A WORD FROM THE PUBLISHER
Never forget Brandon Dreyer (1991-2016)
Spring is here, and with it comes new life. Flowers go into full bloom, trees become fully leaved, and animals of all types are out and about nesting and filling their bellies with nature’s wonderful bounty. The air and ocean temperatures begin to warm up and our wonderful beaches start to fill in with tourists and locals, alike. Every beach in Oceanside has its own cast of characters, and if you have spent any time at the Oceanside Pier—you probably ran into Brandon Dreyer. He was impossible to miss; he was the kid out in the line-up having the most

fun. Just saying “hello” to him would get you the biggest smile you’ve ever seen in return. Brandon was the epitome of what a true Oceanside “native” is all about—full of energy, respectful of his peers, and always willing to give you the shirt off his back. Spring is all about new life, and in this case, it’s all about remembering someone whose life affected so many people in such a positive manner. I’m sure that I can speak for the entire surfing community and everyone else who loves Brandon when I say that we will always remember that smile when we paddle
out at the pier, and will feel you in our hearts with every wave we catch—because Brandon would feel the same way about you. Like I said before, spring is about life and Brandon’s will live on here in Oceanside forever.

Exercise is important to your general health and also reduces stress. Take a pregnancy class and walk at least fifteento-twenty minutes daily at a moderate pace. Don’t over do it, and seek shade for rest when needed. 7. Wear nonrestricting comfortable clothing and shoes. 8. Elevate your feet several times per day to prevent swelling and fatigue to your legs and feet. 9. Wear your seatbelt properly while driving. The shoulder strap should be positioned over your collarbone, and the waist strap should rest below your abdomen as low as possible on the hips and across your upper thighs. Turn off the airbag, as well, or sit where one is not active. 10. Do not take any over-the-counter medications or herbal remedies without consulting your doctor.

Immediately after graduating, she wanted to return to Oceanside. Said Megan, “I missed our vibe, community, and weather. Where else can I run the Strand in the middle of December?” Returning with an M.A. in Physical Education and Health, she then received her California Teaching Credential and coached in local middle and high schools. While working out at a local gym, a manager recruited her into Personal Training. Two weeks later, she aced the test and never looked back. That was eight years ago, and she has since obtained certifications from NASM, NESTA and AFAA, as well as becoming certified to teach Yoga, Cycle, and Zumba. During that Yoga training, she was inspired to open her own business. “While getting my mind and body in tune, I decided I wanted to change lives by sharing my own style, passion, and experience. I shared this with my husband, discussed all it would entail, we came up with the name, and began looking at spaces the very next day.” Megan continued, “My husband has been my number one supporter and I couldn’t have done any of it without him!”

