IGNITING THE SPARK OF GENIUS IN EVERY CHILD

Welcome! I am thrilled to invite you to co-create the present and future of Dwight School Hanoi.
We are here with one clear mission: to ignite the spark of genius in every child. Across all Dwight campuses, we are deeply committed to our pillars of personalized learning, community, and global vision.
Teachers were instrumental in my own educational journey and I’m profoundly grateful for the opportunity to continue a commitment to lifelong learning through spearheading a new chapter in Dwight’s history. Since 1872, Dwight School has fostered a legacy of innovation, and I am honored to extend that tradition to the newest member of the Dwight Schools network in Hanoi.
I have a passion for creativity, deep curiosity, and enthusiasm, and I aspire to a school where our community starts their day energized, finds safety and stimulation in their surroundings, and returns home fulfilled by the joy of learning.
Join us to be part of a community where personalization is not just a word; it is a promise.
Warmly,

Brantley Turner Head of School

History
150 Years Of Tradition
Dwight’s legacy of innovation and personalized learning dates back to 1872.
Our school was designed to prepare graduates for admission to prestigious colleges and universities; the school’s namesake is Yale’s twelfth President, Timothy Dwight. Today, all our schools extend this track record of success in top university admissions worldwide.
Under Chancellor Stephen Spahn’s direction for more than 50 years, Dwight has grown from one campus in New York to a network that spans three continents and into the cloud.
Vice Chancellor Blake Spahn provides oversight for operations at all Dwight Schools, and is the Founder of Dwight’s Early Childhood Division in New York.

Faculty & Staff

Dwight School Hanoi faculty and staff are deeply committed to the daily growth and personalized pathway of every student.
We know that the people who shape student learning the most are teachers.
Our team members each bring something special to the fabric of our community. In order to truly personalize learning for students, our faculty share knowledge about students, collaborate on best practice learning interventions, and stay up to date in their fields of expertise through active engagement in professional development.

Innovation & Entrepreneurship
Innovation is in our DNA
DESIGN THINKING
As students shape projects of their own imagination, they focus on problemsolving, which includes inquiry, analysis, idea development, creation, prototyping, and evaluation.
At Dwight, students tap into the design thinking process as they devise innovative solutions to practical problems, ranging from digital game development and product design to robotics, programming, and architecture.

Students who want to take their projects beyond our Makerspaces - or launch new ones - can dive into Spark Tank, our incubator. This signature Dwight program teaches students entrepreneurial, innovation, and leadership skills beyond the classroom.
MAKERSPACES FOR ALL
Wonder Lab and Invention Studio (Lower School)
Students create, invent, and engineer with both digital and analog tools. Projects include 3D laser-cut postcuts, woodworking hybrid animals, 3D modeling and printing, ancient architecture, book binding, and stop motion animation.
Spark Lab (Middle and Upper School)
Students use 3D printing, additive manufacturing machines, vinyl and laser cutters, a robotics library, woodworking tools, and consumables that allow students to produce both low - and high-fidelity prototypes. Students will have the chance to explore their passions in a creative and innovative way. The Spark Lab and our educators support students learning about topics like these:
• Human factors and ergonomics
• Resource management and sustainable production
• Modeling
• Raw material to final product
• Innovation and design
• Classic design
• User-centered design (UCD)
• Sustainability
• Innovation and markets
• Commercial production
The ECD setting promotes community and global perspectives while establishing a sense of purpose. Our program follows the International Baccalaureate curriculum framework, which combines the best research and practices to provide an excellent educational program for children aged 3-12.
PRESCHOOL (AGES 3-4)
Students participate in developmentally appropriate, guided experiences designed to develop a strong sense of self. Equally important is the development of fine motor skills to promote independence. Immersion in English, supported in mother tongue (Vietnamese/ Korean) bolsters English language comprehension and production.
KINDERGARTEN (AGE 5)
At this age, we help students begin to unlock their unique talents and interests and allow their natural abilities to flourish. In Kindergarten, our students approach learning with curiosity and feel safe taking risks and making mistakes.
Kindergarten students experience a range of researched-based programs, including Wilson Fundations phonics, which develops solid decoding skills through explicit, targeted instruction. They begin to love being writers by referring to the Six Traits Writing framework. The concrete use of materials and visual cues in Singapore Math provide our students with real life use of math concepts and builds mental math skills.
PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME IN ECD (AGES 3-5)
The Preschool offers the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) to children ages three through five. The nature of the PYP places the child at the center, paying close attention to the students’ strengths and interests.
In our ECD Learning Studios, children are actively engaged in the learning process, gaining a deep sense of pride and ownership in their accomplishments.

