Due to our printer going on holiday I have done todays programme earlier than normal . Today I am hoping for a decent crowd and expect a hard local derby game which will be enjoyed by all . Since coming to Willington we have made some good friends of the field and I thank you all but on the field we would like 3 points . I have known Richard for some years now thats the chairman of Willington and has become a good friend but today I would like him to buy my pint in the bar and not the other way round .

Willington is a great old fashioned club but since Richard,s arrival has seen some big changes including in the changing rooms and standing areas and hopefully on the pitch with new equipment bought also with a few ex citizens in the squad with the likes of Lewis and Evan Graham and Connor Winter . Last season against Willington it was one of the highest gates here so lets hope their is a great atmosphere and Durham are cheered on to another league win .

Welcome everyone to Hall Lane Willington Today I guess is a local derby and as I know its always nice to win derbies I didn’t lose that many at Newcastle and Rangers so would like to continue here ,one thing we had was a good team spirit and we worked for each other and I believe Ollie and the lads have that . I never underestimate opponents and I belive Willington have improved from last season with some good signings .I would like to put on record a big thanks to Richard and his team for having us here .

Please get behind the lads and give your support and together we will get where we want to be .We do have to be patient but I believe we can do it with every ones help and support.

Players to watch today if playing

You might recognise these two lads from their playing days at Durham Both players have had numerous teams since leaving but both have also kept up their fitness. Lewis Graham Goalkeeper great reflexes on his day and Connor Winter who has the knack of finding the net .

Ben Joyeux a great young defender and Chris Pattinson both players came through the reserves and are both now on the fringe of the first team action .

Today we face a team with a number of players I know quite well and expect it to be a tough game I normally like to say we will have home advantage but today we are against a team who have played on the pitch week in week out and trained.

10

However like any other game I hope we are ready and get of to a quick start .I think the players are starting to believe in themselves now and our target is to reach the summit . As a club I know we have had our problems but I do believe we are now going in the right direction . Players are now fighting for places and its a hard job I am learning fast . Im excited about today and hope we play well and collect 3 points in front of a good crowd Please stay safe enjoy the game and cheer those lads onto victory thanks again to everyone for their support.

Club History

DURHAM CITY AFC

T

he club was first inaugurated in the 1918-1919 season, operating in the old Victory league, formed in celebration of the end of the First World War.

5

10

15

Afterwards, the team was admitted to the North Eastern League where they played for two seasons before being admitted to Division 3 North in 1921. The club operated in that league until 1928, when they failed to gain re-election and were replaced by Carlisle United F.C. The club reformed in 1950 and gained admission to the Wearside League, where they operated until 1952 before joining the Northern League where they remained until 2008. At the end of the 2007/08 season, their second Championship winning season the club finally achieved promotion to the UniBond First Division North. The club has occupied five different grounds since its formation. In their first season the club played at Garden House Park before moving to Kepier Heughs, near to the old Ferens Park ground where they stayed for four seasons. The club then moved on to Holliday Park (named after the late Alderman T.W. Holliday) where they stayed until 1938. The club’s fourth ground, named after the late Alderman H.C. Ferens, was acquired when the club reformed in 1950.

20

25

Alderman Ferens was for many years, prior to his death in 1975, President of the club and a generous benefactor in connection with the purchase of the land for that ground. Ferens Park was at that time probably one of the most attractive grounds in the Northern League. The ground hosted the club’s largest attendance, which stands at 7,000, for an F.A. Cup Second Round tie against Tranmere Rovers on 7 November 1957 which City lost 0-3. Durham City ground-shared with Consett AFC in2016/17 season before coming to Willington for the new season .
