REAL LIFE WEDDING IN CANADA

Bold & beautiful

For a fun and energetic vibe, oranges and greens decorated the venue. Six-foot tall paperflowers were used as centrepieces and ribbons of orange hung from the greenery on the ceiling

We needed a place

that was completely customisable because we wanted to create as many personal details as possible. Our venue was absolutely incredible — they gave us total freedom, and it allowed us to come up with ideas we never thought were possible, like splashing paint across the room and creating multiple hand-painted murals. We wanted the day to be intensely heartfelt and inclusive, and we thought the best way to do that would be to try and bring our family and friends into our world. That meant bright colours and fun bursts of paint that surrounded you on the ceiling and walls. Overgrown floral and paper flowers that almost reach out to touch you, and personal elements for guests to connect with individually were included too. From them crafting our signature cocktail to our friend painting a wall mural, we tried to include our loved ones in the design and experience as much as possible. The colours were there to give you energy and make you have fun — everyone included! We cried a lot that day, especially when we saw the ceremony and reception rooms for the first time. I never imagined a big wedding day, let alone a big white wedding dress! I was keen for something relaxed with a hippie flair. I felt 100% myself in my dress, meaning that I could be completely focused on my new husband. My makeup was natural, with my hair framed with a floral crown. The overall feel was boho chic. Chris’s look was all built around his bow tie, which he had custom-made using the material from the blazer of his school uniform as he met me in high school! Since the material was navy blue, he had a tuxedo made in dark green to complement it.

REAL LIFE WEDDING IN UK

Nickie’s top tip

Expect things to not always go to plan, but remember it will still be a perfect day! Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions and make sure to keep in contact with everyone involved

As we live in

Central London, we wanted something a little more peaceful for our wedding. I have always fancied a beach ceremony and we did consider marrying abroad, but realised a lot of our guests may not be able to join us. When we saw Tunnels Beaches featured online, I realised we could have our destination wedding without the travel. Tunnels Beaches was the first and only venue we visited. We knew straight away that it was where we should marry — I had tears in my eyes. It had everything we wanted: the beach, views, intimacy and originality. However, the best bit was that it was on Granville Road — my maiden name! There was very little decorating to do as the venue is already set up for the perfect beach wedding. Our florist decorated the area around where we were married to match my bouquet and it looked absolutely stunning. I found my dress on Etsy from a woman called Carol Pincott. She is based near Bristol so I had to make a few trips from London for fittings, but it was worth the travel! Carol was able to take her original pattern from her Etsy shop and incorporated my ideas to make my very own bespoke dress. As I wanted a boho 60’s vibe, I felt pastel colours best suited that. I wanted to go for a shabby chic theme and I did this through my rounded bouquet with pink Gerberas, the flowers and bridesmaids dresses, which all complemented each other wonderfully! For my hair, I wore it down since I never wear it up! My makeup was natural but I had to have my signature black eyeliner flicks.

Carlotta’s top tip

Talk to your future spouse and learn what he/she would like — even things that seem unattainable. Afterwards, trust a good wedding planner to make your dreams come true

I have been living

in London for a few years, but I’m originally from Parma. William and I dreamed of hosting our guests in my home country, famous for good food, hot summer days and cool nights with the sweet symphonic sounds of cicadas. We wanted to let our guests come from all over the world, a unique cultural and culinary experience in total relaxation. The city of Parma and its province offers numerous suggestions for pleasant trips to the discovery of numerous traditional architectural works and traditional ‘Locande’. For the budget, I entrusted our wedding planner, Antonella Zamboni of TDL Events, to meet our cost demands. We evaluated what we couldn’t leave out and what we didn’t need, but in the end, we had everything we had dreamed of. I found my dress in Parma — it was like love at first sight. I dreamed of an elegant dress that was also a bit sexy. I wanted to be daring with a backless style and I chose this very stylish fabric that contrasted well with my tattoos. In the months leading up to the wedding, my hairdresser studied the structure of my face and took good care of my hair to create the perfect style. My make-up was decided by taking into consideration the hot Italian summer afternoon. It worked well as my make-up was perfect until the end of the night! We thought that our biggest challenge would be the distance, arranging a wedding away from the place that it would be celebrated. However, with the help of our planner, we did not have any difficulties as she always kept us updated on time frames. We had a team of professionals from the start. They showed us their style and we fell in love with the thought of being followed by them throughout our special day. Their team specialises in destination weddings and know how to handle couples of different nationalities that want to make their dream of getting married in Italy a reality.