Early Childhood Division

Lower School

GRADES 1 (6-7 YEARS OLD) AND 2 (7-8 YEARS OLD) are the introduction to Lower School. These years provide our students with strong foundational academic skills and opportunities to gain automaticity in literacy and numeracy. Routines and expectations increase in these grades as students work towards self-management and collaboration with peers.
GRADES 3 (8-9 YEARS OLD) AND 4 (9-10 YEARS OLD) are years of increased risktaking and innovation as a result of a more evolved approach to questioning and problem solving. The Units of Inquiry provide students with more opportunities to delve into reference books, develop higher level thinking, and find their voices.
GRADE 5 (10-11 YEARS OLD) supports learners to become mentors to younger students. Our fifth graders also have a chance to become experts as they embark upon a rigorous eight week cycle of research, collaboration, and presentation in The PYP Exhibition.
PYP EXHIBITION

The PYP Exhibition is a multifaceted academic event that assesses understanding through evidence and research undertaken by the students, encouraging them to take action. This event marks the transition to Middle School.
PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME IN GRADES 1-5
Learning Through Transdisciplinary Themes
The transdisciplinary themes mark the starting point of all student inquiries. Within the context of each theme, students explore central ideas and ask questions. These themes elicit rich dialogue between students and teachers.
The Six Transdisciplinary Themes
Middle School
Middle School is a unique and transformative time in a student’s life, marked by both academic challenges and personal development. We believe in nurturing the whole child, recognizing the importance of not only academic success, but also social and emotional well-being. We meet the individual needs of each student, recognizing their unique talents and learning styles.
These Middle School-specific needs are addressed to ensure a successful transition from Lower School:
ORGANIZATION SKILLS:
We provide strategies and support to help students manage their time effectively and keep track of assignments.
INDEPENDENCE AND RESPONSIBILITY:
Students take ownership of their learning and actions, promoting a sense of responsibility and accountability.
SOCIAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT:
We emphasize the importance of building positive relationships, empathy, and effective communication to create a respectful and inclusive community.
STUDY HABITS:
We guide students in developing study routines that suit their individual learning styles.
TRANSITION SUPPORT:
We have a dedicated advisory team to provide support and guidance to students as they navigate this transition.
Beyond the classroom, there are opportunities to join athletic teams, participate in theater productions, bring novel ideas to Dwight’s Spark Tank incubator, and enroll in a robust offering of daily After-School Activities and clubs.
MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME (MYP)
The MYP encourages students to ask questions, think critically, and find creative solutions to real world problems, skills that are crucial during the Middle School years. It also promotes understanding and appreciation of different cultures, helping students become more open-minded and aware of the world around them.
Students study all courses from the 8 MYP subject groups:
• Language and Literature
• Language Acquisition
• Individuals and Societies
• Sciences
• Mathematics
• Physical and Health Education
• Design
• The Arts

At home, you’ll see a change in levels of confidence, public speaking, self-reliance/ independence. Students become more active citizens in the family and in their local community and in their country.

UpperSchool

As students progress in their journey from grades 9 to 12, we witness a remarkable transformation that encompasses both academic excellence and significant personal growth. Our mission in the Upper School is to provide a comprehensive preparation for their futures, ensuring students are ready for both graduation and their chosen career paths. Central to this mission is the IB curriculum, which supports academic achievement and fosters critical thinking. In an environment that encourages exploration and curiosity, students discover new interests and engage with challenging concepts. This approach not only cultivates intellectual courage but also prepares them to navigate the complexities of the modern world with confidence and curiosity. Through this journey, our students develop into confident individuals, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and mindsets necessary to succeed in their future endeavors.
MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME (MYP) AND DIPLOMA PROGRAMME (DP)
In Grade 10, students complete the MYP Personal Project, a pivotal experience. They demonstrate research, creativity, and problem-solving. The DP is a rigorous two-year education program designed for students in Grades 11 and 12.
The DP develops in students the ability to reason for themselves, not just accumulate facts. It enhances awareness of our common humanity, encourages a sense of social responsibility, and prepares students for life-long learning.
Students at Dwight School Hanoi can choose three pathways to graduation:
• IB DP – The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
• High School Diploma + IB DP Course Certificates