For Megan Johnson McCullough, coaching runs in her family, so it was only natural that she’d devote her career to helping our community members realize their health and fitness goals. Born and raised in North County, Megan attended El Camino High School where her dad, Ray Johnson happens to be the “most winning” basketball coach in California high school history. Inheriting that love of sports and coaching from her father and a childhood filled with physical fitness and basketball is what inspired her to open her current space. Her studio is filled with all things needed to get in shape—machines, weights, TRX straps, and large tires, as well as all the equipment for group classes. HIDDEN GEMS
BANANA DANG COFFEE WORDS: AARON SCHMIDT PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER Truly a “hidden gem,” Banana Dang is Oceanside’s first craft coffee bar that serves some of the best banana smoothies on the planet. Owners Mario Jimenez and Thanh-Thanh (a.k.a. T2) Dang met while both were working in the music industry—Mario played in a band called the Stanford Prison Experiment and T2 was a publicist for Ultimatum in Los Angeles. Ultimately, they would leave LA and follow their passions for coffee (and bananas). Mario and T2 moved to Rincon, Puerto Rico and opened their first coffee bar in 2007. After relocating to Oceanside, they opened Banana Dang Coffee on Coast Highway last year in 2015.
Owners Mario Jimenez and Thanh-Thanh Dang
When did you guys move to Oceanside? Mario: We arrived in late 2014, and opened this place up in January 2015. We just had our oneyear anniversary. Why did you pick Oceanside? Mario: We were looking for the same diversity and vibes as Puerto Rico, and after looking around North County—we found out that Oceanside had the most diversity with a little bit of urban culture going on, so that was a real “turn on” for us. So you guys chose Oceanside because it was similar to what you were used to in Puerto Rico? T2: We like the demographic. I also have a personal history of Oceanside. When we got out of the Vietnam War, my family and I were in Oceanside as refugees. Later on, I joined the US Army and was training at Camp Pendleton when I was eighteen. So now I’m back in Oceanside again [laughs]. Where did you get the name “Banana Dang?” T2: Well, in military speaking—you get called by your last name. Mine is “Dang.”
20 THEOSIDER.COM
Would you say that bananas are one of the main ingredients in the smoothies here? T2: It’s the main ingredient. All of our smoothies are banana smoothies. What’s the most popular smoothie? T2: Nutty Dang and Purple Dang. Mango Dango is a new one and is actually catching up. What’s your favorite thing about Oceanside? T2: I’d have to say the people—people in Oceanside are so interesting. It’s so much more real here. I like the diversity, and I like the young vibe—not in “age,” but the surfing and skateboarding all day. Mario: There are definitely creative people here, and that’s nice to be around.

ARTS
OCEANSIDE MUSEUM OF ART CONNECTING CULTURE WITH COMMUNITY WORDS: PROMISE YEE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
Oceanside Museum of Art sets itself apart from other museums in several ways, including its deep roots in the community and focus on exhibits. Museum executive director James Peck said unlike most major museums, OMA did not get its start through a donation of a wealthy family. Instead, OMA opened in 1997 as a grassroots effort of local artists who wanted a venue to showcase Southern California art. “The founding was organic, a group of citizens believed they deserved an art museum,” Peck said. The museum launched twenty years ago in the single story city-owned building on Pier View Way designed by architect Irving Gill. The Gill building remains part of OMA, and now houses its gift shop and one of its two main galleries. Efforts began in 2007 to raise $7 million to build the three level glass and metal addition designed by architect Frederick Fisher. The Fisher building opened in 2008 and began a new era for the museum. It added 15,000 square feet and quadrupled the museum’s original size. The addition provides another first floor main gallery, three upstairs gallery spaces—including a lecture auditorium, office spaces, and “below ground” education rooms where ArtQuest classes and camps meet. Its glass walls open to the front patio and allow indoor/outdoor events to be held. “It helped us become who we have become, and added a lot more exhibit possibilities,” explained Peck.

Art After Dark experience.
Annual museum events include the Art After Dark interactive art experience, and an elegant Museum Ball fundraiser. The museum also offers trips and lectures. It’s main draw remains its top quality art exhibits, which are chiefly contemporary, but do include traditional art. To date OMA has shown over 650 exhibits. “The community has a hunger for top quality exhibits and good art,” Peck said. Peck, who became the museum’s fourth executive director two months ago, said he’d have a strong hand in planning upcoming exhibits. Peck said because OMA is not a collection museum, it’s extremely responsive to the community in selecting its exhibits and guest
curators. This allows the museum to offer a rich variety of exhibits. “Good art and good artisans is the only real criteria,” Peck explained. This year, museum visitors can look forward to surfboard and skateboard art, and another Art After Dark experience curated by artistic ringmaster, Bob Self. The vision of the museum will continue to be led by its board of directors. Peck said the young museum, which operates on about a $1.2 million annual budget, is working to beef up its reserve funds. Fundraisers and museum memberships fund the nonprofit. A significant number of the museum’s 1,700 household memberships are part of the Artists Alliance, which requires museum membership
and gives artists opportunities to showcase their work at partner exhibit sites. The mutually beneficial alliance between artists and the museum harkens back to the museum’s start up by a group of local artists. Peck said the museum would always work to keep that relationship strong. Make sure to visit OMA; it’ll be an experience that’ll last a lifetime.