REAL LIFE WEDDING IN CANADA

Jennifer’s top tip

Plan far ahead as you want as many of your guests to be able to attend as possible. Ensure others have the time to make arrangements, book accommodations, and make the proper plans

We knew we wanted

to do something different, which led us to the idea of having a winter wedding. Being from Vancouver, the weather is mild, and planning for a snowy day would have been risky. Deciding to have a mini destination wedding in Whistler was a no-brainer. The weather conditions were perfect, and it was close enough for guests to be able to attend, but far enough to make it seem like we were getting a weekend away. Once we chose to have our wedding in Whistler, we knew that we had to take advantage of the mountains and scenic views. Nita Lake Lodge was so beautiful, we knew straight away that it was where our wedding was going to be. I thought I knew the exact dress I wanted, but it turns out that it really wasn’t the one! I tried on so many different styles and finally found my perfect dress. For my hair and beauty looks, I wanted something simple and low maintenance. I decided on a dressed up ponytail and slightly more dramatic makeup. The venue itself didn’t need much décor. It was full of wood, stone and other natural materials. We decided to concentrate on the tables by incorporating long garlands, hundreds of candles, and personalised table settings. In order to emphasise the height and architecture of the space, we draped fabric to mimic the look of an arch, and surrounded it with candles as the ceremony occurred just as the sun was setting. The biggest challenge was having to bring a lot of the specialty items we wanted to use (including the long tables) up to Whistler. It was fairly stressful packing and repacking the rental truck to ensure everything was accounted for as well as labelled and organised so our planners could find everything they needed on the day of.

The individual wood chargers, backdrop and metal escort cards were all handmade

FASHION BRINGING SEXY BACK

Randy Fenoli

Backless gowns have become increasingly popular, especially for summer. Expose just a little extra skin with a keyhole back, or show off with a completely backless gown. Cut-outs have been one of the hottest trends in both formal and casual dresses, as they can be extremely flattering and add a touch of allurement to the style.

SLEEVES

So which type of sleeve is right for you? Long, sheer sleeves down to the wrist are the perfect choice if you’re planning a winter wedding. If you want the elegance of a sleeve without feeling too covered up, another fashionable choice is the three-quarter length sleeve. This is a flattering length that stops just below the elbow and shows off the slimmest part of your arm. Even shorter sleeves include the t-shirt cut, which stops mid upper-arm, and the cap sleeve, which is shorter than a regular sleeve and just adds a little bit of fabric to your shoulder straps.

SHOULDERS

For a glamorous alternative to a strapless dress, choose the right style of shoulder to match. Shouldered wedding dresses provide the illusion of a more conservative wedding day look. Highlight your features or complexion with an off-theshoulder dress where the shoulders are visible. Alternatively, try a gown with ruffles draped over shoulders to create a princess look.

Julie Vino Venezia

Chantal Haute Couture

Mira Zwillinger

While the fullness of ball gowns and floor-skimming skirts have become the beloved styles of the wedding world, bridal runways have witnessed various hemlines for brides looking to subvert the norm. From knee-length gowns to high-low hems, unique wedding dresses have gained popularity. Short dresses are perfect for more casual ceremonies or beach getaways. Ankle length, or tea length hemlines are ideal for those brides who want to show off their shoes!

ELEGANT NECKLINES

CORSETS AND TOPS

Randy Fenoli

Nicole

Many brides opt for a traditional neckline, however more and more are seeking plunging neck corsets or separate tops. It is vital to choose a style that highlights your best assets, and there is a wide-range of corsets to suit all body types. A corset bodice offers gorgeous vintage looks for your special day.

Nicole

Chantal Haute Couture

YolanCris Haute Couture

One of the most classic styles is the sweetheart neckline. A distinctive heart-shaped style that accentuates a generous bust and is perfect for the brides wanting to enhance their curves. High-neck gowns are ultra-elegant and regal, perfect for brides looking to exude a timeless style.

