About D-E 360° D-E 360° is one of four divisions of Dwight-Englewood School, offering open-enrollment courses for enrichment, advancement, or for credit.

Courses are designed to be multidisciplinary in nature offering learning across a variety of disciplines for different age groups (including adults).

D-E 360° offerings are designed to enhance learning outside of typical school hours, including during weekends and after-school timeframes, in a dynamic environment with small learning group sizes. Facilitated by expert instructors from both within the D-E School community and trusted organizations, D-E 360° courses are targeted primarily at students in preschool to grade twelve. Some offerings require specific prerequisites and/or past experience in particular disciplines, and others are open to all students regardless of background.

Among the D-E 360° the core offerings are Lower School AfterCare & Enrichment (ACE), D-E International, DELTA (Dwight-Englewood Learning and Teaching Academy (for Adults), Middle School Enrichment and Summer Connections. D-E 360° also coordinates the World Game for neighboring school Gifted & Talented Programs as well as serves the

D-E 360° Summer Connections (SC) 2020 is in session June 29 through August 7, 2020! Get ready to LEARN BOLDLY with us this Summer 2020!

For Summer Connections 2020, we have an exciting theme for our youngest campers (ages 3-10): Visions of Greatness. We’re inspired by the summer Olympics and the people in the world around us, which will make for an exciting season. Campers in Preschool through Grade 4 in the Discoveries, Adventures & Junior Camp programs will earn medals as they examine success through the weekly-themed lenses of sports, the arts, science, literature, history and social justice. Our campers will experience first hand lessons around what builds determination, creative expression, innovation and design. Add to that, there are a multitude of fun Enrichment as well as academic offerings for our Middle School students, our Scholars program for High School students who want academic advancement and college test prep, as well as Immersives as an elevated option for those who want to pursue their passions.

At Summer Connections, there is something for everyone. We are the only camp in the region that designs programs for campers through our Enrichment program (grades 5-9) to build a summer schedule that uniquely taps into their personal interests. Each week, Enrichment campers may select from a catalog of offerings that cover a myriad of fun topics from athletics and cooking to debate and engineering. With last year’s major construction at completion, we will be using the full campus, including D-E’s new stateof-the art teaching kitchen in our Middle School building for Enrichment cooking classes.

Our Immersive programs are also an opportunity for campers to delve into topics for self-exploration and leadership development. Masterlevel teachers engage students in a collaborative environment to provide experiential learning that will lay the foundation for further exploration beyond summer.

Over past summers, we introduced STEM Challenge, Entrepreneurs Academy, Explosive Science, Young Visionaries for budding artists, Community Service/Leadership, Heading for Broadway, Wall Street & U, as well as an express course in coding all of which will continue this season.

String Society, now in its thirteenth year, offers students the opportunity to take private lessons and to have an extended day for musical growth.

On a different note, a few new offerings including Debate Boot Camp, Art & Design Studio, and Animal Behavior & Zoology will get students’ strategic and creative juices flowing while developing a depth of knowledge and skill.

GENERAL INFORMATION Registration Registration is available through our website at de360.d-e.org/summer-connections/. All Summer Connections (SC) offerings must meet minimum enrollment numbers by June 1, 2020 for the classes to proceed. Early registration is encouraged and allows us to guarantee SC offerings at earlier dates, as soon as enrollment is sufficient. A $150 non-refundable deposit must be submitted at the time of registration.

Note: grade levels refer to the grade the child will enter in September 2020. Please complete all sections of the registration in their entirety.

Complete registrations also include a nonrefundable $75 application fee per camper.

Application fees will be waived for registrations made between January 15 and March 1, 2020.

Payment for the courses/programs for which you are registering must be paid in full ten days prior to the start date. You will be set up with a username and password so you can return to the registration form at any time. Families registering more than one camper from their immediate family (e.g. brother, sister) will receive a discount of 5% per additional camper* and will be applied at registration check out.

