Tapio Wirkkala Park

T

he new, urban art park named after the late Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala is a striking landmark of the Arabianranta district.

Designed by celebrated American artist Robert Wilson the park is located in the heart of the district between the housing and the historic Arabia ceramics factory.

Wilson considers interaction with young artists to be especially important. This is why the concept of the park was also in Helsinki realised in collaboration with students of the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. In the future the park will also serve as an outdoor gallery space for young artists.

Atmospheric and cosy meeting point Arabianranta - a district of There are nine rooms in the park, in which art and design private and public go side by side. The entrance to the urban park is through high gates and its square-like center consists of the nine rooms fenced by vegetation.

Inside the rooms one finds various interesting elements such as stones of different sizes and shapes, benches, gates, sculptures of horses and a fire place. Wilson himself, as a renowned scenographer, calls the park a work of �permanent performance�.

The new park also features works by young sculpture students that engage in dialogue with the park’s own pieces.

Art and design have been important components in shaping the identity of the Arabianranta district, which has also made it a popular travel destination.

This unique international public art project was realised jointly by the Aalto University, the Helsinki Art Museum, the Planning Department, Public Works Department, Economic and Planning Centre and Stara service provider of the City of Helsinki.

The park is situated at the address: Arabiankatu 13, Arabianranta, Helsinki.

The English Language Have you ever wondered why foreigners have trouble with the English Language?

E

nglish is a strange language. There is no egg in the eggplant, no ham in the hamburger. And neither pine nor apple in the pineapple. English muffins were not invented in England, French fries were not invented in France.

We sometimes take English for granted, but if we examine its paradoxes we find that quicksand takes you down slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

If writers write, how come fingers don’t fing, if the plural of tooth is teeth shouldn’t the plural of phone booth be phone beeth and if the teacher taught, why didn’t the preacher praught. If a vegetarian eats vegetables what the heck does a humanitarian eat!?

Why do people recite at a play yet play at a recital? Park on driveways and drive on parkways.

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language where a house can burn up as it burns down and in which you fill in a form by filling it out and a bell is only heard once it goes!

English was invented by people, not computers and it reflects the creativity of the human race (which of course isn’t a race at all).

That is why When the stars are out they are visible but when the lights are out they are invisible and why it is that when I wind up my watch It starts but when I wind up this observation, it ends.

Успенски Собор ченика Александра Хотовицкого (1872-1937), бывшим настоятелем Гельсингфорсского (Хельсинкского) прихода с 1914 по 1917 г. Собор установлен на склоне холма, на полуострове Катаянокка с видом на город. На оборотной стороне собора, есть мемориальная доска русского императора Александра II, который правил великим княжеством Финляндским в ходе строительства собора. Успенский собор претендует на роль крупнейшей Православной Церкви в Западной Европе, хотя Финляндия, как правило, включена в Северную Европу. В 2006 году около 516 500 туристов посетили церковь. Вход в собор бесплатный. В зимний период собор закрыт по понедельникам.

Его название происходит от русского слова - которое обозначает Успение. Проект церкви разработан Алексеем Горностаевым, который стилизован и имеет отношение к старой церкви, построенной в 16 веке под Москвой в России. Кирпичи были привезены из Бомарсунда- крепости на Аландских островах, уничтоженной во время Крымской войны в 1854 году. Его венчают 13 главок - одна большая над шатром и 12 маленьких, делая живописным силуэт собора и указывая на Христа и Апостолов. Среди 12 глав... возвышается обширный купол с позлащенною через огонь главою, венчающею всю церковь. Часовня собора носит имя священному-

Собор имеет несколько ценных икон, а.о. Св. Николай - чудотворец, который был похищен 16 августа 2007 года среди бела дня, когда сотни туристов посещали собор. Икона 19 века и представляет собой редкую разновидность. Первоначально это был подарок православному собору Выборга, откуда икона была переведена в Хельсинки, во время Второй мировой войны. Не известны подробности происхождения иконы. Икона, будучи 45 х 35 см, была помещена в премиум (стекло, покрытое защитой) и весила пару килограммов. Была положена на аналой. Икона сейчас где-то в Ирландии, за рубежом.

Restaurant Sea Horse

T

he restaurant, opened in 1934, has since served for it´s customers with Finnish food and atmosphere. The spirit of the restaurant is created, with a little help from the personnel, by its particular clientele. In the 1990’s, magazine publisher and editor Tyler Brûlé wrote about the restaurant’s onion steak, the Beef Steak à la Sea Horse, in his internationally published magazine. The restaurant gained worldwide renown, and its own star dish had been born. Restaurant Sea Horse has served Finnish delicacies, such as crispy fried baltic herrings, vorschmack, herring plates and Wiener schnitzels, for as long as 80 years. It’s safe to say that Sea Horse is a part of Finnish restaurant history, perhaps already somewhat of an institution.

Over the years many stories have been told about the origin of the legendary sea horse mural covering the back wall of the restaurant. It took decades before the truth about the sea horses was finally revealed. One of the legends was very close to the truth: the sea horses were painted by two young art students. Today the sea horses are known around the world from the pages of different magazines and guidebooks. They have even been depicted in theatre sets abroad, and are the

restaurant’s unique trade mark.

