The Hermanus protest march on Friday 7 April was well supported notwithstanding heavy rain and wind. Hundreds of people from all walks of life, representing all communities of the Overstrand, attended. Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his wife Leah also participated.

T

he recent economic upheaval in South Africa has left many residents with concerns about their financial situation. Therefore residents of the Overstrand can breathe a sigh of relief that Overstrand Municipality has endeavoured to produce a prudent draft budget for the 2017/2018 financial year.

The recent downgrading of the SA economy to junk status and the effects thereof will not lead to an increase in the proposed tariffs. Any shortfall created by this will be

absorbed by curtailing expenditure and revenue surpluses,” said Finance Portfolio Committee Chairman and Deputy Mayor Dudley Coetzee. And other electricity? With the approval of the current budget, Overstrand Municipality has started to increase the basic charge for electricity so as to shift the cost of providing the service out of the consumption tariff to the basic charge. National

Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has approved a 1,88% increase for electricity tariffs charged by municipalities. This draft budget increases the basic charge for electricity by 5% and offsets this by decreasing the tariff for the first 350 units by 0,15%. From 351 to 600 units the tariff increases by 1,75% and above 600 units the increase is 1,88%. Read more on P3
