Feeling of a Well Struck Shot.

* e surprises.

* e miracles.

* e lucky breaks.

* e ight of the ball in the air.

* e sound of an iron shot.

LEARNING…PERFORMANCE… ENJOYMENT

Mr. Gallwey got it right! “If you can focus about having a balance of Learning, Performance and Enjoyment, you’ll nd more in each category…whenever you play”. erefore, instead of describing your round as…”87…couldn’t putt”. You could answer…”I really controlled my ball ight on the front 9, but then as the pressure increased in the match, I couldn’t make any putts. I hit a 7 iron on #6 that was so pure, it felt like I hit a marshmallow and it never le the stick. I learned that I need to stop letting my mind dri to the future as I added up my score in the middle of the round because it distracts me and I need to practice my putting”.

LEARNING, PERFORMANCE AND ENJOYMENT = KNOWLEDGE, SUCCESS AND PRIDE!

ank you Timothy Gallwey…you nailed it over 50 years ago.

Liverpool girls reach state final four again

What it all came down to for the Liverpool girls basketball team was the simple notion of playing at its highest level when it was absolutely required.

By doing so, the Warriors defeated Colonie 53-47 last Saturday at SRC Arena, won the Class AAA regional championship and earned its second consecutive trip to the state final four.

Trailing midway through the fourth quarter after once holding a 14-point lead, Liverpool changed up – and cranked up – its defense, that energy translating into clutch baskets on the other end.

“They were not going to lose this game,” said head coach Mike Wheeler.

“We just had to push through,” said

A’briyah Cunningham, who led the Warriors with 20 points.

The late run began with the Warriors down 43-40. Cunningham, rushing shots and rarely getting open otherwise against a Raiders defense designed to stop her, had gone scoreless in the second half following a 13-point effort in the first half.

Then Cunningham turned it around – on the defensive side, garnering backto-back steals that led to a basket and free throw that tied the game, 43-43.

It didn’t stop there. Liverpool switched out of its 1-3-1 zone to a full-court press.

Mia Berthoff, in for defensive reasons, took a well-timed charge and, on Colonie’s next possession, it could not cross midcourt, a 10-second violation.

With 1:52 left, Cunningham hit a driv-

ing layup, her seventh consecutive point to put the Warriors ahead for good. “We had to play defense in order to get our points,” said Cunningham. The press caused another turnover, and Angie Kohler hit a tough jump shot from the left baseline to make it 47-43.

Colonie hit a basket to cut it to two, but with less than a minute to play Gracie Sleeth hit what Wheeler called “the biggest 3-pointer of her life” from the right, making it 50-45.

Three free throws by Kaylyn Sweeney sealed a victory that, at least at the outset, didn’t look like it would be so stressful.

An 18-2 run bridging the first and second quarters saw Liverpool hold the Raiders without a field goal for more than six minutes, and even some off-balance shots

by Cunningham and Gianna Washington managed to go in.

All of that changed in the third quarter. Colonie, having cut the margin to 29-20 by halftime, confused Liverpool, continued to force bad shots while, on the other end, it used a 14-4 run to go out in front.

Just in time, though, the Warriors returned to the strong all-around play that has now produced back-to-back sectional and regional titles, with the hope, said Wheeler, that winning a game in this fashion might lead to even more success in games with higher stakes.

On Saturday at 9 a.m. at Troy’s Hudson Valley Community College, Liverpool faces Section VI champion Lancaster in the state semifinals, with the winner to advance to the title game Sunday at 10 a.m.

Liverpool boys basketball falls in regionals

Warriors finish season with a 21-3 record

All that stood between the Liverpool boys basketball team and another state final four appearance was the same opponent it beat to get there a year ago –one that, as it turned out, would not let the Warriors get back to Glens Falls.

Albany’s Green Tech reversed what happened in 2023, prevailing 55-49 in last Saturday’s hardfought Class AAA regional final at Troy’s Hudson Valley Commu-

nity College. These same teams had met in this same round in Class AA at SRC Arena 12 months ago, a game controlled by Liverpool, who won that time 65-49. Every single Green Tech player that returned remembered this and brought plenty of hunger to the rematch.

By now, Liverpool’s winning formula, both in the regular season and post-season, was well-established – play consistent, relentless defense and get the opponent out of its rhythm while, on the other end, find a way to get the baskets it needs.

None of this changed against the Eagles, which was the good

part. The bad part was that, given every opportunity to take advantage of Green Tech’s serious foul trouble, it could not quite do so.

Physical play forced two Eagles starters to exit with three fouls by the end of the first quarter and two more to get their third fouls in the second period. Yet Liverpool still found itself exchanging the lead and, even when it did go in front, was unable to get away, only up 24-22 at the break.’

