“Genius in Nature” Through this innovative concept architecture design, The Singapore School of the Impaired Hearing transcends conventional education. It has transformed into a sanctuary where students are enveloped in a supportive and enriching environment. This holistic approach to learning empowers the students to overcome challenges, discover their potential, and emerge as individuals who can thrive within the context of their unique needs and the broader world around them

Genius in Nature (Pitcher Pant)

DESIGN CONCEPT The Singapore School of the Impaired Hearing, which is located at the southern entrance to Coney Island, With a aim and goal towards aiding and help those who use hearing aids learn in a more relaxed and stress-free way through the use of colours and gradients that they can see and relate to better to.

Our very nature is merged and fused with the school's architecture as well as the students themselves thanks to its creative design, which was influenced by pitcher plants of the nepenthes family. Through the activities and programs the school offers that are based on the behaviour of the pitcher plant itself, these students set out on a journey within the school to learn more about the environment and how to be able to live a more self-sustainable lifestyle, giving rise to the schools motto (Grow, Harvest, Cook, Eat).

The Nepenthes Family, commonly known as tropical pitcher plants or monkey cups, is a fascinating group of carnivorous plants characterized by their unique pitcher-shaped traps. These plants belong to the genus Nepenthes and are primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions, such as Southeast Asia, Madagascar, and Australia.

“ The Villager” Persona: Shophouse Owner Store Type: Eatery and Fruit Store Store Operating Hours: 8am9:30pm Other Details • Shophouse owner lives upstairs at level 2 • Shop owner helps out at the store on a daily basis • When the store is closed, most items that are placed outside will be moved into the store

Concept Statement Sunrise and its time for work, dear shop-owner gets out of bed and gets ready for a long day at his shop. Walks out through the floating balcony and descends down the stairs to his shop, When summoned, elements of the shophouse slowly come to light, allowing daily activities and movements to happen.

Elements hide on the darkness when not needed but always coming into the light to bring convenience to their owner, lending him a shoulder to lean on whenever he feels tired and always having his back, After a long day of work, it was finally time for both the shop-owner and the shophouse to take a break. The elements vanished back into the darkness where they originally came from and stairs float down to the shophouse awaiting for its owner to be done so that it could bring him home. Never letting him down.

Curtain Wall + Louvres Louvers keep a space efficiently ventilated, allowing stale air out and fresh air in. This is particularly important for Singapore when stale air can get not only stuffy but also hot, making working and living conditions really unpleasant if you don't have good ventilation in place.

With the added green panels to the louvres, it now adds the functions of purifying the air, reduces the ambient temperature, regulates the indoor temperature and saves energy

Prototype The design of structure is inspired by traditional kampung houses. The large triangular frame at the entrance is used to support the kampung house motif.

Green Building Design

We are proposing a design for the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) building. It will be a netzero energy building which minimises resource consumption for heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, and water supply or waste, while providing thermal comfort and control capabilities to occupants. It will utilise on-site renewable energy resources to produce more energy than the building uses. It will help to integrate a new building into an existing campus context through the use of natural materials and connections to site landscape features.

The LRC school educational mission is to encourage students to connect with and learn from the natural environment around them. As a result, the campus forms a self-contained area that supports habitats for local flora and fauna within a beautiful natural setting. The site is bounded by the sea on the north with an open uphill to the southwest and east. The school is organised into smaller buildings with various educational functions. The LRC building houses art studios, classrooms, laboratories and a library. The elevation change across the site allows the building to be vertically zoned according to occupant uses.

Sustainable Site Design: • Incorporate green spaces, rain gardens, and permeable surfaces to manage stormwater runoff and enhance the overall site's sustainability.

•Utilise natural landscaping techniques that require minimal irrigation and maintenance, contributing to water conservation efforts.

•Consider creating outdoor learning spaces and recreational areas to promote an interactive and engaging educational experience while utilising the natural surroundings.

Net Zero Energy Strategies: •Implement photovoltaic solar panels on the roof or in a solar farm on the site to generate renewable electricity and achieve net-zero energy consumption.

•Optimise energy-efficient building systems, such as LED lighting, high-performance insulation, and energy-recovery ventilation.

•Explore opportunities for energy storage, such as battery systems, to store excess energy generated by the solar panels for use during low-energy production periods.

Passive Cooling: •Analyse the prevailing wind direction and utilise the natural breeze to create cross-ventilation in the building, promoting passive cooling during warmer months.

• Design the building with proper insulation and thermal mass to regulate indoor temperatures and reduce the need for mechanical cooling.

•Incorporate external shading devices such as louvres or overhangs to protect windows from direct sun exposure.
