Editor-in-Chief’s Letter Dear brides and grooms, First, of all, congratulations! You’re entering the most exciting time of your life and we are so thrilled to help you as much as we can along the way. As the holiday season comes to a close, we are thinking about all that 2019 will hold. We’re making travel plans, scouring bridal trends and looking forward to all the beautiful moments that will make this year better than ever. To truly live is to understand what makes each day special and if you constantly seek the things that both challenge and excite you, I promise you will make each day count! The weather has turned extra frosty here in London, but while we are pulling our warmest coats from the closet, we’re also admiring all the beautiful snowy wedding photography, which we’ve included in this issue along with our favourite wintertime pastimes. From skiing to pamper sessions as well as destination holidays that will whisk you away to someplace warm, we’re thrilled to embark on this journey with you. Don’t miss our wintry fashion section, which highlights cosy faux fur and to keep you warm from the city to the slopes. We’ve also included a little Valentine’s Day gift guide because no matter what stage you are at, love should be cherished... and on that note, so should you! Some of the best pampering treatments are right here in London, but if you aren’t from here, we’ve also rounded up our favourite nourishing products to give your skin and confidence a boost in these cold months. Now that the holidays are over, this is the perfect time to really care for your health and melt away all the stress of party planning. Before you begin your honeymoon search, have a look through our favourite destinations, which highlight serene countries like Seychelles. A few days on the sand will do you a world of good, trust me! The cultural haven of Guatemala is another one of our favourite holidays, offering a vast array of landscapes, delicious food and top-notch wedding planner Diana Sciarillo. We’ve spoken with Diana as well as Austrian-based wedding planner Doris Wallner about their biggest tips for planning your own beautiful event, so don’t miss their exclusive interviews...

While not traditional wedding attire in any sense of the word, the Dior Haute Couture A/W collection this year has stolen our hearts and inspired dreams of tying the knot in pink feathers, beaded cream chiffon or perhaps even a gold lamé power suit. In our opinion, this collection has it all: a navy blue conservative midi dress for the MOB, party frocks in an array of jewel tones for guests and some true unicorn pieces for brides who shirk the norm and want to create a statement on their big day. 1 4 DW H A | | J A N U A R Y / F E B R U A R Y

or a quintessentially English countryside wedding, Meols Hall in Churchtown, Southport offers intimate venue spaces, an expert planning team and a stately and historic backdrop. Built in the 12th century during the early reign of King John, Meols is the oldest manor house in Southport. It has stayed in the same family since its beginning with 27 generations lovingly caring for the house and building it into what we see today. Nestled in the tranquil setting of 100 acres of wooded parkland, yet very close to the charming village of Churchtown, Meols offers multiple unique spaces in which to celebrate your fairytale wedding.

Step out of the cold and into a beautifully renovated 400-year-old Tithe Barn, softly lit by candlelight and echoing with the sounds of clinking champagne glasses and piano sonatas. The tranquil, rustic space with original brick walls and an open beamed ceiling is filled to your liking with lush blooms, intricately laid tables and personalised touches to transform even the harshest winter into a dreamy escape. Restored by local craftsmen using traditional methods, the Tithe Barn can be used as a ceremony location or reception space, completely sheltered from the noise of the outside world to ensure that you and your guests have a private and peaceful event. S

imon and I both knew we would have a destination wedding. We have family scattered across Europe and Africa, so we had to find a common ground. We ended up shortlisting two countries: Portugal at the Douro Valley and South Africa, near the Western Cape. Eventually, we both decided on Cape Town due to family ties. Before we chose our venue, we first chose our wedding planner. Jadee from Watermelon Collection was the only one to survive my four hour Skype inquisition, so we knew she was the perfect planner for us. Then we moved onto selecting our venue. After arduous Instagram stalking and plenty of video conference calls with Jadee onsite we decided to go with Molen Vliet in Cape Town. We finally saw the venue for the first time two weeks before the wedding and it was everything we had hoped and dreamed. Having the grandiose Simondium as our backdrop, coupled by the beautiful sunset of the vineyard was perfect. It was great for our guests as well. Molen Vliet had accommodation on site, so we got a travel concierge to help us with guest reservations, and we had some staying opposite the road at Zorg Vliet. That meant that we were all together. We made an effort to keep to the budget. Having flight alerts, booking tickets in advance and getting my cathedral veil made by a local seamstress helped me save a lot. I also found the illustrator for our save the dates and stationery on Instagram and she was a bargain. Finally, we managed to cut down on the flower costs by having fewer tree arrangements and smaller vase arrangements. My wedding dress was from a Caroline Castigliano flagship store in London. It was my last appointment after a full day shopping for a wedding dress. I wanted it to be timeless, but I also wanted to be able to run, jump and twirl around in it. I instantly fell in love with the “Tertia” gown. It was love at first sight! I wanted my hair and makeup to keep within the soft, romantic timeless theme. I didn’t have a definitive look in mind, I just knew I needed to have my hair secure and makeup that looked polished, clean and natural. For our colour palette, I went for white, nude and hints of blush because I liked the softness and romanticism of the colours. Having my wedding party in a champagne colour kept it timeless and complimented my ivory dress.