Sibling discount begins March 2, 2020. *(limited to 3 siblings/discount applied to the lowest tuition) Enrollments are limited and accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. If an offering does not meet the minimum enrollment, it may be canceled. Registrants will be contacted via email and asked to select another offering or refund will be given. Payment can be made by credit card through the online registration system, Campsite. Checks or cash payment will be accepted in the Summer Connections Office; however registration will not be complete until full payment is received. Checks are made payable to Dwight-Englewood School. Note that there are additional textbook costs for academic courses offered through the Junior Scholars and Scholars Programs. Textbooks may be purchased from any vendor. The textbook title, ISBN and author/publisher will be provided at the time of registration for academic courses. In

the cases where there are fees for other course materials or special field trips, the fee amount includes the cost of the course/program in the course descriptions provided. Confirmation of registration will be emailed when payment is processed. Any additional information about Summer Connections including confirmation of schedules, camp procedures and policies will be sent one week prior to the start of the program.

Enrollment will close one week prior to the first day of a scheduled class/program or once maximum enrollment is reached; early registration is encouraged because availability for every class/program is not guaranteed.

Once the maximum enrollment in a class/ program is reached, it will be closed to new registrants. *In addition, completed medical forms are due before a student can be admitted into any classroom. Those students who do not have all their paperwork on file will not be able to start any classes/programs. The school reserves the right to cancel or change the time of any course; students will not be penalized if a course is canceled. In the event of cancellation, the Summer Connections staff will work to ensure placement into alternate courses.

Tuition and fee refunds will only be issued in the event that a class/program is canceled by Dwight-Englewood School.

D-E 360° Summer Connections is ACA Accredited!

Accreditation of Dwight-Englewood School is provided by the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools (NJAIS) .

D-E 360° Summer Connections is also very proud to be a member of and accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA)!

This means we have met more than 300 standards for health, safety and programming quality. Accreditation by the ACA is a voluntary yet rigorous process. To learn more visit www.acacamps.org.

Enrollment for the Summer Connections program is open to all students.

Students can be registered at any time online at http://de360.d-e.org/, by phone during business hours at (201) 227-3144, or in person during business hours in Leggett Hall, Room 001. Business hours are: Monday – Friday 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Information Enrollment for D-E 360° Summer Connections is open to all students and provides a variety of opportunities for students in Preschool (age 3) through Grade 12 from public, parochial, and independent schools. A combination of introductory, enrichment, and advancement courses in a number of academic disciplines, the arts, and athletics, allows for diversity of study. The SC faculty is comprised of DwightEnglewood School teachers and carefully selected educators from other schools. Small class sizes ensure opportunities for personal attention and the academic progress of each student. At Summer Connections, a part of the experience provided by the school is to set behavioral expectations clearly and to help students learn to follow these expectations.

What you can expect from DE360° Summer Connections Camps and Classes When your child attends a D-E 360° program, you can expect a safe, caring, supportive, educational environment that fosters independence and a desire to learn in all participants. Knowing that all children need support to be successful, we do our best to accommodate all children who are interested in our programs.

While we offer top-notch programs, we may not be the best program or have the right supports in place for all children, especially those requiring special medical, behavioral, or social support. What DE360° Summer Connections Community expects from campers and students We expect that all participants will demonstrate care, respect, and responsibility at all times while with us. We expect participants to exhibit self-control, to be nice to others, and to follow simple instructions. Disciplinary actions are seen as educational rather than simply punitive.

In the event of inappropriate actions by a participant at camp, a warning will be issued.

If the action continues, the child will sit out of

the ongoing activity and a parent/guardian will be notified. Fighting; swearing; disrespect to a director, faculty, staff member, or another child; abusive language; physical abuse; stealing, etc., are actions contrary to DE360° Summer Connections behavior goals and will be looked upon as cause for termination with no refund of fees. All participants are expected to abide by the rules and regulations outlined in the current Dwight-Englewood School Handbook.

If a student wishes to receive credit for summer work, prior approval by that student’s principal or guidance counselor is necessary. Course descriptions and syllabi for advancement courses are available upon request.

