F r o m t h e D i r e c t o r : T a m my B a g g e t t I approach my one year anniversary with Durham County Library beaming with pride, a sense of accomplishment and enthusiasm. I’ve been especially proud of the level of community support through program attendance, checking out our resources, donations and the kind words that are so often extended. Durham County is truly a place where great things happen, and the library often serves as the community center that brings everyone together. Our programs are rich in history and reflective of what the community wants and needs. This publication is filled with exciting programs. In particular you will find programs in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, which is September 15 – October 15. You don’t want to miss the vast range of events that educate, inform and entertain. You will find programs with appeal for the entire family. It’s not often that you find a place that collectively engages the interest of so many individuals. I’ve enjoyed meeting so many of you in the community and hearing your view of the library as you’ve expressed your appreciation and shared your “happy library story.” I’ve also been fortunate enough to receive suggestions that have allowed the library system to flourish even more. Want to express yourself even further? Well, the opportunity is here! Participate in our Love My Library video contest and share your heartfelt feelings for the role that libraries have in your life. This contest is open to all ages, as well as businesses. I can’t wait to see what creative way you find to say “I love my library!” Library staff always like giving back to the community, and once again in November we will offer a literary gift to you. Season’s Readings has become a tradition of recommending books and movies that staff and volunteers have enjoyed throughout the year. This publication gives us a chance to pass along our favorite picks to you. Season’s Readings is funded by the Friends of the Durham Library. Durham County Library will also participate in a system-wide blood drive in November, as well as serving as a voting site at some locations – even more examples of how libraries serve as the community center. I would personally like an opportunity to engage the community even more by offering a time for lunch discussions with the Library Director. HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH COLORING CONTEST (All Ages) Thursday, Sept. 15 – Saturday, Oct. 15 In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, enter our Hispanic Heritage Coloring Contest. Ask for a Hispanic Culture coloring sheet at the desk. Children may use crayons, markers or paint to complete their project. The art work will be displayed within the unit. BLACK MEMORIALS AND THE BULLDOZER REVOLUTION IN DURHAM AND BEYOND Hayti Heritage Center Sunday, Oct. 23 2 p.m.- 4 p.m. Since the Civil War, Americans have wrestled with the various constructs of historical memory and cultural legacy. However, according to historian W. Fitzhugh Brundage, author of The Southern Past: A Clash of Race and Memory, these battles are ultimately about who has the power to determine what we remember of the past and whether that remembrance will honor all Southerners or only select groups. In this presentation and panel discussion, Brundage joins local business owner Denise Hester and other Durham educators, entrepreneurs and community activists to examine the impact of political power on cultural memory.

WATCH AND READ: THE AMERICAN MASTERS: JOHN MUIR Main Library Saturday, Sept. 10 3 p.m. John Muir is often referred to as the “father of wilderness.” Muir devoted his life to documenting the wonders of nature. He published articles extolling the beauty of places like Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Largely at his urging, Congress established Yosemite National Park in 1890 and created the National Forest reserves in 1891. MEET THE ARTIST/AUTHOR: KADIR NELSON AT THE HAYTI HERITAGE CENTER Hayti Heritage Center Monday, Sept. 19 7 p.m. Join award winning artist and author Kadir Nelson as he discusses how he created the art and text for Heart and Soul: The Story of American and African Americans and We are the Ship: The Story of the Negro League Baseball. Mr. Nelson has won the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, the Caldecott Honor Award, the Robert F. Sibert Award and the NAACP Image Award. He has written and illustrated over twenty-five books. One of his paintings was used for the cover art for Michael Jackson’s posthumous release, Michael. A book signing will follow the reading. Main Library Sunday, Oct. 2 3 p.m. The literary heritage of the state is decades old and continues to flourish today. What is it that creates this rich literary environment? Join Georgann Eubanks, Michael Chitwood, Marjorie Hudson and Randall Kenan as they discuss this phenomenon. Eubanks is one of the founders of the North Carolina Writers’ Network, past chair of North Carolina Humanities Council and author of the three volume series, Literary Trails of North Carolina. Chitwood is a freelance writer and poet, who teaches at UNC-Chapel Hill. His books include Hitting Below the Bible Belt and Gospel Road Going. Hudson is author of essays, short stories and most recently, Accidental Birds of the Carolinas. Kenan is an author and teaches at UNC-Chapel Hill. His first book, Let the Dead Bury their Dead was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and his Walking on Water: Black American Lives at the Turn of the Twenty First Century was nominated for the Southern Book Award.

