BIELLESE TRAVEL GUIDES

Biella Biellese and the

History and places between textiles and nature

Discover with us all the good and exceptionally beautiful things of a territory in between mountains and vast plains, between art and industrial tradition, between uncontaminated nature, cuisine and high quality products.

The 10 reasons for one choice The province of Biella extends in the North-Western area of Piedmont; it is located 1 hour and 36 minutes from Milan, 1 hour and 33 minutes from Turin, 2 hours and 11 minutes from Genoa and 1 hour and 18 minutes from Aosta: therefore close to the sea, close to the mountains and located halfway between Turin and Milan. Caselle and Malpensa airports can be reached in just a few minutes over an hour and in 4 hours drive it is possible to reach Switzerland. The Biella area has a great variety of landscapes, from mountain pastures to rice fields, with a strong trace left by the human industrial activity, characterized by a uniquely harmonious insertion into the landscape of industrial archeology. Proud of the many protected areas and natural reserves of extreme beauty, the Biellese also includes economic, cultural and artistic excellence, which combined with the quality of the air, water and the environment create a unique microcosm with a quality of life tailored to man. Discover the territory through the images of those who live in it or visit the area posted on Instagram with the hashtag #innamoratidelbiellese. A land to choose to live in There are many reasons that push people to choose to live in the Biellese area. The security The perceived safety in a medium-sized city like Biella is certainly higher than in a metropolis. The data from the Public Security Department for the Ministry of Home Affairs tells us that the security of our territory is better than Turin and especially Milan, which has almost double the number of reported crimes. The environment The annual ranking of Legambiente on the urban ecosystem sees Biella at the 15th place nationally, Milan at the 31st and Turin at 81st (data of 2016). In the same year, the air quality in the three cities places only Biella below the legal limits in terms of fine and ultra-fine dust pollution. With the support of

Life quality The higher quality of life is also measured by services (Biella has a brand new hospital equipped with the most modern medical equipment inaugurated in 2014), by their accessibility (nursery waiting lists tend to zero) and by the possibility to enjoy more free time (from Biella it is possible to climb over 1000 meters in only 15 minutes time: the first closest ski resort can be reached in just over 12 km from the heart of the city). The price of real estate The amount of money necessary to buy a 100 square meters accommodation in Biella is eight times lower than that needed for an accommodation in Milan and less than half the price for one in Turin: the cost for an accommodation in our area is from 810 euros to 1150 euros per squared meter in Biella, compared to 2100-2850 euros per squared meter in Turin and 7500-10000 euros in Milan. Culture The presence of cultural associations and foundations allows the organization of outdoor events and shows that enliven the seasons in the Biellese area, also due to the collaboration of the three historical buildings of the upper town within the “Polo Culturale of Biella Piazzo, and of the Museum of the Biellese Territory in Biella Piano. Digital The Biellese area is highly digitized, regarding both the structural endowment as well as the skills acquired by the operators, thus reaching first place in the ranking in Italy for the number of e-commerce activities in the area. There are also many high-level co-working (e.g. SellaLab). The Biella Digital Agenda has been awarded as national excellence.

An attractive city Health In addition to the new hospital, we have many hospital facilities of national excellence especially in the field of oncology, such as Fondo Edo Tempia and LILT, both very active in the area of cancer prevention and research. In addition, there is a wide range of personal services, especially dedicated to the elderly, such as the Local Mind Center housed in Villa Boffo. Sport The number of sports facilities in the Biellese area is very high compared to the national average and all facilities also enjoy a high level of maintenance. In the city there are numerous excellent sport centers in different disciplines. Education College and school education offer is varied. CittĂ Studi stands out as it is one of the most important centers of industrial culture in Italy. The Pact of the Baptistery provides a welcome path facilitated by relevant associates, who have the required skills and useful contacts, in order to follow and fulfill in very short time all the procedures needed in matter of residential settlement.