Food

There are no prorated fees or refunds for campers arriving after the start of the session, leaving before its completion, or missing any time during camp. D-E 360° Summer Connections fees are non-transferable. Refunds will be made only with the presentation of a medical rejection slip or a doctor’s certificate before the camper is scheduled to attend camp.

Food is provided on campus through D-E’s Dining Services. We have two dining halls: one in Drapkin Hall for younger campers that will serve hot food and provide snacks and the other in the Klein Campus Center’s Wharton Lessin Dining Hall for Scholars, Enrichment, and Immersive participants. Hot lunch as well as bag lunches are included in the price for those students in the Discoveries, Adventures and full-day Immersive Programs. All other students as well as faculty and staff must either purchase their meals for a few dollars a day or bring their own lunch. For families’ convenience, SC offers a prepaid account option for campers to purchase lunch and snacks through the online registration process. The average cost of meals and snacks over the course of one week is $65. The minimum deposit in a pre-paid account is $30. Lunch fee is non-refundable. Accreditation Accreditation is provided by the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools for Dwight-Englewood School. D-E 360° Summer Connections is a member of the American Camp Association (ACA).

Course Credit Credit is awarded by Dwight-Englewood School in terms of units. Six units are the equivalent of one Carnegie credit and are awarded to major courses that meet five days a week during the

Schedule Changes For Enrichment students, once a class has begun, schedule changes may only be made by the end of the first day. Our Operations Team is available to help students make different selections.

“Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) Designated Courses Technology has become part of our program’s culture in all classrooms. Over the years, we have had an ever-increasing number of requests for students to bring their own devices to D-E 360° Summer Connections (SC) programs.

Since our goal is for all teachers to integrate authentic use of technology in classrooms, we are encouraging students to bring technology to SC for educational purposes.

Students in classes designated as BYOD will be expected to bring a laptop that meets minimum requirements or any brand Chromebook. A tablet with keyboard is also acceptable, but we find that the mobile platforms of these devices limit the functionality in some learning activities. Students who enroll in courses designated BYOD must identify during the registration process whether they commit to bringing a personal device to SC or whether they would need to have the program supply a device for the course.

Students may bring any brand Chromebook.

The Chromebook MUST have wireless internet to function. They may also bring a PC laptop with Microsoft Windows 7 or Windows 8 operating system, and minimum 4 GB RAM of memory. Antivirus protection is the owner’s responsibility. We currently allow Apple laptops purchased within the last three years. Although iPads and other model tablets are convenient for most purposes, the mobile apps do not provide some of the features needed in class.

Forms must have the doctor’s office official letterhead and address. Forms or letters should be scanned (preferably as PDF files) and uploaded to the registration portal. See directions below for uploading forms.

Immunization Policy

❙ Medical Action Plan. Children who require a medical action plan for food allergies, seizures, diabetes, asthma, or any other medical condition will need to have a copy of their action plan signed by a doctor.

Parents can submit the action plan provided to the child’s school or can complete on the templates provided and upload to the registration portal. See directions below for uploading forms.

D-E 360° Summer Connections (SC) is in accordance with the Dwight-Englewood School’s Immunization Policy: The health and safety of our campers is of paramount importance. Participants in SC programs are required to maintain age-appropriate vaccinations in compliance with the School’s immunization policy and NJ state law. For further information, please contact the D-E 360° Summer Connections Health Director, Holly Alasio before finalizing your registration.

Medical Forms The D-E 360° Summer Connections (SC) Team seeks to ensure that the children enrolled in every class, program and camp are happy, safe and well looked after while they are in our charge. In this vein, we require parents to provide us with their child(ren)’s medical history, specific health needs, and permission to administer emergency treatment.

The State of New Jersey requires the following information and forms for each child attending our programs. All forms are online at de360.d-e. org/summer.

❙ Permission to Treat form. Parental consent to administer emergency medical treatment. This is completed during the online registration process.

❙ Medication Authorization Form.

Children who require medication during the camp day – including an inhaler and/ or emergency EpiPen – must have a Medication Permission Form on file with SC Programs.

International student participants: Our programs are day programs and do not offer any residential options. However, some international students have chosen to travel with a group with local accommodations or stay with a relative and enroll in our programs.

