and Katie Garr, students in Daniela Harrell’s fifth-grade advisory, sold lemonade at the Upper School during the Middle School’s spring community service day. The fundraiser was in support of Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a nonprofit dedicated to raising funds for pediatric cancer research. In addition to selling cups of the lemony sweet drink on campus, fifth-graders fanned out around Durham, offering refreshment and an opportunity to make a difference to hundreds of people in our community. In all, the fifth-graders raised $959.50 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. Photo by Melody Guyton Butts

Letter from the Head of School
What a terrific year for our school! This Annual Report serves as a testament to Durham Academy’s culture of philanthropy. Our community has a shared expectation that we all will support our school. Doing so is critical to the pursuit of our mission: to provide each student an education that will enable him or her to live a moral, happy and productive life. We successfully fulfill this mission thanks to our outstanding and dedicated faculty, our bright and receptive students and our loyal and generous donors.
Through the philanthropic support of parents, alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni, faculty and staff, Durham Academy raised more than $2 million last year. This generosity allows for the continued excellence that is the hallmark of a Durham Academy education. I thank everyone who contributed to this remarkable success.
We hit a historic milestone this year, raising over $1 million for the Durham Academy Fund. These dollars made an immediate impact on operations, helping to fund an excellent salary and benefit package and supplementing the various academic and extracurricular programs that distinguish the DA experience.
We are now entering the second year of our strategic plan. Year one was a very busy one, a good reminder that this is a community that isn’t afraid to dream big. Our objectives are transforming, one by one, from aspirations into real work. The plan compels us to enhance our culture of philanthropy. Doing so is critical to DA’s intention to be the best independent school in the region.
On behalf of our faculty, staff and students, I thank each of you listed in this report for your generosity towards Durham Academy. Through your support of the Durham Academy Fund, your commitments to our capital initiatives and your gifts to the endowment, you have demonstrated that you believe in the future of our school. Your generosity will continue to inspire us to do our very best work with the children you have entrusted to us. Thank you!

Notable: Kari Newman
President Barack Obama honored Durham Academy chemistry teacher Kari Newman with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching – the highest commendation bestowed by the United States government on K-12 science teachers. Newman was recognized in a Washington, D.C., award ceremony on Sept. 8. She is among just 105 teachers of students in grades 7-12 nationwide to earn the honor and was one of only two North Carolina teachers honored in the grades 7-12 award cohort. In addition to a visit to the White House and professional development activities organized around the awards ceremony, Newman received a $10,000 award to be used at her discretion and a certificate signed by President Obama.

Hill-Kenan Society
Durham
Academy has a legacy of families who have been exceedingly generous to the school. Over the years these alumni, parents and friends have led the way as Durham Academy has added new buildings, updated facilities, grown the endowment to support faculty and financial aid and sustained a robust annual giving program.
The Hill-Kenan Society is named for the school’s only lifetime trustees, George Watts Hill and Frank Hawkins Kenan, both now deceased, whose leadership, dedication and vision ensured Durham Academy’s strong tradition of academic excellence. Their enduring commitment is an inspiration and a challenge to all who benefit from their dreams and generosity.

Notable: DistinguishedAppleSchool
In December 2015, Durham Academy once again earned Apple’s stamp of approval as an Apple Distinguished School, a designation that lasts through 2017. The honor is in recognition of DA’s 1:1 iPad and laptop programs in the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools. The Apple Distinguished School designation recognizes programs that meet criteria for innovation, leadership and educational excellence, and demonstrate a clear vision of exemplary learning environments such as the Lower School computer lab where (from left) Wyatt Jernigan, Rajan Jhaveri, Kendall Turner and Makeala Velazquez are working.

Durham Academy Endowment
ThroughoutDurham Academy’s history, alumni, parents and friends have established named endowment funds to provide lasting support for scholarships, faculty development and academics. It is the Durham Academy Board of Trustees’ policy that unrestricted, named endowment funds may be established with a gift of $25,000 or more and restricted, named endowment funds may be established with a gift of $100,000 or more.
The Durham Academy endowment portfolio is managed by Eton Advisors under the direction of the finance committee of the board of trustees. Eton also monitors the quasi-endowment portfolio managed by SunTrust Bank. Between two and four-and-one-half percent of the previous 12 quarter rolling average of the endowment fund is spent each year in support of the operating fund. The spending rate is determined by calculating the real dollar return of the portfolio less inflation.
Durham Academy’s endowment, like endowments at most independent schools, is a collection of various restricted and unrestricted endowment and scholarship funds. As an aggregate, this fund generates annual income for DA that flows into the operation of the school and primarily supports faculty development, financial aid and facility maintenance.

