Viewed through one lens, this philanthropic Impact Report is a scorecard. Its charts and lists provide an annual and essential record of our fundraising, a revealing proof point of how much our mission matters, a grateful recognition of the 1,436 donors who chose last year to invest in our students, teachers, campus and future.

Viewed through another lens, the Impact Report is a love letter — one attempt to describe the dedication and faith of our supporters, one measure of the love they feel for our school and community, one artifact of gratitude from all of us who teach, learn, work, lead and serve here.

Love may seem a strange topic for an annual report, but it is the animating force of Durham Academy. Our alumni love their alma mater. Our families love the opportunities we create for their children. Our teachers love their subjects, their students and their work. A central part of that work is convincing young people to fall in love with their future selves — to recognize their own potential, to find things they love to learn and do, and to chase those things with vigor.

2024–2025 was full of work, love and impact. Among the highlights: •

A record Giving Day, with 1,095 donors investing $474,446 in the Durham Academy Fund, which — because it goes straight to our operating budget — benefits every DA student and teacher.

Festive and reconnective alumni gatherings in Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, New York City, Oakland, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.

•

Record turnout of DA grads for our fall Homecoming celebration on campus.

•

A lovely luncheon celebrating the 30th year of the Brenda B. Brodie Faculty Sabbatical program, including nearly all the recipients who have benefited since 1995 from the Brodie family’s visionary generosity and commitment to faculty professional growth.

An ambitious rebranding effort, intended to close the gap between the outside (and out-of-date) perceptions of our school and the current lived experience at DA: a community that is welcoming and diverse, innovative and rich in tradition, caring and courageous, challenging and supportive. Lower School, Middle School and Upper School Parents We’ve been part of the Durham Academy community for the past four years, with children who have spanned three of the school’s divisions. They have already grown in so many ways during their time at DA. We can already see that DA has equipped Ananya, our 12th grader, with the skills to succeed in college and life, no matter where she goes or what she does. Jayanth, a ninth grader, has learned time management, organization and efficiency in Middle School as he balances the demands of high-level academics with the demands of a tri-sport athlete. Kalyani, a seventh grader, has thrived in being able to explore all her interests and passions, from academic to artistic to — as of this year — athletic. Daivyan, now in fourth grade, has benefited from immersing himself in his friend group and seamlessly being welcomed by his peers. He has and will continue to grow in his writing skills, and his teachers have played helpful roles in this.

The third grade state project with Daivyan gave us cherished memories of spending time working together on his research, display board and presentation. Kalyani has thrived under the guidance of wonderful Middle School advisors, English teachers Ms. Boehm and Ms. Williams, whose supportive and nurturing advisories made a lasting impact. Jayanth feels the same way about Mr. Schollmeyer, whose unwavering belief in Jayanth’s development as a student-athlete — and his sincere joy in watching him succeed — will forever stay with us. Ananya’s experience with her Upper School teachers has been defined by excellence, passion and inspiration. Her teachers have pushed her to grow in every way, think critically, refine her writing and apply her learning to the real world.

We choose to give back to DA to support the teachers and the school in its mission, so our children and future generations of children can continue to thrive in this nurturing environment.

One of the most formative lessons I took from Durham Academy was how to approach problems thoughtfully: how to ask good questions, frame challenges clearly and develop creative solutions. That way of thinking helped me become an officer in the Marine Corps, and still applies daily in the business world. Whether it’s helping a team navigate a tough decision or figuring out how to make a complex system run more smoothly, the ability to detach and approach challenges with clarity is key. I credit DA with giving me the foundation to do that with confidence.

My favorite memories are moments when I saw hard work pay off. From getting the notorious extra credit problem correct on Dr. Herb Lamb’s Billy Wellman Class of 2005 AP Physics exam to building a working product from scratch in Julian Cochran’s computer lab, the wins that I earned stuck with me because of the effort it took to get there. Sports were also a huge part of my experience at DA. Even though we are a small school, our athletic programs are consistently competitive and often exceptional. I learned early on that quality beats quantity — that a tight-knit, focused and committed team can accomplish great things. Joe Seivold, the varsity boys soccer coach from 1991–1999, embodied that ideal.

His leadership was hard but fair, the kind that earned respect, not just compliance — and it showed, both in the trophies on the shelf and in the kind of people his teams produced.

I was lucky to learn from a number of people who had passion and perspective, both in and out of the classroom.

Two who stand out are former Middle School history teacher and Middle School director Tim Dahlgren, who held me to a higher standard at a moment when I needed it — and former Upper School math teacher Dennis Cullen, my homeroom advisor who never shied away from the challenge of keeping a headstrong teenage boy pointed in the right direction. I also learned a great deal from weight room supervisor Mike Upchurch, who cared deeply about preparing us for success and instilled in me a strong sense of discipline and hard work.