en and I had never been to Bali, but wanted to wed on a tropical island and heard it was amazing. When we came across Ayana Resort & Spa, we immediately fell in love with the beautiful backdrop of azure waves and the altar overlooking a cliff. Since Ken and I love being by the water, we thought it was ideal for our ceremony.

REAL LIFE WEDDINGS

As our guests stayed at the resort, we were able to hang out with our friends and family before and after the wedding. It was really special for us to have them close by to enjoy the festivities. Having a wedding at a resort like Ayana makes it easy to organise as they assign a wedding planner to make sure your guests are accommodated. For our colour palette we wanted to go for something classy, timeless and unforgettable, so we chose the colours ivory, gold and silver. My wedding dress was from Berta Bridal. I had been stalking the Berta Instagram page for awhile and fell in love with her style. I loved so many of the dresses and it was really hard to pick one! My hair and makeup artist were also found through Instagram research. I eventually came across Lijing Makeup and Hair. For makeup, I chose an understated, natural look and for my hair, I went for Old Hollywood waves. The biggest challenge was making sure that the vendors understood our vision as this was a destination wedding; all communication was made via email or Whatsapp. Staying on budget was super important...we made sure that we had a set budget and stuck to it!

anny proposed on our 10 year anniversary while we were in Mexico. As obvious as it seemed to be to everyone else it really was a huge surprise. He had planned a table for two at the end of a jetty and it was perfect! The first thing we did to plan the wedding was book the venue. Meols Hall had always been our favourite choice and the Tithe Barn was exactly what we had pictured. The fact that it was so local made it even more special. They were absolutely brilliant with us from day one and we couldn’t have asked for more. When it was time to look for the dress, Mum and I set out to look for what I had in mind and we quickly came to realise it didn’t seem to exist! Mum has always been amazing at sewing, so she decided to make the dress. She also lovingly made me a handbag to match with our names and wedding date stitched inside. We didn’t have a wedding planner but I can honestly say it was a huge team effort; our family and friends helped massively and I couldn’t have done it without my Mum, Danny’s Mum, Vikki, Abbie, Lewis, Becci and Phil. We handmade a lot of the décor and my Mum also made our gorgeous four tiered fruit cake with fresh flowers. To compliment the airy, natural feel of our décor, my Mum’s best friend Helen made beautiful bouquets with white and green blooms. Along with eucalyptus, roses and freesias I had Veronicas in my bouquet. That’s the name of my late Nan so it had extra special meaning. One of the best moments was when we pulled up to the reception in our wedding car with everyone clapping and cheering. I will never forget walking into the Tithe Barn as it was decorated to perfection. The food was amazing and we had a fantastic band from Manchester called The Essentials. Our honeymoon was two weeks of paradise in Mauritius and we couldn’t have asked for anything better to continue our celebration!

artagena has always been an important place for us and its location was ideal for guests coming from different countries. It is one of the most romantic places on earth! When we were looking for a venue, we visited different places in the historic part of town and fell in love with an old house built in 1537. It was big enough to host a large number of guests and we actually had both the ceremony and reception there. I wanted my hair and makeup to look natural but also to have a vibrant finesse and the artists executed that perfectly. My wedding dress was designed by Rosa Clara and it was beautiful. Keeping to our budget was not that difficult because we already knew exactly what we wanted. What was challenging was having so many guests come from around the world as it was difficult getting them to confirm on time. Our colour palette was inspired by our dear country, Colombia. The dĂŠcor and floral genius, Andres Cortes designed a very colorful installation with fresh flowers and fruit as a backdrop to our ceremony. We kept the theme throughout the house. Every detail from the silverware to the china and hand embroidered napkins were all strategically selected. Big steel chandeliers were placed around the house and our tables, chairs and place settings also had a tropical Colombian flair.

