F r o m t h e D i r e c t o r : T a m my B a g g e t t I hope you end the year (2011) and begin the year (2012) thinking of how important the library is in your life. Our eight locations, as well as mobile and outreach services, continue to have a strong impact on the community and the quality of life that Durham County citizens have become accustomed to.

The vision of Durham County Library is one of passion for literacy, appreciation of the humanities and a love for people of all ages. It’s apparent in all that we do – from launching ebooks to offering workforce development assistance – we take great pride in having a library system that you can be equally proud of. This fiscal year has been extremely successful with: • 3,053,854 items circulated • 163,209 library card holders

• 459,212 public computer sessions • program attendance of 127,075

• 1,649,148 library visits

These numbers reflect that we are more than a New Year’s resolution, but rather an enduring part of each life that we touch. Despite the high numbers, we strive to do more. We are often described as the best kept secret in town. I urge you to tell your friends about us, and bring them to a program. Encourage them to become active supporters by joining the Friends of the Durham Library or making a donation to Durham Library Foundation. Let them know the value of being a Durham County Library card holder. It provides you with a collection of 659,031 items to select from, free of charge, and access to our virtual branch 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s the card that keeps giving and provides a high return on your investment.

What is a Story Sharing Kit? It is a storytime in a bag! Each kit is theme-based and supports the daycare curriculum (over 75 themes). The kits provide information in a variety of mediums: books, videos, cds, puzzles, puppets, flannel board stories, activity guides and more. The kits can only be checked out and returned at the Main Library’s Children’s Unit, as they must be verified for completion prior to check out and upon return.

The Gingerbread Boy Fast, fast, fast, I am! You can’t catch me, I’m the gingerbread man! Strange, he looks more like a boy to me. Come along with us as we see Gerry the gingerbread boy head down the road in search of his fortune. Gerry meets an inchworm, who is fast in her own way. After a quick game, Gerry is back on the road, where he meets a busy little spelling bee, who is also fast in her own way. Busy is the best speller in her class. One spelling competition in the books, and Gerry heads out in search of his destiny. It is soon that he meets, Tammy the turtle and gets into a knock- down, racers race that leads him, well, we will see if it leads Gerry anywhere in the end.

THE STORIES OF PIEDMONT NORTH CAROLINA FAMILIES DURING THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR Thursday, February 23, 7 p.m.

North Regional 221 Milton Rd. At the time of the Civil War, Stagville was the center of the largest plantation in North Carolina at the time of the Civil War with over 30,000 acres and over 900 enslaved people.

In 1865, Bennett Place was the site of the largest surrender of southern forces in the Civil War. After the war, Duke Homestead was the site of early tobacco factories that would grow to become American Tobacco. Meet with site managers Anton Mitchell from Stagville, John Guess from Bennett Place and Jennifer Farley from Duke Homestead for a lively discussion what was happening here before, during and after the Civil War.