First-Ever Lower School Scholarship Fund
Honors
Beth Crawford
The first scholarship fund designated to benefit Lower School students was established this spring to honor longtime Lower School administrative assistant Beth Crawford. Beth passed away in February after a courageous ninemonth battle with cancer. She joined the Durham Academy community in the 1980s as a parent to Andy Crawford ’97 and Matt Crawford ’99, and then in 1996 became the Lower School’s first administrative assistant. Beth served in that role for 20 years, up until her diagnosis in
summer 2015. Beth worked tirelessly behind the scenes to provide support and organization for faculty, students and parents, and she was a beloved member of the Lower School family.
As a parent, she was a huge supporter of the school and instilled a strong sense of loyalty and community in her sons. Andy Crawford and Matt Crawford chose to create this fund in her memory to honor their mother’s commitment to the Lower School and to demonstrate how much Durham Academy meant to Beth and to them.
Sheri-lyn Carrow served as Lower School director from 1995 to 2004, and worked closely with Beth for those nine years. In reflecting on the meaning of this fund, Sheri-lyn said, “Beth’s dedication and caring approach was far-reaching, and she touched each of our lives on a personal level. Most of all, Beth loved the children in the Lower School and was a warm and welcoming presence in the daily life of our school. This fund would mean a great deal to Beth, and it honors her memory in a special and perfect way.”
The Beth Crawford Lower School Scholarship Fund is perpetual and will provide aid each year to a deserving Lower School student, beginning this fall.
“Our mother loved Durham Academy. She would be so happy and proud knowing every year an additional Lower School student requiring financial aid will now have the privilege of attending DA,” Andy and Matt said. “We’re grateful to our family and friends for supporting this worthy scholarship.”

Ways of Giving
There are a number of ways to make a gift to Durham Academy. A cash contribution may seem the easiest and is usually the first method that comes to mind, but it is not always the most advantageous method. Other planned giving alternatives may provide increased tax benefits.
Appreciated Securities
When making a gift of appreciated securities, the donor gets a charitable deduction for the market value of the gift and saves the capital gains tax which would otherwise be payable upon the sale of the assets. To receive these benefits, securities must be transferred to Durham Academy prior to sale. Please call the Development Office for transmittal instructions.
Charitable Remainder Trusts
Assets are placed in trust for Durham Academy and generate annual income for the donor or a family member for a fixed term or for life. The donor receives a current income tax deduction equal to a portion of the value of assets transferred to the trust.
Charitable Lead Trusts
The reverse of the remainder trust; the income generated from assets placed in trust is gifted to Durham Academy for a period of years. The trust assets are preserved for the donor’s family.
Bequests
Provisions for charitable gifts may also be made under the terms of the donor’s will, leaving a lasting legacy.
Insurance Policies
There are many ways in which life insurance policies no longer needed for family protection may be used to make a contribution, all of which provide tax benefits.

Rain
showers didn’t deter 62 players from turning out in high spirits to show their support for DA’s 16th Annual Golf Tournament. Thanks to the generosity of our players and sponsors, this year’s event raised a record $26,303. Proceeds from the tournament support the Durham Academy Fund.

2016-2017 Board of Trustees
Durham
Academy’s Board of Trustees serve as stewards of the school who hold in trust its mission and reputation. As such, trustees accept the obligation to not only preserve but also to advance the institution. Their work begins with the fiduciary expectations of duty (due diligence on financials), care (executing decisions by prudent standards) and obedience (to laws and bylaws). Beyond these duties, trustees focus on policies and strategies that are future-focused, working in partnership with the head of school who oversees daily operations. The board utilizes its committees to study and assess the needs, activities and performance of the school and to make recommendations when planning, developing and establishing policy.