Join playwright Mike Wiley and actors from PlayMakers in conversation before the professional premiere of The Parchman Hour. In the fiery first months of America’s civil rights movement, waves of young people, mostly college students, rode buses into the heart of the Deep South. Many were brutally attacked, arrested, and imprisoned in Mississippi’s notorious Parchman Farm Penitentiary, where they invented an ingenious pastime to help them endure: a live variety show inspired by programs then popular on radio and television. Jokes, stories, singing and Bible readings sprang from every cell. This nightly event became known as The Parchman Hour. With characters such as Stokely Carmichael, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, The Parchman Hour honors an important piece of our history.

Join UNC-TV staff in honoring North Carolina’s Greatest Generation with excerpts from North Carolina World War II Experience. The story is told by the men and women who lived it – local participants revealing a historical record of how one state and its people served America during the second World War. Through remarkable archival film footage and photographs and revealing personal interviews with 25 men and women, this original documentary brings history to life, from battlefield to the home front.

UNDER THE KUDZU: FILM AND DISCUSSION Main Library Sunday, Oct. 9 3 p.m. Join filmmaker Claudia Stack for a screening of Under the Kudzu, the story of two Pender County Rosenwald Schools and the communities working to save and repurpose them. Rosenwald schools are important as they are tangible reminders of a history, when every triumph for black education was the result of determination over adverse conditions. There will be a discussion following the film. This film was funded in part by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the True North Foundation.

BROTHER TOWNS/ PUEBLOS HERMANOS: FILM AND DISCUSSION ERC Auditorium, Durham Technical Community College Wednesday, Oct. 12 7 p.m. Pueblos Hermanos/Brother Towns is a story of two towns linked by Brother Towns Pueblos Hermanos immigration, family and work. (Pueblos Hermanos es una historia de dos pueblos conectado por inmigracion, familia y trabajo.) It chronicles how and why people migrate across borders, how people make and remake their communities when they travel thousands of miles from home and how people maintain families despite their leaving home. Because we are all immigrants, this is a universal human story, and a quintessential American one. It is also a story of local and international controversy. The film’s director, Dr. Charles Thompson, will moderate a discussion after the film and answer questions. WATCH AND READ: KEN BURNS’ PROHIBITION Southwest Regional Sunday, Oct. 30 3 p.m. Join UNC-TV staff for a screening of excerpts from Ken Burns’ newest film. Prohibition is a documentary film series that tells the story of the rise, rule, and fall of the Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the entire era it encompassed. It was the enshrining of a faithdriven moral code in the Constitution that paradoxically caused millions of Americans to rethink their definition of morality. The story of Prohibition’s rise and fall is a compelling saga that goes far beyond the oft-told tales of gangsters, rum runners, flappers, and speakeasies, to reveal a complicated and divided nation in the throes of momentous transformation.

Duke Professor Emeritus of Geology at GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University, for a discussion of his new book, Global Climate Change: A Primer. Learn why he believes some people work to obfuscate facts to the harm of all life. He will be joined by Mary Edna Fraser, whose silk batiks, often based on satellite images, beautifully illustrate the book. ART WITH THE EXPERTS: BECOMING: PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE WEDGE COLLECTION Main Library Sunday, Nov. 13 3 p.m. Join Trevor Schoonmaker, the Patsy R. and Raymond D. Nasher Curator of Contemporary Art, for a slideshow and discussion of Becoming. This exhibit brings together approximately 60 works by 40 artists from Canada, the United States, Africa and throughout the African Diaspora to explore how new configurations of identity have been shaped by the photographic portrait within the last century. Becoming offers a fresh exploration of the strength, beauty and complexity captured within representations of black life as it is both lived and imagined.