All international students are required to meet the same standards for immunizations and other information. In particular, international immunization records need to include an up to date Mantoux test (TB test). All submitted forms – immunization records medication authorization and action plan forms must be scanned (preferably as a PDF) and uploaded to the online registration portal.

ALL REQUIRED MEDICAL FORMS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, BUT NO LATER THAN June 10, 2020. The earlier we have them the better for our medical staff.

Health & Safety ❙ Written health history. This is completed during the online registration process.

❙ Immunization form. All Summer Programs registrants must submit an immunization form. This must be a form from your doctor’s office OR a copy of a letter stating your exemption from immunization.

Summer is a great time for our campers, especially those in Grades 5-12, to explore their passions and interests beyond the norm of the classroom experience. Our programs, which include everything from gardening to crafts to electronics, provide direct hands-on

learning for our D-E 360° Summer Connections (SC) participants. The safety and security of all our campers is of the utmost concern. We hope you can help us by speaking with your child(ren) about what they might encounter while they are with us.

Tools, Equipment & Materials: Many of our offerings involve working with tools, equipment, and materials that may be new to some students. Our SC faculty/teaching assistants provide instruction and supervision to ensure Students are using this equipment and materials as safely as possible. In the event of injury, our SC Director of Health is available to assist.

Heat: With recent high heat indexes (related to high temperatures/humidity), our SC faculty and teaching assistants are especially focused on ensuring that students stay cool. Please talk with your child about the impact of heat.

Should he/she experience any of the following heat related symptoms, the student should reach out to the instructor and/or counselor immediately: confusion; dark-colored urine (a sign of dehydration); dizziness; fainting; fatigue; headache; muscle or abdominal cramps; nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea; pale skin; profuse sweating; rapid pulse/heartbeat.

Hydration: ❙ High heat indexes over the weeks of summer can also cause dehydration.

Students are strongly encouraged to arrive at camp with water canteens and to refill them often. We also have some re-usable SC water bottles for purchase. ❙ Water fountains are located in various locations around the D-E campus.

In addition, there is a water station above Leggett Field.

A subway line to 175th Street and transfer to the GWB Bus Station located at 4211 Broadway, between 178th & 179th Streets and Fort Washington Avenue. NJ Transit Bus 186 provides access to the Dwight-Englewood School campus.

❙ In addition to staying hydrated, students are encouraged to wear loosefitting, lightweight clothing in light colors.

❙ SC faculty and teaching assistants are also focused on reminding students to stay hydrated and be attentive to signs of dehydration, including excessively dry lips and tongue, sunken eyes, dizziness and/or loss of energy..

The schedule for D-E 360° Summer Connections 2020 runs from June 29 through August 7, 2020. For specific dates and times, please use our online Scheduling Tool or look in the the specific sections of our website by the Program and/or grade level indicated.

Sunscreen: We strongly urge SC parents to apply sunscreen on their children before bringing them to camp. Older students should consider bringing sunscreen to re-apply during the course of the day.

BUS TRANSPORTATION AVAILABLE TO MANY NJ COMMUNITIES AND MANHATTAN! Bus transportation to D-E 360° Summer Connections (SC) is offered as a weekly service.

The cost per student per week for pick up and drop off is $220 per student. There will be bus routes in both New Jersey and New York, including Manhattan in the following communities: ❙ ❙ ❙ ❙ ❙ ❙ ❙ ❙ ❙

Hours for the Dwight-Englewood School Middle and Upper School campus (for students enrolled in Junior Scholars, Enrichment, Scholars, and/or Immersive Programs) begin at 8:00 AM and on the Lower School campus (for students enrolled in the Discoveries and Adventures Programs) at 8:15 AM. To ensure supervision, students should not arrive earlier than this time. The Library and Dining Hall will open at 7:45 AM for all Enrichment and Scholars students arriving before class begins. We provide PreCare for Discoveries and Adventures students from 7:45 to 8:30 AM. After classes end, Enrichment and Scholars students may wait to be picked up at Umpleby Hall or inside of the Imperatore

Library. Please inform the SC Office if your child cannot be picked up by 3:45 PM and needs to register for AfterCare, which is open to children in any age group. Repeated lateness when picking up students will result in an additional $55 late fee or dismissal from SC.

