D i r e c t o r ’s M e s s a g e To read the Durham County Library Blog, go to: http://dbtb.wordpress.com/ This has been a summer of change for Durham County Library.

Soon we will welcome a new library director to Durham County. After four years of visionary leadership, our former director Skip Auld has transitioned out to pursue a new direction. I speak for myself and the staff in warmly thanking him for all he did and wishing him the best in his future endeavors.

This summer we had the great experience of opening two new regional libraries. The first new facility was the much anticipated Southwest Regional Library. The second was the brand new South Regional Library, which replaced the Parkwood Branch. These facilities are already doing record-breaking business. Each of the new libraries is beautiful in its own way. I encourage you to visit them both.

Though we opened two new facilities, which were planned and provided for many years ago, the library could not escape current economic realities. With the tough budgetary climate, it was necessary to close early one night a week. In July, each facility began closing on Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m.

We’ve made a few changes in other areas as well. If you use our convenient holds/request service to have books sent directly to your local branch for pick up, you may have noticed that the maximum number of holds per customer has been decreased from 25 to 15. We’ve also increased the amount of time your materials can stay on the hold shelf to eight days. We hope these two changes will increase the speed with which holds are processed and decrease your wait time for new materials.

In the face of major changes this summer, our staff members continue to work as a team to bring you great customer service and a wonderful library experience. It is my honor to serve as interim director and to lead this dedicated team, and it is an honor to serve a community that values its library so highly.

Pronto le brindaremos una bienvenida a un nuevo director del sistema de la biblioteca. Después de cuatro años de liderazgo visionario, nuestro anterior director Skip Auld nos dejó para perseguir otras oportunidades. Yo hablo por mi misma y por todo el personal de la biblioteca en darle nuestras más calurosas gracias por todo lo que él hizo y le deseamos lo mejor en sus planes futuros.

Este verano tuvimos la gran experiencia de abrir dos nuevas bibliotecas regionales. La primera fue la muy anticipada apertura de la Southwest Regional Library. La segunda fue la nueva South Regional Library, la cual reemplaza a la Sucursal Parkwood. Estas instalaciones están ya rompiendo records. Cada instalación nueva de bibliotecas son bellas en su estilo propio. Les recomiendo que visiten a las dos.

Aunque abrimos dos instalaciones nuevas, las cuales planeamos y proveímos por muchos años, la biblioteca no pudo escapar de las realidades económicas del momento. Con el clima difícil de presupuestos, fue necesario cerrar temprano una noche a la semana. En el mes de julio, cada instalación de todo el sistema empezó a cerrar los miércoles a las 6pm.

Hicimos otros cambios en otras áreas también. Si usted usa nuestro conveniente servicio de apartar materiales (holds/request) que se mandan los libros apartados directamente a la sucursal más conveniente a usted para que los recoja, usted tal vez ha notado que el número máximo de apartados por cliente ha disminuido de 25 a 15. Se incrementó también la cantidad de tiempo que sus materiales pueden estar reservados en los estantes a ocho días. Esperamos que estos dos cambios aumente la velocidad en que los materiales reservados sean procesados y que el tiempo de espera se disminuya.

A pesar de cambios mayores este verano, nuestro personal continua trabajando como grupo para brindarles un gran servicio a nuestros clientes y una maravillosa experiencia en las bibliotecas. Es mi honor servir como directora interina y dirigir este grupo tan dedicado, y es un honor servir a una comunidad que valúa grandemente a este sistema de bibliotecas.

CELEBRATE HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH (All Ages) Sep. 15-Oct. 15 Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off Sept. 15. In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month enter our Hispanic Heritage Coloring Contest. Coloring sheets may be completed with crayons, markers or paint and will be displayed within the unit.

TAKE AND MAKE CRAFT (All Ages) Enjoy a pre-cut craft at home. The information sheet includes instructions and titles of books that support the craft’s theme, encouraging parents to create a storytime of their very own!
