Welcome from Alison Cobbin, Head of School I have the privilege of being the Head of Dwight London and sharing my days with a school full of open-minded, compassionate and enthusiastic students and staff.

Our Location We are conveniently located in North London with easy access to both the North Circular and M25 motorway. Heathrow, London City, Stansted and Luton airports are all easily accessible and we are serviced well by public transport, including national rail, both the Northern and Piccadilly lines of the London underground as well as local buses. School Transport We offer two transport services, a door-to-door and a shuttle service between sites and Woodside Park tube station, both are provided by qualified, trained drivers. The bus area extends as far south as Islington and St John’s Wood/Maida Vale. Areas covered include Swiss Cottage, West Hampstead, Cricklewood, Hendon, Hampstead, Golders Green, Hampstead Garden Suburb, Finchley, Islington, Highgate, Muswell Hill and Alexandra Palace.

Curriculum The guiding principles of the curriculum implemented at Dwight London are: •

Students should develop a holistic attitude to knowledge; they should see the subjects they learn as an integrated whole.

• Students’ own cultural experiences and backgrounds, and those of our diverse teaching

staff, are a valuable learning resource; we encourage understanding through intercultural awareness.

These principles are best met through the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum.

We have gained a reputation as one of few international schools in the UK authorised to offer the IB Primary Years Programme (IBPYP); IB Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) and the prestigious IB Diploma Programme (IBDP).

The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally-minded people who, recognising their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. This is achieved through the IB Learner Profile - ten attributes that are thought to develop internationally-minded global citizens.

As well as serving a community of students from all over the world, the heart of the International Baccalaureate programme places an emphasis on global themes and perspectives, encouraging the development of internationally-minded global citizens. Our classrooms can literally extend into other regions of the world through our partnerships with The Dwight Schools in New York, Seoul, Shanghai and Dubai. Our global network and our London location, in one of the world’s most exciting and vibrant cities, offer students unique opportunities to experience the world through school visits, exchange programmes, and collaborative projects.

The IB focuses on how students learn as much as what they learn and therefore utilises the Approaches to Learning (ATL). The ATL skills in an IB context are thinking skills, communication skills, research skills, social skills and self-management skills. These skills are incorporated and taught through all the IB disciplines and in age-appropriate ways at all levels of the IB programmes.

The IB Programmes are rigorous academic programmes that require regular assessment to enable us to measure and track our students’ progress through the IB Programmes. In addition to the on-going formative and summative assessment tasks that all students complete, we use other recognised tools to assess progress and attainment. In the Lower School this is completed through the use of the NFER (National Foundation for Educational Research) Tests, and in the Upper School, students take CATs (Cognitive Ability Tests). These assessments are used so that the school can benchmark Dwight students’ levels against UK national norms and to inform our planning.

An attraction for many of our globally-mobile families is that the the worldwide network of IB schools ensures that the children have the option of continuing their IB education if the family has to relocate.

Thanks to the IB I am able to balance my work and social life, stay calm under stress, and apply different perspectives to situations. I am also confident when presenting in front of a class because of the number of presentations the IB requires of you. Dwight has helped prepare me for the independent learning required at university, such as taking initiative and responsibility during independent and group projects. I feel so prepared and confident in all my university classes. The IB helped me to become an analytical and critical thinker, shaping me into a reflective and openminded learner. The realisation that I've been able to pass and do well in such a rigourous programme, has given me a lot of confidence for my future studies and any other challenges coming my way. Our IB Primary Years Programme (IBPYP)

ADMISSIONS INFORMATION

The IB Primary Years Programme is a framework that focuses on a holistic curriculum driven by the students’ own curiosity, in and out of school. It is designed to develop the students’ academic understanding using traditional disciplines – language, mathematics, science, social sciences, technology, the arts and additional language (French from age 3, with Spanish added from Year 5) – but taught in a child-friendly manner. The IB draws on local and global perspectives and while the children are given daily lessons in numeracy and literacy, the rest of the subjects are taught through six broad and balanced transdisciplinary linked topics (Units of Inquiry). Much of what they learn in maths and language is applied to real-life authentic contexts through the Units of Inquiry. Through the IB Learner Profile, the IBPYP also focuses on developing international-mindedness and encourages children to consider their behaviour and personal values. The programme is supported by student inquiry and is aimed at developing independent learning and research skills where students take more and more responsibility for their own learning. The IBPYP is designed to prepare students for the IB Middle Years Programme that follows, or to give students the knowledge, skills and confidence to transition to other educational systems when it is time to move on.

Upper School Parent

Our IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) Over the course of the two-year programme, students: • Study six subjects chosen from the six subject groups - Group 1: Language and Literature,

Group 2: Language Aquisition (second language), Group 3: Science, Group 4: Individuals

and Societies, Group 5: Mathematics and Group 6: The Arts.