A walk in the center The Baptistery, built in the 11th century from the remains of an ancient Roman necropolis, is the ancient witness of the place that the inhabitants of the time chose as the soul of the city. Biella, in Latin “Bugellaâ€?, rises in an area inhabited since prehistoric times. In 836, the name of the city appears for the first time in the deed with which Emperor Louis the Pious donated the city to Count Bosone, his messenger. The area overlying the Cervo stream was the seat of the Diocese: next to the Baptistery stands the Neo-Gothic cathedral of Santo Stefano built next to the ancient temple, of which only the bell tower still remains. At short distance, past Palazzo Oropa, seat of the Town Hall, there is Via Italia, the backbone of the city since very old times when it was still called via Umberto I. On one end, it is bounded by the Zumaglini Gardens, a small and fascinating public park near the the historical center, and on the other hand, it leads to the Riva district which is the center of nightlife with its clubs and the cultural center with art galleries and, just a step away, Cittadellarte, the unrivaled foundation of Michelangelo Pistoletto. The Villani Social Theater, built in the second half of the 19th century, overlooks the nearby Piazza Martiri della LibertĂ .

The ancient church and the Museum On the edge of the hill on which the medieval part of Biella stands, the San Sebastiano complex construction began in the year 1500. The church and the convent were built by Sebastiano Ferrero, treasurer of the House of Savoy, who therefore also welcomed the transfer of the Lateran congregation (of which his brother was part) into the city. In the year 1504, the church was consecrated, designed and decorated following the Renaissance architectural influences. The crypt houses the remains of Alessandro La Marmora, the Biellese founder of the Bersaglieri corps, and those of his brother Alfonso La Marmora. The bell tower, 51 meters high, marks the border with the old convent, which since 2001 has housed the Museo del Territorio. Among the exhibits and works preserved, the most renowned paintings of Piedmontese and Biellese artists clearly stand out, from the 16th century to present day, from Bernardino Lanino to Ugo Nespolo and Michelangelo Pistoletto, it is also possible to admire a collection of pre-Columbian finds and a historicalartistic section with works by Fontana, Magritte, Chagall, Mirò and Emilio Longoni’s masterpiece “Reflections of a hungry man”. The Egyptian Room collection bears witness to the work of Ernesto Schiaparelli, an Egyptologist from Biella whose findings made the Museo Egizio in Turin the second most important in the world.

7

The medieval quarter Looking up, from the center of the city you can clearly spot the outline of the hill on which, in medieval times, part of the people and life of Biella moved. It was the bishop of Vercelli Uguccione, in the 12th century, who granted privileges to anyone who made the decision to go and live on the hill, convincing Guelph citizens of Biella to live there. The center of the Piazzo - as the old quarter is called - is Piazza Cisterna, overlooked by the homonymous palace, a noble residence built in the 16th century. The heart of religious life is the church of San Giacomo, consecrated in 1227. Other noble palaces can be found in the direction of Corso del Piazzo: Palazzo Ferrero, whose tower is also visible from the plain, Palazzo La Marmora, historical residence of the family with its 80 meters long facade, and Palazzo Gromo Losa with its splendid garden. The three residences are the soul of the Piazzo Cultural Center. The synagogue testifies that the neighborhood once housed the Jewish ghetto. The house with exposed wooden beams overlooking Piazza Cucco is considered to be the oldest in the district. The funicular, built in 1885, recently renovated and made free for travelers, connects the Piazzo district to Biella city.

Art and culture History and art find a home between the Museo del Territorio and the Piazzo Cultural Center, which often work together to provide more than one venue for largescale exhibitions. Thanks to this agreement, exhibitions such as “Selvatica” and “Il Viaggio” are hosted, Biella was in fact the first Italian city to dedicate a special event to the painter and Nobel Prize winner, Dario Fo, after his death. The international scope is guaranteed by “Cittadellarte”, home to the laboratories, research centers and exhibitions, and to the “Third Paradise” of Michelangelo Pistoletto, who is the father of the regeneration of this old factory along the Cervo stream. The archives of the Fila Foundation contain the recent history of sportswear design, created in Biella when it was home to the distinctive red and blue “Fila” brand. The Sella Foundation preserves an archive of over 500 thousand photographs. The Zegna Foundation links culture, nature and philanthropy and is based in the family home, next to the factories in Trivero. The testimonies of textile history are definitely worth further insight through material made available in the archives at the Chamber of Labour or an in-person visit; amongst these most notable are: the Wheel Factory in Pray, where machines were set to work by the water flow of the stream, and the Lanificio Botto in the town of Miagliano (seat of cultural activities of the “Amici della Lana”. An extra curiosity? The Biellese area hosts, in the castle of Verrone, the Falseum, which is the only museum in Italy dedicated to forgery in all its forms.