BRAIDED BEAUTY

For this boho-bride look, start the Dutch braid from behind the ear and pivot around the head as you take each section of the hair. To finish, secure the end with a rubber band and grip into place around the head. Pull the braid out as much as you like for a chunkier effect or leave out some wispy pieces around the hairline for a softer look. Spray with Oribe fine hairspray to finish the style.”

RUSTIC DREAM

Prep hair using mousse and then set it using heated rollers or a medium tong. Leave the curl in and pin them by securing each roll with a clip. Once cool, release all hair. Go back through hair in the front area and curl hair in random directions with a smaller tong to create an uneven texture and then backcomb roots all over. Leaving hair around the hairline and nape out, band two sections of hair at the occipital bone to create a base to pin remaining hair into. Pull back front sections of hair into place and grip. Then begin to twist and knot sections towards the banded hair and grip in place. Finish with a medium/ flexible hold hairspray.”

AUSTRIA

Nestled amongst the Tyrolean Alps and oozing an ambience of elevated glamour, arlberg1800 RESORT is a skier’s paradise. Yet with world-class wine cellars and astounding artistic displays, the resort proves itself as much more than just a winter wonderland retreat www.dwha.co.uk

the hotel is like walking through time, a perfect fusion of traditional décor with contemporary additions. History is written across the walls: past photographs of the hotel and local area are abundant, while a mural in the chapel states those of the brotherhood — a charitable organisation to help those in need — who have passed.

T

here is something magical about the arlberg1800 RESORT. Perhaps it is due to the façade of the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel, reminiscent of a fairytale castle, the welcoming nature of the people, or the postcardperfect backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Most likely, I believe, it is the combination of these elements and more that conjures an almost indescribable atmosphere. Even as someone who hadn’t skied before or holidayed to winter destinations, I was captivated by the resort.

Superior setting

arlberg1800 RESORT is situated in the secluded village of St. Christoph. Coined as the highest village on the Arlberg, St. Christoph stands at an astounding 1800-metres and is located in the biggest snowfall region in the Alps. It is this great draw that entices many skiers, snowboarders and winter sport fanatics each year. Despite my visit coinciding with the approach of end of season, a 48-hour flurry covers the landscape with a thick blanket of snow, transforming the resort into a winter wonderland. It is almost as if it is the start of the season once more. Approaching the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel, its pale pink exterior catches my eye against the clean whites of the mountain. The prominent steeple juts from the heart of the hotel, indicating the location of the resort’s very own chapel. Inside, the hotel is exceptionally welcoming, embodying a typically traditional Austrian style. It emits an aura of effortless luxury, without pretentiousness or unnecessary extravagance. Having been owned by three generations of the Werner family, family photographs and pieces of art adorn the interior, giving it a homely vibe. Walking through

I stayed in the luxurious Royal Suite. To reach this part of the hotel, a separate lift is required from the main one in the lobby. The adventure it takes just to reach this suite gives the room an element of seclusion and privacy. Inevitably, the suite itself is exquisite. Wooden doors open to a spacious hallway, leading on to two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, and walk-in wardrobe. Despite its vast size, the suite retains a cosy-feel, amplified by the home comforts of paintings on the walls, satellite TVs and stereo equipment in every room. The Royal Suite certainly bids a warm welcome for my time here.

Magnificence in the mountains

Inevitably, one of largest attractions of the resort is the snow sports. The new network of cable car systems extends to multiple areas — including the classic ski hub of St. Anton — making the Arlberg Austria’s largest inter-connected ski resort. Ideal for beginners and experienced skiers alike, the area is home to an astonishing total of 340km pistes at blue, red and black levels. Those looking to ski, or learn to ski, offpiste, will rejoice to hear that St. Christoph itself is renowned for having some of the best off-piste terrain in the world. Being a beginner myself, I was incredibly lucky with the weather conditions during my visit. My instructor was extremely helpful, not just in teaching me to ski, but also ensuring that we perfect the techniques. The breath-taking scenery that encompasses the resort is truly enchanting, particularly from the tops of the slopes and the lifts. Gazing across the snow-capped mountains, the view seemed almost surreal — as if I was looking at a piece of art, rather than the world in front of me. However, it is not just the natural landscape that makes the resort beautiful. Creativity resonates throughout arlberg1800 RESORT, enforced by the Werner family — who are keen

patrons of the arts — incorporating spectacular sculptures, paintings and other impressive pieces throughout the hotel. Heading to the basement level of the traditional hotel, a wide corridor leads to the recently opened Contemporary Art and Concert Hall. Named Europe’s highest arts space, uniting artists, musicians and composers from across the globe, the hall is beautifully striking. The modern, open space contrasts the traditional Austrian décor of the main part of the hotel, giving the impression that I have walked into another world. After a day on the slope, spending your evening at the concert hall, witnessing extraordinary talent from around the world, certainly sounds like an ideal day.

