PT Robotics Team Impacted by Government Shutdown Reporting by DAVID WOLFE BENDER, Editor-In-Chief The United States federal government shutdown–which started on December 22, 2018 at midnight–does not typically have a huge effect on everybody in the country. But one of PT’s competitive robotics teams has been impacted by what is now the longest government shutdown in the history of the United States. Team 6842Z was planning on attending a competition at the Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia. It is an air and space museum owned and operated by the Smithsonian Institution. Considering that the Smithsonian museums are funded by the government, the competition can’t be held at the prestigious museum.

“We have officially changed the location of our...event to the Dulles Expo Center,” an email to the 44 teams planning to attend read. “We waited out the shutdown as long as we could.” The competition fields at the event were going to be backdropped by a Cold War fighter jet. Due to the shutdown, they moved three miles south to a convention center. They still opted to attend the event, which will provide the team a second opportunity to qualify for the World Championships, an event held in Louisville, Kentucky every April. THE RUNDOWN February is the month of Model United Nations. On January 25, 2019, PT seniors (and one distinguished junior) left for their annual conference in the Netherlands. They will return on February 2. Sophomore delegates leave for Chicago on February 7. Juniors attend a conference in Washington, DC. They will depart February 14. Freshman and first-year delegates competed the first semester. On January 30, 2019, members of the sophomore class take the Practice ACT. Advisory starts at 1:30 PM to allow for the testing. The Upper School musical is now rehearsing for the annual Spring performance. It runs March 8-10. Read the story on page 6. Mid-quarter III, which marks the midpoint of each quarter, will end on February 1st. In most circumstances, comments are not required for teachers. The annal PT student vs. faculty basketball game is scheduled for February 20. Most people are so accustomed to their free speech rights that they don’t think about where they stop.
