Summer 2012

The 2012 spring book sale marked another successful event for the Friends of the Durham Library. Annually, bargain-seeking customers far and wide flock to the library during the three-day affair, and this year was no exception. New Friends, long-time members and those renewing memberships braved long lines extending around the library for priority entrance during the “Friends members only” kickoff Friday afternoon. By the end of the weekend, happy customers purchased more than $22,000 in books, DVDs and CDs.

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the Friends and the library, from volunteers to each customer. These contributions make so many library projects possible. If you missed the book sale, don’t despair: opportunities to support the library and Friends this year are plentiful. Satellite sales are ongoing at every library location and on the American Tobacco Campus, and preparations for the next book sale, to be held Friday, October 12–Sunday, October 14 are well under way. So, save this date. We’ll see you soon!

Introducing New Deputy Director: Terry Hill

P

lease join us in welcoming Terry B. Hill as the new deputy director of the library.

Terry is a native of Taylorsville, NC. He earned his Masters in Library Science from UNC-Chapel Hill, and most recently worked as the assistant to the Vice Provost and Director of Libraries at North Carolina State University.

Terry has a diverse background. He began his work with libraries as an undergraduate at Appalachian State and Duke University. He gained collection development experience as a librarian at Hope Valley Elementary School, and as a subscription agent for the international book vendor Harrassowitz. Terry also taught at both UNC and NCCU’s library schools, and he is passionate about mentoring people entering the library profession.

As an active member of the community, Terry tutors at the Durham Literacy Center and serves as a guardian ad litem.

Terry and his wife, Tracy, live in Durham, along with their

miniature schnauzer Cornel. He began as deputy director at Durham County Library on April 30.

“The greatest honor of my career is the opportunity to work with the staff of Durham County Library, and to serve the residents of Durham County,” Terry said. “My vision Terry B. Hill, Deputy Director for the library is for it to become an even more integral part of what makes Durham the great community it is known to be.”

Peeps Show 2012 Even Bigger

T

he second annual Durham County Library Peeps Show is in the history books, and it was bigger and better than last year. To highlight library services and collections, staff members throughout the system created 13 dioramas featuring Peeps, the marshmallow, spring candy bunnies and chicks. This year some younger customers got in on the act as well. Though they could not compete, children at McDougald Terrace and East Regional made their own peep-o-ramas.

More than 200 peep fans visited the library to vote on their favorite display, and more than 550 votes were cast by liking peep-o-rama photos on Facebook.

In the end, the top three vote getters were: 207 votes: East Regional Teens – East Geekster Peeps 165 votes: Marketing and Development – Food Truck Rodeo Peeps Edition 111 votes: Main Library Adult Services – Peeple Magazine Congratulations to all the participants for proving that Durham County Library peeps are the coolest on the planet.

Winners will receive prizes at the spring Staff Development Day, May 16.

Bragtown Library Family Literacy Center Celebrates 50 Years of Service to the Community

B

ragtown Library Family Literacy Center hosted an open house on March 9 celebrating its 50th anniversary.

County commissioners, former staff and members of the community visited during a full day of programs that included a comedian for adults, Skill Toys for teens and a Rags to Riches performance for children. Earlier in the month, County Commissioners approved a resolution congratulating Bragtown on turning one half century old.

In 1961, residents of the Bragtown neighborhood raised funds for a new library and deeded the land at Ruth Street and Dearborn Drive to the Durham Colored Library. The Bragtown Branch Library was dedicated and began serving the community on March 11, 1962. In April of 1966, the Durham Colored Library merged with the Durham CityCounty Public Library, and Bragtown became part of the new Durham County Library system.

Today, Bragtown Library continues to serve its community with storytimes in English, Spanish and French for children and toddlers, tutoring for school-aged children, and neighborto-neighbor programs that engage adults and seniors. Last year, Bragtown Library had more than 6,800 visits; it hosted 128 programs, which were attended by approximately 2,000 children, teens and adults; and it provided access to technology as visitors logged 1,190 computer sessions. All of this in a 1,000 sq. ft. facility, open 20 hours a week.

GlaxoSmithKline Funds Science Madness

T

hanks to a $25,000 grant from the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation, Durham County Library has launched free science programs for children ages 3 to 14. Science Madness is offered at North, Southwest and East Regional Libraries, and at the Bragtown Library Family Literacy Center. Library Youth Partners, high school students trained to deliver storytimes and activities to pre‐K and elementary school children, also take the program into the schools and community centers of Durham.

Science Madness, hands‐on science activities at the library, encourages children to have fun while exploring nature, numbers, chemistry and physics, and boosting their reading and writing skills. One highlight of the program is the Science of Hovercraft series, where children build their own hovercraft with CDs and balloons and ride in an individual‐sized hovercraft to experience near frictionless motion.

Hands‐on science activities have been tailored to each age group.

unded by a grant of nearly $10,000 to Durham Library Foundation, Durham County Library hosted Bull City Soul Revival, an exploration of the rich history of the soul and R&B music tradition in Durham.

This four-part series of educational, interactive events was held throughout the month of April and showcased Durham’s African-American musicians from the 1960s and 1970s. The series included lectures hosted by Dwandalyn Reece, Curator of Music and Performing Arts, Smithsonian Top: Johnny White and the Elite Band perform Institution National at the finale. Explorers. Each science activity, such as the Wonders of Water and Counting, is supported with a storytime related to the topic. For older children, the library offers Science Madness. Elementary school students (ages 8-11 years) and middle school students (ages 12‐14 years) explore five science concepts, (levers and pulleys, electricity, weather, hovercraft and human biology) in two separate clubs, with instruction, science activities and reading lists designed for each age group.

