SYMBIOTIC ARCHITECTURE

STEAM Education Center, Sha Lo Wan, HK Instructed by Dr. Ken Too Academic Individual work

This project is located in Sha Lo Wan, northwest of the Lantau island. The most significant challenge is setting up a symbiotic system between STEAM industries development, preserving natural habitats and revitalising the village. As a result, the massing takes a dynamic and high-tech approach is manifold. Firstly, massing minimises the habitat’s impact, which benefits reinstating and transforming abandoned farmlands into a new habitat for local species. Secondly, passive and active environment designs aim to achieve a nature-responsive profile and allow high-tech to walk into the local village to facilitate low-carbon living.

3

Site Characteristics & Rural Regeneration strategies

Located adjacent to a valley, the ideal living habitat for butterflies is continuously shrinking because of the abandonment of agriculture. Therefore, transforming existing abandoned farms to reinstate the vivid atmosphere for butterflies became a significant task in this exercise as they are the environmental indicator of nature.

STEAM industries’ introduction enables villagers and youth to co-create a neighbourhood with techs. For instance, a renewable energy trading system setup allows users to decide according to their needs and gain incentives to approach low carbon living. In addition, youth plays a significant role in advancing local with techs and bringing science into actual life settings.

SITE ISSUES

A. Urban Walls

Urban Walls are blocking sun lighting as well as natural ventilation.

B. Detached greenery

Because of the lack of a continuous greenbelt pollutants could not be separated from the primary traffic route.

SOLUTIONS

C. Fragmented Civic Zonings Civic Programs were organized chaotically, leading to heavy traffic.

D. Flooding and lack of hydrophilic spaces Flooding becomes a hidden urban hazard. On the other hand, a city's lack of connection to water needs to be reviewed.

A. Urban Break-out spaces To medicate between two scales and introduce an appropriate scale of public space to accommodate public activities between massing.

B. Transforming Urban Path to Recreational Path Highlight an urban scape with greenery and water elements.

C. Urban Connector An urban connector penetrates through various zoning and connects citizens.

D. Reactivation through nullah embankment The existing barrier is proposed to be transformed into a stepped seating, which enriches the current urban fabrics. In addition, the expanded embankment and water channels can hopefully cease flooding.

CO-LIVING IN PUBLIC HOUSING COMPETITION, GROUP WORK, MODEL MAKING

Design Strategy One : Front yard & Communal Spaces

To increase chances of encountering through front yards, open corridors and communal spaces:

The front yards of each flat act as a buffer zone to keep privacy and to provide intimate contacts within the neighbourhoods. Open corridors allow more visual connections. Various communal spaces such as a sky garden, playground, chess table, and an urban farm, like a “social magnet”, attract the residents to gather.

Design Strategy Two: Basic “family” module of T1, T2 & T3

To encourage taking care of one another by organizing the three unit types, T1, T2 and T3, into one basic “family” module of living space:

We considered the residents of T1 as mainly the elderly, T2 as the newly married family, and T3 as a family with kids. We hope that the closely connected spatial organization can strengthen their relationships.

CORRUGATED CARDBOARD CHALLENGE

ACADEMIC GROUP WORK CONCEPT & MODULE DESIGN

These pavilions was to seek the minimal moves to form space by cardboard mainly. Cardboard elasticity provides a flexible yet rigid foundation which enables us to shape freely. Therefore, we choose arches as the base modules as they offer a solid foundation for playing with various configurations of solids and voids, modules & spaces in multiple formats.

WELLNESS PLACE MAKING IN SECONDARY SCHOOL

Professional practice Schemetic design & Iterative testing

Thanks to the design engagement process, this is a tailormade atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. It facilitates a collaborative outcome to accommodate ideas and thoughts from students.

The space was divided into four sections according to an ascending degree of privacy to cater to the students’ different needs. With the help of screens and curtains, the space could transform into different settings according to students’ needs; for instance, the space could merge into one space to house a band show or a broadcast.

SPECTATE – PARTICIPATE –ELEVATE SPK COMMON SPACE

Professional Practice, interior and facade design & testing

How do we turn a neighbour into a spectator? How do we motivate someone to get off the bench and eventually participate as a player?

In this exercise, user experience is our priority when preparing every space. We trust that a welldesigned sports hub could facilitate a habit change in the manner of spectating - participating - elevate.

Therefore, in the spacial design progress, a broad appeal of sports events could draw in citizens with different interests and ages. Especially under the generation of social media, popularizing and supporting sports would have been easier than before. Once they have taken the first step to sit down and watch, getting motivated by others to move and play together will quickly follow.

STANLEY OUTDOOR TRAINING CENTER

Professional Practice facade schematic design

SOTC is located in the Stanley, along with stunning panoramic views of Ma Hang bay, spanning from the ocean in the west to Stanley Market in the East.

A low range of hills hugs the site and provides a natural green backdrop for the building in the foreground. The new SOAC must work in harmony with the natural landscape despite having a larger mass than before. Therefore, we propose to skew the building mass away from the tree. It also offers a unique and dynamic shift to the building.

PERFORATION

Perforation are sized according to the recommended pore size for climber plants to get through. Varied perforation also enables the control of reflection and opacity.

CLADDING

Cladding is arranged in an undulated manner to facilitate the growth of plants.

By breaking down the surface continuity, it enhances the original intention of camouflaging the building.

EXTERNAL WALL GREENING

Species of climber plants & ground cover accustomed to the coastal environment will be selected, reducing the need of replacement and maintanence