Campus Access / Closed Campus Policy The Closed Campus policy means that visitors are not permitted during our summer programs.

Any exception to this policy must be arranged in advance. Students are not permitted to leave the campus for any reason other than programsponsored activities while attending D-E 360° Summer Connections.

PHOTOGRAPHY Photos (images) become the property of Dwight-Englewood School upon signing the application. Permission is granted for images to be taken of all students and used for promotional materials.

Summer Connections Discoveries & Adventures programs offer

age-appropriate activities that are carefully designed so that every child has a chance for observation and discovery. These full-day weekly programs (8:15 AM – 3:00 PM) offer academic courses that include Math, Language Arts, and Science. We also believe that creative endeavors should be a part of a young child’s life. As a result, performing and visual arts like music, dancing, painting, and storytelling constantly find themselves in the curriculum. To balance these activities, physical exercise in the form of physical education and recess are also included in the schedule. Dedicated faculty and an animated staff complete the picture by providing the children with a safe and fun atmosphere where children of all ages can grow. Be sure to sign up for Aftercare when registering for camps, if it is needed. If you have an emergency drop-in to Aftercare, it will be charged with a higher rate of $60 per day.

discovery and adventure as they examine GOAT (Greatest of All Time) moments, artifacts and structures. And it’s a Summer Olympics year; we’ll end the camp experience with our own Olympic-style field games. Our fun learning experiences will build foundations for literacy, creativity, and academic exploration. Equally important, our campers will master life lessons from their time here with us: 1) the meaning of cooperative work; 2) the impact of the past and how culture and technology have played roles in today’s world; and 3) a sense of wonder such that they develop a lasting appreciation of all our worlds - real and imagined.

Summer Discoveries (ages 3-6)

❙ Preschool (ages 3-6) ❙ $630/week (Week 1, June 29 - July 2 $510) ❙ Lunch/Snacks included This full-day weekly program (8:15 AM – 3:00 PM) is designed to foster independence and creativity. Serving children who are in preschool between the ages of 3 – 6, we want your child to stay engaged, experience varied activities, be challenged, and have a great time. Teachers and qualified assistants provide a stimulating environment. Surrounded by warm, enthusiastic staff members who specialize in early childhood, campers will enjoy air-conditioned classrooms in Drapkin Hall, which serves as their camp base as well as an outdoor playground, for large motor and water play fun. Children are introduced to various elements of the classroom such as practical life, cooking, sensorial activities, arts, crafts, music, and movement. Each week, new themes related to 2020 Visions of Greatness lead children to discover and explore basic concepts in science, math, language arts, geography, and other academic areas. Lunch as well as nutritious snacks are provided in the morning and afternoon. The price of special events are included, as are snacks and daily lunch. Summer Discoveries participants must be at least three-years old and also fully potty trained.

With a schedule that is centered around a three-day model, from 9:00 – 1:00, we offer preschoolers an opportunity to grow up with us.

We want to wow them each and every week they’re here—and leave them looking forward to Summer Connections in the future. That’s why each group’s schedule contains a balance of major program areas—sports, indoor gym for wet weather, outdoor adventure, gardening, and water play. They will participate in numerous other activities around camp, utilizing the full breadth and depth of our D-E campus. The prices of special events are included, as are snacks and daily hot lunch. Summer Discoveries Junior Day Camp participants must be potty trained. We require interested families to commit to a minimum of three weeks participation, and to confirm their enrollment by Friday, June 12, 2020. Enrollment is limited to 36 campers (12 per group).

The AfterCare Program is offered to campers in Pre-K through Grade 8.

Students enjoy a nutritious snack, planned and organized sports and activities, and the use of our computer and library facilities.

Note: To enroll your child in the daily AfterCare program, you must call the office before 1:00 PM that day. A $60 fee will be assessed on the child’s bill. Children picked up after 5:30 PM will be charged a substantial late fee ($5 per minute). If a child is repeatedly picked up late, he or she will no longer be able to participate in the AfterCare Program. Please call the office if you have questions.

