Welcome to the NH state finals Distinguished Young Women is a national scholarship program that inspires high school girls to develop their full, individual potential through a fun, transformative experience that culminates in a celebratory showcase of their accomplishments.

Judging Criteria

Distinguished Young Women attracts outstanding participants who demonstrate excellence in all areas of their lives. At all levels, the judging standards and basis of selection are the same. They were devised to evaluate the qualities and characteristics in which our program believes every young woman should strive to possess.

Scholastics 25%

The scholastics category is judged by a separate qualified judge. Scholastics Judges consider the following criteria: grade point average, standardized test scores, as well as class curriculum and selection.

In a 10 minute interview and discussion session, the Judges’ panel considers the following criteria: clarity of expression, mental alertness, perception, sense of values, human relations, educated responses, knowledge of current issues and events, and personality.

Each participant is allowed 90 seconds for her talent presentation. Judges consider the following criteria: technical ability, originality, appropriateness of selection, costume, and stage presence.

The fitness portion of the program is to evaluate the participants' overall conditioning during a choreographed fitness routine. Judges consider the following criteria: agility, coordination, strength, and stamina.

College-Granted Scholarships The Class of 2024 is eligible for scholarships from colleges and universities across the nation.

Opportunities for all our DYW Participants today Below are college-granted scholarships offered to qualifying DYW participants

ALBION COLLEGE | Albion, Michigan Four year, renewable $1,000 scholarship to any DYW Participant (To qualify, students must apply for admission by December 1st of their senior year of high school).

CATAWBA COLLEGE | Salisbury, North Carolina Four-year renewable scholarship of at least $10,000, with annual renewal contingent on maintaining a 2.7 or higher college GPA and remaining enrolled full time HOOD COLLEGE | Frederick, Maryland Four year, renewable half tuition scholarship with maintenance of a 3.25 GPA JUNIATA COLLEGE | Huntingdon, Maryland Four-year, renewable $20,000-$36,000 merit scholarship to any DYW participant; All DYW participants will also receive a four-year renewable $500 award OHIO UNIVERSITY | Athens, Ohio Four-year, renewable scholarship of $2,000 with maintenance of a 3.0 GPA and minimum of 12 credit hours per semester to: Any Distinguished Young Woman participant Limited to 3 awards per year. OHIO UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS | Athens, Ohio Four-year, $1,250-$2,500 renewable four year scholarship to: Any Participant who is admitted to, and pursues a major in, the OHIO University College of Fine Arts (the Schools of Music, Art+Design, Theatre, Dance, Film, or Interdisciplinary Arts) RANDOLPH COLLEGE | Lynchburg, Virginia All Distinguished Young Women Participants are eligible for the WildCat Commitment awards of: • $5,000 four-year renewable scholarship to students with 4.0 or higher high school GPA • $4,000 four-year renewable scholarship to students with 3.75-3.99 high school GPA • $3,000 four-year renewable scholarship to students with 3.5-3.74 high school GPA • $2,000 four-year renewable scholarship to students with high school 3.25-3.49 GPA • $1,000 four-year renewable scholarship to students with high school 3.0-3.24 GPA Through a combination of merit scholarships, need-based grants, and other incentives, every admitted student who files the FAFSA will receive at least $13,000 in financial commitment from Randolph College.

SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY | Georgetown, Texas $5,000 renewable four year scholarship to any Distinguished Young Woman participant (from any state) All applicants for admission to Southwestern will be considered for our general merit scholarships at the time of admission review DYW program awards may be stacked with general scholarship awards from the University TENNESSEE WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY | Athens, Tennessee Four year, renewable $1,000 scholarship, with annual renewal contingent on maintaining a 2.0 cumulative GPA to: • Any Participant Additional Academic Scholarships, with annual renewal contingent on maintaining a 2.0 cumulative GPA, awarded to Any Participant: • $14,000 four-year renewable scholarship to students with a 3.86-4.00 high school GPA • $12,000 four-year renewable scholarship to students with a 3.30-3.85 high school GPA • $10,000 four-year renewable scholarship to students with a 2.90-3.29 high school GPA • $8,000 four-year renewable scholarship to students with a 2.89-2.00 high school GP UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO | Moscow, Idaho Renewable Invitation to Idaho Scholarship for qualified, new, first-time freshmen and transfer students pursing their first bachelor’s degree, to all participants at the local/state level who are residents of any non-WUE state who have an incoming GPA of 3.0 or higher. The award results in a savings of just under $16,000 and is renewable up to four-years of undergraduate enrollment for first year recipients with a 2.5 minimum University of Idaho cumulative GPA. For transfer students, the award is renewable up to three additional years, depending on the number of transfer credits with a 2.5 minimum University of Idaho cumulative GPA. The Invitation to Idaho cannot be combined with WUE and is only available to nonresident students.