The restaurant’s liberality and functionality as well as it’s capability to offer enjoyment to customers from all different walks of life generations, social layers, nationalities and areas of interest - have been noted around the world. Articles have been written, in different languages, from right to left and top to bottom. This can also be seen in the restaurant’s clientele. Delighted squeals heard in the dining room over a large bowl of salmon soup are more of a custom than a curiosity. It has been said that the restaurant holds a small town under its roof.

Facts Established in 1934, the restaurant has operated ever since on the exact same location under the same name and concept. Offers its customers Finnish straightforward homemade food.

Helsinki: The town of Helsinki was founded by decree of King Gustavus Vasa of Sweden in 1550 as a new trading post in southern Finland. Moose: In rural areas, drivers should keep an eye out when driving at night as moose sometimes wander onto the roads.

Traffic Signals: Signals tend to be thoroughly respected. It is not unusual to be stuck at a light at 3am, with pedestrians that will not cross, even though the streets are empty.

Food: Finnish food is inspired by Sweden, France, and Russia, and includes basics like fresh salmon and smoked reindeer steak. An interesting local drink is the tart cloudberry wine.

Tipping: It is usually not necessary to tip, as a service charge is included in the bill for hotels, restaurants and other services. Exceptions are normally specified.

Fortress Situated on a group of islands off Helsinki, Suomenlinna was built during the Swedish era as a maritime fortress and a base for the Archipelago Fleet. Work on the fortress was begun in the mid-18th century. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Finland’s most popular tourist attractions. Suomenlinna is also a district of the city of Helsinki, with a permanent population of more than 800.

Built on a cluster of rocky skerries, the fortress consists of an irregular network of bastions. During the Russian era, the fortress was extended both towards the sea and on the mainland.

Suomenlinna has played a key role in many turning points in Finland’s history. It has been the property of three sovereign states. The majority of its buildings date from the late 18th century, the end of the Swedish era. From the early 19th century to the early 20th century, Suomenlinna – then known as Viapori – was part of Russia along with the rest of Finland. Russian-era Viapori was a lively garrison town. After Finland gained her independence, Suomenlinna became home to a coastal artillery regiment, a submarine base and the Valmet shipyard, where ships were built af-

Suomenlinna is the property of the Finnish government and is managed by the Governing Body of Suomenlinna, an agency subordinate to the Ministry of Education and Culture.

The fortress was handed over to civilian administration by the military in 1973 with the exception of Pikku Mustasaari island, where the Naval Academy is still located. The Finnish customs authorities have an office on the islands, and Suomenlinna also houses the Helsinki open prison. A substantial part of the repairs to the walls, ramparts and buildings are carried out by convicts.

The old buildings are still in everyday use as housing, working space, maintenance facilities and visitor service facilities. There is a continuous building repair programme going on. The restoration of fortifications and old buildings requires considerable expertise. The 18th-century dry dock on Susisaari island is still used as a winter storage and repair facility for old wooden sailboats.

There are dozens of historical underwater sites around the fortress.

The natural environment on Suomenlinna is a mixture of indigenous Finnish archipelago ecosystems and centuries of horticulture.

Many migratory birds stop on Suomenlinna, and several species of birds such as barnacle geese and swans nest on the islands.

Cycling in Helsinki

he breeze ruffles your shirt as you speed along the “Baana” through the city centre from Kiasma to Ruoholahti. Built along a stretch of disused railway line, Baana is a pedestrian and cycling corridor that is equally popular among commuters on bike, dog owners on foot and young people on skateboards.

Along the way you can stop and play table tennis or grab a soft drink from a container café. At the far end of Baana in the district of Ruoholahti you will find the Länsisatama “West Harbour”, the new residential dwellings in Jätkänsaari and the buzzing market at Hietalahti.

Baana forms part of a 1200-kilometre network of bike paths in Helsinki that makes it easy to access all parts of the city on two wheels, from the Keskuspuisto “Central Park” to the north to the ferry harbours to the south, and from the bustling city centre to the quiet fields and forests in the surrounding countryside – even to the islands of the archipelago.

The route also takes you past Sibelius Park, where you will find the famous organ-like monument to the legendary composer designed by Eila Hiltunen. Next to the park, down by the sea, is the cosy Café Regatta, where you can enjoy snacks and refreshments. You can even rent a stand-up paddle board there if the mood takes you! Before returning to the city centre you can enjoy a well-earned dip in the sea at the popular Hietaniemi beach.

s you can probably guess, the cheapest bars are not in the city centre. There are exceptions, but on the whole the most affordable bars near the city centre can be found in the Kallio district. Suitable alternatives can be found along Vaasankatu street, which begins from the Sörnäinen metro station, or along Porthaninkatu and Kolmas Linja in the southern parts of Kallio. The bohemian bar culture has recently begun to spread from there towards the district of Vallila.

estaurant Bihani is a fairly new Nepalese restaurant in Helsinki. We also have a restaurant in Nummela, Vihti. We pride ourselves in serving high quality food and our customers have given us excellent reviews. We serve vegetarian, chicken and lamb dishes as well as seafood.

We serve wines from around the world and Nepalese beer as well. All our meals are prepared on the spot and served sizzling hot. Our customer service is a product of Nepalese culture itself. Our meals are available for take away as well.