HOMEGROWN
Home grown SAM BRENNER WORDS AND PHOTOS: JT RHOADES
Growing up in Oceanside, we’re blessed with some of the best opportunities the world has to offer. Sam Brenner (6’4” 305lbs, a.k.a. “Shrimp” to his friends) is an Oceanside native who’s a prime example of how sheer determination and perseverance can turn into a world of opportunity. Sam was born April 27, 1990, and like most kids growing up in South Oceanside, he got involved in surfing and skateboarding. Attending Las Palmas elementary, he became fluent in Spanish, and at Lincoln Middle School started enjoying team sports in PE. He then moved on to Oceanside High, where he decided to try out for football in his freshman year for the first time. He never played Pop Warner—Sam was a natural on the line. Boasting high school career stats like “Most Valuable Offensive Lineman” playing in the California All-Star Game, and being named a scholar leader athlete by the Walter J. Zable/San Diego chapter of the National Football and College Hall of Fame—Sam was also a finalist in the countywide Silver Pigskin. He was the first offensive lineman ever honored by voting coaches and sports reporters. As a college prospect, Brenner was ranked by Rivals.com as the Number 50 offensive guard in the country, and the 88th overall prospect in California. After such great playing in high school, Sam
26 THEOSIDER.COM
was scouted by multiple teams. He chose the University of Utah for the calm school atmosphere and good football program. Sam played an array of positions while at Utah—playing thirteen games on special teams, and had 53 “snaps” as Center in his freshman year. At Utah’s 2013 NFL Draft Day, Brenner ran a shocking 4.99-second 40-yard dash and completed 29 bench reps of 225 lbs. He was undrafted, but was picked up by the Miami Dolphins as a free agent shortly after. After a year on the practice squad, Sam started in four games and played a total of seven games his first season on the roster. During the next two seasons, Sam was moved back and forth from “active roster” to “practice squad.” That, in turn, ended getting him picked up (on waiver) by the Denver Broncos on November 10, 2015. The Broncos were having a 7-1 season when he joined. They ended up in the Playoffs, succeeded all the way, and then went on to win Super Bowl 50. Sam Brenner became the first person in Oceanside’s history to be graced with a coveted Super Bowl ring. With this great success, Sam hasn’t forgot about his roots and is planning on purchasing a house in Oceanside and raising his daughter in the best place on earth.

OCEANSIDE YOUTH SUCCESS WEEK IT TAKES A COMMUNITY TO RAISE STRONG LEADERS WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