Grade-Level Support
Lower School Homeroom Teachers:
Our dedicated homeroom teachers design daily instruction, engaging students in developmentally appropriate inquiry with a global focus. Every homeroom teacher also pays keen attention to the social, emotional, and ethical growth of students. This culture of care has a direct impact on the students’ ability to embrace learning, take risks and develop empathy.
Middle School and Upper School Advisors: At Dwight, students are assigned an Advisor. This mentorship provides consistent support, assisting students in their academic and personal growth journeys.
Course Selection Support
This ensures students pick courses that meet the IB’s rigorous standards and complement their future goals.
Creativity Activity Service (CAS)
Students learn from the experience of regularly doing real tasks beyond the classroom. They can combine all three components or do activities related to each one separately. CAS is an important way for students to nurture leadership skills and the ability to reflect on their actions.
Social-Emotional Counseling: Our counseling services equip students with the essential tools and support to navigate challenges effectively.
Quest Program
The Quest program gives students learning options and support. It’s tailored for each student, acknowledging their strengths, weaknesses, learning preferences, and pace. Quest programs share a common goal: delivering personalized learning experiences.
Learning Support
The Quest Department works closely with students, teachers, families, and external experts. The focus is on assisting students with mild to moderate learning needs. Identification of students eligible for learning support occurs during the admission process or through our internal referral procedures. Tailored Student Learning Plans (SLPs) and progress reports are created according to each student’s identified level of support.
Quest encompasses:
• Intensive instruction in reading, writing, spelling, and phonics skills
• Fundamental mathematics skill development
• Enhancement of fine motor, gross motor, and graphomotor skills
English Language Learning (ELL)
• Assistance with organizational skills and executive functioning
• Curriculum support, working closely with specialists and teachers
• Customized learning experiences that bridge the gap between home and school
Our English Language Learning program is available to students who benefit from additional faculty time to support them in English. Our ELL program is personalized for each student. We acknowledge students’ strengths and weaknesses, as well as their learning style and speed to provide a structured program delivered by specialist English as Additional Language (EAL) educators.
The content is organized into four strands: Listening and Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Socio-cultural Competence and Media Literacy.
Exceptional Talent
Quest facilitates flexible learning that allows students to pursue their exceptional talents. Additionally, the Quest program provides expert teachers for students who benefit from enrichment in a specific academic discipline.

Home Language

Dwight emphasizes the significance of multi-language learning, highlighting its benefits in cognitive development, academic success, cultural empathy, and adaptability in a globalized context. Proficiency in multiple languages empowers students to engage with different cultures, broadening their educational and professional horizons while promoting critical and creative thinking.

The school prioritizes the maintenance of students’ home languages, recognizing the foundational role of a child’s first language in identity, learning, and additional language acquisition. By integrating home language learning into the curriculum, Dwight supports the development of strong linguistic bases, facilitating easier language transfer and comprehension, and reinforcing English and other language learning.
Dwight’s curriculum includes daily Vietnamese and Korean home language programs, with plans to expand offerings based on student demographics through home language in-schedule tutoring options and After-School Activities. This approach aligns with the school’s pillars of personalized learning, global vision, and community engagement. It caters to individual linguistic backgrounds, prepares students for a multicultural world, and fosters an inclusive environment where diverse languages and cultures are respected, thus enhancing academic performance and community cohesion.
Community Service

We are deeply committed to empowering our students to become compassionate leaders and proactive agents of change, inspired by the initiatives of our sister schools within the Dwight Global Network.
Actions driven by student interest have the greatest impact. When students are passionate about a cause, whether it’s environmental conservation, supporting underserved communities, or advocating for animal welfare, their enthusiasm starts a ripple effect throughout the school community. These student-led efforts address pressing societal needs and also empower students.
Students are encouraged to lead with passion, engaging in service projects that resonate with their personal interests and ambitions.
From Dwight School New York’s wide-ranging projects that develop leadership and collaborative skills, to Dwight School London’s international partnerships focusing on environmental sustainability, Dwight School Hanoi students are inspired to contribute creatively and effectively to their communities and beyond.