To me, DA has always been about community. The school’s size creates an environment where it is possible to build real, lasting relationships. Many classmates also had older and younger siblings, which helped knit the school together as a whole. Some of those school friendships have lasted well into adulthood, and I’m grateful to DA for fostering an environment where everyone’s individuality was valued — where the things that made people unique and quirky, myself included, were recognized as essential to the fabric of the school.

I give back to Durham Academy because I want to help ensure future generations of curious kids can benefit from the same kind of environment I did. Schools like DA don’t just run on good intentions: They require investment, belief and a community that’s willing to show up. I’m proud to be part of that.

Anna and Bob Walker Lower School parents

When it was time for Anna and Bob Walker to enroll their children in pre-kindergarten, they chose Durham Academy for its Moral, Happy, Productive philosophy. They chose DA for its academic rigor. And they chose DA for its enduring commitment to nurturing thoughtful, motivated and prepared-for-life citizens of an interconnected world. Six years later, they remain as happy as ever with their choice. independent, relying less on support from his big sister at school and making friends of his own. Once shy in front of crowds, Jack has performed happily and confidently in class plays. He has become comfortable sharing in class and articulating his ideas in a deliberate, organized fashion.

Anna and Bob say “we feel our children are known and loved at DA.” That knowing and loving is evident from the moment their kids clamber out of their car at dropoff each morning, as Head of School Michael Ulku-Steiner greets Caroline, now in fourth grade, and Jack, now in first grade, with his much-anticipated “joke of the day.” The Walker family cites an abundance of other examples of how their children are truly known and loved: the sharing that happens at morning meetings, the emphasis on community-building at weekly assemblies, and the tailoring of carefully crafted lessons to meet their children’s individual learning styles.

That growth springs directly from Caroline and Jack’s teachers at DA, who have imparted lessons that have stayed with the entire Walker family: doing your very best from former pre-kindergarten teacher Sheri-lyn Carrow, making good choices and practicing self-control from kindergarten teachers Sloan Nuernberger and Lori Hanks, helping others from Mrs. Suggs.

Caroline and Jack are eager to go to school every day. Jack still loves to joke with his pre-kindergarten teacher, Nikki Graves. “She makes school fun,” he says. Caroline praises the fun and energy that first grade teacher Debbie Suggs and third grade teacher Beth Throop ’06 bring to their classrooms. Last year, Ms. Throop helped transform math from one of Caroline’s more challenging subjects into one of her favorites — she relishes the practical applications of math when she cooks and bakes at home.

Anna and Bob give to DA out of appreciation for these life-changing teachers, and because they want to support the school in attracting and retaining such outstanding educators. Also important is ensuring that teachers and students enjoy uninterrupted access to cutting-edge resources and are able to sample a wide variety of subjects and activities. In supporting the school philanthropically, the Walkers are doing their part to help students find their passions and do good in the world — affirming that singular decision they made six years ago when they became Cavaliers. “We couldn’t be happier with our choice,” Anna and Bob say.

The Walker children have grown, too, in ways moral and happy. Anna and Bob say Caroline has become more aware of those around her, and more confident in speaking her mind. Jack has become more 21

Celebrating the Lasting Impact of Endowment Giving on Faculty Sabbaticals In December 1986, Brenda and Keith Brodie made a visionary investment in Durham Academy’s future. With a deep love for the school, they anonymously established an endowed fund to support faculty sabbaticals — an opportunity rarely found in independent schools, then or now. As former members of Durham Academy’s Board of Trustees, and with Keith serving as president of Duke University at the time, the Brodies understood the transformative power of sabbaticals to inspire and sustain excellence in teaching.

The initial gift, as well as its impact, has only grown with time. In 1995, the fund was officially named the Brenda B. Brodie Faculty Sabbatical Endowment Fund, and today, the income it generates continues to fund extraordinary opportunities for faculty each year. Since its creation, 44 Durham Academy teachers have benefited from the Brodies’ vision — pursuing advanced degrees, engaging in immersive professional development, and exploring new experiences that enrich both their personal and professional lives.

Sabbatical recipients gathered this spring for a special luncheon honoring the Brodie family: Keith, who passed away in 2016; Brenda; and their children Melissa Brodie Hanenberger ’88, Cameron Brodie ’90, Tyler Brodie ’92 and Bryson Brodie ’96. Brenda, Melissa, Tyler and Bryson attended the event, which was a moving celebration of legacy and gratitude. Teachers shared stories of growth, inspiration and the long-lasting effects their sabbaticals have had in their classrooms and beyond.

The Brenda B. Brodie Faculty Sabbatical Endowment Fund exemplifies the enduring strength of endowment giving and the sustaining impact it can have on future generations. We remain profoundly grateful for their living legacy that will continue to elevate teachers, energize students and shape the future of Durham Academy.

1933 Legacy Society Durham Academy traces its beginnings to 1933, when the school was established originally as the Calvert Method School. The 1933 Legacy Society honors donors who have made a provision in their estate plan to benefit the school.