In 2016, students, parents, teachers, and administrators in Oceanside Unified School District have a lot to be excited about when it comes to the future of their education. On January 10th, the Youth Success Week Kick-Off had an attendance of 200 people and started a weeklong campaign led by a group of powerful community leaders and motivational speakers, including Stedman Graham. Youth Success Week unfolded for Oceanside Unified School District’s 20,000 students during 87 assemblies in 23 schools from January 10-17, 2016. Youth Success Week aims to create leaders by educating and empowering youth using a 21st century model that incorporates the entire community. Co-founded by Stedman Graham and Bobbi DePorter, the Community Alliance for Youth Success (CAYS) created the educational model that provides a platform to create leaders, beginning with Youth Success Week. “CAYS is a volunteer group of business owners, experts in the field of human development, and community agencies that have joined together to create a national model giving youth a voice for change,” said Bobbi DePorter. Oceanside’s Youth Success Week is a pilot program intended to roll out nationally. A collaborative effort between CAYS, Oceanside’s Promise, and Oceanside Unified School District produced the educational model over three years based on the “8 Keys To Success” to empower students and create strong leaders. By teaching the “8 Keys to Success” in the classroom and getting the entire community involved in the process, kids are empowered to become leaders. The model is integrated into everyday student life and reinforced on a consistent basis. By fostering strong leaders in a community, the community will, in turn, reap the rewards of their leadership. According to Stedman Graham, “Strong communities are made up of businesses, strong schools, strong institutions, strong families, strong teachers, and strong leadership.”
“Every teacher and staff member at OUSD is committed to providing each and every child we serve the best educational experience possible, and so is the community of Oceanside. The more hands and hearts involved—the greater the impact. Together, we will make sure the next generation is the best generation.” —Dr. Duane Coleman, Oceanside Unified School District Superintendent
Superintendent Dr. Duane Coleman with Oceanside students.
Bobbi DePorter
Around 750 students participated in Youth Success Week, completing blue-ribbon ambassador training; leadership success day; parent palooza; a variety show on Saturday night; Youth Success Week finale; and 100-plus assemblies in schools delivered by more than twenty presenters, authors, and keynote speakers. Since Youth Success Week’s culmination, CAYS and other organizers are meeting to continue the momentum, discuss next steps, and build a blueprint for other communities. Oceanside Unified School District’s mission is to make sure that every student graduates and
has the ability to succeed. According to Superintendent Dr. Coleman: “Youth Success Week was proof that here in Oceanside, we have not only a commitment, but a promise to every one of our kids—the promise that every child who graduates from one of our schools will be college, career, and life ready. This is the Oceanside Promise.”

10 THINGS
YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE
VALLEY DRIVE-IN
Once an “All-American” icon, drive-in theaters are now nearly non-existent. Oceanside’s last drive-in is rotting; its screens are tattered and blowing in the wind. It was once the center of entertainment and the place to be. Families loaded up the car with children in their pajamas and teenagers on date night were ducking in the backseat for make-out sessions. The Valley Drive-In showed countless movies, some of the best and probably some of the worst. Its screens no longer reflect Hollywood blockbusters—now they cast long shadows over the valley.

1.
The Valley Drive-In was Oceanside’s third drive-in theater. The Midway Drive-in was located at 1823 Mission Avenue (near Barnes Street), and another drive-in was located near Tri City Medical Center.
2.
The original name was the Mission San Luis Rey Drive-In. Construction began in the spring of 1966.
3.
Owners of the property were the Siegel Brothers, whose father operated theaters in Oceanside since 1934. They also built the Star Theater in 1956 in downtown Oceanside.
4.
The theater originally opened in August of 1966 with an aluminum screen that would “reflect three times the brightness of an ordinary drive-in screen.”
5.
An additional screen was added in 1969 and two in the 1970s, bringing the total to four.

When opened, the drive-in provided spaces for 1,300 cars and was built at a cost of over a half-million dollars.
7.
The surrounding property was often patrolled to keep cars from parking a sneaking a “free view.”
8.
In the 1970s, a swap meet began using the drive-in grounds during the weekends. The swap meet sold anything from mixed tapes, live plants, tires, and furniture. A swap meet is still held at the drive-in today.
9.
In 1996, the Valley Drive-In cut its hours to weekends due to the drop in drive-in popularity. At one time, San Diego County had seventeen drive-in theaters in operation. But 30 years after it opened, the Valley Drive-In was just one of four remaining operational drive-in theaters.

10.
Soon after, the drive-In was closed during the fall and winter, opening again in May through September. The Valley Drive-In’s last season was in 1999, marking the end of an era.

Buena Vista Audubon Society
Preserving Rare California Habitat WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
Oceanside is home to one of the earth’s most fragile and diverse ecosystems: coastal wetlands. The Buena Vista Lagoon Ecological Reserve is 220-acres of preserved coastal wetlands and open space, and was declared California’s first ecological reserve in 1968. Once thought to have been undesirable land, many coastal wetlands were paved over for development. Supporters and conservationists have rallied around protecting the open space from development for the benefit of future generations. In 1951, The Buena Vista Audubon Society was founded as a chapter of the National Audubon Society. The Buena Vista Audubon Society (BVAS) (in conjunction with City of Oceanside) built the Nature Center in 1987; which is an educational and scenic Oceanside attraction for both residents and tourists to enjoy.