University; local historian, Dr. Bruce Bridges; and Jason Perlmutter, discographer, researcher and founder of Carolina Soul.

A highlight of the series was a finale concert featuring musicians of today and yesterday, including Johnny White & the Elite Band, Lady Jaisun of the Risse Band, The Beast, Apple Juice Kid and The Black Experience. These musicians honored the past, and represented the future of Durham’s soul renaissance.

Another highlight was the well received Bull City Soul Revival exhibit, Soul Souvenirs, which will run through May 30, 2012 at Hayti Heritage Center. Viewed by hundreds of soul music fans already, the exhibition includes posters, albums, ticket stubs and other memorabilia from the golden age of soul, funk and R&B in Durham.

Coordinated by Stanford L. Warren librarian, Carter Cue, the project was made possible by funding from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. This project is also made possible by funding from Durham Library Foundation.

The Beast

Friends Fund Library Staff Proposals

A

s summer fast approaches, Durham County Library patrons and staff will soon benefit from new products, services and programs made possible through funding provided by the Friends.

Monies raised, primarily through the Friends’ membership drives and book sales, are allocated yearly during two funding cycles to financially support projects not included in the system’s budget. In December, after careful consideration of many proposals submitted by library staff, the Friends’ board approved funding in the amount of $49,594.79 for 12 proposals.

Approximately $26,000 was approved to purchase new equipment, including portable sound systems for system-wide use, Blu-ray players and a programming laptop for Stanford L. Warren. Main will also acquire a new computer lab with SMART Board technology, and teen patrons will enjoy a new computing area at Main in an area designated especially for them.

Other projects funded will enhance programmatic support. New podium lecterns for South and Main will be unveiled, and the library system will launch a collection of video language ESL DVDs to meet the demands of the library’s growing community of English language learners. Stellar program initiatives – the 2012 Comics Fest and the Festival of Romance at Southwest – received funding, and North’s CD collection will now be housed in a new shelving system. Teens at Stanford L. Warren will reap the benefits of comfortable new furniture, and patrons of all ages will enjoy the new costume of DCL mascot, Booker the Fox.

All of these projects were approved during the fall funding cycle, and there’s certainly more to come as proposals for the spring 2012 funding cycle are currently under deliberation. None of these projects would be possible if not for the contributions and support from Friends like you. The impact of these funded initiatives promises to be wide reaching, helping greater numbers of patrons experience the benefits of the library. Your contributions – as members, volunteers and patrons – are invaluable, and for this we say “Thank you!”

The Friends New Logo The Friends unveiled a new logo this spring.

Created by Hitoko Ueyama-Burke in the library’s Marketing and Development Division, the logo incorporates the familiar look and color of the previous icon, but it updates the script font of the capital “F” and incorporates a striking floral accent. The logo represents the tradition and history of the Friends, and the organization’s relevance and forwardthinking nature.

HOW TO DONATE BOOKS: The Friends of the Durham Library welcomes donations of gently used books, audiobooks, CDs and DVDs, except for: encyclopedias, magazines, cassettes and condensed books. You may take your donation to any Durham County Library location during regular hours. Please bring large donations (more than one bag) to the Main Library garage on Tuesday morning between 9 and noon, when the Friends of the Durham Library are present and can help unload. Durham County Library Dedicates Outdoor Art and Periodicals Room at South Regional

T

he South Regional Library Periodicals room will now be known as the Anton and Valerie Schindler room, after a naming ceremony held on April 26, 2012. The Schindlers were researchers who worked at Research Triangle Park, and who valued the learning and space for contemplation and creativity embodied by the library. Dr. Schindler bequeathed more than $118,000 to Durham Library Foundation to support the library in its mission.

Earlier in the day, Durham County Library Director, Tammy Baggett, unveiled a plaque identifying the outdoor artwork, ‘Stephen’s Bent,’ which is sited at the entrance to the library. The plaque commemorates the life of Mary D. Herndon, in whose honor and memory the artwork was commissioned.

The C. M. Herndon Foundation donated $110,000 to Durham Library Fund in order to make the 17-foot structure a reality.

“The artwork and the naming of our public spaces are tangible reminders of the support this community shows for its library,” Baggett said. “We are honored by the generosity of the C. M. Herndon Foundation, the Schindlers and Durham Library Foundation, and by all of the people who give to the library of their time, energy and resources.”

The library will host additional dedications in the months to come. The community meeting room at North Regional Library will be named for Dorothy Gier on Tuesday, May 22 at 10 a.m. Ms. Gier donated her home to Durham Library Foundation. A work of art created and donated by artist Marjorie Pierson will be unveiled on Tuesday, June 5 at 6:30 p.m. at Southwest Regional Library.

Their ancestors settled the area over two centuries ago, and the family has been playing music for themselves and for community gatherings and dances for as long as anyone can remember. Roxboro St. Dr. Maurice Wallace, associate professor of English and African & African American Studies at Duke University, will discuss Pictures and Progress: Early Photography and the Making of African American Identity which he co-wrote with Shawn Michelle Smith. This book explores how prominent nineteenth-century African-American intellectuals and activists understood photography’s power to shape perceptions about race and employed. Featuring over 70 images, this book brings to light the wide-ranging practices of early African-American photography and studies the effects photography had on radicalized thinking.

Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St. Join Dr. Katherine Charron, associate professor of history at North Carolina State University, for a discussion of her book Freedom’s Teacher: The Life of Septima Clark.

In the mid-1950s, Clark developed a citizenship training program that enabled thousands of African Americans to register to vote.

Dr. Charron demonstrates Clark’s crucial role – and the role of many black women teachers – in making education a cornerstone of the twentieth-century freedom struggle. A book signing will follow the discussion.