UNIVERSITY OF MOBILE | Mobile, Alabama Four-year, renewable half tuition with maintenance of a 3.0 GPA. To qualify, you must have a minimum 27 ACT and 3.0 high school GPA UNIVERSITY OF WEST ALABAMA | Livingston, Alabama $2,500 four-year renewable Trustee Leadership Scholarship (with maintenance of a 3.0 GPA) to any local or state participant (with at least a 19 ACT) Trustee Academic Scholarships at UWA start at a 21 composite ACT and 3.0 HS GPA and can be partially stacked with the DYW award so qualified participants can receive the full amount for their highest award plus half of the next.

UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA BIRMINGHAM | Birmingham,Alabama One-year, stackable scholarship of $1,000 to: Any State Winner *Must be admitted for the fall semester following HS graduation. Must submit the General Application in UAB’s Blazer Scholarship Management and Resource Tool and complete four additional questions. One of these additional questions requires you to upload written verification of your participation/selection from DYW. Deadline for completing the scholarship application is May 31.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA | Mobile, Alabama Four-year, renewable full tuition and fees scholarship with maintenance of a 3.0 GPA to Any State winner with 30 ACT or 1360 SAT and 3.0 GPA After acceptance to USA, incoming first-time freshman will automatically be reviewed for the Freshman Admission awards. Students must be a U. S. citizen, applied for/obtained Permanent Residency, or a student attending a U.S. High School with a qualified visa status; be an incoming first-time freshman; and h Have at least a 3.0 High School GPA and an ACT super score of at least 21 (or SAT equivalent). Freshman Admission Scholarships range from $3,000-full tuition, renewable annually with eligiblitiy requirements met.

Tyler Dodds

Tyler Dodds a lifelong NH native and a graduate of Newmarket High School. Tyler attended the University of New Hampshire and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science with minors in criminal justice and national security studies. While attending college he worked for several seacoast fire departments where he trained and served as a Firefighter and Advanced-EMT. Tyler currently serves as a State Trooper with the New Hampshire State Police out of the Troop-A barracks, where he is a Field Training Officer (FTO). Tyler is assigned to the New Hampshire State Police Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, as well as the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction (CAR) Unit. In his free time Tyler enjoys being active, spending time outdoors maintaining his small family farm, and challenging himself with mechanical projects.

Chloe Kantharia

Chloe Kantharia moved to Boston in 2019 to attend graduate school at Boston University. In 2022, she completed her Master’s of Divinity degree from BU’s School of Theology. After graduation, she accepted a full-time position at Boston University’s Marsh Chapel where she now serves as the director of hospitality and the primary wedding coordinator. Her work offers her the opportunity to mentor undergraduate students, execute a variety of events, and learn new skills in web development and social marketing. However, Chloe’s favorite part of her job is helping couples through the joys and stresses of their wedding weekend. Outside of work, Chloe enjoys floral arranging, singing, cooking, and spending time with her husband Josh and their dog, Charlie.

Chloe has a long history with the Distinguished Young Women program.

In high school, she had the opportunity to work on the stage crew for the Indiana state program for two years before participating as a senior in 201112. In 2012, Chloe was named the Distinguished Young Woman of Indiana.

She went on to compete at Nationals in Mobile, AL, where she made lifelong friends! Since competing, Chloe has also served as a local chairperson and as a judge at both the local and state levels.

Ed Lecius

Ed is active in numerous professional and community organizations. He has served as a director of the Nashua Police Athletic League, Lions Twin State Soccer Association and the New England Community Policing Partnership. He is past chair of the Nashua Fire Commission and Park Recreation Commission. In addition, he is currently serving as chair of the Supervisory Committee at Triangle Credit Union in Nashua.

Ed has been a member of the Nashua Lions Club since 1971. He has held many offices within the association at the club, district, multiple district, regional and international level.

Ed retired as community policing coordinator and emergency management liaison for the Nashua Police department in 2020. He currently serves as a member of the NH Police Standards and Training Council. Ed and his wife, Elaine, reside in Merrimack, NH, have two daughters and sons-in-law and three granddaughters.