Beauty Reviews Find out what we really think about these top beauty products

Tri Balm FRANCES PRESCOTT

Keeping up with my skin-care routine can be daunting, and sometimes I just don’t have time. The Tri-Balm was the perfect product to help simplify my routine, without compromising the quality. Made with a selection of essential oils, Hyaluronic acid and vitamin E, it ensures that your skin is both moisturised and exfoliated in a one step process. The travel-friendly packaging is great for those who are on-the-go and fits perfectly in your handbag or suitcase. It’s also cruelty-free!

VANESSA

Peel + Reveal TIME BOMB

I have been using this product once a week for a couple of months now. I have seen a dramatic improvement in my skin, especially in the troubled T-Zone area. The AHA Serum works by lifting off the layers of dead skin and the dermabrasion cream helps to exfoliate. After just a few weeks of use I noticed an improvement in skin texture and tone. Overall, Peel + Reveal is a great skin-perfecting ritual to enhance your glow in just two easy steps.

JACK

Powerball Moisturiser TIME BOMB

As my skin is naturally dry, I am constantly looking for a good moisturiser! This one by Time Bomb is really fantastic and I love the easy to carry container which I can pop in my wash bag for travel. The cream absorbs very quickly and is packed with naturally hydrating and plumping agents like Hyaluronic Acid, which I swear by. After application, my skin always feels smooth and nourished and there’s no greasy residue. I dislike heavy scents and this one is light and nice.

in control of your finances as you can decide upfront what the majority of your purchases will be. When you arrive at your destination you will likely find central eateries and excursions that have a higher price point, but if you venture off the beaten track you will be sure to find some authentic local gems that have greater value for your money. IN THE WINTER, THE MOST POPULAR DESTINATION is always the Canary Islands. However, if you are able to fly a bit further it is the best time to visit the Middle East. Dubai and Abu Dhabi have perfect warm weather to sunbathe and visit the sights! MY MUST-HAVE HOLIDAY/TRAVEL ITEMS are earphones, a camera and a bottle of sun protection. I also always carry a portable charger as I often rely on Google Maps when travelling! WWW.DWHA.CO.UK

OUR PICKS Stay HOTEL JEROME

Alpine Adventure Why Aspen is still a go-to winter playground.. words by Kristie Landing

N

estled in the heart of the Rockies, a charming ski village equipped with timber lodge hotels, cosy knitwear boutiques and contemporary art galleries emerges from the snow. Aspen is a longtime favourite of many as a honeymoon ski resort, yet despite having constant attention it has not lost its appeal by becoming overly touristy. In fact, it remains a stunning escape for those who love vigorous outdoor activity, fresh air and a richness of culture and authenticity. As far as the terrain goes, the slopes range from beginner to expert double blacks, so no matter what level you are, there is a mountain for you to conquer. For non-skiers, the spa and food scene are worldclass, so rest assured, you won’t feel left out of the fun! That’s really what makes Aspen stand out as the skiing capital of the United States: it’s a perfect cocktail of stimulating conditions, a flair for artistry and delectable cuisine. Plus, it is undeniably beautiful and romantic!

Step inside the Western chic Hotel Jerome, a landmark in Aspen built in 1889 that has just gone through an enticing revamp. Its history is as fascinating as its clientele, who over the years have included legends like John Wayne, Gary Cooper and Hunter S. Johnson. The J-Bar is an excellent stop for an upscale burger and Prohibition-era spiked shake known as the ‘Aspen Crud.’

Eat MATSUHISA

From world renowned Chef Nobu comes newstyle Japanese restaurant Matsuhisa Aspen, housed in an 120-year-old Main Street blue Victorian house. There are two sushi bars as well as table seating in the main dining room replete with luxurious finishings like bamboo covered ceilings and a natural walnut cocktail bar. Chef Nobu expertly fuses his traditional training in Tokyo with South American influences, so be sure to try specials like the Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeño, Black Cod Miso and White fish Tiradito.

See WINTERSKÖL

For the past 68 years, Aspen has played host to a fantastic four-day cultural festival called Wintersköl. Always held in January, the celebration of winter originally began to highlight Aspen’s unique Nordic lifestyle. Today, it includes ice-sculpture carving, a dog costume competition, concerts, fireworks and more!

Ski BUTTERMILK

126

DWHA || JANUARY / FEBRUARY

With four separate mountains linked by one free shuttle bus service, you have plenty of slope to choose from in Aspen. Having been to all of them, we have a special place in our heart for Buttermilk, particularly if you are at a more novice level or want to warm up before you hit the other slopes. There are plenty of green and blue runs plus some more hidden gem slopes that are usually nice and powdery because not as many people know about them. In fact, the ‘Tiehack’ side of Buttermilk offers long gorgeous black runs that often haven’t been groomed!

