The purpose of a Durham Academy education is to prepare each student to live a moral, happy and productive life. The development of intellect is central to such a life, and thus, intellectual endeavor and growth are the primary work of the school. The acquisition of knowledge; the development of skills, critical judgment and intellectual curiosity; and increased understanding are the goals of the school’s academic program.
Durham Academy’s 2021–2022 report recognizes all gifts received between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2022. Donor names are listed at the appropriate threshold for their giving during this fiscal year. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inadvertent omissions or errors. We invite you to contact us at philanthropy@da.org with corrections or questions.

While several COVID-19 waves churned up disorienting froth, three bedrock truths became clear:
Michael Ulku-Steiner Head of School

In recent decades, too many schools have been pulled off course by distracting or disproportionate pursuits: mistaking test results or college “outcomes” for human development; chasing victories in athletics, debate or any single realm at the cost of a balanced program; building an ostentatious campus or a culture overburdened by tradition and “prestige.”
• Field Days & Grandparents and Special Friends Days
• play active roles in their lessons;
In 2021–2022, we emerged from the thickest fog of the pandemic — feeling more intensely the pleasures of our campus community and thinking more strategically about who we want to be.
Thank you for your unwavering support of Durham Academy. It is through the commitment and dedication of our entire community that we are able to achieve greatness.
1. Relationships remain the beating heart of our school. What fun to see students running from their parents’ cars to see their friends and classmates. How gratifying to see so many alumni reconnecting on campus with beloved teachers. How wonderful to see parents forge friendships that last long past the graduations of their children. While health and safety remained paramount in 2021–2022, we happily reclaimed all kinds of in-person programs and traditions — the glue of our school culture and the sweetest fruit of living in community. Among the most memorable:
2. We are here to learn. Fully on campus from August to June, we were able to propel our students forward. Academic excellence continues to draw families and faculty to Durham Academy. By all measures, we continue to see impressive growth from our students and widespread acknowledgement that the quality of teacher-student interactions is most responsible for that growth.
3. We are increasingly clear about how and why we learn. In 2021–2022, we began to implement action steps toward the goals of our Strategic Vision (da.org/strategicvision). The core of that vision is informed by recent findings in brain science. We know that learning is deeper and more lasting when students:
• have more choice and voice in what and how they learn;
There were many more highlights — from the full seasons of our 40 athletic teams to the full slate of chorus, band and dance concerts, to the assemblies and morning meetings that unite each division of the school. Whether momentous or mundane, these gatherings reminded us how much we rely on and enjoy each other.
• and find meaning and purpose in their work.
Durham Academy, however, has kept its money where its mission is: excellent teachers, advisors and coaches who support the long-term development of moral, happy, productive adults. While we sometimes stumble and fall short of that ideal, our aim is steadfast, with our resources aligned to our mission.
Just as our mission compels us to aim at long-term outcomes, we recognize that the purpose of education is not merely the acquisition of facts and skills. We agree with T.H. Huxley’s idea that “The great end of life is not knowledge but action.”
• bring their healthiest and most authentic selves to school;
Former Durham Academy Head of School Don North said often to the faculty: “Schools are either getting better or getting worse. There is no standing still.” Amidst the swirling waters of 2021–2022, our school moved forward with vigor and purpose. We tested our endurance and built a more durable school community. We moved through an emergency and emerged more focused and more purposeful than ever.
Your support continues to lift our spirits, sharpen our focus and fuel our work. We are grateful.
Especially when students are practicing teamwork, citizenship and leadership, they are developing their best selves to make the world a better place.