Getting Hitched

If the allure of getting married in the mountains forms the basis of your dream wedding, then look no further than arlberg1800 RESORT. Unique from other hotels, the resort is home to a picturesque chapel dating back to the 1300’s. Therefore, a religious ceremony can be hosted on site with no need for guest transportation to the reception. The quaint Arlberg Hospiz Hotel Chapel embraces the tradition and heritage of the resort, establishing the location as a picturesque venue for an intimate wedding. Alternatively, couples can opt for a picturesque outdoor ceremony. The mountainous backdrop is idyllic covered in snow and luscious in summer.

much more!

The resort is host to numerous restaurants and spaces that are ideal for a jubilant wedding reception celebration. One of the largest is the exceedingly popular Hospiz Alm Restaurant. Upon entering, wedding photographs from couples that have previously married at the resort line the walls. Inside, culinary delights await in a space that’s both large, cosy and epitomises the Alpine lifestyle. The outside area also consists of a sun terrace, where guests can toast the newlyweds and witness the majestic mountainous scenery. Beneath the restaurant lies the Big Bottle Wine Cellar, home to the world’s largest collection of wines in special large bottles. This impressive size allows the wine to mature slower than in standard bottles, ultimately making them more durable. A special touch of the cellar is to enter by gliding down the slide. Why not purchase one of the large bottles on your wedding day and then return on your anniversary to have a glass from the same bottle once more? There is no dispute — arlberg1800 RESORT is an utterly romantic destination and truly enviable venue for your wedding, honeymoon or romantic getaway. However, more than that, it is a home away from home and certainly one that I would like to return to again.

DESTINATIONS

T

he Italian Riviera, synonymous with the Liguria region, is a crescent-shaped strip of Mediterranean coastline straddling between the South of France and Tuscany. This spell-binding region has an abundance of natural beauty and the various names given to it such as “Paradise Gulf”, “Siren bay”, “Bay of fairy tales”, “Sea’s echo”, are all tributes to the alluring qualities of these marine landscapes. When it comes to fine-dining, the Italians are unquestionably the masters and Liguria is testimony to this, with its quintessential fat anchovies, fragrant lemons, olive oil-rich focaccia bread and the birthplace of the worldrenowned pesto sauce. From the sands of Ponente to the cliffs of Levante, an endless promenade runs alongside the Ligurian Sea. The breathtaking views of the Italian Riviera have been admired and celebrated by painters, poets and writers of all ages, from Lord Byron to Shelley to Hemingway. The Italian Riviera unveils its gems one by one, starting from the east with the globally famous Cinque Terre and the enchanting villages of Portofino, Santa Margherita, Rapallo. As you progress to the west you will find the historic province of Genoa and the city of flowers, Sanremo, famous its flower-filled promenade and Casino. Wherever you choose to celebrate your wedding in Liguria, you can be assured that it will be an excellent start to your happy ending.

Legendary Cinque Terre

A destination with timeless appeal. Along a beautifully isolated six-mile stretch of the most seductive corner of the northern Italian coast lies Cinque Terre or ‘Five Lands’. Set like jewels in the Ligurian Coast, discover Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore — the five villages that make up this diamond destination. The unsurpassed charm of Cinque Terre and famous Via dell’Amore panoramic footpath (Path of Love) beckons young lovers from all over the world. Be drawn in to this enchanting trail at sunrise or sunset and seal your love forever with a lock. The passion extends beyond a padlock, with declarations of love written on walls, boulders, benches and even scratched in to the cactus plants which grow out of the cliffs!