Diana Sciarrillo A chat with Guatemala’s top wedding planner and founder of I Do, Guatemala

W

ith over 10 years in the wedding planning industry, the founder of I Do, Guatemala Diana Sciarrillo brings stylish and bespoke bridal services to Guatemalan couples and travelers from afar. Her international background and sensitivity towards her clients’ needs, have time and again set her apart in the industry and truly, her testimonials and photos say it all. We spoke with Diana about her passion for planning, love of scenic Guatemala and the lessons learned throughout her career.

HOW LONG BEFORE THEIR WEDDING DATE SHOULD A COUPLE CONTACT YOU?

A minimum of 6 months for a wedding is ideal. We have, however, organized elopements in a matter of days!

WHY SHOULD A COUPLE CHOOSE TO HAVE THEIR WEDDING IN GUATEMALA?

Guatemala has many different backdrops and caters to different needs from a cultural perspective. For example, Antigua Guatemala offers colonial monuments, the Pacific Coast has an exotic beach with black sand and rolling waves, Lake Atitlan is incredibly serene with splendid colors and floral backdrops and the majestic Mayan temples provide history and a journey to the past.

WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT A BEAUTIFUL WEDDING YOU HAVE PLANNED RECENTLY.

It is hard to pick one wedding out of all the ones we have organized. Each wedding is so different and showcases the individuality of the couple in such an intimate way. However, we just recently planned a wedding where the emphasis was placed on enjoying the company of the guests, rather than being extravagant. It was very unpretentious, yet luxurious and made all guests feel at ease. Of course, there were still cocktail tables, lounges, food stations open all night, great music and lots and lots of dancing! It was a fun process to plan and very full of bespoke elements that reflected the style of the bride and groom.

HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT THE PROCESS IS SMOOTH AND ENJOYABLE?

Unlike many planning companies, we do not limit the number of calls and emails received by our clients. As many arrangements are planned from afar, we understand that communication is a must. My team and I are available and very responsive to communication.

HOW DO YOU TAILOR YOUR SERVICES TO BE BESPOKE TO EVERY COUPLE?

I Do, Guatemala is a company that tailors to every client’s need...We do not have pre-established

134

DWHA || JANUARY / FEBRUARY

packages or what I tend to call ‘cookie cutter weddings.’ With us, no two weddings have ever been the same! Customizable options are only limited by imagination and budget. After being contacted by a possible client, we ask for a phone conversation where we talk to the couple asking what their ideal wedding would be. We then send them an idea board spreadsheet which they fill out with as much detail as possible. With this, my team and I come up with a unique vision which we then present to the client. Once it has been approved, the magic begins!

WHAT CREATIVE TRENDS AT WEDDINGS HAVE YOU SEEN?

Things are less formal nowadays. Tradition has really disappeared and most couples do things that best describe their personality/relationship. Food has become a very important aspect but more in the form of fun fusion meals rather than the typical wedding banquet.

WHERE SHOULD INSPIRATION?

BRIDES

LOOK

FOR

Bridal magazines, Instagram, Pinterest, other weddings, movies, daily life...truly anything could be used as inspiration. If the budget is available, then the sky’s the limit!

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNED AND WOULD PASS ALONG TO OTHER PLANNERS GETTING STARTED?

It is important to know that you cannot push your views or opinions. As a planner, we need to have an open mind and be ready to adapt to each client’s vision of their perfect day. Additionally, it’s good to establish a relationship that goes beyond service and offers personal assistance during a stressful time.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING A WEDDING PLANNER?

The final outcome...seeing the look of joy and astonishment in the bride and groom’s eyes when they walk into the room and see that their dream has actually come true. Priceless!!!

DUNDU: Ritual of Unity Interconnectivity, light and love as shared by a family of unique illuminated puppets

A

metaphor for humanity, DUNDU are magnificent larger-than-life puppets that come to life through human connection and share joy with you and your loved ones at your wedding. DUNDU comes from ‘DU UND DU,’ which translates to ‘You and You,’ signifying their universality and relationship to all people. DUNDU showcases the beauty of collaboration in a highly visual and artistic way that moves the audience in ways they never thought possible...

Giants of Lights

Also called gentle ‘Giants of Lights,’ DUNDU are smart and stunning constructions with integrated stateof-the-art technology based on years of stellar craftsmanship and continuous development. They include a whole family of puppets and their creative inventor Tobias Husemann is currently constructing the next additions to the group. In total, there are almost 20 puppets with different shapes and personalities including eight giant DUNDU, one Amazing Grace BIMBI, one middlesized DUNDU, one Spiegly and eight baby DUNDU. While different, they all embrace a global ethos of connecting people. Each puppet is made of flexible individual fibre strands that are woven together and light up the night with their glowing presence. They are controlled by five trained puppeteers each, who bring to life their character and dance to the beat of the West African Harp Kora, specially composed for DUNDU by in-house Musical Director, Stefan Charisius.

