Kelly KASPER Assistant Coach 1st Season

2013-14 ROSTER

Heather LaFontaine enters her first season as head coach of the women’s basketball program. The long-time Physical Education teacher at Paul Dwyer in Oshawa and Father Leo J Austin in Whitby has led her high school teams to an amazing 14 Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (LOSSA) Championship titles and an equally impressive 14 trips to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Provincial Basketball Championships. Her basketball resume also includes co-founding and coaching rep club teams in the successful and well-respected Whitby Wildcats Basketball Club program for the past 16 years, which she is still actively involved with.

Other coaching benchmarks and accomplishments for LaFontaine, who currently is a Guidance Counselor at Austin, includes involvement with the Toronto Raptors Basketball Camp, original Durham College Kids Summer Basketball Camp program, Dick Baumgartner Basketball Shooting Camp (Indiana) and Future Stars Basketball Camp. She has been recognized with the prestigious Pete Bleach Award for outstanding contribution to High School Athletics in Durham Region; the Colin Hood Award for contributions to high school athletics in Ontario; the OFSAA Leadership Award; prestigious Ontario Volunteer Service Award in 2012 and the Basketball Ontario Volunteer Recognition Award.

STATE OF THE ART FACILITIES

The Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre (CRWC), which opened in 2007 is the crown jewel of athletics, health and fitness at Durham College and UOIT. The centrepiece of the state-of-the-art $17 million facility is the new 28,500 sq. ft. gymnasium. The new gymnasium is fully equipped with a top of the line shock resistant maple hardwood floor, seating for 2,000 spectators and a curtain system to create three separate gyms. The large gym is also host to an elevated, 200 metre, three-lane running track. Also part of the CRWC is an additional 13,500 sq. ft. gym. The secondary gymnasium features a curtain system to create two separate courts, two scoreboards, a media gondola and bleacher seating for 1000 spectators. The CRWC also contains ten large team rooms with showers, perfect for tournament and special event use. These rooms are used to host annual tournaments such as the David Stewart Tip-Off Tournament, the Killer Instinct Cup and the Big 8 Classic. The FLEX Fitness Centre is one of the great new additions of the CRWC. It is 10,000-sq. ft., full of the best stat-of-the-art cardio and weight machines. The centre also includes two aerobic/dance studios, two training rooms used for sports training and fitness related classes. Also available to the athletes is a brand new physiotherapy room, massage therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic services in the Campus Health Centre. Having these services all under one roof will allow for quicker care, which in turn will result in quicker recovery and a return to game action.