Crowned a UNESCO World Heritage site, Cinque Terre is an unmissable stop for newlyweds with its candy-coloured homes, narrow stone walkways and sweeping Ligurian Sea vistas. It is the kind of place that rewards taking it slow, whether you’re kicking back at a waterfront café sipping an expresso with a traditional biscotti, or simply indulging in each other’s company with a glass of Sciacchetrà dessert wine (native to the region) on your private balcony.

Posh Portofino

beams style, elegance, sophistication and splendour, with the likes of Humphrey Bogart, Sophia Loren and Princess Grace of Monaco frequenting this chic town. Everywhere you walk your eyes will take in superb views of the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains of Corsica can be enjoyed with your sweetheart from the summit of Monte Portofino, which stands tall over the village. Journey through the secret coves and serene sights of Portofino and walk to the Punta del Capo and the Castello Brown, which sits above the village and provides the perfect opportunity for exploring the Botanical Gardens. Another great walk is towards the medieval Castello di San Giorgio, one of the most outstanding marvels in Portofino along with its panoramic gardens and exclusive views! Portofino has a pretty, picture-perfect harbour with great restaurants and boutiques selling Italian lace, beautifully strung along the waterfront. One of the greatest pleasures of Portofino is simply relaxing as newlyweds with a bottle of prosecco, in the beautiful surroundings and enjoying the lovely Mediterranean climate. A wedding in Portofino is undoubtedly the height of glamour.

Santa Margherita

Offering everything you could wish for in a seafront wedding from lush palm trees, elegant seaside cafes, flower bedecked pathways and an immaculate backdrop for your special day snaps. If you are seeking a honeymoon haven, this a fabulous place to start. We recommend this brightly-coloured town as an ideal base from which to explore the rest of the Italian Riviera, from Portofino to the bucolic Cinque Terre. It is perfect for planning day trips to these nearby hotspots and for a place to call home. Luxury villas and charming boutique hotels abound. Enjoy strolling through the ancient quirks of this area by visiting the old buildings that still display elaborate frescoed decorations in the trompe l’oeil style (a particular feature of this part of the Riviera).

Glorious Genoa

Capital of Liguria, Genoa is known as “La Superba” (the Superb One) owing to its abounding historical attractions and rich cultural fabric. In the dense network of narrow

The vestiges of the past live on in the shape of sixteenth-century villas, Baroque style architecture, magnificent churches and small squares. Genoa’s showpiece buildings include the San Lorenzo Cathedral and Piazza de Ferrari, the city’s most famous square boasting cafés, restaurants and a gorgeous fountain in the centre. A land of contrasts that are so harmoniously linked to one another, the coast of Genoa is a marvel with which few places in the world can compete.

Picturesque Portovenere

Translating to the ‘Port of Venus’, this is a cute and colourful town that oozes romance from every harbour. This tiny fishermen’s village dates back to the 12th century, and is situated on a small peninsula that wades out into the glistening waters of the Mediterranean Sea and into the Gulf of Poets. The town enjoys a panoramic position — in particular the Gothic church of San Pietro, constructed on a massive rock and proudly showing off its striking black and white façade that can be seen from land or sea. If it sounds like the perfect ‘I do’ spot, rest assured your wedding photos will reflect the charm and romantic setting that surrounds you and loved ones.

The Pinnacle of

Paradise MALDIVES Few places can match the magic of the Maldives, for it is nothing less than simply enchanting

Where to stay

N

ot only does the Maldives offer azure waters, it’s also brimming with antique traditions, divine dishes, mesmerising marine life and adrenaline-pumping sports. The Maldives is an intriguing country, consisting of 26 coral atolls and spanning across 1,000km. Much of the Maldives heritage is influenced by its fusion of cultures — Arabic, Indonesian, Malaysian, African, French and Creole. Unquestionably the islands’ winning assets are the sugar-white sand beaches and surrounding ocean, making it honeymooners first choice.

Famed for its glistening blue waters, unblemished white sand beaches and lush greenery, Furaveri Island Resort & Spa is a sublime wedding location and exotic haven for honeymooners. Awaken your adventurous spirit with a banana boat ride on the outer reef of Furaveri Island or hire a Jet Ski! And as the sun begins to set, enjoy a romance-filled catamaran cruise (furaveri.com).