Neither side could manage a sustained run, so when Indavier Barnes hit a 3-pointer and extended the Eagles’ lead to 3127 midway through the period,

Liverpool needed a time-out to regroup. The foul issues continued, but now it was the Warriors getting whistles and Green Tech converting. They went to the final period even at 37-37, a game that had already seen 13 lead changes and five ties. And the tension continued to build. The Warriors fell behind 41-37, rallied with four straight points to tie it, only to have Green Tech again go in front on a 3-pointer, this time by Ramere Brown.

Having already struggled so much to generate baskets, Liverpool went cold again, and the Eagles got clear, with Barnes’ 3-pointer that made it 53-45 in

Stay away from mock madness

AOkay then, try to use a different metaphor.

Or just skip the metaphors and understand that we are entering a period of hype, misinformation, misdirection, and noise so cacophonous that it’s impossible to avoid yet still serves no real purpose.

Welcome to the season of the mock.

I’m not talking about anything real. Unfortunately in sports, reality is too difficult and complicated for some to grasp, so they run to the alternative, imaginatively carving out a very profitable niche out of absolutely nothing.

It comes in two forms.

One is in college basketball, where two big, exciting and memorable tournaments are about to tip off, but not before we’re inundated with endless reminders of who

is in and out of these fields from people who, notably, are not on the actual committees making the actual selections.

Far worse is the lead-up to the NFL Draft, because heaven forbid you go an entire day without 10 different people offering 10 different versions of a draft still weeks (and several trades) away and, again, none of these people are making the actual decisions.

You see, it’s quite easy to put out multiple renditions of the same bracket or draft because, hey, no one’s going to take your job if you’re off target – in fact, you get elevated to the title “Bracketologist” or “Draft Expert”, more important than the people whose lives, futures and careers you are assessing.

Guess who doesn’t get that luxury? Basketball coaches whose employment might depend on whether the initials associated with their season are NCAA or NIT, or NFL

THROUGH

general managers who have no time to theorize about 20 different trades or selections, especially since, if one of them goes wrong, they could get canned.

Besides, it’s always delicious to see people loudly proclaim their distaste for the decisions rendered, only to find out that, hey, maybe the guys knew what they were doing all along.

A clear example of this was 2011. When the NCAA dance card went from 65 to 68 teams, a lot of disdain was thrown the way of Virginia Commonwealth University for having the temerity to take one of the last spots in the field instead of some meddling team that just went .500 in their power conference. Then the Rams got to the Final Four.

More recently, there was the lead-up to the 2023 NFL Draft and the utter conviction of many that Bryce Young was can’t-miss and C.J. Stroud was a gamble, simply

based on perceptions and test scores and other trivial matters.

One season in, Stroud has proven far better, having turned the bottom-feeding Houston Texans into a division champion and playoff winner.

No matter how many times this happens, though, we never learn the lesson. We never step back, take a breath and realize that good choices are not based on the amount of attention they might get.

When, on Sunday, the NCAA fields are announced, two things will happen. One, the bracket nuts will crow about how many they got right, as if the tournament is about them. Spoiler alert – it isn’t. Then we’ll go right to predictions, made with absolute certainty by people who ought to know better. Seth Davis was certain Montana would beat Syracuse in 2013 and loudly announced it the moment the bracket went up.

the final minute proving to be the clincher.

Jeff Manuel and Kaelem Haskins accounted for most of the offense, Manuel getting 17 points and Haskins earning 16 points. Alex Trombley managed nine points and Freddie Fowler got all six of his points at the freethrow line before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.

Liverpool completed its season at 21-3. Head coach Ryan Blackwell said this was his favorite team to coach, even ahead of the 2018 state championship squad, and it will see Manuel, Haskins and Owen Michaud graduate, with Fowler, Trombley and Danny Dunn set to return for 2024-25.

Random Thoughts

A few days alter...Final Fourbound Orange 81, Grizzlies 34. Genius.

Fast forward a month, and the mock NFL Draft boards will continue to pile up, even as trades happen all the way up to the moment of selections, rendering most, if not all, of those projections moot.

Worse yet is the instant grades. For the love of all things holy, can we refrain ourselves from assessing how teams do with their picks until these guys, you know, actually play a down? It’s like grading a test before anyone’s taken it.

Pick your analogy, whether it’s skipping ahead in a book until the final chapter or fast-forwarding a movie to the last 10 minutes.

In sports, the journey is where the richest stories are told and deepest lessons are learned – a fact that you can’t fake, or mock.
