“Woven Bonds”
My design seeks to evoke a sense of togetherness, creating a vibrant and cohesive space, as found within the beauty and strength of Traditional Afghanistan rugs. A place of solace and empowerment, where the spirit can flourish amidst new beginnings. Spaces encourage interaction and collaboration through intimate gathering spaces filled warm color and soft textures.

Program and Adjancency Matrix

Block Diagrams and Schematic Plans
The design emphasizes interaction and collaboration, with intimate gathering spaces. These elements provide comfort and also encourage social engagement among refugees and the Rose City Park community, promoting a sense of community and support.

On the first level, a dynamic array of spaces awaits, including a cafe, community hall, classrooms, social service area, and public restrooms. Wide corridors gracefully interconnect these areas, creating a fluid movement reminiscent of navigating through the halls of a traditional mosque. This layout fosters a sense of exploration and community engagement, inviting visitors to seamlessly roam and discover the various offerings of the center.
Lobby Design Development
Lobby design is inspired from the traditional weaving tool the Loom.Visualized as threads ascending from the floor to the ceiling, the design forms the shape of Afghanistan’s map, mirroring the diverse threads of people coming together to form a cohesive bond, much like the intricate patterns found in traditional Afghan rugs. Through this representation, the design seeks to evoke a sense of togetherness, reminiscent of the beauty and resilience inherent in Afghan culture and craftsmanship.

Cafe Design Development

The cafe in the building is strategically positioned along the street side to catch the attention of passersby. Its open ceiling extends to the second floor, encouraging a sense of connectedness within the space. Adjacent to the cafe is the community hall, featuring expansive arch-shaped glass windows that maintain a visual connection between the spaces.

The walls of the cafe are constructed with wooden partitions, inspired by the traditional Afghan seating arrangements found in restaurants. Additionally, the walls are adorned with hung carpets, showcasing the intricate patterns and beauty of traditional Afghan carpet designs.

On the second level, there are four residential units, one of which is designed to be accessible under ADA guidelines. Additionally, there’s a communal kitchen, a prayer/stretching room, and a central gathering area at the open space overlooking the first floor, facilitating connectivity between all the spaces.

This floor is curated to evoke a homely ambiance, characterized by soothing patterns and a cool color palette comprising whites, blues, and cream tones. These hues not only foster a sense of comfort but also establish a visual connection with the surrounding locality, ensuring a harmonious integration of the building within its environment.

“Flowing
Unity”
Just as rivers merge and flow together, the city’s residents have united despite historical challenges to create a vibrant and resilient community. Drawing inspiration from the metaphor of rivers converging to symbolize the coming together of diverse cultures, backgrounds and encapsulates the essence of unification between West and East Berlin, this interior design concept celebrates the city’s resilient spirit.
Through fluid lines, reflective surfaces, and a harmonious palette of blues, greens, and earth tones, our space embodies this spirit of unity, fostering a tranquil atmosphere that honors the interconnectedness of all elements within.

Lobby Design Development

The lobby is designed to exude luxury and elegance from the moment guests enter. A grand staircase, symbolizing the concept of flowing unity, ascends gracefully from both sides directly in front of the entrance, creating a stunning focal point.
Enhancing the serene ambiance, the lobby also features biophilic elements, such as lush plants and tranquil water bodies, promoting the well-being of all who enter.

Lobby Perspective Sketches

Enhancing the sense of grandeur, wave-form chandeliers gracefully hang over the reception desk and cascade from the second-floor ceiling over the grand staircase, adding a touch of opulent fluidity.

Lobby 3D Perspectives

Vertical lines are strategically used to create the illusion of a vast, expansive space, capitalizing on the impressive 15-foot ceilings.
The seating area beside the staircase, situated in front of the reception desk, provides a comfortable spot for guests to admire local Berlin art displayed on the walls.

Guest Suites Design Development
The design transitions from the ground floor’s grandeur to a more serene and calming atmosphere on higher floors.
The guest suites offer a relaxing and calm contrast to the opulent lobby. Designed to evoke a comfortable, home-like vibe, the suites incorporate hints of the same luxurious materials found in the lobby, yet with a softer, more soothing ambiance.

Elevations

Rendered Perspectives
A unique pivoting wall with a TV allows guests to enjoy entertainment from both the bed and the living room, enhancing comfort and convenience.

The curvature of the walls extending seemlesly towards the ceiling and merging, serves as a visual representation of the concept “flowing unity”.