MULTI-CULTURAL SPIRIT

Located south-west of Sri Lanka and India, the Maldives dazzles visitors with its array of cultures, making it such a diverse destination to explore. As one would expect, there is a great Asian influence in Maldivian cuisine and this is most proudly presented through a selection of signature curries. These tend to be spicy and exotic, using coconut milk and fish, accompanied with ‘roshi’ (a thin flatbread). Those who aren’t fans of curry will also find freshly-caught seafood, island-grown fruits and European dining options. Let’s just say all tastes buds are lovingly catered for. When it comes to cultural arts, the Maldives has retained music rituals such as traditional drumming and dancing (known as ‘boduberu’) which derives from early African settlers. With the waves of the Indian Ocean establishing the rhythmic beating, feel free to give in to temptation and dance the night away, under the moonlight.

UNDER THE SEA

The Maldives can be aptly described as an open air aquarium, given that 99% of the country is made up of water. Turtles, manta rays and rainbow fishes are year-round guests of these waters. Thanks to the abundance of marine life, it’s not hard to understand why the Maldives is accredited as one of the world’s top destinations for snorkelling and diving. Begin with a whizz over the Indian Ocean in your very own private speed boat, then dive in to the cyan-blue waters to see the tropical sea wonders that lurk below. For beginners and experienced divers alike, there are numerous dive sites such as Biyadhoo, Villingili and Ukulhas; each offering unparalleled opportunities to come eye to eye with beguiling sea creatures. This is a must-do experience that promises to deliver a romantic underwater glide for you and your loved one.

Newlyweds can wear flowers behind their ears, as Tahitian tradition states that it symbolises that men or women are taken. Couples can take part in ancient traditions and festivities by attending the island’s annual Heiva festival in July. The most iconic event in Tahiti for the past 122 years, islanders gather in the cosmopolitan capital, Papeete, to display their crafts, compete in ancient sporting events and recreate elaborate dance performances accompanied by rhythmic drums, conch shells and harmonic nasal flutes. The true heart of Papeete is its 155-year-old lively and colourful public market, Le MarchÊ. With stands filled with Tahitian crafts, oils, vanilla, fruits and flowers, couples can spend the day finding one-of-a-kind ornaments and sampling delicious local foods. The lush and manicured Harrison W. Smith Botanical Garden in Papeari is another stunning backdrop that should not be missed. A Day in the Life of an expert Wedding Planner

Alejandra Poupel of Alejandra Poupel Events discusses her agency — a Paris-based company that specialises in high-end, bespoke weddings all across Europe and the globe

I AM NICARAGUAN-BORN, but was raised in Miami and fell in love with a Frenchman, so I have been in Paris for 23 years. My forte is that the agency has built relationships with the best vendors that deliver an excellent quality of service. We have discerning international clientele and have built a reputation for creating bespoke luxury weddings and events. I think a main point to our services is discretion. All our vendors sign social media policies to ensure that our clients have optimal discretion to respect their wishes. I AM INCREDIBLY ENRICHED by all the amazing traditions and details that my clients share with me to make their event special. For example, my Arabic clients have taught me the importance of perfumes, when we created personalised scents for all the guests. The bright and vibrant colours of my Indian clients have inspired me to include strong oranges and purples in other events. I also enjoy getting very close to the family during the planning process through collaboration. It is so fun as we transform dreams into a reality with fabulously talented artists in floral design, event design and caterers. I always miss my clients when the wedding is over. ON A TYPICAL DAY, I start early. I am addicted to sports, so I usually work out doing zumba, yoga or tennis. I then head

168

to my office and have a meeting with my Project Managers to plan out the week. However, most of my time is spent with clients, discussing their vision and getting to know them. I am in constant contact with our creative partners, orchestrating and coordinating to make sure all details are perfected before the event. Our team travels to constantly search for new technology and out of the box ways to dazzle our clients. Living in Paris, we are very lucky to be able to assist many fashion shows that are ahead of the game in event design and new trends. We visit expositions and art fairs, constantly being inspired by art installations and beauty everywhere. Today’s brides also have access to the amazing tools of technology, such as Aisle Planner (aisleplanner.com) for timelines and Perfect Table Plan (perfecttableplan.com) for seating arrangements. The many online blogs are ideal for inspiration and we are featured on a variety, including Wedded Wonderland (weddedwonderland.com) and Style Me Pretty (stylemepretty.com). WEDDINGS ARE VERY EMOTIONAL and the union of two families from different cultures can be tricky. In a sense we are not only planners, but also psychologists. We try and mediate to have each family’s values and authenticity shine through. We strive to be one step ahead so that our clients are relieved of as much stress

