JOY TO THE WORLD The Carols by Candlelight held at the Old Harbour on Friday 16 December celebrated a tradition that has been part and parcel of Hermanus’s history since 1968. Presented by the Hermanus Rotary Club, this charity event saw residents and visitors gathering in the spirit of Christmas for a special evening under the stars. It is one of the many highlights on the holiday calendar – check out The Good Guide on P18 and P19 for more information on markets, movies, concerts and other things to do if you need a break from the beach. The folks at The Village NEWS will also be taking a break over Christmas and New Year, and the next edition will be out on 17 January. We wish everyone a blessed festive season and a prosperous New Year. PHOTO: Keith Murray Imaging
‘Tis indeed a jolly season in the Overstrand De Waal Steyn
T
his holiday season is without a doubt shaping up to be the best one yet for our region, says Frieda Lloyd, Manager of Cape Whale Coast Tourism. “What sets this year apart from others is not only the sheer volume of tourists, with accommodation establishments and holiday
houses filled to the brim, but also the number of activities that are available to holidaymakers.” Furthermore, bookings for accommodation and activities have been confirmed for the next two months, right through to the end of February. “This means that the season will last longer than anticipated. Contrary to the last few years when visitors stayed for short periods, they
have this season booked for longer periods and are spending most, if not all, of their holidays in the area.” The social and activities calendar is filled with events ranging from movie nights at three locations in the Overstrand, to several music shows, both a wine and craft beer festival, regular wine tasting excursions and a host of sporting events. The parkrun, held every
Saturday morning at Camphill, drew more than double the normal number of runners this weekend and the 10 km Onrus Fun Run also drew a record number of entries. Adventure activities such as kayaking, zip lining and mountain, dune and quad biking are also attracting large numbers of participants. Says Frieda: “Holidaymakers do not spend the whole day lazing at the beach
anymore. They are looking for fun activities to take part in, especially if they have children. Healthier lifestyle choices have also made sporting and adventure activities more popular. “In addition to this increase, wineries have reported record numbers of visitors to their tasting rooms. It is interesting to note that those visiting the wine farms are avid wine enthusiasts and the
sales patterns indicate that they are investing in more expensive wines. “The Whale Coast now offers such a wide variety of activities and attractions that visitors do not need to travel over the mountain for extra entertainment. With the success of this season and the fact that we are drawing higher income visitors, the Cape Whale Coast is showing its mettle as a preferred holiday destination.”