Susan Parillo

Susan Parillo has been involved in this scholarship program for almost 40 years. She was chosen to represent Rhode Island at the 1984 America’s Junior Miss national finals and has remained actively involved since. She has served as choreographer for several state programs, as well as a judge and judge’s chair. Susan recently retired as the RI state co-chair.

Susan graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health & Physical Education from Rhode Island College. She currently teaches at the elementary level and is a mentor teacher for college students. Susan is the proud recipient of the Teacher of the Year award. She was also honored with the Outstanding Alumni Award from Rhode Island College, where she serves on the Advisory Council. In addition, Susan has been a Varsity cheerleading coach and her athletes were showcased at the nationally televised Gator Bowl in Florida. Susan has an extensive background in dance, as both a performer and choreographer.

Susan has been married for 35 years. She especially loves family time with her grown children, spending time with her dogs, and loves traveling to Myrtle Beach, her second home. Susan is so thankful for this program that has blessed her life in countless ways.

Dr. Jeff Parmelee

Dr. Jeff Parmelee is a biology professor at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine. He teaches courses in biology such as Human Anatomy and Physiology, and has led classes around the world, including the Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica, Australia, Borneo, and Madagascar. He received his Master’s degree from Illinois State University and Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. His research interests focus on amphibians and reptiles, recently publishing a paper showing how the Covid-19 pandemic helped the amphibian populations in Maine by decreasing automobile traffic during their breeding season. Jeff serves as an advisor for the motorcycle, scuba diving, and mushroom student organizations at UNE, as well as having led a student group to New Orleans to help build houses, and he regularly presents lectures to the public about frogs and salamanders. He is on the board of directors for the Maine Big Night amphibian monitoring project, and when not teaching or advising students he enjoys foraging for mushrooms, collecting skulls, and spending time outdoors.

Lyndsay Robinson

Attorney Lyndsay Robinson is counsel at Shaheen & Gordon, P.A. Lyndsay graduated from Saint Anselm College with a Bachelor of Arts in politics and a minor in Russian area studies. Upon graduation, Lyndsay attended the University of New Hampshire School of Law. Lyndsay is an active member of the Bar and dedicated to serving her community. She currently serves as Treasurer of the New Hampshire Women’s Bar Association and is the ABA Young Lawyer Delegate for the New Hampshire Bar Association.

Lyndsay is a member of the New Hampshire Women’s Foundation Board of Directors. Lyndsay also serves on the Board for the New Hampshire Bar Foundation and serves on many other advisory boards and associations.

Lyndsay has been honored with many awards, including: the New Hampshire Bar Association Pro Bono Program Rising Star in 2020, Best Attorney in Greater Nashua 2020, the Bruce Friedman Pro Bono Award in 2023 and the New Hampshire Bar Foundation’s Robert E. Kirby Award.

Lyndsay was selected as New England Super Lawyers Rising Star for 2021 and 2022. Most recently, Lyndsay has been named partner at her law firm.

In Lyndsay’s spare time, Lyndsay enjoys traveling, reading, New England sports, and spending time with her family.

Laurie Gilbert

Laurie was selected as the 2019 High School Teacher of the Year by the Nashua Education Foundation. She is currently in her 24th year of teaching and is the former lead high school Teacher of the Deaf in the Signs of Learning Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program in Nashua, NH. In addition to teaching, Laurie is one of two NAD Master Level American Sign Language Interpreters in the State of NH and works closely with the NH Department of Education consulting on legislation related to Deaf Education and Educational Interpreting issues. Laurie also spends large amounts of time providing interpreting services and presenting workshops related to the effects of hearing loss in the classroom. Laurie graduated from Plymouth State College and earned her Master's Degree in Deaf Education from Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. Her education was funded in large part by participation in scholarship programs.

Tom Hudson

Tom Hudson has judged in Junior Miss and Distinguished Young Women programs throughout the US and serves on the National Support Team. He resides in Ponce Inlet, Florida with his wife, Vicki, and was active in all areas of the Distinguished Young Women of South Carolina Program. Tom has the distinction of having both a wife and daughter who were former South Carolina’s Junior Misses. He holds a degree in Criminal Justice Administration, and is a retired Certified Fraud Examiner for Wells Fargo Bank. He enjoys traveling, visiting grandchildren, and long walks on the beach.