PLANNING

Alejandra’s favourite venues PARIS, FRANCE Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte (vaux-le-vicomte.com) PROVENCE, FRANCE La Bastide de Gordes (bastide-de-gordes.com) FLORENCE, ITALY Palazzo Corsini, (palazzocorsini.it)

as possible and enjoy each moment. Every wedding is very special for different reasons, but a wedding we organised in a castle close to Paris stands out because the bride really wanted a fairy-tale wedding. Everyone really got a taste of how aristocrats lived in the 1700’s. From the Elie Saab dress that was fit for a princess to the horse and carriage arrival with fireworks reflected in the water, it was moving to see the guests transported to a different time period. However, the wedding still retained a modern element. We danced all night long to a headline DJ and band, surrounded by 1,500 candles in the gardens. PARIS IS THE CITY OF ROMANCE AND LIGHTS, there’s a postcard-worthy picture everywhere you look. Our venues, such as the Musée Rodin and Opera de Paris, are so gorgeous that it makes my job easier. In Paris we have built many relationships that allow us to organise one-ofa-kind experiences, including private museum visits, or an excursion to a jewellers in Place Vendôme to see stones being shaped, and of course couture fashion experiences. CHOOSING THE RIGHT PLANNER is all about the connection between you both — you need a coordinator that you click with and who gets you. It is important to

“ We danced all night long to a headline DJ and band, surrounded by 1,500 candles in the gardens ”

be able to trust them since the planner has to get to know the bride and groom extremely well. You should look at their past work and see if it is a signature style that you identify with. In my case, clients are looking for a world-class event that is glamorous and cutting-edge, yet shines through the authenticity and personality of the couple in the details. We love working with all cultures and religions, and feel enriched by it. From having a groom that asked for a 50-piece Philharmonic set for their ceremony to building a butterfly sanctuary with species from 17 different countries for a bride that loves butterflies, we thrive on challenges (alejandrapoupel.com).

Celebrate with your

Celebrant

Do you want the freedom to customise the process of declaring of your vows in any location across the globe? Celebrants can do just that for you! Here’s all you need to know to achieve the wedding of your dreams What is a Celebrant?

A Wedding Celebrant is a trained professional who will conduct your marriage, Civil Partnership or renewal of vows without the restrictions of any licensed premises, such as a church, chapel or Registry Office. Their tasks include creating, writing and directing the ceremony. The rite is not legal but could be religious or secular, depending on your customs, beliefs and values. This type of wedding ceremony can also be described as a Wedding Blessing. They will provide you with a custom made ceremony including the exchanging of rings and writing of vows, where you can incorporate your own style and designs. Essentially, Wedding Celebrants are there to make sure your day is calm, relaxed and stress free.

All the info

Before the wedding ceremony can take place, you must register your marriage by completing all the legalities. This means that you

172

DWHA || july / august

must take a trip to your local Registry Office and state your declaratory or contracting words. You will then receive a marriage or civil partnership certificate in an appointment with two witnesses. If you are planning to have a destination wedding, you may want to take part in a brief legal marriage in your home country a few months before your official wedding day in your dream location. The ceremony can be located wherever you and your partner wish, whether the venue be indoor or outdoor. Unique and personalised elements can be incorporated, from modern civil ceremonies to traditional religious ones.

Personalise your ceremony

Celebrants let you have your ceremony your way. You are no longer restricted by the choice of ceremony and licensed venues. Hiring a Wedding Celebrant gives you the freedom to be creative and adorn your wedding with additional touches. You can separate the legal from the ceremonial aspect, for a truly bespoke wedding. The venue can be anywhere — a wildflower meadow, garden, by a fishing cove, on a secluded beach or on a striking cliff-top! If your perfect wedding venue does not have a Civil Marriage Licence, don’t fret — choose a Wedding Celebrant to make it happen!