Adventures Program (Grades 1-4)

❙ Grades 1-4 ❙ $670/week (Week 1, June 29-July 2 $550) ❙ Lunch/Snacks included The Adventures Program at D-E 360° Summer Connections is a full-day program (8:15 AM – 3:15 PM). Summer Adventures guides students through a variety of activities that focus upon building individual initiative and group participation. Activities include interdisciplinary theme-based enrichment experiences in academics and related arts. (See Typical Daily Schedules) Adventure campers will be exposed to a variety of learning experiences; studies may include interactive lessons on geography, wildlife, historical figures, measuring, and science experiments. Campers practice their presentation skills and gain confidence performing in Summer Showcases for their families and peers.

Our faculty prides themselves on making learning feel like it is all fun and games, while avoiding the academic summer slide. Our children get a break from their regular school routine, gain new friends, independence, and maturity in a memorable learning experience they will treasure.

Throughout the summer, our teachers break down the weekly theme into engaging lessons. Every week includes visits to our specialty areas that provide exploration of music, art, foods, Spanish, science, movement, and drama. Every Wednesday with Adventures will feature a field trip or a special onsite campus event. These activities are meticulously planned and are an important part of the magical experience that Adventures offers.

All children must have current medical and field trip forms submitted prior to attending Summer Connections. Weekly in-house and/or off-campus field trips and programs are organized for Adventures campers. Events are subject to change based on scheduling, availability, and weather. The price of field trips and special events are included, as are snacks and daily lunch. Throughout the week campers are scheduled for water play, recess, siesta, and organized games outside. Traditionally, Adventures hosts Spirit days, Color War activities, a Scavenger Hunt, and an End-of-Camp Field Day. D-E 360° Summer Connections brings together new and old friends each year; different adventures every week; and innovative learning every day.

Young Visionaries Experience 2020 July 13 - July 24 8:20 am - 3:30 pm $1245 (Lunch, Supplies and Field Trip Fees Included) Grades 2-6 D-E 360° Summer Connections Program is proud to offer our Young Visionaries Experience for the 6th year. In this exciting two-week Immersive Program, young artists will explore a wide variety of artistic mediums and subject matter and take a special trip to an art-inspired location. The workshops provided in the Young Visionaries Experience will bring students a combination of lessons in art-making techniques and the development of creative ideas. In a welcoming studio setting, collaboration with classmates will also be emphasized throughout the program. Expert teachers will guide students through hands-on projects in drawing, sculpture, woodworking, mixed-media, printmaking, and more.

Yoga/Movement: Each camp day will include three visual art workshop sessions, Acting class, and a lunch break. The Acting class will explore the craft of acting through improv and scene work. Students will also have recess and siesta before lunch to relax on the lawn with friends, read a book, sketch, or do group activities with our Young Visionaries teacher’s assistants. During the first week of the program, students will take a field trip to visit an art museum and other local sights. During the trip, students will create drawings inspired by works of art in the museum, which will later be enhanced in the studio.

At the completion of the Young Visionaries Experience, students will try their hand as curators by exhibiting their artwork at a culminating event. Parents, teachers, and students will gather together to celebrate the artistic accomplishments of program participants and make connections with one another over music and refreshments in the Young Visionaries Gallery.

In this course students will learn the practice of yoga and relaxation techniques. They will also engage in a range of sports and outdoor activities for physical fitness and well-being.

Acting: In this course students will explore the craft of acting through improv and scene work. They will practice making bold dramatic choices and using what they learn to write their own scenes to perform with their peers.

This course will introduce students to the Unity game development engine, where they will incorporate original 2D and 3D artwork into an original game. Cooking French food has never been easier. Learn how to make a variety of French classic found in cafés. Students will learn how to order food, how to read recipes and give each other in-

Week 4: Korean BBQ

Korean BBQ is taking the country by storm, one smokey grill at a time. Whether you're a kalbi-crushing aficionado or a rookie just getting your feet wet, students will learn the secrets to marinating and grilling. And the skills gained in class will make you look like you know what you're doing in front of all your friends and family when you’re hosting your own BBQ at home.

