It turns out most of you think it isn’t broke; so we won’t fix it.

The Durham County Library magazine will continue to be called… Branching Out. Thanks for supporting the great programs at the Library!

Science in the Summer Camps for elementary and middle school students Author David Greenberg encouraging students at Mangum Elementary This summer, Durham County Library is encouraging all county residents to “Catch the Reading Bug,” through its annual Summer Reading Club.

Hundreds of students at eight elementary schools across the county have already gotten a head start, thanks to a visit from author and poet David Greenberg, author of several picture books including Bugs! Slugs! Snakes! and Skunks!

Greenberg was enthusiastically received when he visited Durham County to promote Summer Reading 2007. He was invited back this year because his poetry, filled with exciting images and infectious rhythms, fit nicely with this year’s summer reading theme, “Catch the Reading Bug.” Everyone in the county—babies, children, teens and adults—can join the club and earn prizes such as bug-themed bookmarks and buttons for reading (or being read to) this summer. The goal of the library’s Summer Reading Club is to combat “summer slide,” the phenomenon of children forgetting what they learned in school while their minds are idle for months at a time during summer vacation. The Summer Reading Club encourages families and children to read for fun, keep a log of their time spent reading, and participate in special prize drawings, including a drawing for personal computers and laptops.

Greenberg set the mood for summer reading by telling tales about “Beetles, Bedbugs, Bottle flies/Tarantulas the size of pies/With lots and lots and lots of eyes” from his poem book Bugs! His visit also coincided with the release of his latest book in the series, Crocs! Durham County students were among the first to see inside that book, which was published May 4.

“At Mangum, we rarely have the pleasure of an author. We just don’t have the funds,” the school’s Library Media Specialist Sandy Poston said after Greenberg’s visit. “So it is wonderful that the county Library would offer something like this. These books will appeal so much to my guys, who I can’t get to read poetry.”

Greenberg said that in addition to promoting summer reading on behalf of the library, he also visits schools to help encourage children’s love of his craft.

“I hope the next time you visit your library, you will all check out a book of poetry,” he told students at the end of his performance.

The Summer Reading Club kicks off Saturday, June 14 with activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Main Library, 300 Roxboro St., in downtown Durham. Please make plans to attend this fun-filled festival, register for the Durham County Library’s Summer Reading Club, and make a point to read for pleasure this summer.

Science in the Summer is a fun and free science education initiative that helps elementary and middle school children “grow into science.” The program is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline and administered by UNC-Chapel Hill’s Morehead Planetarium and Science Center.

Through camps held in partnership with Durham County Library and taught by certified teachers, this program gets kids excited about science with hands-on experiments.

The Herald Sun Newspapers-In-Education program in conjunction with our local public library, encourages students to take part in the library’s summer reading program,”Catch the Reading Bug,” and complete newspaper related activities available at the library. Anyone completing all eight activities and returning them to The Herald Sun Newspapers-InEducation department or to your local branch of the library, will have their name entered into a drawing for a prize.