The Nature Center is a 3,500 square foot landmark located at the southernmost end of Oceanside on South Coast Highway 101. Renovated in 2014, the addition of a second story viewing deck provides sweeping views of the ecological reserve. Inside visitors will find informative interpretive displays pertaining to local wildlife. The Nature Center also houses a natural history library, small gift shop, and meeting rooms. Directly outside the Nature Center, the grounds include a native plant demonstration garden, and short interpretive trail. One of the popular monthly programs offered by BVAS is bird watching or “birding.” Every month, a group led by Tom Troy, a professional ornithologist, loops around the Buena Vista Lagoon and records the different species of birds observed. The tallies provide a long-term snapshot of bird species at the lagoon. Even though bird watchers participating are volunteers, the “citizen science” behind the observations conveyed invaluable information about bird behaviors for scientists. Open to the public and free of charge, “birders” at all levels are invited to join. The annual Christmas Bird Count each December is organized by the National Audubon Society and sponsored by BVAS. In December 2015’s Christmas Bird Count, 140 observers tallied 196 species of birds at various locations.
The Buena Vista Lagoon Nature Center.
BVAS prides itself on its educational programs, especially the programs geared towards children. BVAS provides approximately 3,000 local students free visits to the Nature Center with developmentally appropriate presentations, and nature discovery hikes along the trail. Several local elementary schools benefit from a bus grant providing free transportation to the Nature Center. Other educational programs offered to the community include birding trips, preschool story time, and special nature programs. As of January 2016, BVAS became landowners with the land acquisition of the 3.5acre parcel across the highway from the Nature Center. The land is an irreplaceable piece of rare coastal wetland, and home to the endangered Light-footed Ridgway’s Rail. Conserving this property has created a buffer between urban development and the ecological reserve, allowing for the restoration of salt marsh wetlands and THEOSIDER.COM 39

BVAS and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife will work together to restore and manage this important ecological reserve. BVAS is also currently in the process of purchasing 31 acres between the San Luis Rey River and Camp Pendleton. Community members and interested parties are invited to donate to this tax-deductible endeavor that will protect endangered species and prime open space. For the immediate future of the lagoon, the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) recently conducted an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) to find the best alternative to restore and improve the open space. The final results of the EIR have not yet been released. Out of four proposed alternatives, BVAS advocated for the Saltwater Alternative that will remove the weir (man-made barrier) and maximize the restoration of critically endangered coastal salt marsh. Other benefits of the proposed Saltwater Alternative include an increase in water circulation, water quality improvement, mosquito population reduction, habitat for endangered species, and a source of sand for local beaches. The Saltwater Alternative would remove the existing weir that has closed the lagoon from the Pacific Ocean prior to 1940. Buena Vista Audubon Society and the Nature Center provide numerous opportunities
for visitors and residents to enjoy nature, and learn about the local environment and its native plants and animals. Special Events are a great way to get involved. On March 19, 2016, BVAS Nature Center will host its sixth Annual Bird House Auction from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Primarily volunteers run BVAS, so they’re always looking for interested community members to get involved.

Oceanside Outrigger Canoe Club Ready to paddle at Oceanside Harbor WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
The beauty and tradition of tropical Hawaii can be found at Oceanside Harbor. The long, graceful canoes that glide through the water with their paddlers calling “hike, hut, ho” are part of the Oceanside Outrigger Canoe Club (OOCC). Oceanside Outrigger Canoe Club is a group consisting of 180 members that range in age from twelve to 72 years. The members are friendly, athletic, and competitive. They’ve become part of the Oceanside seascape as they “hike, hut, ho” their way out of the harbor and into the Pacific Ocean.