Members of the Durham Academy Board of Trustees serve as stewards of the school who hold in trust its mission and reputation. As such, trustees accept the obligation to preserve and advance the institution. Their work begins with the fiduciary expectations of duty (due diligence on financials), care (executing decisions by prudent standards) and obedience (to laws and bylaws). Beyond these duties, trustees focus on policies and strategies that are future-focused, working in partnership with the head of school, who oversees daily operations. The board utilizes its committees to study and assess the needs, activities

13 Re-engage the Durham Academy community: The introduction of Dine With DA and CavConnect, along with the return of beloved in-person events — including the Turkey Trot, Used Book & Bake Sale, All-School Picnic and DA Nights at the Durham Bulls and Carolina Hurricanes — provided environments where old friendships were rekindled and new friendships were made.
Leora Fields, President Rasna Prakash, President-Elect
Build a volunteer roster that better reflects our families: Especially during a time when all Parents Association programs needed to be reimagined, volunteer interest was prioritized over experience, and every person who wanted to be involved was given the opportunity. The nominations process for leadership positions was reevaluated, and broader volunteer engagement and effort were prioritized over fundraising.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION
Create meaningful opportunities to connect: Whether through the introduction of Parent Affinity Groups, COVID-19 vaccine clinics, monthly Parents Association meetings or a commitment to hosting sustainable events, Parents Association focused on creating opportunities to spend time with the people and initiatives that matter most to the DA community.
Evolve Parents Association and position it for the future: Together with DA’s Administrative Team, Parents Association evaluated the structure and value of existing committees and leadership roles in order to build a more impactful, welcoming, inclusive and intentional organization. The introduction and evolution of roles and programs, increased focus on consistency while honoring individuality, and the creation of online templates and systems, better aligns Parents Association with the strategic goals of Durham Academy and defines a clear path for supporting the school community for years to come.
Delores Moore, Treasurer Asha Patel, Secretary
As students returned to campus full-time this year, our families were hungry for ways to connect. Parents Association created new initiatives and breathed life into old programs centered around fostering community and connections for our families. The 2021–2022 year was dedicated to four goals:

a key part of my life from the beginning. My family and I continue to support Durham Academy because we deeply believe in its core mission: to prepare students to live moral, happy and productive lives. But more importantly, we support DA because the mission is more than words that are tossed around. Our experience is that faculty and staff make a conscious, intentional effort to live by DA’s mission every day, resulting in students with strong character, confidence and sense of community.”

LIFETIMEHILL-KENANGIVING SOCIETY
Honoring the leadership of Bess Pickard Boone — who served as headmistress of Durham Academy’s predecessor, Calvert Method School, from 1938 to 1957 — the Bess Pickard Boone Society honors donors with cumulative giving of $250,000 or more.
BESS PICKARD BOONE LIFETIME GIVING SOCIETY
Commemorating the influence and vision of lifetime trustees George Watts Hill and Frank Hawkins Kenan, the Hill-Kenan Society honors donors with cumulative giving of $1,000,000 or more.
Durham Academy traces its beginnings to 1933, when seven students and one teacher met in the Forest Hills Clubhouse, which still stands at Forest Hills Park. The school was established by George Watts Hill and his wife, Ann McCulloch Hill, and named Calvert Method School to honor her childhood education at Baltimore’s Calvert School. The 1933 Legacy Society honors donors who have made a gift to Durham Academy through philanthropic planning. Membership is extended to all who made a provision in their estate plan to benefit the school.

“I recently decided to designate 50 percent of my Individual Retirement Account to Durham Academy. There were so many reasons for this decision. First and least important to me: taxes. Under current tax law, there may be multiple tax implications if I leave these assets to my children. But there are no taxes if I designate them to charity. An IRA designation also made it possible for me to make a larger contribution to DA than I thought possible. And why Durham Academy? I have received so many lifelong benefits from my DA education and my connection to the community. I was incredibly fortunate that my children were also able to attend the school. Beyond that, a consulting career that exposed me to schools across the country made me realize that Durham Academy is not just a good school — it’s an extraordinary school on a national level. My IRA designation to DA is one of the best investments I could make!”

FOUNDATION SUPPORT “I give to Durham Academy because I am very grateful not just for the education I received, but for the community. The teachers really care about their students and want to help them learn and grow both academically and personally. They were always there for me, whether it was a math question, advice about summer plans or just joking around after class.”

While Durham Academy relies on the flexible support provided by the Durham Academy Fund, gifts that grow our endowment and strengthen curricular and extracurricular programs are investments in the school’s future — supporting the innovation and ambition that have earned the school national recognition and increasing the value of a DA diploma.
