5 Benefits of Not Having a Smart Phone

Smartphones are the people’s gadget- pretty much every one has one these days. But smartphones haven’t won us over as some passing style statement (although they can be just that sometimes) or as a shortsighted techno-fad; smartphones are just extremely handy and come with a very high utility value. Essentially my smartphone is my whole life wrapped up into a slim pocket-sized gadget- from social intercourse to work and productivity, from personal notes and ambitions to collective ideas and opinions. So can I fathom a life without my smartphone? In all honesty- no! But I must also admit, I do see the upside to a life sans smartphone. Giving up on my smartphone would mean going back to a simpler time where life was a lot more compartmentalized and I wasn’t expected to be on top of everything 24-7. Would I be able to manage living such a life, especially when all my family, colleagues and friends zip away on their smartphones? I honestly cannot say. What I can be sure of though is the benefits such a life would bring- here are my favorite 5. 1. Look Up! Smell the Roses! It isn’t hard to walk around town completely absorbed in our smartphones and all that is occurring on its pocket-sized screen. So often thus, we are completely plugged out from our surroundings and all the happenings around us- from the scents of Spring to the little incidents that make a walk through town so much more interesting. No smart phone would mean I would actually have a clue of what was going on around me. 2. More Conversation, Less Chatter

Smartphones eat into a lot of conversation time- even the little nothings we indulge in before getting to the point. But smartphones, in its efforts to make us a lot more productive, take away the appeal of little nothings so we can get straight to the point- via message or email. No smartphone would bring back the charm of conversation, of one-on-one engagement and the social niceties that just cannot be technologically replicated. 3. Cuts Down on Social Media Time Maybe you are a stickler for discipline, but I just cannot help checking my Facebook page every hour, on the hour- especially as my smartphone gives me access to it anytime and anywhere. When I finally get down to work, twitter or other social media beeps my focus into a flurry again. Ditching my smartphone would naturally curtail the intrusion of social media into my every day, safely contained within my desktop. 4. Significant Savings Switching from mobile data enabled plans to simpler ‘call and sms only’ plans can mean a significant reduction in your phone bill. Not to mention the handsets which are also a lot cheaper, when they come without the dollops of apps and features that set smartphones apart. 5. Less Injuries Being more present in the moment is the greatest perk of living sans smartphone; but even better is the reduced risk of injury that it comes with. From tripping over while walking absorbed in your smartphone, accidents caused while being plugged in, strain on the eyes, to the fatigue and stress your digits can experience- life is a lot more injury prone with smartphones than without.