44 THEOSIDER.COM
Around the 1700s, outriggers gave way to more common European boats, but were brought back to popularity around 1875 by King David Kalakaua. In 1908, the Outrigger Canoe Club was founded in Hawaii when the resurgence of the outrigger gained popularity because of its traditional Hawaiian ties. Outrigger canoe racing jumped to the mainland and arrived in California around 1936 and present day can be found nationwide. Outrigger canoe clubs have been part of Oceanside Harbor’s scenery since 1990. In 1990, the Pao Pao Club tested the waters of Oceanside Harbor and decided to make the harbor its outrigger home. The Makena Ka Kai Club started in 1997 and was a welcome addition to the outrigger fellowship. The two clubs merged in 2007 to create one oceanloving, ohana-loving, canoe-loving club: The Oceanside Outrigger Canoe Club. Oceanside Outrigger Canoe Club is one of twenty-five members of SCORA (Southern California Outrigger Association) that meet and race throughout the season (May through September). Races take place along the California coast from San Diego to Avila Beach. At each race meeting, members revel in the friendship of fellow racers from different clubs. Committed members that are hardcore paddlers can take part in the popular races of Molokai Challenge, Queen Liliokalani (Big Island), and the Catalina Crossing. Oceanside Outrigger Canoe Club enjoys its prime season, beginning around spring’s daylight savings time—when days are longer, and paddling time is maximized. Anyone age nine and up is welcome and encouraged to go through the novice program to gain the necessary skills for both recreation and racing. New men and women interested in racing can join introductory paddles and instruction beginning the end of February and through March (please visit their website for specific information). If interested, contact OOCC, and meet at the canoe yard at the appointed time in workout attire that can get wet. Be ready to
“Outrigger canoe clubs have been part of Oceanside Harbor’s scenery since 1990.” head out into the open ocean on your first visit! The Keiki (child in Hawaiian) program is for boys and girls ages nine through nineteen and starts later in the season when school’s out. The Oceanside Outrigger Canoe Club strongly encourages youth to get involved in the teambuilding sport because they recognize that the youth are the future of the organization and strengthen the ohana (family in Hawaiian) bond. Keiki’s, in turn, will learn traditions surrounding paddling, team responsibility, respect, and healthy competition in team sports. OOCC members that participate in both racing and recreation have great stories to share. Recently, two recreational paddlers recounted the story of paddling out to sea in Oceanside, stopping to laze for a bit with their feet hanging in the water, when a Hammerhead shark cruised by just inches from their feet. Whale tales are common, too. Spending a lot of time on the open ocean and being on the migratory whale path,
many paddlers can share their whale-viewing experiences—including curious whales that hang with canoes for a while. Dolphins are common and always a pleasant visitor during paddles. The club is like family and welcomes everyone interested in joining. According to OOCC, “Embrace the aloha while learning and participating in this ancient Hawaiian tradition. Outrigger canoe racing is a great way to stay in shape while enjoying the ocean and outdoors.” The Oceanside Outrigger canoe yard is located in the heart of Oceanside Harbor, adjacent to the harbor boat launch ramps.

PACIFIC COAST CYCLES ALL THINGS BIKING
Owners Chuck and Gretchen Hoefer
WORDS: ALYSON KLIER PHOTOS: JT RHOADES The gorgeous weather we experience yearround in Oceanside allows our lucky visitors and residents to enjoy many outdoor recreations. One of the most popular outdoor activities around here is definitely bicycling. Whether you ride for commuting, touring, endurance, or just for fun—Pacific Coast Cycles has you covered for all things biking. Conveniently located on the South Coast highway and just a block from the bike path, Pacific Coast Cycles is an award-winning bike shop where you can find the parts to build your own bike, have one built for you, or buy a bicycle used or new. The shop is relatively small from the outside, but step inside and you’ll be awed by the amount of gear, parts, and product covering the walls from the floor to the ceiling. If you’re looking for a specific part, you can almost be assured they’ll have it, and if they don’t—they can get it for you. In fact, Pacific Coast Cycles is often the place other bike shops go when looking for hardto-find parts. If you want a true bike shop—not just a bike store—this is the place! Pacific Coast Cycles is owned and operated by Chuck and Gretchen Hoefer. Both have had a lifelong interest in biking, and Chuck has been working in the cycling industry since 1971. A coveted position working at Masi in Carlsbad brought Chuck to the area in the 70s. In 1977, he