• Complete an Extended Essay • Follow a Theory of Knowledge course (ToK) • Participate in Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

IB Diploma In order to complete the full diploma students need to select six subjects which are studied for two years: • Three at Higher Level (HL) • Three at Standard Level (SL) • One from each IB Diploma Group (possible choice of online course as one of the six IBDP subjects) • Complete CAS, ToK and the Extended Essay Students choose one subject from each IB subject group. In Group 6, an arts subject, may be replaced by a second Group 1, 2, 3 or 4 subject.

IB Evaluation Report

English as an Additional Language

ADMISSIONS INFORMATION

Students who need additional English language support to successfully access our IB Programmes are required to participate in our English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme taught by qualified specialist teachers who work in liaison with the mainstream subject teachers. This normally starts in Year 1 and is available up to and including M5. English proficiency is assessed through a variety of methods including writing samples, conversations and assessment tests to measure verbal and written comprehension and to determine the level of support required either out of class or within the lesson. Clear exit criteria are used to determine when the child no longer requires the EAL support. Participation in our EAL programme incurs an additional fee.

Additional Learning Support

The Quest Programme, with its specialists, is an integral part of the school community and is a resource for all teachers and parents.

Clear exit criteria which is shared with the family are used to determine when the student no longer requires the services of the Quest Programme. The Quest Programme will remain in place for as long as is required. Participation in the Quest Programme incurs an additional fee.

ADMISSIONS INFORMATION

As an inclusive IB World School, we accept students with a wide range of abilities, subject to space, class balance, and on the understanding that some students will be required to participate in our Quest Programme for the provision of additional learning support. The aim of the Quest Programme is to equip students with the skills necessary to successfully and independently access the rigorous IB programmes in a mainstream setting. Admission to the programme is sometimes made on the basis of recommendation of teachers and assessment by the SENCO, IEPs and ECHPs and other specialist reports. (External assessments must be paid for by the families.) Through Quest students receive one-to-one or small group tuition from trained staff in skills such as reading and writing, maths, organisational skills, speech and language and occupational therapy.

Mother Tongue Mother tongue is a child's native or home language, and we aim to support our students in the maintenance and development of mother tongue language and literacy skills.

Such support may include: • The provision of mother tongue classes within the curriculum • Providing parents with information regarding the different mother-tongue programmes

available locally • Recognising and celebrating the various mother tongue languages within the school • Extending mother-tongue resources in the library • Providing bilingual dictionaries in the EAL department for those students whose mother

tongue is not English.

• Mother tongue clubs and activities The provision of mother tongue language support may incur an additional fee.

Forest School

In our Lower School we offer a weekly Forest School session for our students from Kindergarten through to Year 3, delivered by our teacher who is a qualified Forest School practitioner, in a forest setting which is a short bus journey from our school. Forest School is an inspirational process, that offers all learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment.

This adopts a child-centred and child-led approach that aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, caring children who become resillient problem solvers who are motivated to have an impact on our global and local communities. Through the use of an outdoor environment we build children’s confidence, self awareness and self regulation to enable them to collaborate and show empathy for others in order to become successful learners.

Residential and Day Trips We believe that experiences beyond the classroom enrich the learning experience for our students and there is no better way to understand learning than when they are able to see, hear and experience a moment for themselves.

Our students participate in field trips from Kindergarten all the way through to D2 (Year 13). They experience a wide-range of trips, exploring many different environments and learning opportunities.

These trips are individually planned by our experienced and passionate staff to complement learning in the classroom. They vary from year-to-year depending on where the teachers and the students choose to take their learning.

From Year 3, students also participate in different residential experiences. In the Lower School the residential trips usually take place during a week in March which allows our younger students time to settle in to school and become more independent. As students move through the school, the residential trips build upon their independence by increasing the amount of time and distance away from home, preparing them perfectly for the longer Retreat trips in our Upper School.

Our Upper School Retreat trips take place at the start of the academic year and serve as part of the transition programme. Their prime purpose is for students to bond with their peers, new and old, in an outdoor, residential and challenging environment.

Equally the students build relationships with their tutors and teachers at the start of the year which prepares them for the year of learning ahead. Add to that the elements of physical activity, the opportunities for learning vital skills and an immersion in English and it’s the best way for our older students to start the academic year!

We are privileged to have London and all that it has to offer on our doorstep and often take advantage of exhibitions that visit in places such as: The Science Museum, Houses of Parliament, Wallace Collection, The British Museum, The British Library and the Design Museum to mention just a few!

Dwight Parent Association (DPA) We are proud of our community and we encourage all our parents to become actively involved in supporting the life of the school. Our DPA welcomes all parents and holds many events and social gatherings over the course of the year, including arranging parent buddies for new families, orientation events, coffee mornings, Winter Fair, Summer Fair and Out and About discovering London group and beyond.