The capital of wool The tradition is noble and ancient: long before the statutes of the city governed the work of wool makers and weavers during the Middle Ages, a tombstone from the Roman era spoke of the “sagariumâ€?, a producer of coarse wool. But it was in the nineteenth century, with the industrial revolution, that Biella became the Italian, perhaps European, or even worldly capital of wool. The success in this sector was attributable to water, suitable for refining the raw product and crucial in supporting the movement of the machines before the later arrival of steam, coal and electricity. Still today, in the landscape of Biella along the Cervo stream, it is possible to clearly notice the headquarters of the main wool mills of the city, some active, others converted (including the one where the Pistoletto Foundation is located). Where looms are lit, some of the finest and most renowned fabrics in the world are produced. Some of the brands that have marked forever the history of clothing and fashion come from Biella, therefore tradition is a fundamental key to success. The rest is done by the careful work and know-how of those who choose, select, search for fine wool to be transformed into splendid fabrics in the most distant corners of the world. To pass on to future generations this precious wealth of knowledge, CittĂ Studi was born, the university campus on the outskirts of the city that cultivates the required excellence for contemporary business.

The sanctuary of Oropa... There is no Biellese citizen who has not been to “l’Urupa” at least once in his lifetime. L’Urupa or better Oropa (as it is known today) is a very unique place that lives in the heart of the inhabitants of the area; its exceptional beauty is, in fact, a World Heritage Site recognized by Unesco since the year 2003. Here stands the most important Marian sanctuary in the Alps. Since the 4th century, when Sant’Eusebio (Bishop of Vercelli) promoted the construction of churches along the paths between Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta, numerous places of worship were built here. In the one dedicated to Santa Maria, the Eusebian Sacellum was built in the 9th century and since 1400 has housed the statue of the Black Madonna, an exceptional wooden work created by a sculptor from Valle d’Aosta. The ancient basilica was completed in 1620, built by the city of Biella to fulfill the vow made during the plague of 1599. Short distance upstream from the church that houses the statue of the Black Madonna, stands the monumental upper basilica, known as the “new church” for the Biellese people, which was designed at the end of the 18th century, although its construction began only a century later and consecrated in 1960. Its dome, 81 meters high, is also visible from the plain. Today tourists and pilgrims can stay in Oropa, as in past did Guglielmo Marconi and the royals of the House of Savoy over the centuries.

...and the other sanctuaries Biella’s history of religious devotion is made up of other places of worship. Turning towards the plain from Oropa, on your right side, you are facing the direction of the Sanctuary of Graglia: the complex was born in 1600 from the project of a parish priest, who dreamed of a “new Jerusalem” for pilgrims. The current sanctuary houses the wooden statue of the Madonna Lauretana, venerated by the inhabitants of the area. On the other hand, from Oropa looking in the opposite direction, you will see a road that climbs the slopes of a mountain reaching the Rosazza Gallery, at 1500 meters above sea level, from which it descends towards the sanctuary of San Giovanni d’Andorno, whose construction began in 1605 in the scenic Cervo Valley. The Cervo Valley is also where you may find and hear the distinctive sound of the largest bell of the entire province, 17 quintals of bronze, cast in 1764. In the nearby Mosso valley, the Sanctuary of the Brughiera is another precious testimony of the cult for the Madonna in 1600, in that a century earlier a deaf-mute shepherdess of the Mosso valley miraculously received the gift of hearing and speech. The route of the Via Francigena is also worth a reminder; it is the pilgrims’ road between Canterbury and Rome and crosses the Biella plain, crossing the territories of Roppolo, Cavaglià and Viverone.

The garden on a hill There is a magical garden on a hill, fully exposed to the sun on every side, on one side it has a panoramic natural balcony on the plain, and on the other side it faces the basin of the Biella Alps: it is the Burcina Natural Reserve, situated on the border between the territories of Biella and Pollone. Since the mid1800’s it has also been a wonderful park, to enjoy at all times of the year, but especially from mid-spring onwards it is breathtaking explosion of colors thanks to the flowering of all the different plant and bushes varieties. The original initiative was founded by Giovanni Piacenza, a textile industrialist from Pollone, who bought the hill to transform it into a park faithful to the stylistic dictates of a typical English landscape garden. His son, Felice, completed his father’s work by importing and transplanting numerous exotic tree species. It was in fact the latter who traced the paths that still today permit long walks among plants, streams and incredible viewpoints. It was Felice Piacenza, above all, who created the “valley of the rhododendrons”, a corner of the hill where azaleas and, in fact, rhododendrons are concentrated, giving life in the flowering season to a natural spectacle without equal. At the end of the more than 4 kilometers path, where the maximum altitude reaches 829 meters, it is also possible to enjoy the sight of a medieval tower.