Freedom to choose

The restrictions of using a Local Authority Registrar in a licensed venue includes the choice of wording, music, spiritual content, as well as where and how the ceremony takes place. A Celebrant will write an intimate ceremony script for you and your partner, whereas a Registrar will fill in the gaps of a standard ceremony script. The Celebrant is the epitome of a special and treasured wedding! The ceremony can be conducted in a licensed or unlicensed venue, and vows can be traditional, or you can write your own. Registrars may only give couples three options of wedding vows, limiting the spontaneity of the declarations of love. Finally, Celebrants will get to know you and your beloved as they plan the wedding, whereas a Registrar will only meet you on the day. This ultimately means that the ceremony can reflect you and your love in the best way possible.

Becoming a Wedding Celebrant

If you are passionate about cherishing milestones and adore the thought of creating, writing and leading weddings, a career as a Wedding Celebrant could be for you! This exceptionally rewarding career requires completion of a training course to become fully qualified. There are many training providers all over the world that offer high quality national qualifications. The Fellowship of Professional Celebrants is the largest organisation in the UK for Independent Celebrants, providing world-class certification and training for all members. The training programme that you must complete in order to become a Wedding Celebrant is a Certificate in Marriage & Family Celebrancy, which is a 2-day-course. Choosing a Celebrant is an important decision that will shape the your beautiful wedding day! They will take into account yours and your partners’ personality, lifestyle and beliefs to ensure that your wedding day, civil partnership or renewal of vows is as unforgettable, romantic and divine!

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Foreign guidelines, rules and essentials

H

ere is DWHA’s at-a-glance-style checklist for all of the required and advised documentation you’ll need for your destination wedding. We have put together details on the majority of the world’s wedding hotspots so that you’re in the know and ready to start sending out those ‘Save The Date’ cards. Here you’ll find up-to-date information tailored to each country on key areas, such as medical and vaccination advice, flight times and legal requirements. This section provides guidance on whether your marriage can take place in the country of your choice, and, importantly, whether it will be valid in British and international law. Remember, rock royalty Mick Jagger overlooked a technicality at his Hindu wedding to Jerry Hall in Bali — the union was not actually legally recognised in this country. With the help of your guide, you can start to gather all of the relevant paperwork. You may decide to employ a destination-wedding planner, who is either based here or in the country you are marrying in. A reputable planner will advise you on all the paperwork you need to ensure your marriage is legal for a one-off fee starting around £200. Other vital considerations include visa requirements and residency. Residency refers to the number of days or house you are required to reside in the country before your wedding ceremony. It can vary from no residency required, to a number of months. Residency is not to be confused with ‘waiting

period’. This refers to the time period between notifying the church/town hall/venue of your intention to marry, and the ceremony taking place. ‘Know Before You Go’ will equip you with all the all the essential facts you need to start planning for the most important journey of your life. We compiled this guide by doing direct research with the embassies of the countries included in the section. With a little planning, you and your groom could soon be jetting off and enjoying the wedding of your dreams! This section should be treated as a guide, rather than definitive legal advice. Marriage laws are subject to change. This guide assumes that both parties in the couple are British or European citizens. Please seek further advice on documentation and other requirements from the embassy and local registry office of the country you are travelling to. For further info, visit www.gov.uk/marriage-abroad. Medical and legal advice can be found at www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk and www. solicitors.lawsociety.org.uk.

F

ounded in 2012 by Londeners Peter Mulhall and Martin Bell, Donhall & Bell offer an alternative flair to mainstream footwear. Creating luxury men’s slippers and shoes that radiate character, elegance and attitude, the brand celebrate individual style and design. The label’s signature piece is the D&B Slipper — a sleek, modern spin on a timeless menswear classic. You can create your very own unique pair of shoes with the Bespoke Slippers range, offering a choice between custom and premium options. Brand Ambassador for Donhall & Bell, Daniil Kolmin wore a bespoke pair of brand slippers on his wedding day to Australian ballet dancer Stephanie Goldhahn. Also a professional ballet dancer, Daniil Kolmin was born in Novosibirsk, Russia to a family also in the profession. When he was growing up, his father’s dancing inspired him to fall in love with performance art. Daniil has toured the world with his profession for over ten years, dancing in Australia, New Zealand, China and Europe.

It’s a match

Pair the colours of your footwear to your accessories. Daniil’s bow tie brings out the red in his shoes
