All summer long, the library will feature programs and activities that showcase the many ways people can get creative at the library. In May, award-winning children’s book illustrator Colin Bootman and hilarious theater troupe Rags to Riches visited schools to encourage children to read, explore and create at the library during summer vacation.

Illustrator Encourages Students to Read During Summer Months

Then, on August 15, the library will reward readers for a summer of hard work with a grand finale, A Celebration of Reading, at the Main Library with drawings for exciting prizes such as new computers and digital cameras. During the finale, the library will once again partner with the Durham County’s Closing the Achievement Gap Task Force to give book bags and other school supplies to children who need them to start the 2009-10 school year off right.

In June and July, a limited number of school children at the Main Library will get to have Breakfast with Booker, the library fox, and lunch with other special guests. Other programs, including animal expert Birdman Dave, workshops to let participants try their hand at making balloon art, and the Get Creative with Bluegrass program, will be making the rounds at most library branches.

Children’s book illustrator, Colin Bootman, at Oak Grove Elementary Durham County Library wants to get its customers, young and old, to express themselves during the 2009 Summer Reading Club with the theme, “Be Creative @ Your Library.”

Summer Reading season kicks off with a carnival-style family reading festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 20 in the parking lot of the Main Library. For the rest of the summer, readers can earn treats and be entered in prize drawings by recording the time they spend reading or being read to. Readers will also have opportunities to participate in several special library programs designed to get the creative juices flowing throughout the summer.

“We absolutely want to encourage everyone to read,” said Karlene Fyffe, the library’s Youth Services Manager. “Reading is pleasurable on its own. But we want to emphasize that reading is also often the first step toward solving problems, forming new ideas and expressing yourself.”

It doesn’t matter whether you prefer fiction or nonfiction, picture books or chapter books, graphic novels or romance novels. The Summer Reading Club provides an incentive for all readers to settle down with a good book for at least 15 minutes a day. Developing a love of reading during summer vacation can help students earn better grades once school starts again and

The Family Summer Reading Club is for everyone in your family. Sign up yourself and all the children and teens in your family.

How do I register?

Summer Reading Club Finale Science in the Summer camps for elementary and middle school students Science in the Summer is a fun and free science education initiative that helps elementary and middle school children “grow into science.” The program is sponsored

by GlaxoSmithKline and administered by UNCChapel Hill’s Morehead Planetarium and Science Center.

Through camps held in partnership with Durham County Library and taught by certified teachers, this program gets kids excited about science with hands-on experiments.

Well here’s your chance. This workshop provides step-by-step, hands-on instructions in the use of the computer. In this two hour workshop, participants will learn about the parts of the computer and the basics of using one, including using the mouse, the basics of the Windows Operating System, making and managing folders and other important computer functions.

Web/Internet Basics:

Haven’t typed a letter since your typewriter died? Microsoft Word is a computer program used to create and print text documents that would otherwise be prepared on a typewriter. The key advantage of a word processor is its ability to make changes easily, such as correcting spelling, adding, deleting and relocating text. Once created, the document can be printed quickly and saved for later modifications. In this two hour workshop, you will learn the basics of using Microsoft Word. Prerequisite: completion of Computer Basics Workshop or basic computer and internet skills.

WWW, the Internet, browsing — What exactly are these things, and how do they work? If you are brand new to the Internet, this workshop is the perfect introduction. In this workshop, you will gain a basic understanding of what the Internet is and how it works. You will gain hands on experience “surfing the web” on the library’s computers. You’ll learn about search engines, how they work and and how to search more effectively. You will also learn about privacy and safety issues, such as viruses, worms, spyware and spam and how to recognize and avoid them. How to donate books: The Friends of the Durham Library welcomes donations of books, audiobooks, CDs and DVDs, except for: encyclopedias, magazines, cassettes and condensed books.

You may take your donation to any Durham County Library location during regular hours. Please bring large donations (more than one box) to the Main Library garage on Tuesday morning between 9 and noon, when the Friends of the Durham Library are present and can help unload.