An oasis between snow and nature Ermenegildo Zegna, founder of the dynasty of textile entrepreneurs and man of value, in the 1930s created homes for his employees, a health center, constructed a road to reach the surrounding mountains more easily and all this just as a gift to the land where he was born, Trivero, situated in the upper valley of Mosso. Today his idea takes shape through the Oasi Zegna, a park of about 100 square kilometers that showcases all the best that nature can offer in a mountain environment. The Oasi Zegna project was born just over twenty years ago and includes trails for trekking, mountain biking and horseback riding, enjoyable trails that cross the highest part of the valley, also including various historical places, where Fra Dolcino (a renowned heretic preacher of the fourteenth century also cited by Dante in the Divine Comedy) barricaded himself together with his followers to escape the armies sent by the bishop of Vercelli in 1306. In this enchanting scenery, visitors discover details of flora, fauna (including the Carabus Olympiae, a particular specie of coleopter endemic to these areas) and the morphology of the territory through information panels scattered along the park, which also indicate the guided routes. Winter skiing or biking and trekking during sunny summer days make Bielmonte the heart of sporting activity in the oasis.

The gold mine and the savannah There are corners of Biella where nature is intertwined with history. This is the case of the Bessa, a natural reserve in the valley marked by the Elvo stream, and where a gold mine exploited by the ancient Romans, in times of maximum splendor, gave work and supported up to five thousand workers. But among the stony ground left by rivers and glaciers and paths, there is clear evidence of even older settlements, as revealed by the rock carvings scattered throughout the park area. Even today, the gold-bearing vocation of the area is remembered by a group of lovers: in 2013, the banks of the Elvo stream hosted the world championship of gold prospectors. Moving towards the Cervo, the other great stream that runs through the Biella area, you come across a particular ecosystem, like an African savannah at very different latitudes. It is the Baraggia, a plateau that starts from the borders of Candelo and extends for 5000 hectares towards the plain. It is a fascinating location as well as an ideal place for bird-watching, for quiet walks, mountain bike excursions or horseback riding, and a small paradise for mushrooms hunters.

The lake of Viverone It is useless looking for rivers that feed it or “steal” its water: the oval Lake of Viverone, third largest in Piedmont after Lago Maggiore and Lago d’Orta, is enriched by numerous underground tributaries that very slowly replace its water (it has been calculated that the total water circulation and replacement takes 35 years). It has ancient glacial origin and has among its characteristics that of being a precious source of evidence for archaeologists: here the remains of pile dwellings discovered only about twenty years ago tell of human settlements since the Bronze Age, a testimony declared by UNESCO as World Heritage Site. Today it is the beach for Biellese people (and the ones from Ivrea: the lake is halfway between Biella and Ivrea) who enjoy it as a summer location for a good refreshing swim or water sports, from water skiing to sailing. The wilder west bank is surrounded by nature and is the perfect place for bird watching. The Lake of Viverone welcomes tourists from every country since years and offers various hotels and camping sites for visitors. The typical dish is whitefish, caught fresh in the lake, accompanied by a glass of “Erbaluce”, a renowned white wine typical of the hills in the surroundings.

Around Biella Let yourself be guided by the instinct of explorers, starting from the capital throughout the area all around it: you will discover that the surroundings of Biella offer precious and curious gems. Only few kilometers from the city, in the nearby town of Candelo, there is the “Ricetto”, a small enchanting village built in the Middle Ages to protect citizens in the event of a siege and preserved intact up to today. Perhaps you have already seen it, as a privileged setting for dramas (in the “The black arrow” to the parody of “Promessi Sposi” by the popular comedians Marchesini, Lopez and Solenghi) or films (in Dracula by Dario Argento). In crossing the Cervo stream and climbing the hills of Vigliano it is possible to enjoy the spectacular view from Villa Era with its vineyards or from the castle of Montecavallo with its crenellated towers or, just a little further east, from the castle of Valdengo. Getting even closer to the woods and hills, you will find the historic center of Masserano, with its medieval origins, and the small district of “Bonda di Mezzana Mortigliengo”, transformed into an open-air modern art gallery with works of almost 100 artists. Another important stop not to forget is the Biellese ecomuseum with its fifteen “cells”, from the one dedicated to works of terracotta typically from Ronco to those that tell of ancient crafts and traditions such as the Susta mill in Soprana, the Casa Museo situated in the charming town of Rosazza and the Trappa of Sordevolo.