Week 5: Mangia Italia

Ah Italy...the sights, the sounds, the smells, the beauty, and most importantly...the food. The handmade pasta, the sauce that’s been simmering for hours, the perfectly crafted pizza margherita, they’re all ready for you to make. Come to Mangia Italia and someday you may even open your own Osteria.

Week 6: Sabores do Brasil

We’re venturing out to the South American continent to bring you Sabores do Brasil – the cuisines of arguably one of the most vibrant nations in the world. Brazilian food is packed full of delicious flavors like seasoned grilled meats, hearty, flavorful stews, and the most delicious condiments! We’ll be exploring hearty stews packed with beans and meat, delicious salads made with hearts of palm, treats fried in intensely flavored dende oil, and oh-so-delicious chimichurri.

Athletics courses engage students in physical activities to learn more about a variety of sports, activities, and games. Each week brings new learning as the instructors mix it up. by Olympic fencing coaches and exercise physiologists. Durkan coaches provide safe and effective training. Campers will be grouped throughout the summer according to age and skill level. To maximize the fun and development, each class includes a warm-up, stretching, instruction, drills, and modified games. For beginners, students will be introduced to the basics of sabre, épée, and foil. For experienced fencers, the Academy is designed to develop individual fencing skills in the participant’s weapon of choice. students having close collaboration with master level faculty as well as peers who are equally passionate about the topic. Immersives generally range from one week to two weeks in length. The students’ immersion in the topic of study over the course of a day is long enough to provide a depth of knowledge and skills building in the targeted areas. The experiences include three-day workshops in areas like art, media production, and coding to a ten-day workshop in theatre production. These workshops will provide different opportunities for you to learn how to be a communicator, build a team, be a better public speaker, and apply all of the tricks of the trade for effective leadership. Each week is focused on a different aspect of leadership.

Students will also learn how to strive to do their personal best, how to be true to themselves and how to make a positive difference in their schools, clubs and communities. All participants will travel together to do community service projects locally, applying the skills learned in the leadership workshops.

Each Friday, students will participate in a bit of a leadership summit in which we invite local leaders in to talk about their experiences connected to the particular leadership theory. The students’ week will culminate with reflective presentations about the theory studied and how the students might incorporate the skills learned and developed over the week into their lives. Calling all engineers and problem solvers! Students will work in project teams to complete a STEM challenge based on a selected theme. Students will learn and apply skills such as coding, 3D modeling, electronics, and design thinking to solve a problem that is both authentic and personally meaningful. The course will take place in the newly-constructed Hajjar STEM Center, and students will be using the best tools on the planet for learning electronics and design.

STAFF Marc Gladstone M.S.Ed. is currently the Lead Learning Specialist for the Dwight-Englewood High School. He has 30 years of public and independent school experience as a teacher, learning specialist, administrator and school consultant working with students with lagging academic skills, nuanced learning differences and specific learning and attention disorders. Marc has developed and taught a semester-long workshop for 9th grade students on the these topics at the Trinity School, Berkeley Carroll School, and Columbia and Grammar Preparatory School. Marc also holds New York State Certification in Special Education with a concentration in Learning Disorders.

Learn, create, perform… and jump start your musical summer with String Society 2020! Students will also take two private lessons with the esteemed faculty. String Society 2020 culminates with a Grand Finale Concert, on Thursday, July 2, 2020.

Diego Garcia (left), Annaliesa Place (right) ABOUT OUR DIRECTORS Diego Garcia (Associate Director of Strings/Conductor) (Cello) Born in Cali, Colombia, he entered the Antonio Maria Valencia Conservatory at the age of five, where he began his musical studies in piano, cello, and conducting. This set the stage for a multifaceted career as a performer, conductor, and educator. Over the past decade, Diego has become a sought-after composer for instrumental and choral works. His music has been broadcasted several times on NPR’s ‘Live from Hochstein’. Recent commissions have included the original score to the independent film Heart of Tango, Rochester Oratorio Society, and Gibbs & Main.