opened his own shop—actually in the same location as his current shop. Chuck moved his business to Carlsbad for a bit, but moved back to the South Coast highway location in 2003 and has enjoyed being an Oceanside businessman ever since. Chuck handles repairs of new and vintage bikes (from the 1960s up) in the back of the shop and he’s an expert wheel builder. He doesn’t work on beach cruisers, but the shop stocks them for purchase from a company in Huntington Beach. One of the things Chuck and Gretchen love about being an Oceanside business is the sense of family community they experience here. Pacific Coast Cycles has many regulars and multiple generations of families that frequent the shop for their cycling needs. Employees tend to work there for the long term, so it’s easy to find a familiar face when you visit. Chuck and Gretchen are still avid cyclists and often attend community events in support of bike safety. At Pacific Coast Cycles you can get a bike tuned, painted, brazed, filed, tapped, faced, or chased— or you could just go in and chat with Gretchen as she bustles about keeping the shop organized. Whatever your cycling needs, make sure you pay a visit here—you won’t be disappointed!

THE WHET NOODLE JAPANESE-INSPIRED RAMEN HOUSE WORDS: JAMEY STONE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER Chef Davin Waite is no stranger to the growing food scene here in Oceanside. The founder of The Fish Joint and current owner of Wrench and Rodent Seabasstropub, Davin has been delivering a variety of seafood creations with his own special twists for his faithful patrons for years. So when the space he shared with Bull Taco became available, he jumped at the chance to expand and bring something new to the table. But what would that be? After months of research, he decided on an Oceanside inspired Ramen house with Japanese influence. Hence, the Whet Noodle was born. Right when you walk in the front door, you get an immediate feel for Davin’s style. The handcrafted wooden tables and bar area are complimented by original Keith Lord artwork, along with the original Fish Joint sign. Local photographers’ photos and Davin’s musical influences hang throughout the space.

The smell of rich duck shoyu broth permeates your senses—yes, duck Ramen is a star of the current offering and it’s amazing. It starts with slow roasted duck, fresh local Cyclops Farm veggies, perfectly prepared noodles, and don’t forget the perfectly prepared soft boiled egg. You can also try it with the hot and sour miso broth. Like the classic Ramen houses of Japan, you choose the broth and protein (Tofu, Pork, Fish, or Duck) along with additions like garlic chips, roasted carrots, and shrimp tempura to round out your bowl of deliciousness. From there, Sous Chef Tyson Rodda will put it all together fresh, hot, and ready to go. The Ramen can be accompanied with beer, wine, and appetizers such as seaweed salad, wings of the Sea, baked scallops, and local seasonal veggies. I love the idea that everything served here will constantly be changing based on availability of ingredients and the creativity of Davin and his sous chef. If you haven’t already tried the Whet Noodle, what are you waiting for? Get in there and give your taste buds a real flavor explosion.