Bike, golf and mountain For a fan of cycling and mountain biking it could be enough just saying the name Oropa to recall an exceptional afternoon in 1999, when the great cyclist champion Marco Pantani chose to face the climb uphill from Biella to the Sanctuary of Oropa, to make one of the most incredible feats in the history of the tour of Italy or “Giro d’Italia”: Pantani, after having stopped at the very beginning of the ascent due to a mechanical accident, and the unfortunate fall of the chain, he began an incredible solo comeback, which led him to win the first place on stage after overcoming the entire group. Bicycle amateurs who choose the Biellese area for their excursions, cannot overlook the eleven kilometers of this renowned final climb, which has also been a stage finish on six other occasions and cycling competitions of the “Giro d’Italia”, the last one in 2017; it is in fact strewn with multiple signs and testimonies of accomplishment of that difficult task. However, the whole area is scattered with ups and downs for good legs, including mountain bike trails, also throughout the Oasi Zegna. The Biellese is a land of mountains: while Bielmonte and Oropa offer spectacular settings for ski lovers (downhill, cross-country, ski-mountaineering) in winter, during the rest of the year trekking is always possible on different routes for sportsmen of every age or training level, reaching a peak or one of the many mountain refuges as destination. Golfers from abroad also choose Biella following their passion: among 18 and 9 hole courses, the Golf Club Le Betulle in Magnano clearly stands out and has been repeatedly elected as “Best golf course in Italy”.

21

The traditional cuisine The streets of taste The Biellese cuisine knows how to delight the palate of lovers of good food with ingredients coming from the raw materials of its territory. Tasting a delicious “polenta concia” is an incredible food experience not to be missed; it is a yellow flour soup cooked in a copper pot, completed with browned butter in a pan, and mixed with another key ingredient, the “toma”, a typical mountain cheese with countless maturations. The “maccagno”, which Quintino Sella loved to bring to his political colleagues to taste in Rome, is a toma cheese and a Slow Food presidium. The rice as well is undoubtedly a PDO-certified product from the Biellese and Vercellese Baraggia, the only label of protected designation of origin in the province. The “paletta” is another special Slow Food presidium, it is very simply the pork shoulder but flavored with local herbs and berries and left to marinate for hours and then boiled. As for dessert, the intense flavor of the “canestrelli”, dark chocolate enclosed between two thin and crunchy wafers, leaves a very distinctive and noble taste. Another un-missable dessert are the “torcetti”, a typical biellese crunchy and crispy butter cookies covered with sugar and enriched with butter. And what about the wines? The most popular ones are the full-bodied red wines of the hills around the area of Lessona, Masserano and Brusnengo (Lessona, Bramaterra, Coste della Sesia) and the white wine “Erbaluce” of Lake Viverone. But other beverages from Biella reached worldwide popularity such as the Ratafià liquor (an infusion of alcohol and fruit typical of the Cervo Valley), our beer, from award-winning blonde beers in international competitions to great artisanal ones, and we also proudly have the lightest mineral water in Europe.

The streets of fashion The journey through the history of wool in the Biellese area can also be an opportunity for a great shopping experience. While the course of streams through the valleys of the province has always been the natural seat of factories, numerous shops and outlets are instead located all along the Biella-Vercelli main road, also known as the “Trossi road” for local people (in honor of count Trossi who was very passionate about engines and cars). Far from the Trossi road and along the valleys, even the historic headquarters of the companies host shops, outlets and sometimes even small museums of textile history. The shops of luxury brands “Made in Biella” are also a very common destination for foreigners who want to further deepen the Italian culture and tradition of high fashion in addition to the Milanese fashion district. In Biella and its surroundings, you will be able to combine shopping with the incredible nature that distinguishes it, often embellished by the patronage of the industrialists who have created beautiful natural parks. As last tip, in the narrow plain strip of land from the outskirts of Biella towards Vigliano and Valdengo, look carefully, you will be surprised by a colorful and hidden excellence all throughout Biella, that of horticulture.