Worldwide Joy

DUNDU’s home base is in Stuttgart, Germany, where all of the training, research, global bookings and logistics take place. From Stuttgart, they travel all over the world and are always excited to see what is waiting down the road. In the past, DUNDU has graced luxury Indian weddings with Bollywood VIPs, posh Tuscany weddings, traditional weddings in German castles, hipster weddings and even stag-dos and hen parties. In the

According to DUNDU’s founder, Fabian Seewald, “During our trip in Cairo, we performed with DUNDU in a walking performance towards Tahrir Square and showcased a beautiful, artistic moment that connected people. Doris Wallner With the motto of “What touches the heart should come from the heart” (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe), Doris Wallner has proven time and again that a little extra love goes a long way in wedding planning...

A

fter more than 20 years of experience working for banking, insurance and marketing companies, luxury wedding planner Doris Wallner turned over a new leaf and began to follow her true passion. Nine years ago, she began a bespoke wedding service offering “weddings with a twist,” for which she has become famous in the Salzburg-Pinzgau region of Austria. Her attention to detail, ability to relate to each and every one of her clients and stunning results have set her apart in the industry as a wedding planner to trust. Imagine idyllic moments in a harmoniously balanced atmosphere, always with an 100% Austrian feel; that is what Doris strives for with every event. With years of experience and highly qualified network partners, Doris will realize your dream day, one that is tailormade, unique and as individual as you are.

A Bespoke Service

While it wasn’t always her full-time career, Doris has actually been planning events for decades. The first wedding she organised was 27 years ago, at a time when ‘wedding planner’ wasn’t even a known occupation. “As I always liked to plan and organize, it was natural for my best friend to ask me to oversee her wedding,” Doris said. The wedding had 300 guests, which really meant that Doris had to dive into the deep end straight away… Today, her agency offers multiple means of creating your fairytale while staying within your budget. She recommends reaching out at least 1.5 years before the wedding to secure your location if you have a specific date in mind, but otherwise she is well connected and

PLANNING able to find venues that will match your specifications. In addition to weddings, Doris is also able to plan renewals of vows, wedding anniversaries, proposals, and events like get togethers, brunches and more.

Scenic Austria

Could there be anything more romantic than getting married when you’re on holiday – far away from the daily hustle and bustle? A wedding in the province of Salzburg means natural beauty and a down-to-earth approach. Revive old customs and look forward to a traditional wedding in the mountains of Salzburg as well as other breathtaking locations. Austria is truly divine in both summer and winter, making it an ideal location for a wedding. Experience the most beautiful day of your life surrounded by lush, green meadows in spring and summer or witness the breathtakingly clear view of the surrounding mountain ranges in autumn. In the winter, drift around the snowy landscape in a romantic carriage ride for two with a panoramic view of the mountains. To highlight the beauty of the location, Doris Wallner’s agency offer plenty of unique, individual venue options for your wedding, reception and honeymoon. Whether you are longing for a listed building or modern architecture, an urban or countryside aesthetic, Doris finds the perfect spot for your big day!

“I will create a soulful, individual, tailor-made and fitting programme for your celebration that you and your guests will fondly remember and which will make it unique.” A Flair for the Extraordinary

Above all, Doris encourages couples to express their true selves on their big day, whether that means wearing silver Moonboots for a snowy mountain wedding or riding away in a station wagon covered in flowers. She even once planned a football themed wedding for fans of the Salzburg football team, which included a helicopter flight to the Salzburg football stadium, VIP tour and photo shoot. According to Doris, “The couple entered the stadium with music like real football stars and were even allowed to shoot on the pitch and score goals.” It doesn’t matter if you want to get married like a noblewoman, Mozart, underwater, in a hot-airballoon or in a haunted Scottish castle – Doris’ team will make sure your wedding is something very special! Extras such as ‘trash the dress,’ fireworks, laser shows, dance acts, helicopter flights with photo shoots, picnics, archery, a magician and cartoonist can be organised for you as well. “I will create a very soulful, individual, tailor-made and fitting programme for your celebration that you and your guests will fondly remember and which will make it unique. We always take to heart your wishes and ideas,” says Doris. WWW.DWHA.CO.UK