FRATELLI’S ITALIAN KITCHEN TRADITIONAL CUISINE WORDS: BRYN HERRLEIN PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER
Fratelli’s means “brothers” in Italian and like most Italians, they’re passionate about two things: family and food. Owners Brandon and Austin Lorber are not Italian—they look more like Vikings, so why Italian food? Preparing and eating a meal in Italy is practically a religious event where you take an extended pause. Admiring the Italian way of life led them to create Fratelli’s, where their Oceanside community could do just that. Originally from Escondido, both Lorbers paid their dues in the hospitality industry. Brandon and Austin’s experience at Arterra in the Del Mar Marriott (working under esteemed Market Chef Carl Schroeder) led them to the realization that hospitality is their calling. Complementing personalities, Brandon naturally
52 THEOSIDER.COM
became general manager and Austin became the workhorse of the Fratelli’s kitchen. Fratelli’s is a Mission San Luis Rey institution where you’re treated like family. The servers are warm, friendly, and polite. You’ll find regulars who like to sit at the bar and drink Lavazza espressos while they read the paper—chatting it up before they eat their meal. Chef Kyle Dunkelberg is a purist, dedicated to making Italian classics by insisting on using the best quality ingredients available. Every meal begins with complimentary La Jolla Bakery warm bread and fresh herb dipping sauce. A crisp, colorful, and flavorful Italian Garden Salad is an excellent starter. Their most popular dish, Meat Lasagna, lives up to its reputation—a must-have! The Penne Kalamata wove delicate flavors of olives and tomatoes in an authentic Italian fashion. The “Whole Nine Yards” Pizza lives up to it’s name. The Raspberry Ricotta Cheesecake is so light,
fluffy, and delicious that you’ll not want to share. Last summer, when a fire interrupted their flow, the Fratelli brothers were happily surprised that customers visited daily, concerned whether their favorite restaurant would reopen. The Lorbers truly realized they had the support of their community once they reopened their doors. To pay homage to Oceanside, they commissioned a local artist to create stained glass images of the Mission and Oceanside Harbor. In addition, they participated in the “Cuisine for Kids” fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club. Stop in and experience Fratelli’s for yourself. You’ll be glad you did! Rookies Sports Bar has been serving families in Oceanside fun and great food for over twenty years. Located just off the 78 Freeway and El Camino Real, Rookies has proven themselves to be one of the top sports bars in North County. The restaurant can hold up to 200 people and often can reach maximum capacity when there are playoff games or live music. They have 30 draft beers and a huge array of spirits, so there’s sure to be something to please everyone. You’ll also love their food menu—which isn’t just “bar food.” The burgers and wings are indeed delicious, but they also have pizzas, seafood, steak, and wraps on the menu. Owner Kristin Cates grew up in North County and has been at Rookies for twelve years, working her way up from server to bartender and eventually owner. Kristen and her husband Rich met while she was working at Rookies, and together they’ve kept the local neighborhood vibe alive. Their dedication to serving active military and veterans is close to their hearts, since Rich is a veteran himself.
Like so many citizens in Oceanside who were brought here for the military and stayed because of our city’s beauty, Kristin and Rich are happy to be Oceanside business owners. With Kristen’s extensive restaurant knowledge and passion for the business, Rookies is a great place to catch a game on one of their many TVs and meet with friends and family. There are many new restaurants opening up in Oceanside and competition can be pretty intense. This hasn’t affected Rookies and its loyal patrons, though. Twenty years in the business speaks for itself, and with Kristin and Rich at the helm—twenty more doesn’t seem improbable. If you’re looking for a great place to see live music, watch the game, or bring the family to enjoy a good meal—why not try what the locals have known about for two decades. The friendly staff and great happy hour will definitely keep you coming back for more.

“It truly was a very good experience working with John Beran’s office and his entire team. John and his team are very professional and made us feel like family. They went over and beyond to meet our needs and made it a very smooth transaction. I would recommend John Beran and his team to friends and family for any of their Real Estate needs.” - Alice Z. “Only when I receive exceptional service do I write a review. John Beran did an exceptional job in selling our oceanfront home. Since we live out of state we felt it was extremely important that we find someone who was knowledgable about values, knows the area, and has a great reputation. John was the perfect man for the job. He is an expert in high end properties, deals wonderfully with people and above all is very professional and ethical.” - John & LeeAnne M.