Currently, Diego is a conductor and cello instructor at D-E and he also serves as Orchestra Director of the JCC Thurnauer School of Music Symphony Orchestra.

Annaliesa Place (Director of Strings) (Violin) is a passionate performer and educator. She performs across the United States and abroad with various ensembles including the East Coast Chamber Orchestra (ECCO). She is featured on recordings with Absolute Ensemble for Sony Classical, ECCO for EOne Records, and Sting’s album Symphonicities. She is also featured in the 2019 Warner Bros. Movie, Western Stars with Bruce Springsteen.

Annaliesa has also performed and recorded with Peter Gabriel, Stevie Wonder, The Roots, Michael Bublé and Paul McCartney, among others. Ms. Place was featured in the Cleveland Orchestra’s first video conference with Alan Gilbert and was hailed by the Cleveland Plain Dealer as ‘the epitome of poise and intelligence.’ She is the Director of Strings at the Dwight-Englewood School in Englewood, New Jersey where she founded StringJam, a conductor-less string orchestra. As a curriculum consultant and lead teacher for Juilliard’s Global K-12 Programs, Annaliesa teaches at Summer Arts with Juilliard in Geneva, Switzerland.

Along with her husband, cellist Diego Garcia, they formed Bowstruck and made their debut on top of Aspen Mountain in June 2014. Ms. Place received a B.M. from Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and a M.M. from The Juilliard School. Her principal teachers have included Vasile Beluska, David Russell, David Updegraff, Victor Danchencko, and Robert Mann. *A limited number of scholarships are also available. Create visually exciting and interactive stories using code! Students will learn storytelling techniques along with coding to create digital narratives, using a program called Scratch. This course will provide students with an enriching experience, bringing new relevance to storytelling and narrative writing in a digital world. Students will share their ideas with each other and problem-solve together frequently throughout the process of writing and coding their stories. The Scratch program is a coding program that allows for students of all skill levels to be engaged and challenged, adding as much or as little detail to the visuals and dynamics of their stories. The essential question for the course would be "How can I use coding and storytelling techniques to create a story that is entertaining and visually appealing?" By the end of the course, students will have at least one coded story to share with whomever they'd like via a link.

Chemistry is often called the “Central Science.” In this course, you will make the connection between math and science. Scholars Advancement Courses Scholars advancement courses are intense and enable a student to complete a full year’s work in a few weeks. Students wishing to accelerate their studies may apply credit to fulfill graduation requirements or can use the course to fulfill prerequisites for more advanced courses. Students may only take one course for advancement and should expect to do two to four hours of homework daily, a test every two or three days, and at least five major labs. For more information about the content of Advancement courses, please contact the D-E360° Summer Connections Office in Leggett 001 or have a school official request the information.

For courses, which are taken for credit or advancement, evaluations consist of the letter grades A, B, C, D and F. Interim grades and comments will be mailed on Wednesday, July 15, 2020. Final grades and comments will be mailed on Friday, August 14, 2020.

Attendance in the Scholars Program is key and mandatory for final exams/projects.

No credit will be granted to a student who is absent more than three days for any reason. Repeated tardiness will result in the loss of academic credit and/or a lower grade. The Independence Day holiday will be observed on Friday, July 3. No classes will be held on Friday to celebrate the national holiday. Since the teachers are able to adjust their lessons to deliver the same experience in that week as any other week, the prices are not adjusted. The fee is based on the course offering and not a per diem cost.

From the forces that hold the nucleus of the atom together to those that form stars and galaxies, physics is the study of the foundations of our Universe. This course is an intensive, honors-level physics program covering typical first-year topics: motion in one and two dimensions, Newton’s Laws, energy, momentum, oscillations, waves, and electricity. Students will actively investigate relationships between measurable quantities in a laboratory environment to construct conceptual models that give structure to the physical phenomena we observe, and which form the basis of our understanding. As time permits, students may also learn and apply introductory programming techniques to create computer simulations of physical systems.
