2 Your library system is being Durham County Library Raises transformed right before your eyes. $1.5 Million to Meet $500,000 If you have even once visited the new libraries over NEH Challenge Grant the past year (East Regional Library, Stanford L. Warren Library, and North Regional Library), then you know what I’m saying! Beginning about ten years ago, the County embarked upon development of a regional library system, with a full-service library within five miles of nearly every Durham County resident.

It went right down to the wire, but in the end the community came through for the Durham County Library, as it always has.

With the help of the people of Durham County, the Library has raised more than $1.5 million to meet the National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant of $500,000.

Regional libraries provide more space than the “branch libraries” of an earlier era for books, DVDs and CDs, as well as Teen rooms, Children’s program rooms, Priscilla Lewis community meeting rooms, and about 30 computers.

Facilities Director They use new digital scanning technology and selfcheckout, which is becoming more and more popular. And they are energyefficient and environmentally-friendly. Both East and North are LEED-certified.

(LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a rating system of the U.S. Green Building Council.)

“From the beginning of the campaign to the end, we saw communitywide enthusiasm and support for the library,” said Willis Whichard, chairman of the Durham Library Foundation. “More than 900 individuals, organizations and corporations made gifts to the library as part of the NEH Challenge Grant. Many of them gave more than once during the three-year campaign.”

In the end, the Library made the match with a comfortable margin, but as close as two weeks before the January 31, 2008 deadline, outstanding pledges threatened to leave the library $25,000 short of the goal. A realistic assessment determined that only half of those pledges would likely be fulfilled, leaving a $10,000 projected shortfall if no new donors were found. At that point the Foundation Board, the Friends of the Durham Library and library staff went into overdrive, appealing to major donors, sending emails to supporters and neighborhood listserves, making phone calls and spreading the word.

Over the next couple of years, you will see even greater transformation.

This summer, at the former Lowe’s Grove School property at N.C. 54 and Alston Avenue, groundbreaking for the new South Regional Library will take place.

South will replace Parkwood Branch Library in late 2009 or 2010. This library has been designed by The Freelon Group, as a modification of the prototype East and North Regional Libraries which were also designed by Freelon.

This spring we will begin a study of the Main Library for which we are planning a major renovation in the next 4 – 5 years. An architect will be selected to lead us in determining how the new Main Library can best meet the needs of the community.

It worked. Before the last day of the campaign, the library had met its goal.

“We had Durham County residents calling and coming by the Main library on January 31st to offer donations,” said Skip Auld, library director. “They realized that the challenge grant was ending, and they wanted to make sure the library succeeded in making the match.

We asked the community to support us and they responded with a resounding, ‘Yes!’”

The library system and County Engineering are working with Cherry Huffman Architects in the Design Development phase of architectural planning for Southwest Regional Library. A community meeting took place January 8 and another will be announced for early Spring, in order to present design concepts and hear again from the community. In the late Fall or Winter of this year, Southwest Branch Library will close for about a year for renovation and expansion from 10,000 square feet to about 25,000 square feet.

The NEH Challenge Grant will be used to establish a Humanities Endowment that will fund county-wide programs in partnership with Durham universities, public schools and other art, cultural and educational organizations.
