Hi, I am Dyan Monzón.

Welcome to my portfolio.

I’m a 20-year-old Mexican-American architecture student who is seeking to learn and expand my knowledge in the architecture design field. I am profoundly passionate in architecture, its practice, and how to use it to better our space and society.

I have a strong and unique mix of culture paired along with great language capabilities. I have a strong sense of design development, computer graphics, problem-solving, and construction. However, I always aspire to learn and improve.

Cubism was a revolutionary new approach to representing reality invented around 1907-08 by artist Pablo Picasso.

Picasso collected different views of subjects together in the same picture, resulting in paintings that appear fragmented and abstracted. As art critic Louis Vauxcelles once said, cubism is reducing everything to “geometric outlines, to cubes.” Cubism was the most influential art style in the 20th century and later became an inspiration to architecture styles like constructivism and neo-plasticism.

This house is designed with simple geometric outlines and cubes inspired by Picasso’s cubism; this house is monotone on the outside to further highlight the synthetic cubism within. Synthetic cubism is the later phase of cubism that started around 1912 and is characterised by simpler shapes and brighter colours.

Casa Picasso presents a strong feeling of cubism turning art into architecture. Clean geometric lines are the heart of this project, however different angles of the structure expose the different elevations in Casa Picasso highlighting the fragmentation of cubism. From the inside one feels a complete sense of rebirth as the attention is shifted to a bright coloured interior to contrast from the monotone exterior. Casa Picasso is the perfect place to create art, express passion, and live through unforgettable moments.

SAKSEN VISITOR CENTER EL PASO | TEXAS | UNITED STATES

Located in the border town of El Paso, Texas, U.S.A ; Saksen Visitor Center is a tribute to Mexican alebrije ¨Saksen,¨who is famous for saving his brothers in multiple lifetimes with different animal bodies embodying his spirit. Although two countries are separated by a border, throughout centuries, the El Paso - Juarez community has been brotherly supporting each other just like Saksen. The visitor center takes inspiration not only from the alebrije’s actions, but also from its shape and sound translated into a digital diagram.

Saksen Visitor Center exploits the pleasant conditions of the Palisades Canyon to allow the visitors to open themselves up to the surroundings. The spacious and open design promotes the connection between the inside an outdoor beauty. This space is meant to be shared with others, providing knowledge from the city of El Paso. Saksen Visitor Center is an invitation for guests to explore the natural beauties of El Paso’s and its welcoming community.

The concept of the project is to create something meaningful to the El Paso - Juarez community. Saksen Visitor Center’s architecture is a reflection of the alebrije Saksen which is something unique to the region and it’s Mexican-American culture. Inspired by Saksen, the structure is designed to promote socializing and connection to the community and local environment; therefore, the building presents itself in a very transparent and open manner that removes visual barriers.

QUEEN VICTORIA ROUNDABOUT EL PASO | TEXAS | UNITED STATES

Queen Victoria Roundabout is a sculpture directly inspired by the Agave Victoria - Reginae. This agave is local to the Chihuahuan desert which the city of El Paso is part of. This project’s purpose consists in embracing the nature found at home and amplyfying it’s features to create local art to beautify the city. Queen Victoria Roundabout is just one of a series of local desert plant art projects in display in El Paso, Texas.

First, a logo was created. This logo is composed by several individual triangles to create the shape needed. Although, this logo simplifies the complex geometry of Queen Victoria Agave, this logo was then extruded into a three dimensional form which was manipulated to bring the sculpture into real life. The sculpture amplifies the jagged characteristics of the plant, as well as the bold green color that stands out against a pale desert.

Queen Victoria Agave is popular as an ornament for its beautiful, iconic, thick and sculptured leaves with geometric streaks of white. The sculpture is indicative of these same characteristics that not only characterize the agave, but also the strong and beautiful community of El Paso.

Queen Victoria Roundabout crowns the city with victory rewarding it for its amazing people.