Vicki Hudson

Vicki Hudson was the State Chairman for the Distinguished Young Women of South Carolina Scholarship Program for twenty years, and has been involved in the Junior Miss Program since 1970 when she was South Carolina’s Junior Miss. She graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education in 1974, and received her Master’s degree in Special Education in 1980 from the University of South Carolina. In 2002, she became the State Chairman of South Carolina’s Junior Miss Program, and was named as one of the Outstanding Four Star State Chairmen the following year. She was selected by the state chairmen to be their Representative on the DYW National Board of Directors, where she served two years. Vicki and her husband Tom were awarded the Larry Poteat Service award at the National Program, and she enjoys serving on the Judges Panel at programs throughout the United States. She is a retired Education Specialist, and was twice chosen as “Teacher of the Year”. Vicki is also the proud grandmother of ten beautiful grandchildren, and she enjoys traveling and mentoring young ladies.

Class of 2023 Awards The Class of 2023 shared in $155,000 in cash scholarships at the national level and more than $1 BILLION in college-granted scholarships available to them by taking part in the Distinguished Young Women experience.

Carrington Hodge DISTINGUISHED YOUNG WOMAN OF AMERICA FOR 2023 Alabama’s Carrington Hodge was named Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2023 during the 66th National Finals.

Carrington is a graduate of Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School. Her academic honors include being named a 2022-2023 CollegeBoard National African American Recognition Program Scholar, AP Scholar, Princeton Prize Certificate of Merit recipient, and more.

Outside of the classroom, Carrington is passionate about education and social justice. The project she devotes most of her time to is an initiative she founded, “Unmasked: The Simone Project.” The project began as a YouthServe assignment that Carrington strongly felt should continue on.

The organization addresses topics such as minority history, social justice, and current events that may be uncomfortable to study in a classroom environment.

Aside from “Unmasked,” Carrington is extremely passionate about working with children. This love for impacting youth has lead her to become involved in organizations like YouthServe and has influenced her future career path in pediatrics.

In the fall, Carrington will attend Vanderbilt University on a pre-medical track, where she will also be on the dance team.

She plans to attend medical school and pursue a career in pediatric neurosurgery. After dancing competitively for much of her life, she is most excited about expressing her love for dance in a new way with the team at sporting events and school activities.

FUN FACTS •

If you ask Carrington what her perfect Saturday looks like, it definitely involves some sort of activity! She loves water parks, rollerskating, and being active.

Carrington has been dancing since the age of three and will be on the Vanderbilt dance team starting this fall.

While her comfort show is “Grey’s Anatomy,” she’s recently been binge-watching “This is Us.” She is an only child! Carrington is her parent’s pride and joy, and she knows they will be her biggest cheerleaders even when she moves away for college in another state.

Carrington’s hidden talent - she sings! Whether it’s in a choir or in the car, Carrington loves to carry a tune.

When asked who inspires her, she replied “Definitely

With over $78,000 in total cash scholarships and a gold medallion, Carrington will represent the Class of 2023 as Distinguished Young Woman of America for this year.

Kianna Harlow New Hampshire The Distinguished Young Woman of New Hampshire for 2023 is Kianna Harlow, from Bedford.

Be Your Best Self

Class of 2023 state representatives shared the message of Be Your Best Self with more than 5,000 children across the country Founded in 1987, the Be Your Best Self (BYBS) program is the official outreach program of Distinguished Young Women. In keeping with our mission, the program provides an opportunity for participants to beneficially impact the lives of children in their communities.

The simple and practical message of the Be Your Best Self program is carried across the country through dynamic and engaging presentations created by Distinguished Young Women participants at all levels (local, state and national).

The Be Your Best Self program seeks to encourage young people to lead successful and productive lives. Participants delivering the BYBS message use their personal experiences and unique talents to create presentations that inspire leaders for the future. Be Healthy, Be Involved, Be Studious, Be Ambitious and Be Responsible are the five elements that help define what it means to Be Your Best Self.

This year, Distinguished Young Women celebrated its fifteenth annual National Be Your Best Self Week, a nationwide event that took place April 17-21. During the week, Distinguished Young Women participants across the country visited with groups of children in their communities and via social media to share the Be Your Best Self message. As a result, thousands of young people learned what it means to be their best selves and how they can work toward a bright and productive future.

Distinguished Young Women is proud to offer a special scholarship award in conjunction with the Be Your Best Self program, the Distinguished Outreach Award. Any young woman who participated in a 2023 Distinguished Young Women program at the local or state level (excludes state winners) and participated in National Be Your Best Self Week was eligible to compete for the award. The recipient of the 2023 Distinguished Outreach Award is Finley Richardson of Mobile County, AL. The Be Your Best Self Scholarship Selection Committee consists of Tifara Brown, Emily Lloyd Herman, Bliss McMichael, and Tobi Collins Weingart.
